Hybrid Napier grass may be a boon for the dairy industry on account of the supply of adequate green fodder of high nutritional value with round-the-year availability and minimum expense on repeated fodder cultivation. Hybrid Napier is a perennial grass that can be retained on the field for 2-3 years.
Napier grass is also called Elephant Grass due to its tallness and vigorous vegetative growth. The plants till freely and a single clump may produce more than 50 tillers under favorable climatic and soil conditions.
Feeding Quality of Super Napier Grass:
A research paper that studied the digestibility of dry matter of Super Napier grass-fed to adult Kenguri sheep. The study found that the digestibility of dry matter was 49.47%. The nutritive value of Super Napier grass was also evaluated in the same study. The digestible crude protein, digestible organic matter in dry matter, total digestible nutrients, and metabolizable energy were found to be 60.02 %, 47.80 %, 48.90%, and 7.39 MJ/kg DM, respectively.
