These APS-C Lenses Make Full Frame Nervous (Sirui Sniper Series)

  • Crop sensors are usually worse than full frame. Less image quality, a certain cheapness to the image, less Toneh. You want some background blur bokeh? This Sirui Sniper lenses are insane! 23mm, 33mm, 56mm f1.2 lenses that autofocus. They look really cool in white too. Testing them on the Nikon Z30 vs full frame lenses for Canon and Sony. Is the Sirui 23mm f1.2 as good as the vintage Voigtlander 35mm f1.2? Can the 33mm f1.2 stack up against the Zeiss 55mm f1.8? How does the 56mm f1.2 fair vs the Canon EF 85mm f1.2? Are full frame Canon R8 and Sony A7S III about to lose a battle to the lowly Nikon Z30 with budget Sirui lenses?

    APSC is more than enough. I was obsessed with blurry background until I watched the reboot of Anne of Green Gables. Anne with an E blurs the background so often, it bothered me. I wanted to see the landscape. I watched the original from the 80s and it was so nice to see the natural beauty behind the actors.

      It bears to keep in mind that the pre-digital cinema format was usually super 35, which is almost exactly the same size as an APS-C sensor. So the depth of field of an APS-C sensor is likely to remind viewers more of movies than a full-frame sensor is. But that's really based on viewer expectations, like why do people film in 24 fps? Because that's what films use, even if technically 60 fps, even 30 fps, is better.
      There's a trend in modern movies to go full frame or even larger, creating extremely shallow depth of field (Nolan did it in Oppenheimer, but with restraint for certain scenes only), but it's worth asking "just because you CAN (shoot with larger sensors than super 35) doesn't mean you SHOULD".
      So for people wanting to shoot video, APS-C is enough. If only IBIS wasn't so damn rare in APS-C bodies.

      If only their quality control was better: D600, D750, Z8, you name it. On the other hand, I can only remember Canon having hardware issues once: with their 650D that used rubber which some people were allergic too. Then again, I may be forgetting some other cases. It's just that Nikon handled a lot of those very poorly, like how they never fixed the oil stains on D600 sensors even after service repairs and just released the D610 practically spitting in the face of D600 owners. I think that's what's earned them a bad rep, not their inferior technology.

    • @yawningmarmot
      @yawningmarmot 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ftlbaby Oh, definitely. Off the top of my head I can at the very least remember Panasonic G7 having that problem. However in my personal experience of all camera makers Nikon has always had the most problems with dust on their sensors. Both my Nikon D80 and Zfc were dust magnets from day one.
      In comparison, I have never had to clean my Canon 600D/550D/EOS M and only occasionally had to clean my Panasonic cameras. Maybe it's just my luck or maybe Canon really does have their anti-dust system figured out.
      Can't speak for Sony or others as I haven't used them long enough if at all.

    • @audioupgrades
      @audioupgrades 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm not impressed with the Z30. I think CC has been seduced by the fact that the camera does a bit of crowd-pleasing processing in camera, which you should really be doing in post. Also, I was screaming in my head that the Z30 colours have a strong green tint right before CC said this: 6:14.

    • @yawningmarmot
      @yawningmarmot 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@audioupgrades I mean, Canon has always leaned into warm and red, Nikon into cool and green, and Sony into whatever the camcordery hell they're after. So at the end of the day, you just pick the color scheme you're happy with as no consumer camera is color accurate :)

    Nice one Kasey. Great review. I think the Siriu has some 3D pop. Not as much as the Voigtlander, but more than some of the other 3rd party lenses and more than most of the 1st party branded lenses. The Nikon colors are fantastic. In the last comparison with the Canon, the colours were so close it was hard to call. I like how Canon seems to desaturate faces, it means you don't look green and red, like on every other modern camera (Nikon excepted). The Siriu definitely hunted a lot, or possibly it was the slowness you discussed and so it drifted from sharp to slightly soft continuously. Would I get these lenses and the Nikon Zfc, Z30 - YES, 100%

I guess they will be "soft as baby poo" to quote Kai on the f0.95 lens, but maybe they learned some new tricks. To my eye, the Sirui lenses were great. I guess the focus hunting was due to the f1.2, because it is harder to manually focus a really fast lens, so it is probably also harder for the computer in the camera to do it.

    That Nikon 40 is amazing and I bet it isn't terribly expensive either I had an AIS 1.2 nicor and quite liked the manual solid metal aspect of it but I don't believe it was a spherical intended to have weak focus at one point too so they have improved but I could never reinvest in all new lenses to get their new mount even though I do love Nikon I think the Sahara lens are okay not bad really not bad but so much of a lens is how it feels to you and I think if they felt weird I would like them it's kind of like white people spend seven grand on a Leica it's more about the feel solidity the craftsmanship then necessarily better pictures something solid is going to work for you I also think the Sony colors are atrocious but we all know that so much so that you are correct the z30 the humbles E30 beats it overall for a basic picture as far as 3D pop goes I found the saharui not to be so bad there is some pop and this ice had the best pop not surprising for lenses which are so damn expensive and also ceas keeps their vintage design sorry that's z as a zebra eis lens

      You can buy the FTZ or FTZ II adapter and use your AIS 1.2 lens. Mirrorless makes those old lenses work so well! Easier to focus with focus peaking!

    9:05 for the autofocus thing you might wanna go into the customs settings menu and play around with the AF speed and AF tracking sensitivity settings. I'm pretty sure that's why it's not instantly following your face.

    Off topic: Can you suggest some DJI Osmo Action 4 settings I can use on the fly for when I'm out hiking? My current settings are, well, disappointing. I just want to film some memories I can share with friends and family. I don't really vlog I just capture things on the go with an attempt of a storyline. I bought the DJI Osmo Action 4 because it's small, light and durable with good specs for amateur filmmaking.

    I feel like the Nikon Z30 is always just slightly out of focus compared to all the other options. Am I missing something? The Nikon also seems a touch green and bright. The Sony + Voigtlander appeared to be the most impressive to me. But I also started to wonder if the left side of my Samsung 4K TV was just blurrier than the right side... so there's that.

    Seeing nice 3rd-party lenses like this really pisses me off towards Canon and their closed lens ecosystem re: not allowing autofocus lenses in the RF mount.
    Yes a very good comparison is full frame at F1.8 vs APS-C at F1.2.
    Since noise difference between sensors is typically 1 stop, that's taken care of. (In this case the cameras are "equalized for depth-of-field" and therefore, typically, noise). But then there is still the matter of color depth and dynamic range. Full frame wins those categories.
    Anyway as much as I love my R8 - this closed lens issue sucks. Really gives me pause.

      I don't see it as a problem. These Sirui lenses are nice, but I prefer the Nikon 40mm f2 and it's even cheaper. Canon has all the EF glass.

    The Nikon autofocus speed can be changed in the video menu. Set it to higher speed an it will be more willing to change when you go back and forth. I don't know the Z30 in this regard, but that is the normal way Nikons work.

    This felt more about the Nikon than the lenses, I feel like you really missed a point to drive home that you can get quality out of those budget lenses! (With a budget camera) compared to your most expensive set ups. But I feel like you gave all the credit to the Nikon.
