BEST ETHICAL ELEPHANT SANCTUARY ! THAILAND Vlog #2

  • BEST DAY EVER! A day in the life of an elephant trainer, spent in a Karen tribe village near Chiang Mai (Thailand) with super HEALTHY and HAPPY elephants! 🐘 I did my research and most definetly would not had wanted to participate to any sort of animal cruelty. In fact today was just the opposite and if you ever want to spend some time with elephants in Thailand, I super highly recommend Karen Tribe's Native Elephants! We each had "our own" elephant, which we had to take care of. We learned the morning routine to check that they are healthy, got to feed them (a lot), bathe them, walk them, and even made plant based medicine to keep them strong and healthy.

I visited an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai a few months ago and the elephants were free to come and go as they pleased. Our guide told us at first that we might only have 2-3 elephants that day, but several more came into the village as the morning progressed and we had 10-11 at the peak, but then some walked off after getting the food and we had 6 for the mud bath and the washing in the river. It's hard to speak for an elephant, but they seemed to be having a great time and were quite playful. These are clearly very intelligent animals.

You have to look back in the past. How many years people have been riding elephant? We Karen tribe native elephant have been taking care of elephant before tourism. The trip here it is not about ride or not ride. The whole idea is to keep them healthy and happy. From the beginning until now none of they go to hospital.
There are some elephant sanctuary that runs by foreigners who married Thai lady and man. They saud they rescuse elephant but the truth is they buy elephant from people. They said no riding because without riding they can take many tourist everyday. The can make more money. They said people train elephant very bad in order to ride. Basically, they buy the elephant that people had trained so that elephant can be with people. It is all about business.

Okay, I am having mixed feelings.
You can tell the elephants are happy and healthy...agreed?
But this isn’t a completely “Ethical” sanctuary at all.
Allowing elephants to be themselves in their environment is ethical.
Nothing about riding elephants is ethical.
I do see that they truly care for the elephants. With that I’m a little pleased. Not much but please change the title to not say best ethical sanctuary because it is not.

@@อาทิตย์อาทิตย์-พ6ฦ This lady you’re talking about is Lek Charleit! She is Awesomely Good Hearted woman and her husband is a good man! Yes, if the only way to save Elephants from a life of slavery is to buy them! Why not ! They must do it!
On top of that Lek talk in a good way about Karen Village, there’s even some videos that that shoot there! And in those recent videos the people at Karen Village never ride on the back of the elephants! Maybe in this video it happened accidentally with that tourist!
And I will add that Elephants Nature Park is a Reputable Sanctuary where they offer a decent and happy life to those rescued elephants because it’s impossible for them to go back in the wild! After all those years of mistreatment and misery on the hands of people!

    The
elephants in this park look like they are treated quite well, for sure. No
doubt. But consider this for a moment. These elephants have been abused in the
past in many terrible ways at the hands of humans. They have physical scars as
well as emotional and psychological scars. They were all brutalized in the
process of breaking down their will to impose a tyrannical submission to the
will of humans. But what is most compelling to me is that these animals have
souls that are probably the closest to the human soul than any other species of
mammal that walks on the planet. And their memories are in some ways sharper
than human memory, and they can remember far back into the past. They laugh and
they cry and they watch over their babies like humans do. They were humiliated
in their previous slave lives by the will of humans, and when you climb up on
their backs, you are once again imposing a kind of human demand of submission.
What about their dignity? Don’t they have a right to be respected, not because
they can be ridden, but just because they are majestic creatures with a right to
walk free on the planet like any other being? How do we know, if when a person
climbs up on their back, they aren’t reminded once again of their former
brutalized lives? Knowing this, I would be content to feed them, walk with
them, rub their backs and just admire them and not take the chance that I would
be reminding them once again of the horrors of the past. Think about it.

I'm pretty sure the most ethical elephant sanctuaries in Thailand, or anywhere else are the ones where people are not riding the animals. The Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai would be one of those. Some have tried to make the case that it's the sitting frames that create the problems for the elephants, not a human body. But these animals are highly intelligent and have phenomenal memories, like humans. How would you like to have to confront the memory of some past trauma every day like having to see the person who attacked you over and over again, every day? Think about it. I think these animals can be enjoyed and appreciated without having to get up on their backs and ride them around.

We spent a day there a few weeks ago. These elephants roam on the Karen Tribe land. They come and go as they please. It seems there are many elephant experts, but just spend a day with the people who have for generations lived with these elephants and learn about these amazing animals from the people who know them. Their elephants are healthy, happy and naturally breeding, which is a sign of health and contentment.

When looking for a good sanctuary make sure it doesn't have so much interaction with the animals such as bathing and riding. The elephants don't like it and they need to be broken in to do so.
