  • If your internet goes down - or PSN crashes can you still play your games? Your disc based games?
    Short answer = YES!
    I got 🔥 fired up by a troll on Twitter. I know I know... But also saw there was not really a good video showing this topic, (that I saw in my brief search). If someone was curious. So I figured why not record this working if people are unsure. I do cut off at the end because it showed my email and I don't have edit tools to blur that. Also during Far Cry I mention (but cut myself off) - I say a game made in 2022 might need a more advanced firmware as a base to run on? but I'm not sure of that - they might also all be required to just run on vanilla ps4 1.0 firmware or whatever? Not sure. But you can update a firmware via USB stick anyway if that was necessary (I dont think it would be).
    Obviously console is not designed for this - no patches, no multi-player, no store, no friends lists. and if it's not a primary console - no digital games in my case! (Primary console digital games still work). And when the time chip (technical name ha-ha) keeping track of trophies time/date on the PS4 dies that's a different story. Sony has to patch that or you gotta replace a battery - entirely different subject. Apples and Oranges.
    But this is showning that discs don't need PSN to be verified or play. Literally PS4 management stood on that stage at E3 years ago and said "ps4 games do not need to be always online". So we knew this.

    Using DVD games is still better than buying games from the store, think if one day your home can't connect to the internet, DVD is still the best choice.

    • @squidracerX
      @squidracerX  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I still like buying a physical game -- but I dont know if its any "better" these days -- heck one of the ps5 models doesn't have a disc drive.
      If you cant connect to the internet -- thats literally what this video is about -- you can still play any games you've downloaded. So in that regard its no different, digital or disc.
      Any game you didn't download obviously a disc would be the better option (you cant download a game with no internet). But then if you have no internet - you cant download any patches - and like we see with Cyberpunk 2077, that game was broken off the disc. So really, DVD based games arent any better these days if the internet goes down.
      Or if you use 2 PS4's like i do, on my non-primary console if the net is down i cant play my digital games. But on the other hand, I have my nephew on the other console (in another state) -- any digital game I buy, he basically gets a copy free. So i basically only buy digital now.
      When am I really not going to have internet anyway? (during a power outage when I cant play my console anyway?). A few days after a move? But any downloaded games still work.
      So there are pros and cons to both digital and physical.
      Modern games are so multiplayer and online heavy - whether thats a day one 40gb patch, or an always online component, that not having internet even makes disc based games pretty crappy these days.
      And if Xbox gets its way, we'll be streaming games one day soon anyway. Not to mention many modern games dont even get official physical releases these days, some get the "limited run" treatment at best.
      So yeah, i dont think its black and white anymore, id say ps3 era and before you could definitively say discs were better, I'm not so sure in the Ps5 era.

    I have a PS4. I only play single player (AC Odyssey) or local multiplayer (Crash Team Racing, PGA) The day they completely abandon split screen and offline players will be very sad...

    • @squidracerX
      @squidracerX  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it would be sad if all games were just online multiplayer games. But thats not up to the consoles, its up to the game makers/developers. And there are still tons of couch co-op games being made. And Sony has said they are really sticking with the single player narrative games like God of War and Last of Us, so i dont think it will be an issue? The biggest games of the year in 2023 on each console are single player games (Balders Gate, Starfield, Zelda). So I think we are safe :)
      But this video isn't about online multiplayer games -- its about "can single player games (like you enjoy) play offline when PSN goes down". And yes you can play your single player and couch co-op digital games and your disc based games offline (as long as they arent online focused games or "always online").
      The guy I was talking to on Twitter said you cant play single player games when PSN goes down, his were disc based even, but digital games will work as well. In my example I cant play the digital games offline - but that is only because this is technically my "back-up" ps4 since Im sharing games with my 6 year old nephew on my other playstation at his house.
      But if you have just one ps4 you use, yeah all games that make logical sense to work offline will work offline. A new game wont install patches etc, but again common sense that they wouldn't.

    Well I don't use my pc anymore, I prefer to use web browsing on my ps4. Now I know this browser is not the fastest one, but it does okay enough for me. Also, I don't have to get up from my couch, and if I have to type a lot, I have my little Sony wireless bluetooth keypad (The one that was designed for ps3 controller, and I still have it and it works on ps4 too :) so it's a win-win situation. Never complained about internet connection - it is simply made to make our lives easier.

  • @gems8426
    @gems8426 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Only play offline and will never be interested in playing online. the day they force everyone to be playing only online is the day they lose quite a few sales with console being included. 🥴

    • @squidracerX
      @squidracerX  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah Im not an online multiplayer guy.
      But that being said -- that time is pretty much here already -- big games like Fortnite are always online, Gamepass has me streaming newer Xbox games on my old Xbox, Switch has Streaming only games even.
      So we aren't forced to play "only online" right now (in all cases), but there is a % of big named games that requires online, a % of styles of gaming that require it (streaming and live service games), and just about everything needs patches (which you dont need to pay for online for -- but you do require internet - which is the point of this video). Plus there is a pretty good swath of games that are only available online off the digital store - digital sales are higher than physical sales on all 3 consoles now. Have been on PC for a decade.
      So like it or not -- online only is probably what next gen consoles will be 100%.
      Gamepass will just be an app on your TV, and you wont have a new physical Xbox next gen is my bet. (maybe some storage device for downloading things at most).

      @gems8426 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @squidracerX Well, then my gaming days are numbered because I seriously have no interest in playing games with others at all 🤣😂😆😭💀☠️ and I will never support games that come out unfinished and use Internet connections along with downloads to fix their problems that you clearly do pay for. Psn is not free.

    • @squidracerX
      @squidracerX  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gems8426 - If you have a PS4 you are already in that generation that releases unfinished games - If you have a PS4 - you are 100% supporting games that come out unfinished and use Internet connections along with downloads to fix their problems. Call of Duty was like 1GB on the disc and 100GB download. So you're already there!!! Gaming days not over! :) Keep playing!
      It is a crappy trend, but its here to stay, and physical is going away for good soon. Its like PC.
      But really, you are confusing two issues. This video is about digital PSN bought games running without PSN being able to connect to the internet to verify the games, and then having no internet - will the games run? (short answer, yes).
      PSN is very much free -- PSN is Sony's online store front where you purchase digital games.
      PS+ is the multiplayer component, and thats not not free. -- they are different things.
      So you have to pay for PS+ to play multiplayer games -- just dont do that :)
      But with modern games -- with no internet connection - there would be many games you cant buy, many games you cant play, and many games you cant update. That's true right now. -- Connecting to the internet to update them and buy them is free though, and you're on the internet on TH-cam so even with a slow connection you can just leave PS4 in rest mode and download what you need to update the console. I mean the console itself has updates you need to download. Has since PS3.

    Essentially PlayStation became what they marketed to fight against and ultimately went the Xbox route. I actually have two PS4 consoles in the same house. A PS4 Pro and a standard PS4. Part of the reason I have two PS4 consoles is because of storage capacity. With my digital games, it takes a lot of time and effort to download games, make sure theyre updated AND stay under a data cap from the ISP so having two consoles helps prevent that, AND I HAVE A LOT OF GAMES!!!! Also, because I have to budget storage space, the games on my PS4 Pro are all games that are Pro Enhanced while my PS4 console has games that are not benefited by the Pro at all so, I have to store them on two separate console. Both consoles as of present are maxed out with a 2TB internal SSD and a 4TB enternal HDD and yes, both are maxed out so, unless I want to keep having to delete and redownload every time I want to play a game instead of just firing up my console and going like I can my cartridge-based consoles, this is what I get. And if my internet goes out? Yeah, Im just stuck. Its stupid. Sony went the Xbox route after all. You have to be connected and you have to check in and authenticate every so long or you get this. What consumers opposed of Xbox, PlayStation inevitably followed right along

      As long as a game doesn't require an online connection, then a physical disc will work. many modern games though do not have the whole game on the disc. So you will never get the entire experience or most up to date version of a modern game without an internet connection -- these updates are free though, you dont need PS+ to download an update for a game.
      But yeah, buying physical really is pointless these days unless you like seeing the box on the shelf. Many Switch games come as cases with a download code inside the box now. No cart at all!!!!!
      I do still like physical myself, I have 3 friends borrowing games right now, and you can resell them.. Plus they tend to go on sale more than digital games often, or steeper sale.

      You may need internet if the entire game isn't on the disc. But I haven't heard of that with the older Far Cry games. Ubisoft is a very weird publisher though with a lot of "always online" services (like the Division is unplayable without internet). But that shouldn't be the case for the dozen other games?
      Is this not a game specific thing but a console thing? I am pretty sure you have to go online at least once with an xbox (at least last gens xbox), but I dont think a ps4 has to update or anything, I know people keep it offline when they want to keep older firmware. It should just say that online features arent available? But yeah I dont have a new ps4 to test out the initial set up without internet on it, sorry i cant help!
      Did you buy a used ps4 and maybe it has a messed up hard drive and needs a firmware update? That's the only thing i can think of.

    What about fifa 23?

    • @squidracerX
      @squidracerX  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No clue, Ive never played a Fifa game -- but logically any "always connected to the internet game", live service games like Fortnite, or game that isn't all on the disc -- you need the internet to play.
      So if Fifa requires updates and a constant connection (like Ubisoft's the Division), if there is no single player base game on the disc, then no it wont work.
      But if there is an unpatched single player version that you dont have to be on EA servers to launch, then yep!
      its why owning modern games on disc becomes more and more symbolic - finished games are rarely on the disc and you need day 1 patches now... you see physical boxed switch games sold that are literally just cases and inside the case is a code to download it, no cartridge ha-ha

      If you have only one ps4 then there is no reason to not get digital -- as i say in my video - my digital games are only locked when I go offline because this is my 2nd PS4, my nephew has my main one -- digital games stay unlocked on your main ps4. You just set it to "primary". I dont do that because this way i can share my games with him. I buy 1 copy for both of us to share.
