What a wonderful mini series,!!! The actors were exquisite, the stories were intertwined so well that it was totally engrossing n I couldn't help but watch both parts 1 and 2 back to back n stayed totally enthralled from beginning to end!!! A triumph!!!
Anyone who's family were displaced thru the war in Europe can relate to this production....making another life in a foreign country having to erase so much hoping to gain a peaceful life...reading the comments tells of the success that these immigrants had..thanks for posting.
Extremely entertaining. Also, one of Liam Neeson’s best early film appearances in which the promise of his future films can be observed. As a bonus, Natasha Richardson also appears in this series!
Thank you so much! My grandfather came through Ellis Island! From Iran. My grandmother was from Budapest, Hungary. They met in a church in Ohio. My father was first born at home in Elyria, Ohio in 1923. He died when I was a baby, so I didn't know him, just my grandmother, who died when I was 17. My dad was fluent in Hungarian though. As his brothers, they joined the Navy. My dad was there when they landed in France on that day.
Daddy was in the Navy in WW2! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 He got saved in the "90's and went Home in 2010 with his name in the Book of Life!! 🙏🏼 What a full, rich testimony he had! HALLELUJAH! ❤️✝️❤️
Better than most. Gorgeous costumes. Pretty fine acting. My father's father came through E. I. as a teen. He met a man who helped him on the boat, so he took that man's name. He slept under an apple cart in NYC, but got into the scrap iron business and became wealthy. My other grandparents came from Palestine and we have DuPonts, Guggenheims and our side which was poor. My Grandfather worked in restaurants on Sutter St. in SF and actually invented the California Green Salad for which he received no money and very little credit. His stories of life as a kid in Palestine were really interesting. My grandmother and her sister were educated at the Rothschild schools for Jewish girls in Jerusalem. They spoke perfect English with British accents. They looked like the poor peasants they were, but when people would comment on their looks, they understood and could answer back in a dignified British accent. Fooled lots of folks. Do preserve your family histories and label your photos. If you still have the elders who were the immigrants, interview them.

OH! Forgot! Ellis ISLAND was not the onely port of entry but it signifies the American immigrant culture. By the way, those who were rejected were sent back at the expense of those shipping lines that brought them over. In order to avoid this, Shipping lines conducted physicals at the point of departure.
I doubt he would care. His home was in Switzerland since 1958. He was a smart tax exile and from what I hear British taxes either are or were much higher than ours in the US.
'Twas a good serial.; quite a commentary on the American culture. The good guys won out; truth and justice and APPLE PIE AND MOTHERHOOD, etc, etc, ------- SOMe made it big others went on to lead normal American lives. NOW let's accept our modern day immigrants. USA IS STILL the number one immigrant land in the World. Ellis ISLAND is now a museum and there are plaques of those who came through, donated by descendents of immigrants.
Wonderful, miniseries. Note that the song “oh, Beautiful for spacious skies “was written by Irving Berlin. Berlin wrote fabulous songs, and he himself was a Russian immigrant. He was not gay. They chose the Star-Spangled Banner as our nation’s theme song because Berlin was a Jew. Never can get away from that old anti-Semitism. How very ignorant people are.
Irving Berlin was definitely not a gay person. He wrote unbelievably beautiful songs and he himself was a Jewish immigrant from Russia. He was married for many many decades to the love of his life.
I came up with the idea to put an alternate ending to where Michael Caine and Edward Woodward arrive in New York and visit Senator Phipps. Phipps asks Ah, "Winterbottom and Huntley. What gives me the pleasure of your visit?" Caine replies "I'm afraid there's no pleasure in our visit, Phipps. Where's Senator Santorelli?". Phipps then gets one of the maidservants to get him. Santorelli comes down the stairs and says "What can I do for you, gentlemen?" Woodward says "Are you Marco Santorelli?" Santorelli replies "Yes. I take it you must be the men from Socket Farm.". Caine replies "That's Scotland Yard, Mr. Santorelli". Woodward then says "What is your relationship with the Flaherty sisters?" Santorelli says "Who are they?". Woodward says "We got no time for games, Mr. Santorelli. We have in our possession sworn affidavits from the second class passengers who saw you dancing with Georgiana Flaherty on the ship nine years ago when you were emigrating from Italy.". Santorelli says "Oh. You mean Georgie O'Donnell?" Caine responds "Georgiana Flaherty and her sister Maryanne.". Santorelli says "What do you want with them?" Caine replies "These two ladies are involved in the murder of Lord Wexford and any information you provide us will be of some benefit to you at your trial in London." Santorelli asks "Are you accusing me of something, gentlemen?" Caine replies"Nothing really, Mr. Santorelli." Woodward says "Only espionage!". Santorelli retorts "If you're accusing me of being a spy, then which country do you think I'm spying for?!". Caine says "Miss Flaherty confessed her crime to you and your knowledge of the other Miss Flaherty murdering a crucial witness for the Crown, namely Kevin Murray, who was involved in Lord Wexford's murder is King's evidence. The fact you failed to report it to His Majesty's Consulate is a serious offence against the Crown.". Caine says to Senator Phipps. "We'll be leaving Mr. Santorelli to you on his own recognisance. We have other suspects in this case including the chap who tried to get Senator Santorelli deported.". Phipps replies "I take it that's Casey O'Donnell you're talking about.". Woodward says "Quite right, Phipps. He and is wife are wanted on two counts of harbouring a fugitive; namely their nieces Maryanne and Georgiana Flaherty." After the two men leave, Santorelli says to Phipps "What are they charging me with, dancing with an Irishwoman in steerage?!" Phipps replies "This is no laughing matter, Marco. According to them, you could be extradited to London and face the death penalty at the Old Bailey! The British government doesn't take kindly to third parties that are involved in a Fenian murder case!!". At the old Bailey, the judge sums up "This is one of the strangest murder cases involving the Irish Fenian movement! A doctor, a politician and a Russian singer who murdered a Cossack and stole his horse. With the the world locked in a war that will end all wars, His Majesty the Tsar gave his full consent to try the defendant involved in the death of that Cossack.". Then the sentences are handed down. "Maryanne Flaherty alias Bridget O'Donnell, for your part in the murder of Lord Wexford, you will be taken to a place of execution. There, you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul. Take her away!" "Georgiana Flaherty, alias Georgiana O'Donnell, the court finds you not guilty of the murder of Kevin Murray as the case had already been dealt with by a court in the United States. However, on the charge of aiding and abetting your sister, who was wanted for the murder of Lord Wexford, the court finds you guilty. You will be taken to a place of execution and there you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul. Take her away!". "Casey and Kathleen O'Donnell, the court finds you both guilty of harbouring a fugitive from the King's justice. Both of you shall be taken to a place of execution and there you will both be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your souls. Take them away!" "Doctor Charles Roger Travers, as the spouse of Lord Wexford's killer, namely Maryanne Flaherty alias Bridget O'Donnell, her confession to you pertaining to the murder of his lordship put you in possession of the King's evidence in which you should have reported to His Majesty's Consul in New York City. Because of your failure to do so, the court finds you guilty of espionage and sentences you to be taken to a place of execution and there hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul. Take him away!". "Former New York State Senator Marco Santorelli. So too, Maryanne Flaherty, alias Bridget O'Donnell confessed her crime to you in which you have therefore come to be in possession of the King's evidence to which you should have likewise reported to His Majesty's Consul. As such, the court finds you guilty of espionage. You shall be taken to a place of execution and there you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul. Take him away!". Yakov Rubinstein, alias Jake Rubin. The fact your village was attacked by Cossacks is irrelevant. The internal unrest in the Russian Empire has led the Tsar to give his permission to the Crown to prosecute you on the Tsar's behalf for the murder of Colonel Vladimir Anatolyevich Ligachev and for the theft of his horse. The court finds you guilty on both charges. You are to be taken to a place of execution. There you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May god have mercy on your soul. "Roscoe Haines. As the only coloured defendant in this court, by encouraging the clients at the brothel to finance Mr. Rubinstein's flight from the Tsar's justice, you are no less guilty of his crime. The court finds you guilty of aiding and abetting a fugitive on the Tsar's behalf and sentences you to be taken to a place of execution. There you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul. Take him away!". Then the executions take place. As Kathleen O'Donnell is led to the gallows, she sings America the Beautiful. As the trapdoor swings open under her feet the theme and closing sequence begins. Senator Ogden Phipps reading the evening newspaper. He puts down the paper, gets up from his chair and sadly goes upstairs. And as the he camera zooms in on the paper to the main headline which reads "Fenian immigrant spies executed", a single gunshot is heard. The sub headline reads "Former New York State Senator and high priced doctor hanged at Eltham Gaol for their part in the Wexford murder" then scrolls down to the two pictures of Santorelli and Travers and the captions read "Former New York State Senator Marco Santorelli" and "New York Doctor Carl Travers" respectively. Then the usual part of the opening sequence plays and then the end credits.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Cried a lot, though, so, all round good evening
Glad I found this miniseries in TH-cam. I always remember it and wanted to see it again
A lot of these mini series were good back in the day but pretty awful now, this one has stood the test of time❤
A lot of these mini series were good back in the day and they are still good.
I saw this when it first aired and it was an excellent re-watch!
Ellis Island was Richard Burton's last acting appearance before his death in 1984.
Needless to say, the cast in this mini-series was amazing.
Extremely entertaining.

FANTASTIC!! MANY THANKS.

Well done!! Fine production, great acting. Worth viewing again. With "America the Beautiful" as our anthem, how different our trajectory would be.

good movie ....thank you
I think that the music here(back ground music I mean) is same as that played in the film of Godfather.. Like some Italian touch
THANK YOU!!
Enjoyed the movie. Thanks.
I enjoyed it very much thank you
Cherie Lunghi is always authentic. one of the best roles I've seen for Lila Kaye, quiet and authoritative instead of overblown and bombastic.
Great Richard Burton and Faye Dunaway
Excellent!
The actor who plays the Doctor was also Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as a German officer! Amazing he can play good guys and baddies!
also a bridge too far Michael Byrne
Also, in "Force 10 from Navarone", released in 1978 (which, also, features Harrison Ford as the main protagonist).
Brilliant...God bless America for giving hope and courage to the immigrants landing at Ellis island
🎉😢❤

Great video.
should be re-released on tv for all USA citizens to see,

A little long in parts, but Faye Dunaway actually wasn't bad in this.
