    Attention to detail as always. I love the use of magnets as in stage carpentry we use them all the time. Most all plays/Opera/Broadway shows you'll see, there's magnets that shut doors with such precision and they always create a great sound. Especially when mic'd up for audio. So good as always, Take care !

    I really enjoyed the chest tour, especially how you made use of earth magnets. I have used them a lot in my tool chest (Shuster tool chest). Thanks for explaining how you attached everything.

    Hi Marty-
    Can't say that I'm going build a tool chest, but you gave me a ton to think about. It gets tiring looking through the drawers for tools and tool rolls. Are sometimes a pain.
    So I will use many of your ideas, if it's ok with you.

    Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! One idea...can you do something w/ the lid to make it a drawing surface? either as a drawing desk or as a place to keep drawings in use? that slope just exudes drafting table...

    • @MartyBacke
      @MartyBacke  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks :-) Regarding the lid, I have seen some examples where the lid is used as you suggest. It just doesn't fit my needs to do so.

    • @andrewwilcox2150
      @andrewwilcox2150 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The slant would be nice for that, but then it gets in the way of accessing your tools. The beauty of the slant lid is you can't pile stuff on top of it which would make it a hassle just to open the chest. All of the flat surfaces in my shop eventually collect junk, but my dutch tool chest is always free and ready to be opened.

    Thanks for the tour Marty, nice work! Did you have each tool in mind before you constructed the chest or did you place them afterward? If afterward, how did you make the place for the magnets? Some look like they would be hard to drill. Thanks again.

    • @MartyBacke
      @MartyBacke  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! The basics of the chest was built during a workshop, and is not my design. Over a period of about two years I settled on the placement of the various tools that I use. All of the tool holders and associated magnets were installed after the chest was built and in use, and weren't too difficult to do (I have a nice right-angle drill by Milwaukee that's very useful for operations like this).

    Incredible! Maybe should relabel this video “extremely magnetic OCD tool chest”. Not sure if the magnetic field repels sawdust somehow. Either way, very impressive. Thanks for the great video!

  • @12ozbuds

    The one thing I don't see is sawdust. Do you ever use them?

    • @MartyBacke
      @MartyBacke  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, it's only for show ;-) Perhaps if I shot this in 4K video you would be able to see the sawdust. I do clean my shop and tools so you will never see bunches of sawdust on my tools. Look at some of my other videos and perhaps you'll see that I use my tools.

    Too many magnets. I don’t like magnetizing all my tools. I notice a fine layer of metal dust gravitating toward all my tools and, being magnetized, is not so simple to wipe off. Likes to cling to the tool. Not a problem I guess if you don’t also use your shop to work iron or restore old tools.

    Awesome work! thanks for the inspiration! Hey just a thought for the ruler & straight edge... if you cut in little "finger recess/ pocket" into the lid, etc. behind where they sit it may make it easier to get your finger behind the ruler & straightedge to pull them off the magnets.

    • @gbwildlifeuk8269
      @gbwildlifeuk8269 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Montgomery standard practice. Before the pozidrive straight slot screws were always aligned to the piece screwed on. As here horizontal, which is the lie of the handle and in the likes of door hinges vertical, following the door height. On door hinges the alignment also served to prevent paint gathering in the slot, (as it would if horizontal) as well as looking neat.

    That's a very impressive box! I'm preparing to build my own, and yours is my favorite, by far.
    Are the dimensions the same as the plans the October 2013 Pop. Woodworking article or did you increase the height to make room for the drawer?
    How tall is that drawer?
    Thanks for the inspiration, Marty!

    • @MartyBacke
      @MartyBacke  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks.
      Mine was built during a workshop with Christopher Schwarz. Yes, we used the plans (his plans) from the Pop Wood article. The drawer is 2 - 3 inches in height. If you want to incorporate a drawer then I would first build the basic chest, determine what you are going to store in the bottom section, and then size the drawer based on the leftover space.
      Good luck with your build. I really enjoy using mine.

  • @bomaite1

    How is this a Dutch tool chest? I lived in Holland for 15 years and never saw anything like this. Most Dutch carpenters have a rectangular box with a removable lid. Nothing fancy, with maybe some provision to protect the handsaws and chisels. They have a minimum of tools and develop ways of eliminating tools they don't need so that they don't get a hernia lifting them. A collection like you have would only be found in a museum. Working carpenters are continually misplacing and damaging tools, or just wearing them out, so it doesn't make much sense to make a luxury resort for them. It is beautiful, what you have made, but I think that it will hinder your production rather than enhance it. Put more effort into the other things you make, although this has been a good exercise, I am sure.

    • @MartyBacke

      Keep in mind that woodworking is a side passion of mine, not my occupation. If you Google "dutch tool chest" you can better understand the name.

    • @2adamast

      It's based on an old chest that was brought from Amsterdam in the 1800. It's a simple nailed thing and became for C.Schwartz an alternative to the also traditional larger joined chests.

    I sense a high degree of obsessive compulsive behavior. Please pass on my condolences to your wife 😩. Beautiful tool chest! Why anybody would leave a thumbs down on this effort is beyond me. Keep up the good work!

    Inspiring tour Marty, thank you :) Impressive "tool density". Fantastic attention to detail, possibly OCD even! Could you please come and sort my workshop out? :D Chris has a taller, 3 section version, on casters, behind him near the start of his preview video. I think a 3 or 4 section version would suit me better, as I am out of bench/table space and could really use more, good tool storage. Getting them all into one storage unit would be a significant and worthwhile achievement.

      Thank you. Yes, everyone arrives at their own customized solution. But this tool chest design provides a good foundation for adapting. Good luck with yours.

    I've watched this a few times Marty and probably commented before. I use a Snap-on type red steel tool chest, my first Grandson has inspired me to make something like yours for all my favourite tools so that it can go to him eventually. I'll be using yours as a resource when I start it. Lovely job ;-)

    Nice tool chest . Do you keep a picture of each drawer? I could not remember where I put all my tools but I am 67 , so I need all the help I can get. What table saw do you use ?

      Thanks. No, I used the chest all the time so I have no difficulty remembering where everything is. I have a 3hp Delta Unisaw from the early 90's.

    We clearly have differing opinions as to the main function of a toolchest. I see that you permanently mount the front cover on the back of the chest so where do you keep the battens?

    • @MartyBacke
      @MartyBacke  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, doesn't everyone have different opinions on how tool chests are built and used? That's a good thing in my opinion. This Dutch Tool Chest (as documented in the Popular Woodworking article) only has one center batten. I didn't show it, but it rests between the lid and the back of the tool chest.
