As an diamond grader for GIA easiest way is to apply to become a diamond grader if they are hiring. Why? You get hands on direct education, get to pad your resume, and all the courses are free for employees. You have a job making money and don’t pay for the education. Take every course possible with a padded resume and then dip out…
@@Champagne.I any position that is a direct hire to GIA gets full education benefits to all courses. Though some you have to consider time off. Graders are afforded more paid time off to help obtain their GG and the diamond lab class is waived because duh you are a diamond grader. Any position is fine it’s just far easier to do it as a grader as they not only encourage you to get a GG but it is also required for certain positions to move up into.

I would love to work as a curator at a museum or being the one who acquires new specimens or being like you, a host on TH-cam or other media enlightening people about geology and gems. I'm a geologist atm and have a big fascination with gems and their formation. A product made by Earth solely for us humans to marvel at!

i cant say id love to be a gemologist. theres too many to remember but id rather be there doing the hard stuff finding the gems. id enjoy the clean up and making them look nice and the placing them with their family that is looking for a new gem. i dont care about the money its lucrative. in any aspect. but giving people what they really want and giving a good home to something that deserves it is really what im trying to do. but i cant do it alone and that sucks.

I used to love rock hounding but I sorta stopped because it was a heavy hobby lol. But gems of all kinds still bring love to my heart. Finding them is the mystery and the love whether I get one or not the experience is priceless. Cutting and grading is something I love but it's so time-consuming. I love the idea of transporting gems also which I know is a thing and only a handful of people do it.

I recently got certified in both diamonds and colored gemstones by taking courses from IGS. I wanted to see if gemology was for me since their course are affordable before I took the full plunge at the GIA. I also have a bachelor's degree in geology. Do you think this certification along with my degree would allow me to work in certain places or if a GIA diploma is required? Please make part 2.
Firstly, congratulations on achieving the Diamonds and colored gemstone certification with IGS. In answer to your question, it would very much depend on where 'those certain places' are. So, for example if you are looking to enter the retail jewelry industry then those qualifications would be beneficial, but GIA would possibly give you an edge, particularly if you are looking at a higher-level position. If you were looking to go into jewelry appraisal, then yes your current qualifications would be beneficial and GIA would be essential.
I have been collecting gemstones since I was 5, but I have also wanted to join the Army before that and I have been shooting and fighting in multiple periods of my life since I was 5 also. I choose 75th Ranger Regiment, after that it's either Army S.F. (Green Berets) or Gemologist
Great video, just to clarify - Gem-A has 60--70% pass rate, some GEm-A ATC's (training centres) may be less or indeed more, but thats the average. There are many potential careers in Gemmology - go armed with what you want to do and then shape your training and of course don't be afraid of reaching out to people - its an industry that really wants to help. good luck. I love the gemstones and rocks but my color vision put a stop to going any further into the hobbyists. I'm a cheap date because I can't tell the difference between amethyst and sapphire when cut/set
I just thought about it REALLY HARD. And now I know rocks. I know- that just sounds like Saitama explaining how he became powerful enough to defeat anyone with one punch. That’s actually probably NOT how that happened, (I probably absorbed small amounts of that knowledge under the duration of several years), but it’s what I go with for multiple reasons- mainly to save time. (But I learned most of it through basic knowledge and basic understanding of rocks, and then stretched my brain muscles to learn more). If you don’t believe that though, ask me anything on rocks.

What is your opinion on The Montreal School of Gemmology (aka Ecole de Gemmologie de Montreal)? It's a private institute associated with the World Gem Foundation, the Canadian Jewellers Association, and Gemworld. It may be interesting to have a video explaining what makes the difference when looking at different education options, as not everyone is able to move across the country or study abroad (even if online courses are available, there are lab classes and not everyone will be able to get to an associated lab!). Are GIA and Gem-A the only options? What are other comparable degrees/diplomas? Why does Canada want to bankrupt me for this course? (okay, maybe I've been spoilt by Quebec's low tuition costs lol) I'd really appreciate some insight before I apply for any specific educational path.

Firstly what do you want from your gemmology qualification? If you are seeking to enter the trade, then it needs to be recognized by the places where you would like to work. Next, ask if it has been subject to the scrutiny of a national education board of standards? What level or equivalency does it have? Does this matter to you? Finally, and perhaps most importantly, do professional bodies in the trade where you live recognize it? Your local retailer may be happy enough to give you a job, but for a career in gemmology, that is just your first step into an amazing world of opportunities, so how would you like to specialize? Become an appraiser, perhaps? Will your national appraisal organizations recognize your qualification? Gem-A’s and GIA’s are recognized by the Canadian and the US appraisal organizations and those in many other countries, for example, so to become an appraiser, you will have already completed the biggest hurdle.

The danger would be leaving yourself susceptible to misleading claims. For instance, you may be supplied with a sapphire but is it mined? lab grown? has it been treated? We love all kinds of gemstones, but these factors can make a big difference in market value and pricing.
