It's never 100% safe, I know a few guys that've lost sleds to the lake. I've gone through near the shore when i was a kid. Lakes are generally pretty safe, they'll have a foot or two of ice later on in the season. 1 foot of ice is good for a 7-8 ton load, and 2 feet of ice allows for over a 25 ton load according to my states safety guidelines. Always be cautious, go slow, know the ice you go on, watch for open water and steer as far away as possible from it, you'll be fine.
If just the thought of doing it gives you the chills(ha, yeah I got it) it is definitely not for you. A lot of danger involved in knowing the ice and lake, then comes the truly chilling part, being on the ice and having a heavy vehicle go across it anywhere near you, and/or having the ice break right below you and literally shift enough to make your holes unfishable, not to mention the popping and cracking and water surging in your holes....
Ice fished for years growing up - had my own hut and snowmobile. Spent 50% of the time in the hut...the other 50% sittin' on the ski-doo seat next to the hole I'd drilled - jiggin'. One year we had to walk 3 miles through 2ft of water on top of the 30" ice to get to the hut...just too much water to take the snowmobiles out. It was surreal - felt like Jesus. Ice fishing can be an irresistible compulsion. Plus - there's beer involved.
