The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms Colorized Showcase

- I used an Ai Program called Deoldify to help make this video. All in all, most of the colorization looks pretty good in my opinion, aside from a few hiccups here or there. I was planning on doing Half Human (1955) before making this video, but I have not been able to find a good copy of the film (and I do not wish to have a repeat of my Varan video), so to the user who requested Half Human, I do apologize, I will try to get to Half Human whenever I can find a good copy of the film.
I must say, Beast From 20,000 Fathoms is truly breathtaking sometimes with the stop motion effects... even in today's age of films with all the CGI and suitmation, this film still wowed me at several points. To think this came out a year before Godzilla.
I plan on doing another classic film next, one of the big rivals to Godzilla in the 60's and 70's (hint, hint). - บันเทิง
Ray Harryhausen was a true artist. With just stop motion and a tiny budget, he made scenes that looked like a giant epic Hollywood blockbuster. I'll bet Warner Brothers would have given him a bigger budget if they had known that "The Beast" would be a huge hit.
this film was not a hit, but it was the inspiration for the hit.
@@simbiotesnus1013 In its first run in theaters, "Beast" grossed about 7 times its original cost. That constitutes a hit.
@@stevenlitvintchouk3131 yes, it paid off at the box office, but it didn't become a cult hit.
@@simbiotesnus1013 a 7 times gross and providing the green light for two other big Warner monster films isn't just paying off at the box office. Godzilla [the other film you're talking about] didn't become a hit in the US market until way after its initial release. It also had the benefit of decades of sequels the majority of which didn't even get US releases. Of course Gojira was a hit in Japan...but so was this film.
@@simbiotesnus1013it very much is a cult hit
One of Godzilla’s inspirations. 🦖
More like Godzilla is a copycat
@@blinkbernardino3135 Nah not really. Godzilla was inspired but not ripped off :)
For me the Emmerich movie is a remake of this movie and not of Godzilla.
@@Grandmaster_Dragonborn Izaki is right, it's a copycat. Only a Godzilla fanboy would think otherwise.
@@morgothfromangband6082 nahhh Godzilla 1998 is a movie with parts of different Godzilla movies put together
I can't even FATHOM how good this looks.
I don’t know if it’s funny or not funny
Nice Pun , maybe you should save it for Raquel Welch .
I love the colorized version of these old b&w movies
I’m curious of what the colorized would look like on other 50’s monster movies like: The Black Scorpion, The Giant Claw, Tarantula, THEM, The Deadly Mantis, or The Creature from the Black Lagoon
Agreed! They look great. I don't know why some are so put off.
I also like the versions which smooth out the strobing of motions and add motion blur.
To me, it doesn't detract, because it's barely noticeable, it enhances what the artist did without replacing it.
I dunno. There's an intensity to black-and-white that I think works well for these creature features.
@@danieldickson8591 like Godzilla 1954 or the black scorpion?
@@markbest5127 people are usually put off after watching old colourization processes from the 1980s that did look horrendous and getting a bad taste in their mouths.
Don't know why, some people are labeling this, AI. AI isn't colorization, but computer's thinking/deciding on their own!! Doesn't anyone watch, science fiction movies, depicting that??
This is one of the best, sci-fi/horror films, EVER!!!!
I knew Ray Harryhausen very well in the last 15 years of his life. Take it from me: he would have loved this! Well done!
4:30 For anyone dismayed at the apparent death of this brave police officer, fear not,
he miraculously returns to life to join his fellow cops in their fight against the beast a little while later. NY's finest.
So I'm not the only one who noticed that !
Outstanding movie ! You're welcome Godzilla.
Twin brother, perhaps. 😉

One of my favorite stories from the production of the film is one Ray Bradbury told. (Anyone else think fate has a funny sense of humor that the two best friends would have the same first name)
Since Harryhausen, a good friend, was working on the film, he told Bradbury that the producer needed help rewriting the script. Well incidentally, the producers had taken Bradbury‘s work from the Saturday evening post, never asked the author for permission to make it into a movie, and then had brought him in to rewrite the plagiarized script.
Being the gentleman that he was, Bradbury didn’t need to say anything, only that the story sounded a lot like one he had written. And then the next day, there was a telegram asking for permission to buy the rights.
(so don’t tell me when an unknown author claims that a big studio has stolen their work, that is just coincidence or that they are lying)
I read "The Foghorn" when I was 13. Then I was hooked on Bradbury
And to be clear, while they definitely stole it from Ray B, The Foghorn only dealt with the lighthouse scene.
Dude this is nuts. I do notice the hiccups you're prolly talking about when it gets a brownish hue for a few frames. But damn its insane what AI and some technical know how can do. I'd honestly watch the whole film like this just to experience it. Great job
Awesome man! Great work, I forgot how awesome this film is! Haven't seen it in years, Rays work never disappoints!
Thank you my friend. ❤
@@Nedziller You're welcome bro
"Ray's work never disappoints." Truer word have never been spoken. Harryhausen imbued life into his creations. Unlike the soulless works vomited up by so many fx houses these day.
@@morphobots Agreed! Oh yeah so much of the cgi gets very boring especially the low budget stuff
@@ShinGoji1987Official Even high-budget cgi can be lack-luster. Compare "Clash of the Titans" 1981 and 2010. While the animation may be smoother and the models more detailed in the 2010 film, the cgi performance falls flat in the face of the 1981 film. 😄 Hell, even the Kraken's *_tail_* had more personality as it caused the tidal wave that destroyed Argos early on in that film.
One of the best creature movies ever, thank you Mr. Ray Harryhausen!!!🙏👌👻❣️
Godzilla 1998 remake the beast from 20 000 fanthoms
Enter Rhedosaurus the amphibious T-Rex was a masterpiece from the veteran animator and special effects director Ray Harryhausen which would later inspire the creation of its Japanese counterpart Godzilla.
5:01 impressive shot
Very well done! Would LOVE to see the entire movie colorized!
Incredible. I'd love to see the entire movie colorized like this. And Ray Harryhausen was a true artist, to do so much on a tiny budget in 1953.
This has been a fave of mine for decades! I'm delighted to see this version done!
Harryhausen's use of shadows on the creature are simply amazing
One of my favorite old school monster movies, ray harryhausen was a masterpiece at making the redosaurus, without this there wouldn’t be gojira
As I mentioned in the description, to the user who requested Half Human (1955), I have been on the lookout for a quality copy of film for use in a colorized project, but have been unable to secure one.... I'm sorry to keep you waiting longer, but I wish to get the best possible result.
Anyhow, as also mentioned, there will be a special film colorized next...
Though, I may take some time, as I am busy with things in my personal life, but fret not, the next film will be worth the wait. :)
If you wish for a color scheme for The Half Human; look no further than King Kong VS Godzilla. Kong's suit was a modified version of the Half Human costume. As for his little son; reference to young Sanda a.k.a. The Brown Gargantua!
@@Phantanos Hey, that's good to know, I'll keep that in mind when I eventually get around to the Half Human video.
I LOVE ALL THESE MONSTERS MOVIES FROM THE `50s!
Without this, we could not have & see Godzilla in many years.
When his monsters show up the Havoc begins.... that's a powerful scene I remember that as a kid. Even though the movie was made years before I was born I saw it in the '60s and the terror of seeing the policeman getting eaten alive shook me up for years. Then the poor creature dies tearing down a roller coaster we all love.
This 1953 movie is often cited as the inspiration for the 1954 Godzilla that followed.
Awesome colorized version
Rhedosaurus is my favorite monster outside of any Japanese franchise. He's so cool!
I saw it in the theater in Manchester Connecticut when I was a kid . I never forgot the cop with the pistol shooting at the monster and his flailing legs whilst he was being devoured. Weird how that stuck.
This looks fantastic- especially the outdoor scenes! I can’t wait to see what you do with the 8th wonder from 33….😉
The Rhedosaurus was never in the fossil record or in any dinosaur history books in real life
Haven't seen the colorized version but this one doesn't disappoint in B&W. One of the best earlier sci-movies along with The Thing from another Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and the Forbidden Planet.
What are the great old Sci fi films?
4 of my favorite movies from the 50"
@@guileniam as far great older Sci Fi; in the silent era you had "Metropolis", and "The Lost World", and then the 30's gave us "Things to come", and "Island of lost souls". You could argue both "Frankenstein", and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", are Science Fiction.....
Another 'World'.
I remember when I watched this movie for the first time, some forty years ago. I was just a teenager and I liked it very much.
Wow, that looks great !
This mad lad. This mad man is making colour 50s films.
Love this movie alot.
One of my favorites growing up......
This is beautiful.
They also have a colorized version on DVD
I was not aware of this.... Oh well, I suppose this video maybe redundant now, but I'm okay with that.
I just came to the realization that this is closer to the 98 Godzilla than the 54
still amaze by how Harryhausen combined human and monster footage like this. Some shots are flawless.
What a great movie hands down!!!
Maaaan! that lighthouse scene! 🙌🙌
Can't wait to see whole movie . When this came out I was 5 or 6 yr's old . I had my hands in front of my face , peeking through my fingers my Mom said . I know it looked freak'n real . The color looks real good ! 😊
THAT is some startlingly good colorizing. Put Lee on! Put Lee on!
This is brilliant in colour I remember watching King Kong 1933 in colour it’s amazing
That's great! Hope to see a full movie colored like it was with King Kong 30s
ラストの遊園地の場面が観たくなる。
I've always appreciated how the light and shadow plays on the dinosaur as it goes marauding through Manhattan. One scene shows Big Rhed in front of the Flatiron Building. Twenty-three skidoo! This is my favorite dino-run-amok flick! Thanks, Warner Brothers, Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury.
23 Skiddoo?? Well, 2023😏 maybe.
@@rogerrendzak8055 I'm an "old guy." 🤣
fabulous!
I’ve seen The Beast in revival theaters over the years here in NY, and every time the cop is eaten the audience breaks out into laughter and applause. We have a funny sense of “fun”.
The Godzilla Before Godzilla
Yum Yum eat’em up!! Great stuff!
Your AI program really did Ray Harryhausen's film-and Rhedosaur- justice.I'd pay to see this on the big screen at our repertory theater.
Repertory?? You mean local??
@@rogerrendzak8055We have a repertory movie theater in Ottawa,Canada,The Towne. It's called a repertory theater, and features art house, special interest and exploitation films.
Well looks like I'll be adding this to moving collection.
Awesome! 👍
great job
this american film was my favorite monster movie i just love how the beast look like a iguana
I guess everyone in 1954 just bought blue cars - but different shades of blue.100% authentic colorization, great job!
Sorry just a limitation of the AI partner. Thank you
I actually like the colour version. We need to have this done with today's technology
Interesting - it's like those old two-strip Technicolor horror films from the 1930's like DOCTOR X and MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM (later remade with Vincent Price as HOUSE OF WAX). Also, the look of the Rhedosaurus here is green, which was actually its real design color before being captured on B&W.
The cut at around 0:51 has me fucking dying 😂
I make cuts like that on purpose throughout my Colorized series.... I think the funniest I made was in my Gamera video, were I make it look like two characters blow up...
The creature throwing up the cop and then swallowing him is one of the scariest scenes for me.
Oooh, stop motion!
I wish that there was a Colorized Version of that Movie.
Kenneth Tobey (Captain Hendry in The Thing From Another World) at .36. Looks like he's at yet another Arctic scientific base but this time with a bigger monster.
I see a colourist in the making....
日本では「原子怪獣あらわる」のタイトルでした
Which is next: The one with the mantis, or the one with the scorpion?
I'll more then likely do the Deadly Mantis first... but I'm currently working on another Japanese giant monster film first.
@@Nedziller Black Scorpion Too.
We have this movie!
I used a date a woman who said when she was a little girl she remembered when the beast destroyed Lower Manhattan.
Is there are full movie version of this? This looks great!
How did you do the colourisation? I'm just getting into it via AI colourisation, but AI has nothing compared to this. Amazing.
Love to see a modern day remake of this film.
Not me. No offense but i've had a gutsfull of cgi movies
If you think you need a remake, ,,,,,please think again.
This stuff IS QUALITY!
Besides, Hollywood is out of new ideas.
Godzilla '98 is pretty much a remake of this movie.
Rhedosaurus my beloved
hope to have this in blu ray disc also valley of gwangi... classic monsters... this where the king of the monsters was born in... 1954 Godzilla...
I loved the Rhedosaurus.
It seems Godzilla 1998 is a loose remake of this with some similarities
I like it❤
This is the Roland Emmerich monster for me, it is the beast from 20000 fathoms.
Got This in B&W DVD But i Want Colorized Version, Too.
Fun fact: this movie was made warner bros and warner bros are the distributors of current godzilla films
I wish someone wood put the full film on thanks
I love B&W movies B&W
Dang, I didn't notice it was only 5 minutes
me when i forgot my homework and its time to give it to teacher 4:35
I wonder what creature from the black lagoon would look like in color?
It was in color and 3D on TV years ago.
Please do King Kong 1933 next
Godzilla 98 was actually a terrible remake of this film lol, I loved this film as a kid and it’s a classic
4:35 Cue gremlins from the new batch laughing.....
At 4:17 there is a mother casually walking along with a small child, hmm I guess she's blind.
I think it was loosely remade into Godzilla '98 as well.
I guess United States made the first Godzilla movie in 1953. We don't call it Godzilla we call it's something else
Never mind. Thought it was the whole movie.
WTF the best from 20,000 fathoms
When is the whole colorised version due out ??
Now I want 54 Godzilla in color dammit
The rhedosaurus is a unFATHOMable monster "ba du chi"
👏👍
Remember back in the day when people would just faint at the drop of a hat? Good times...
Women don't do that any more in movies because it is too sexist.
Great movie and good to see the clips. But the colorization is distractingly uneven, especially in the Arctic scenes where the snow keeps mutating 'twixt white and (oh God NO!)...yellow.
