Theory: The reason why Bianca is emotionless (for the most part) is because since her Grandpa died, she felt incredibly sad and depressed obviously judging by her mom. She saw this as a liability and useless. So to basically to make her mother proud of her in the slightest bit, she chose to work as a nurse and ask Doctor Albright to basically be immune to emotions or anything that could make her feel.

The doctor seems to not mind other's pain but seems to care about Bianca. When we see the effects of the despair plant he warns Bianca not to touch it. He spoke with seriousness that hasn't been seen from him before. I like to think he actually values Bianca as a friend and that he only cares about someone else's pain when it's her.
Sadly, staying awake can affect memory storage, give you hallucinations, and affect handling complex tasks in our brain. So, it may be possible that you would not die, but your quality of life would deteriorate quickly.
