When I first saw the scene I didn’t even realize it was a score, I thought the creature itself was producing this noise
I think that's the beauty of the scene and the soundtrack used in the scene. It's almost as if the shimmer is corrupting the very film itself. Very fitting for the climax of the film, if you ask me.
I think that's part of the idea, like a strange, alien musical sequence.
I agree, the organism is mutating our whole world beyond any recognizable comprehension. A fate mostly likely to lead to chaos and uncontrolled carnage...Then fades away into complete obscurity and mystery.

Am I the only that loved this beat. It feels calming and ethereal. Probably because I am a fan of Bjork Philip Glass and Muse and other futuristic industrial artists that I find this kind of music very surreal and puts me in a whimsical place above the skies into the deepest parts of the universe and for me that's hypnotic and transcendent.

I don't think any soundtrack, maybe even film, has ever encapsulated the true definition of what an alien is better. It is truly nothing like us - doesn't speak to us, doesn't look like us, might amuse us, might petrify us. Something so odd we don't know if we can go near it; the definition of uncertainty, anxiety and inconceivability.

It sounds like an alien creature attempting to communicate with us, and they're repeating the same phrase over and over and getting increasingly frustrated at our inability to understand, but then they collect themselves and carry on trying to communicate
Where lies the strangling fruit that came from the hand of the sinner I shall bring forth the seeds of the dead to share with the worms that gather in the darkness and surround the world with the power of their lives while from the dimlit halls of other places forms that never were and never could be writhe for the impatience of the few who never saw what could have been. In the black water with the sun shining at midnight, those fruit shall come ripe and in the darkness of that which is golden shall split open to reveal the revelation of the fatal softness in the earth. The shadows of the abyss are like the petals of a monstrous flower that shall blossom within the skull and expand the mind beyond what any man can bear, but whether it decays under the earth or above on green fields, or out to sea or in the very air, all shall come to revelation, and to revel, in the knowledge of the strangling fruit-and the hand of the sinner shall rejoice, for there is no sin in shadow or in light that the seeds of the dead cannot forgive.

“What he wants?”
“I don’t think he wants anything”
That concept terrifies me to the core.
And then people come to a conclusion that that line was simply saying "I don't know what it wants." And roll their eyes.
It says more than that dammit, she didn't know even if it wanted anything. The creature is more like fire than a living entity. Fire burns not because of hatred nor because it wants anything.
It simply exists and thus; does.
@@silver1340 exactly, that thing was a biological / chemical / physical process… it’s so many things and most of them we can’t comprehend
@@jakesanders136 Yes BUT it is because we know how fire works. Now think of some black fire, it spreads seemingly randomly, burns some things and not others, and what it burns keep changing all the time without any apparent reason. We don't know how to stop it. Now that's pretty scary. Next step is : this fire can turn into something that looks exactly like a human, the imitation is almost perfect, it can even speak. And it goes on to spread more and more, using his human appearance to go through our vigilance ...
In a sense, it is truly alien, because it's alive in a whole different way than we are. It might be more of an ongoing cycle than life in the sense that we know it as. An extremely advanced process, that thinks but not intentionally.
I believe "intentions" are our very own human way to express our perception of the chemicals reactions that animate us. We believe to be different than fire because what we feel seems different to us, tho i believe it is not by any mean.

The 4 notes in the music that sounds "beep boop beep boop" is a set of notes called the 'dies irae'.
We've been associating those notes with 'death' for hundreds of years. It was set of notes created by the gregorian catholic church to be played at funerals. If you pay enough attention, you can hear these 4 notes in every movie's soundtrack. Making the scene feels more grim. Example : mufasa's death in Lion King. You can hear the notes in the soundtrack.
yes but the design of the sound here is incredible, it sounds so otherworldly and metallic, i cant explain why but i love it

Yall I don't get it halp
I think someone else already said that, but I have to share my observation here. Notice, how in the beginning of the movie, when the comet is shown flying towards Earth, we hear guitar music, something well known to us. It sounds, let's say, "normal". Yet, when the story progresses, you can hear some synths thrown around, instruments, that are rather associated with aliens and unknown things. At the end, of course, the music; which is playing, when Lena gets to the lighthouse and meets the alien, the music is completly made of synths and ambient hum. This gives a next layer of immersion, where the Shimmer shifts and transforms even the music. I gotta say, this movie is an underrated masterpiece. It's a shame, that not that much people know about it.
You just sold the movie to me. Bravo. This comment section is so good
Have you read the trilogy? I honestly can't watch the movie, it falls so short of the cosmic horror so exquisitely captured in the book.
this was so spot on-
@@allthingsdestructive
Cosmic horror is by definition impossible to fully capturate in a movie. That Is beacouse in a book, most of the horror is created by your own immagination trying to visualize what you are reading.
In a movie there is nothing to imagine beacouse it it directly showed to you.
That negates the fear of the unknown.
So no movie will EVER be able to capture the fear of the unknown, the only thing that comes close is a movie that shows a dark place where you can't see anything in it, beacouse again, the movie ISN'T showing you anything, so you are left wandering what might come out of the darkness, but if something does eventually comes out, it will never be as scary as what you expected.
@@allthingsdestructive There's a book trilogy?? Had no idea, guess it's going on my reading list!

I think part of why this is so good is that the rest of the soundtrack has lots of acoustic elements up until this part, and then, at the center, things become completely alien, and the soundtrack reflects that.
good analysis!
Yes this puts it in a new view
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."

To be fair Black Panther had a much more powerful impact culturally speaking, while Annihilation was a rip off since I went to the movies expecting an adaption of THE FUCKING BOOK IT'S BASED OFF OF WHICH NONE OF WHICH WAS IN THE GODDAMN MOVIE
Yes the movie was "okay" but claiming it to be based off the book, serve something completely different and have it not even be all the intresting after get expcations high is a fucking cop out
SummerSong Black Panther felt like a normal marvel movie, this movie was more unique IMO.
@@alexjohnson7915 normal to you, sure. But for many in the black community and in regards to black cinema it's major. Annihilation is unique in the handling of sci-fi and brings new ideas for aliens, however it's still a cop out claiming to be based off the book when really all it shares is the title name.
Maybe had Annihilation chosen a different name and chose to wait say a month or so after Black Panther it would have gained more ground. To be fair Black Panther has been hyped and very much anticipated since it's announcement and Annilahtion didn't receive much exposure or have as many advertisements which couldve factored into people not knowing what the movie even was

Is this a genre cuz I need more of this. It's the perfect sound of dread, like when you get curious about something and you realise it would have been better if you never learnt about it. I love this so much.
It's hard to classify, but the guy who made this soundtrack has made a few others that have similarly creepy songs. Check out the song "Hacking/Cutting" from the Ex Machina soundtrack
Check out the Utopia (british tv show) music, that guy also makes great music with a sense of dread using warped and unconventional noises.
The soundtrack from IXION has very similar vibes
My brother, who is the DM of our old D&D campaign, used this track to introduce our very first mind flayer. He even timed his narration of our near-dead party gazing upon this “unearthly, psychic nightmare being” to pause naturally between the deeper notes. 10/10 would recommend; never felt genuine almost-dread from a D&D campaign until that session. Genuine chills for the whole party!
Since Im always stoned playing I would hug my DM and slowly drift into insanity. You know weed can cause psychosis and Im convinced Ill get one if I listen to this while roleplaying.

It sounds like the universe.
Like the actual frequency of the universe.
It sounds like the singing of some cosmic alien mermaid lurring you in for your death.
Its hypnotyzing.
Its what the budhist nirvana would sound like if it was put in sound form.
I believe that what the being is doing is not something from our universe, but the macr verse. The being left it's place to enter the universe, somewhere where it could have power, and learn. It happen to land in the everglades seeking, learning, giving. For example the bear may have been a regular bear until the force of the being learned it's ways and then made it better through it's knowledge. once the creature was done it left a piece inside as most macroverse beings do. Inside to learn and study. The being was interested in life and what it was about. The bear was still itself but unaware and transformed aching in pain because of its evolution. Of course the bear became an apex predator but at a sacrifice. The shimmer is just the limit of the being, as it is restricted in our universe. This being was interested in life and wanted to make it better. The one question or doubt I have is how the being spread, in one way or as a radiance. I also wonder why life, maybe that's the first thing it noticed as it enter our universe.
Sorry I just saw your comment and had to vent

Physicists have recorded the universe. Close, and far. Doesn't sound like this. Your description is just some idealistic, irrational, happy shit that people, for whatever reason, like to say. Probably has more to do with how you feel than what this actually sounds like. Stop doing acid bro.

It's every composer's dream to create that particular track with that one sound or melody that just attaches itself to a movie or franchise for eternity. Very few manage to do this. Geoff Barrow really accomplished this.
