This show touched upon some pretty.... well... tough topics, albeit in a rather cynical way. Among these were: -Many adults can't help you with bullying or stop them. -Rich and famous people can get away with a lot of shit because they're rich and famous. -Sometimes, your parents who may have been cruel to do love you in the end. (God, The Devil, and Bob really does this one pretty well, I feel this was kind of diluted here) -Even people in classical "woobie" positions (such as in a wheelchair) can be assholes, too. -Sometimes you're only friends with someone because of inertia or proximity -Talent alone doesn't carry entertainment such as music - you gotta be "pretty" and "presentable". -Crash course diets will wear off pretty quickly (lol) -When people who wrong you receive no consequences for their behaviour... resentment builds. HARSH. -Islamophobia that is still present today but it was SUPER common in the 2000s. -Bad people get away with stuff all the time. -People with low senses of self-worth can be easily led astray. -Even scam artists can be right sometimes. (Spice actually telling people things like "Remove 'can't' from your inventory" and helping Zoey with her issues) -Sometimes people will act up just to have some control over their lives. -Everyone has jerkass tendencies every now and then. -Your parents mean well. I really related to Penny, Oscar, and Zoey. That feeling of life just... constantly knocking you down. And whenever you point out how you're getting a raw deal or even try to call people out for it, you get told that you're "overreacting". That was me. On some occasions the show was making the characters sympathetic when they were trying not to be. Ie, Oscar yelling at Suga Momma. Given how Suga Momma treats him... Is it any WONDER he finally snapped? I get it, sometimes he "Deserves" it, but Suga Momma will just overreact or worse of all tease or beat him unprovoked. Penny is supposed to be seen as 'bratty' in one episode but the Gross Sisters go to her party. Uh... really? The Gross Sisters are BULLIES? They routinely STEAL her money? They get away with it? I think she has every reason to not want them there even IF they end up being nice that one episode (in some ways they're nicer to her than Dijonay and LaCienaga.) Penny, honestly, you, Zoey, and Sticky should just leave Lacienaga and Dijonay to themselves because you deserve BETTER. Zoey was that person with conventionally "unattractive" traits (glasses, red hair, braces, clothes that're out of fashion, tall, lanky build) with a low sense of self-worth. She just wants to belong. She follows because if she doesn't she'll be left alone and with nobody else. She needs people to show her (not just tell her. Show.) that she is worth more. She needs people who will listen and take her own thoughts, needs, desires, opinions, and talents into account. That's a lot of people out there. Her actress does such a great job of getting this down. I also forget which episode it was, but I think one of the best episodes was the episode with Suga Mama's evil sister. Several reasons: -Zoey is actually given something confidence boosting that she needs. It shows her own flaws, how they can be used against her, but also how there was something to improve with it. -Suga Mama comes to Oscar's rescue in the end because, yeah, Spice is evil. Coming from her this is amazing. -Oscar calls out Suga Mama for her behaviour. (...Which I know is odd, but nobody bats an eyelash at how Suga Mama treats Oscar. Trudy doesn't even bat an eyelash for how Suga Mama intrudes upon his life until it starts affecting HER.)
You have a point about Trudy. This is shown in the episode when Penny broke her leg and Trudy got stressed from caring for her AND driving Suga Mama around. She was all, "YOU'RE MAMA AND YOU'RE DAUGHTER ARE DRIVING ME CRAZY! I CAN HANDLE YOUR DAUGHTER, BUT NOT YOUR MAMA TOO!"
I recently rewatched the show and I've noticed a lot of episode endings are rather frustrating when you realise how they wasted their storyline. Like when Oscar kissed up to his daughter so that he can relieve his basketball shot, he never took steps to get help. Or when Penny became a successful popstar and she ended up running back to the people who emotionally abused her ever chance they got. This is just two of them out of the bunch of awful endings. This show has great life lessons to tell but a sensable adult really needs to be in the room when their child watches this show.
The best episode is the one when they are a music group. But the memory that will always be burned in my mind is when Shuga Momma puts her foot in it. Classic.
You know how you can tell how good your show is? When you incorporate aspects of the early 2000s in almost every scene, and still not have it be distracting. Dated, but not distracting. Exact opposite of Quack Pack unfortunately.
The babies were named after BeBe and CeCe Winans. Someone in that writing room, or maybe even Bruce W. Smith himself was a big fan of the Winans' gospel music.
Not really, but I believe it was meant to be a reference to Kyla Pratt (voice of Penny)'s previous acting role, which was Dr. Dolittle. The show tends to make subtle references to the actors previous roles. They did it with Alisa Reyes(LaCienaga, episode, the Party) and Jo Marie Payton (Suga Mama, episode, Legend of Johnny Lovely) albeit the Suga Mama one is pretty meta.
17:54. Judge Frollo from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame could actually work as a crossover villain. He could have a crush Penny or LaCienega like he did with Esmeralda. Or is that too dark lol?
I like the proud family I used to watch it a lot when it came out and i always liked how they dealt with sensitive topics without being preachy about it and the show had lots of reruns on tv so I seen the show a few times and I wanna watch it because I hadn’t seen the show in a while and i wanna watch it again before the reboot comes out and I don’t know if the reboot will be good or not so far it doesn’t sound good
Honestly I couldn’t have imagined this airing on Nickelodeon given that Bruce smith was a Disney animator at the time and I can still see the influence of the show today given Dr facillar from the princess and the frog looks like an evil version of Oscar proud make of that what you will also the show premiered 4 days after 9/11 go figure
The Proud Family reboot feels lazy and redone they should just reboot it with fresh looks and make the characters a lot older in that it just feels lazy and a a cash grab from a dollar bin
This entire show is like a time capsule of what the early 2000s was like, and you know what, that’s ok
The Proud family, Kim Possible, Code Named Kids Next Door and Foster's home for imaginary friends are the shows I remember the most from childhood.
2000s definitely had an identity, I feel like from 2013 to 2020 the identity has been lost

9:40 I do. Wym? Alicia Keys music fire old and new 🔥🔥
From what I’ve heard, Nick was actually on board, but asked for just a few changes before they’d go with it. Paraphrasing but still

whats the background music
Is that Looney Tunes Show music in the background??
I gotta say , the episode where penny becomes a gross sister is my least favorite episode. For obvious reasons.
Aww dude , monkey business is one of my favorite episodes , it gave me ( in my opinion ) the hottest version of Mariah Carey.
That is a good episode.
