Hey guys, I’m posting new content about learning, working and living better on my main channel. If you enjoyed this video, make sure you check it out: th-cam.com/users/ScottHYoungVid
These blogs are really useful. I'm currently teaching myself A-levels (British high school diploma) and it's always really nice to stumble upon the odd fellow self-teacher and pick up a few tips. Moreover, the way you described and justified self-taught learning really motivates and inspires me. I'm not sure if you'll ever read this Scott, but thanks anyway!! :)
I absolutely agree. I've gone through the traditional university setting and self education path. There are pros and cons to each path. Most societies expect ALL young adults to go to the university level immediately after high school. I think this is a bad approach to educating society. Everyone is at different levels of preparedness for higher education. No one should go into debt because they should do something.
I think the 1 million figure is to be taken with a pinch of salt. It benifits the university's for it to be as high as possible so they are incentivised to pick a favorable way of calculating the figure. Any way it's too late for me iv done my degree but I would recommend a gap year /self study year ever before you start paying fees and if you find you want to change course you still used a year of your time but didn't gain a years worth of loans. Might also let you get your driver's licence if you haven't managed to cram it in already.
My intrinsic motivation/curiosity says ''I just want to have the adventure to explore and get to know this topic thoroughly from the inside-out'', and that quality and fun of learning just didn't work like this on university. Starting Physics and Astronomy bachelor all on my own, starting today (wish me luck :p)...
yea get a job then what after your earning over 100k a year, live below your means to save money so you could end up being miserable and having all kinds of problems in your life in general it really bothers me also that people always think about money when the most successful people in thee existence of this world never put money as their number one priority to achieving what they wanted!
Wow. Profound statement. Keen observation. For me, learning(independent reading, observing my environment, studying human behavior etc) is a lifelong endeavor. I wish more people would see it that way. Too many people act as if that piece of paper, cap and gown means the end of learning; go make money, collect material things and start family.
Woah. I'm 19 and learning Calculus and Quantum mechanics for the exact same reason. I really want to get into understanding the full grasp of mathematics by learning axiometric theory
@@johnanguiano5128 I'm at high school, and also love mathematics. Calculus, classical and quantum (I know the history and some things, but not as much as classical mechanics) mechanics, electricity, magnetism. I feel teachers are not strict enough. I mean, they show you the theme, this, that, etc. But they don't effort to explain the topic deeply. I don't know how high schools teachers are in the US, but in Argentina they (most of them) are bad teachers. I would love to teach myself, officialy. I mean, I teach myself in my free time, I love learning, it is the only thing that matters. Reasoning is immortal; everything else, mortal.
Absolutely correct. The future of education isn't in conventional schools, a laptop can provide access to just about any helpful resource in the process of learning something. The organization of the few but key resources necessary to provide effective education is the future in every sense - visionary, financial, entrepreneurial; anyone want to join me?
J.G. Finch I have learned so much teaching myself. I have been teaching myself chemistry and math for about a year. Plan on doing it untilI die. Being autistic( special ed kid) I can learn things but it takes me a lot slower pace than others. My goal is to become solid in chemistry, math and then later physics. I enjoy them all but the one thing that is an obstacle is time. They are all beautiful and deep information to learn. Thanks this video. Love your points.
I believe there needs to be a peer review process-critique . Present your learning “project” along with your process, methods, and mentors used to learn material to others. This becomes your resume of work performed and helps others understand your background work. This system will grow with time and can be used to gain experience.
Thank you... This is really helpful and inspiring and can be applied to other subjects as well. Just came across your interview with Barbara in MOOC...would love to see more updates from you in regards to your language challenge and how far you have made it and your experiences. :)
So true. I wish I knew that too. I remember taking chemistry at a community college in the summer and a high school student was there with her mom. She was very motivated and a bright girl. this method saves lots of money!
Man, I wish that I had the internet and known this fellow prior to studying physics. Nearly every uni I attended prior to Oregon State Uni was worthless. Not a single textbook nor professor ever taught well enough that most of us understand what was lectured. And the unis/profs could care less.....
That sucks man, unfortunately I had to quit the bachelor study of Physics and Astronomy and I will continue it on my own. Don't let school ruin your education !!
Couldn't you be more objective grading your exams / quizzes if you gave no partial credit? 100% if you got it correct, 0 if you got it wrong. If you then fail an exam, give yourself a little more time to pass it and understand it better. I know Sal Khan of Khan academy advocates getting a full understanding before moving on to the next subject. I'm suggesting this as a general rule for self-teaching yourself. What do you think?
dude how does the information sink in? it sinks in when its really interesting but what about garbage like the civil war, when i read that book cover to cover i only recalled about 5% of the information and it was all fragmented
No dude, the whole point he's trying to make is just how unnecessarily bureaucratic school can be. Self-teaching gets to the heart of the learning process without the extra stuff.
I think this type of mentality isn't so practical. Depending of what you want to do some areas requires to be learned almost "100%" while other will require just some superficial insight.
I have never been in schoold I was always at home teaching myself theory of realitivity quantum mechanics classacial mechanics mechanics basic physics wave funciton string theory multiverse etc sorry I have iq of 140 so it is easy lol

This is really cool. I think a lot of people would benefit from learning like this. The flow state is a game changer.

Particle Config. How is it going??
it annoys me that some (or most) people think that the purpose of learning something is to get a job....
Until things needed in life are completely free, people will always think that way.

It is a big problem when stuck with something and have nobody who can help
There are a ton of websites that you can ask people.

I agree, I found this to work really well for me
If I were still in HS I'd do this before college. while going to a community college for gen eds. One would start school way ahead of the game.

Haha, those pre-covid comments are both hilarious and prophetic.
