I've been using my trench hawk for a few years now and have had no issues. I think for a person on a budget you really can't beat cold steel products.

I definitely like the Trench Hawk more than the War Hawk. The spike won't get caught in material.
I did security in Iraq but we carried a knife and a tomahawk as our edge weapon but we were issued a Cold Steel trench hawk and the British SAS also carried a Cold Steel trench hawk also in Iraq but I thought the Cold Steel trench hawk had better balanced then the Cold Steel war hawk tomahawk
How did you guys carry it?

There are much better hawks for cqb than the unwieldy, heavy trench hawk, and the trainer is very unrealistic to train with as it's nowhere near the weight of the actual hawk, same thing with most "training hawks"
I've had a cold steel kukri and it was an incredible work horse (delimbing trees, splitting wood, chopping wood) and it was incredibly durable and easy to sharpen. I'm looking into one of these to just target practice

Thanks Aaron for another fair and objective review . It's cool to see these Cold Steel "tactical" hawks in action , instead of merely staring at them in the catalogs . Huge fan of C.S. stuff ( SRKs , and way too many others to list here ) . Currently own two "modded" Trail Hawks ; one's a "beater" for bushcraft/camp/skills practice use - the other goes with me on ALL other outings , so it's not likely that I'll be purchasing either of these rugged tactical combat Hawks soon . But at least now everyone has seen and heard what they're capable of , thanks to this honest review . All God's best to you and your family . Glenn

A large Mag-Light ring and leather loop is a good option for belt carry in most situations. I have a War Hawk, as I prefer the spike and the blade is a better shape. As for mods, I noticed that the Allen bolts provided did not go all the way through Chicago-type nuts on the handle, so I replaced them with slightly longer hardened steel black bolts and cranked them down. They're much better than the standard bolts, and I trust them not to break. Then I covered the whole handle with MTB inner tube, right up to the lower bolt. It was a bitch to get on, but now the handle feels sticky and has a bit of shock-proofing. I also sharpened and polished up the edges of the angled spike. I pretty much always go for Cold Steel, and have one of the very first Tantos from the mid-80s.

Talon grip and/or stippling would seriously improve them. And a hickory handle would be pretty simple by running down the center with a table saw.

I tried a few hawks out as a defensive tool, but they felt far to dangerous to myself 😐. So I tried the cold steel war hammer which was good, but ultimately went for the shorter M48 War Hammer. Perfect size, feels right, you can choke up and spin the head 180° without the ridk of cutting yourself. I know the handles can break, but I'm not torturing it like most on TH-cam. They are cheap enough to buy a few in reserve and it's quite easy to make your own wooden handle with only drill and a few attachments. Keep up with these great videos, much appreciated.
I never thought of these as something you would take out to the woods and do any bush craft type of stuff. Just the names alone should pretty much tell you what these were designed for.

Good video. I have the spike tomahawk from cold steel and I love it . I do wish that they made one with the exact same shape just like 25% bigger and heavier with a handle a few inches longer . kinda a shorter version of a full length axe but in a heavier longer distance spike tomahawk . the extra weight will make the chopping. Deeper and hit harder when chopping . plus the extra handle length gives the user to modify the length to the perfect swing for the user .
Thanks for the test Aaron. Just ordered a War Hawk. What a good looking (and functioning) unit. It might have set me back $109 but that's because the Oz $ isn't strong now. Still worth it though.
I'd love your take on the Condor Atrox too. Bit of a Niche knife. The thing is just an Apocalypse waiting to happen. The two tone handle matches my Honey Badger Black and Maple perfectly. Very interesting blade and I'd like to see your take on where it would fit in (I still haven't figured it out yet apart from Apocalypse machete/short sword.

I know this video has been out for over a year. I just wanted to say I found the spike on the trench hawk is good for digging out weed taproots and breaking up ice buildup outside in the winter. It'll also go through most of a phonebook, ha ha.
I bought my war hawk a few years ago and it's a GREAT spend but there are major misconceptions about it. This is not a fighting tomahawk in the same sense most people think. When you say tomahawk most people think of the Native Americans, but their war hawks were much taller with a very small head. A lot of the confusion comes from the Mel Gibson movie the Patriot and the video game AC 3.
Although there are versions like this that existed back then, they were more tool than weapon, mostly a back-up weapon for your back-up weapon. Reasons being, is that this axe shaft is wayyy to god-damn short and the head is too heavy, you have to hold it near the middle to have total control of its swings (in a fight). I will say it is a fairly good throwing axe, at 8 feet (approx) with 30 minutes of practice you have a 50-70% chance of landing either the head or the spike.
It's true that you see a fair amount of combat videos that exploit the design of this tomahawk in particular, but what you have to remember is those videos are drills, where the victim does not resist, not sparring where they're fighting back. I've done some light sparring where we apply no force and have the sheathes on (I LOVE the sheath to this) and I've lost every time even with a shield. It's true that you can yank the enemy weapon away quite reliably, but at such short distance you may as well grapple, because the enemy will grapple you or knee you in the kidney or punch you.
It's just too short and too heavy on one end. Wearing gloves is a must for every tool on earth, but I feel you need an extra sticky glove to use this axe for any purpose for a lengthy period of time. Also be sure to bring an Alan wrench with you as its nuggets do come loose if your chopping wood. I actually like that, it's better than nothing, some axes I couldn't fix at all after the tang got loose.
I would say all in all, this is a very stylish camping axe, not a war-axe. Too short, too heavy, good for wood, not for people. The weight of this weapon would be completely acceptable... if the shaft was significantly longer, by about a foot you could still have your camping hatchet, and a much more effective combat tool. If you needed to keep it this short, you need to remove some of the weight to it, add a better counter weight, and probably remove the spike, you really don't need it for combat if you have the head this big, with such a short handle its more likely to stab you!

You should have also reviewed the Cold Steel Spike Hawk, its a real Tomahawk.
When you mentioned making spears I thought about how in a “zombie apocalypse” type scenario it might be a good idea to make wooden spears when you could just so you’d have several weapons to use before you had to degrade your axe in combat. Also spears have much more reach than an axe. That spike on the axe is a guaranteed one shot to a zombie though.

I own multiple Coldsteel hawks for many years. My favorite is the WARHAWK!! I do all the hard use utility work w\ it, Flawless! as a fighting hawk? Jury is still out, (no fights lined up to test it, lol)

Awesome video. I own one of the CS trench hawks..scary, scary weapon! I definitely own better bush craft hatchets/axes but the hawk will still get the job done. Anything made by Cold Steel and now Lynn Thompson's Never Unarmed will be awesome.

A basic, nylon or leather hardware store hammer loop is the best way to carry a tomahawk - for me, at least.
Love a tomohawk can do without the spike tho seen ppl get them in the back over extending when chopping

Is there a technical reason why the don't put a pry bar end at the bottom of the handle. It would make it a better breaching tool for urban environments.
I think to be able to withstand such strain then the entire shaft needs to be full tang steel. Would love a pry bar end though.

I have them Both I like the Warhawk better the spike is more usable and I do use it to pick up wooden stuff is a spike like a picaroon. Kinda I got them for 25 bucks apiece so it was a no-brainer to buy them and they’re both fun. they both are OK to.

old geccko 1055 will do the same thing fairly quickly unless your gonna sharpen it all the time u can get 1095 steel and better made tomahawks even gransfors bruks sells a great one with much better steel but it will cost u a good amount more than these lower grade tomahawks try reliance outfitters and see what they have for tomahawks at the moment anything they carry would be better and cheaper than a gransfors or a lot of other higher end tomahawks.

For some reason the war hawk sells on average for $10 to $20 more. I have several trench hawks & I want the war hawk. I bought screws that were a pinch longer ( just me. I saw empty threads ) I have used the trench hawk a LOT! I used it at the axe cage o managed. It is a nit on the light side for axe throwing. & proper length. I had to bob the spike. I did 2 with a bobbed spike( trick shots😁)
Why not buy an extra handle and cut it down? Then you could rig it for under the jacket carry, though the heads huge on those. I might do that though. Think actual fighting, I'd have to choke up on a 30 ounce tomahawk pretty tight, but the long handle is blocking and striking also, and it allows two handed use. My heaviest tomahawk is a CRKT Woods Chogan at 31ounces I think. I got the long hickory handle customized with Constrictor Knots in large tarred bankline, hitched on tight using spikes so they create a powerful stationary grip aligned with the blade. I have a lanyard on it, but never use it because I can grip so well I can whip 2 hard accurate chops per second striking both sides of a vertical log. I just leave my lanyard twisted up over the hammer poll, and I can throw it great that way as well. My throwing grip is my chopping grip also, but its tactile, I don't have to look at the tomahawk to know its orientation and grip. If I purchase one of these, I will definitely purchase two spare handles and cut one down, and will hitch Constrictors strategically on all of the handles. I have to choke up almost behind the beard of my Woods Chogan for fighting it because I can swing it harder than I am strong with the grip I got, and if I were to miss, Id definitely over swing far. I should get stronger working out with tomahawks now, but I got lots of serious old injuries, might not be able to accomplish much. Anyway, I got a choke up fighting grip hitched on also. The cool thing is that while the head on my chogan is now captive, I can knock it down far enough mineral oil under the handle under the head. Tomahawk's are cool AF man. Extremely useful too, like that feather stick you were carving. I like the blocking and hand protection a long spike provides, but I prefer not to be stuck to my opponent, and a hammer poll is more useful, as I'd never bust into anyone's door anywhere in the world because Im not a goddamned fascist. Im not sure yet which tomahawks I will buy next. Good informative vid though. The spike being stuck into the opponent concern reminds me of cane fighting where everyone seems to think hooking is a good idea, but that ties your weapon to your opponent, its better to have an inward pointed horn on the J handle and to use that to make them move the leg themselves or whatever, without being stuck to them. I dig these sheath's.

I just don't understand the manufactures, these things should be called breaching tools not hawks .Just like the blade magazine a months back testing what they called hawks and none of them were true Hawks, not one head was tied to the halves also none of the heads slid of the halves those would be true hawks. But I do have the cold steel for 2 years took on every trip it did everything I ask of it and was ready for more plus I used it around the house on the wood pile you can split with it if you choose the wright size wood to split. But I am back to my Chogan with the hammer head for me this is the complete Hawk I have yet to find a draw back to it and with the hammer head I have made wedges at camp and slit larder wood it is my favorite of the Hawks . Happy Trails great complete revue .
tomahawks or just "hawks" are differentiated by their use, hawks are primarily used as a weapon not wood processing (that would be a hatchet, an axe used primarily for wood processing) so it is appropriate for CS to designate their war hawk and tench hawk as "hawks".

Very beautiful hawks both. I purchased a Trench Hawk from Czeck Republic for 73 euros, about $82+, this includes 15 euros shipping, for Christmas gift for my son. In my country Greece they selling the Trench Hawk at the lowest price 84.90 euros.....about $96+ and the highest price about 90+ euros!!!! Not includes shipping!!! Also, I like and the War Hawk and I will buy it for me. Excellent results from Cold Steel combines reliability, price and of course design!!!!
What I like about Cold Steel is they make affordable tough beater products, I will hard them. I am not a fan of their ridiculous spine wacking videos.
I would never recommend one of the super hard pain in the ass steels for an axe. The axe is inherently more prone to have edge damage when cutting wood because you could miss and hit a rock or even potentially hit a piece of metal like a nail, BB or a bullet (its more common than you'd think because trees will absorb nails) and fixing that damage should be a relatively easy task. For a knife not intended to hack into something, sure the harder steels are fine

Lol. If you're talking about zombies that need decapitating or a bullet to the brain to kill then no an axe or tomahawk is not a good idea. An axe would struggle to destroy the brain without getting stuck. You're better off with a kukri or machete to cut the head off completely from the neck up.

Good review, but I don't think these lighter hawks are optimal for "breaching" if we;re talking about a quick entry or possibly exit from a building or vehicle.
Although they can cut and chop well, the lighter hawks such as these are better as weapons than tools. They function more like knives or machetes than axes or hawks. And that isn't a bad thing if you just happen to like their design or configuration. I personally would select a more traditional axe or tomahawk for wood processing or breaching and rescue.
These are 29 and 30 ounces so they are on the heavy side of average tomahawk I believe. I got a Woods Chogan at 31 ounces, and I know its heavy, and sticks a throw deep with authority. It also chops wood great. I have to lightweight 16 and 17 ounce modern hawk's similar to these except one is a hammer poll. Those have a thick forward wedge blade, and wont stick throws or stick into log for storing and can only chop something which is very solidly bedded or they bounce, regardless of sharpness. These are heavy enough to use effectively for everything, but need grip augmentation and probably require choking up close for fighting because the weight. I wouldn't want one any heavier really, though I dig my CRKT Woods Chogan even at 31 ounces. Im thinking 24 ounces in a good design is what Im interested in now.
@@danhaywood5696 thanks for the answer. I don't remember exactly when I watched this film but since then I have acquired a pair of the sog tomahawks but I can't remember what they call them. I think they were called the turbo or battle Hawks or something like that. And then my younger brother gave me one of the tomahawks with the polished metal and my father gave me a small ax from trade and I have an old ax that I found some place. Maybe one day when I get around to organizing my survival gear and I start playing with the different tools and weapons I will keep in mind the information you passed along here.
The Cold Steel spike hawk may be perfect for you, it's medium weight, but long hickory handle. Customize its handle for grip and head retention and length and its badass. Purchase a sheath off etsy for it probably or make one. The CRKT Woods Kangee is a very heavy traditional spike tomahawk at ~ 31 ounces, and CRKT is solid. The long Tennessee Hickory handles on those should have the manufacturer finish sanded and scraped off, can use its own head blade to do so. Then rub in Mineral Oil repeatedly with a cotton rag which can be picked up and used whenever, once its impregnated with the oil, which is good on the metal as well. It will offer better grip, especially if damp. For serious use and thus grip, and safety, Almost all handles on any pole weapon or swinging tool, needs Constrictor knots hitched on using spikes. The power and control that provides is a magnitude greater, and allows one to actually make full use of such implements. Mineral Oil does not have spontaneous combustion danger, whereas most other handle finish applications such as Linseed Oil will absolutely spontaneously combust at anytime if a mistake is made in handling. Maybe weeks later, but it will happen. Mineral Oil is cheap and available at the grocery store. Nobody seems to know about constrictors. So with almost any pole handle weapon, I have a powerful advantage over a similar armed opponent, regardless of any gloves. Especially in wet conditions where the greatest danger would be them losing their weapon and it flying or richocheting into me. I hitch them onto everything I can. Basic application of such is possible to easily learn, but there is skill and craftmanship involved. It's also very dangerous, because it requires dead lift strength application and a mistake or snapped cord, will likely result in weapon being ripped and embedded into applicant. It's easy for me because I spent most of my life as a solo sailor, and have applied thousands of these to almost everything and in every size from sail thread on up 1" rope or so.
Every supposedly knowledgeable sailor will tell you the bowline is the most useful knot, but 99.9% are fakes or lucky and never solo, and that's just what they all say. The Constrictor is by far the most important knot, and unique in the power of its properties. Ive tied more constrictors several times over than any other knot ever. Both single and double. Tomahawk's are great for boarding boats and fighting, because they act as hooks. I never fought with one for real, but have with hammers and oars. The oars I was attacked with in every circumstance and took them and hit my opponent repeatedly with their own oar, before they got past it and we went hand to hand and other weapons. One fucker bit most of my ear mostly off

If I was gonna get a tomahawk I’d have to look for something better than both of these but the price is right but you get what you pay for but I do like seeing blades in action I do own two tomahawks both Americans made and hand made one in 1095 from H&R and the other is in 6150 steel made by Polaris I believe both with hickory handles and great leather work reliance outfitters used to sell the one in 6150 but the one in 1095 is hand made by a tomahawk throwing ex champion and took 3 months to get after I ordered but I love them both plus I hate the tang being 4 to 5 inch long when the handle is like 18 inchs I’ll pass to bad because I like the look of them but I can’t trust them plus the 1055 on My hickory handled cold steel tomahawk was really soft and was destroyed after 3 days camping I did fix it but took hours even with how soft the 1055 was but it was so destroyed it still took hours even with large diamond stones and a ken onion grinder.
Go with full tang. Every time i have bought one of these with the propylene handle they have always broke

I am interested in the Thai Sword Machete, but I fear buying one and it breaking as I have read in several reviews. And owners complain that Cold Steel won't repair or replace their faulty products.
@@MasterK9Trainer yes i have seen mixed reviews on the Thai machete. Condor makes a similar machete and it is great i own a few different machetes from condor and none of them have broken. Condor also makes a full tang war tomahawk that is good.

It is too dangerous for combat. Lots of danger in the spike on the back of it. There is no doubt it would breach a door in seconds. It is more of a backpack size fireman's axe.
I have the trench hawk trainer and I can't wait to a real one. Much better head for home defense.
