I have lived in Oregon all my 70 years and so did my daddy and grand-daddy. My great and great great moved here long, long ago. I have visited all these horrible small towns, fished in these rivers and floated down them. Awful, awful experiences every one. Briggs is correct. Never even think of abandoning the wonders of California or New York or New Jersey to come here. Bad, bad mistake. Just stay where you are and leave us demented, unemployed methheads to take care of ourselves. Thanks.
You'll regret it. The people that stay in Oregon is only because we can't move out or are addicted to meth due to personal possession of drugs legalized. We all had SAD. I’m from southern Oregon and maybe it is too big but Cave Junction is the real #1. Great example of when the people of the community vote out law enforcement. CJ is filled with trailers and people that don’t wanna be found.

Grew up in a small town in SW Oregon. Jokingly, my dad used to reference life in a small town as knowing who's checks are good and who's wives weren't.
If they worked in corrections they used to swap wives. Dunno if they still do in that part of oregon. Most of the participants would be 50-60 now and likely divorced otherwise.
My relief at my town not making the list is tempered by the fact that I've been to all these towns and in a couple of instances said, "hmm, this might not be a bad place to live..."
Oregon native, born here and raised. After traveling to many other places, I feel Oregon is not a bad place to live. It’s beautiful. We have somewhat mild weather. Where I live( A university town), the traffic is not awful. We have all types of landscape, and the crime is not over the top. Our worst problem in my town is that Housing is not cheap. It’s not exciting, unless you love the outdoors( Which I do). I am surprised that Chiloquin didn’t make this list! Sweet Home is another small town that I’m shocked not to see on here. Fact of the matter is Oregons social services programs have been overwhelmed! Partly its own doing, partly people moving here and paying outlandish prices for land and homes, raise property values and thus taxes, and partly the large cities to our east who for decades have given their homeless one way tickets west coast cities telling them we can help them get back on their feet better then they can. Oregon is a blue state but blue states still contribute more to the federal government than they take! Three of the five most “dependent” states are deep red states!

I was born and raised in Southern Oregon. My experience has been that there are a lot of really good people, and just a few creeps. {I just hope that not too many people think that I should fall into that creep list. Hmmm} Just like anywhere else a lot just depends on what you like or don't like. Some things are really important to some but not important to others. I'm now 63 and can honestly say that most of the kids that I went to school with back then I have a deep love in my heart for. That's one of the great things about growing up in a small rural town.

My sister told about some friends in Fall City whose pickup wouldn't start one morning. Someone had stolen the battery during the night. About a week after replacing the battery, theywoke to find their old battery and an envelope with a note apologizing for stealing their battery. Included were a pair of tickets for a football game at Oregon State University in Corvallis against University of Oregon, offered to compensate for the inconvenience. They had a nice time at the game, but returned to a totally empty unfurnished house.

I’m very familiar with Maupin. While it is a bit isolated, the idea that it’s a bad place to live isn’t really accurate. It’s a cute small town with a lot of good community spirit, and increasingly good infrastructure. I like Briggs but he must not have been to Maupin in recent years

Was born and raised in falls city oregon. A majority of my life I have gone through that place and can assure you that everyone knows everyone and it is because we know who everyone is that if you lived there for awhile, you know who is capable of getting what for you. From an outsider's perspective, Falls city oregon is a place filled with undesirables. For me, I am confident enough to walk through my home town alone even as a 6 year old, knowing the people there were people who knew my parents and grandparents, and respected our space and in turn we respected others because of it. Everybody looks out for everybody for the most part, but like the video says, there is the 10% who do cause problems. It is not a town to cause problems in. Everybody wants to be left alone to do what they want to do. The rule of law is to mind your own business and everyone is happy. Now im not saying its a town for everyone, and its not the town it used to be anymore. I am still confident enough to walk around falls city on my own, but for others? Just be smart about who you interact with and make friends with. If you aren't someone who is used to paying attention to people and being mindful about them, then it isn't a place for you to be in. If you are familiar with that kind of lifestyle then moving into the town shouldn't be an issue for you.
True..I grew up in falls City Dallas and pedee. It's not dangerous. Everyone knows each other. Yes it has its problems. There is drugs. Falls City is spot on. It's sketchy. There's some things going on in that community that I'm not even going to mention here. As far as the creek goes, I have fly fished it a couple times. I always have wierdos that stare at me just waiting for me to say something. Last summer I had 3 knuckle draggers follow me as I was heading back to my truck. They were absolutely going to jump me. They were moving up closing the distance. It was on. As soon as I got to my truck I pulled my sidearm out of my fly vest. At that moment they asked me where I was from and where is my fish. Super odd. I answered this creek is catch & release for trout. They glanced at my sidearm and went back down the trail from where we walked out. I left. It's a hell hole with a nice little creek running through it.
Ya I know someone that lives out there. I've been in the Salem area most of my life & I've always heard, "No cops in Falls City!" Made sure I packed when I went to the Valley of the Giants! No problems but did see some sketchy people for sure!
I grew up about 30 minutes from FC. There's a reputation of some real creepy stuff that has gone on there for years. And I wouldn't go through there without my sidearm. Above town there's mushroom (legal and illegal) harvesting that brings in some bad actors.
As a former cop I would love to dig into these "crime statistics" something does not seem right, I have been to many of these tiny towns on this list and they were always the kind of place you could leave your doors unlocked, granted if you smarted off to someone a rancher or logger may beat you within an inch of your life. I suspect these terrible crime stats are simply due to their extreme tiny populations, you get five property crimes in six months in a town of a 150 and all of a sudden your crime stats look awful when it may not even be locals as was pointed out likely with Maupin. I remember a small town a hour from me as a kid one year statistically was near being the countries murder capital just that one year because of its tiny population, you get three murders in a small town and your stats look crazy.
Go to Cave Junction. Four murders this past month, constant car, property thefts and home burglaries. Sheriff does not respond. Referring homicides to the state police. "We don't have the resources" (except for coffee & donuts)

You’re wrong about Maupin. A few great restaurants, good people, lots of great things to do along the river and the rainbow tavern is super legit place to hang!
Burns needs to be on this list as well. Lived there for 12 years dealing with crappy people, tweakers, perverts, thieves and some of the most extreme weather conditions ever. Finally was able to leave but for most people, Burns is a tarpit that traps you there.

The Deschutes is a serious river. I would advise getting drunk after the raft trip unless you want to end up at the bottom of it. Another great video, props from Portlandia.
Just did a 4 day rafting trip there last week ending in Maupin, but my group was all Mormons so I was sober except for one night a snuck a few shots in. That class 4 rapid was pretty scary!

I lived about 7 miles outside of downtown Portland. Mostly trees, well spaced houses, about 1 1/2miles from a couple gorgeous river parks. Quiet neighborhoods. So much privacy. Can barely see the house next door thru all the trees. No real reason to ever go downtown Portland. Similar situation now in Eugene area. I live about 5 miles out. I'm only 3 miles from that last stop bait shop/beer stop before u hit Fall Creek. One thing to love about Eugene is the live music scene...free music 6-7 nights a week, and some amazing musicians. I've been all over the continent, and, to my mind, this is some of the best living anywhere. Love living between town and the woods n rivers. Need I say it...best of both worlds.
@@staceykersting705 Eugene is Fresno with green haired boomers instead of rednecks. There is a fly infestation in Eugene in the summer. There is no music scene in Eugene, there are some of those bores that play cover tunes at the Saturday Market and coffee shops. The best music is when punk bands from CA play Whirled Pies or local garage bands play at that place in Whitaker. Eugene is lousy.
@@markpreston6930 U haven't been to Mac's, apparently. All summer, we dance on the lawn there. I love the Blues scene, and, yes, the Steely Dan, Tower of Power, Santana covers, too. It's more than just a cover when the Blues Jam kicks into gear on Tuesday nights. Love the art galleries, the Latin bands, all the free music in the parks. I never witnessed or heard about any fly infestation. Depends how often u take out the trash, I guess. I've never wanted to return to Toronto, New York City or Boston. Upsate NY DOES have some great camping areas, tho.

Yeah this seems pretty accurate. From a tiny Oregon town too. Played football against Prospect and went to WOU in Monmouth so, spent some time in Falls City. Wouldn’t wanna live in any of these places. But so far Portland and Detroit are the only places where someone has tried to rob me. So, they could be worse.
I knew someone in Falls City who buried a stolen car in his back yard. He was a tow truck driver. Falls City has no city police. Crime is the number one industry in Falls City.

I grew up in Malhuer County. The only reason to live in Jordan Valley is if you are somehow involved with ranching, other than that I got nothing...and neither does Jordan Valley.
Born and raised here in oregon. Been to each of these areas due to water well drilling and a fellow who could get water from a stone. Gave me good laughs brought up ol memories and all these places for all they are worth visit before you decide. They are all beautiful in their own right. Thanks for the memories.
I'm amazed that Powers wasn't on this list. Powers, Oregon made it on the international news one time. My dad was all the way in Kansas City and still had to hear about what was going on in Powers on the news. It is a beautiful area though. Some of the best river spots in all of Coos County are out towards Powers and there are some amazing hiking trails if you can find them.

I almost drove to Falls City once, but decided to not to. I drove through Aumsville and their sign says "A great place to live" and "Come back soon". Compared to Portland and Salem, most likely.
I came to Redmond, Oregon from India for flight training. I love Oregon specially snow capped mountains, waterfalls etc. Mt Hood is my favorite, Not a big fan of Portland. Unfortunately I had to move to Florida for a different school and now am badly missing Oregon, its weather, nature.
Mitchell, Oregon is the most sinister small town that I have ever visited, and I have lived in Oregon for 58 years. It started out as a mining town. It is in a small canyon in the high desert of Central Oregon near the Painted Hills. It is the perfect setting for a horror movie.
A couple years ago, I was looking for a rest area but my Garmin GPS led me astray and I ended up in Mitchel. I stopped and talked with a tweeker who was working on an old pickup truck. He pointed to what he called a campground. It was about 4 RV spots with an old playground. Children were milling around, and they looked like black-eyed children from a horror movie. They live in broken-down trailer houses and shacks. I'm sure they have their own law there. I got out of there pronto.
at 6:14, the only thing I would add to the description of Spray is "you can't even say that it's in the sticks because that would imply they have trees."
At 30 years old, I moved to Oregon from west Michigan in 1987. As a fly fisherman I immediately found Maupin. In the 37 years I've lived in Oregon, I've had a chance to travel almost the entire state, seeing many small towns. To this day, my favorite place in Oregon is Maupin. I would like nothing more than to spend the rest of my days in that sleepy little town where everyone is on a first name basis.
I’m near Falls City, it’s scary that the crime rate is so high, bc it is known for it’s lack of police presence (there is no local force, only Polk County Sheriff, who rarely make it out there for patrol)
I lived in fall city….I swear there were people who lived there who’d never been out of that town. The problem with small towns is that there’s not much to do in your teens, so they’re most likely going to get in trouble, get hooked on drugs, get in fights ect.
I grew up near Prospect Oregon. It IS pretty secluded and there isn't much there. It IS really pretty there. That's where we would go if we wanted to play in the snow when I was a kid. 25 miles made a huge difference on how much snow was on the ground. There isn't much there except a lot of nature.

I live in Salem, Oregon and a few years ago I decided to take little trip to Falls City to check out the falls. Not much to see but I was followed out of town by four men in an old car. They followed for about three miles and then suddenly turned around and headed back towards town. I hadn’t done anything wrong but if the rumors are true, Falls City is the kind of place where if they have a problem with someone, that person just might disappear without the authorities caring all that much.
Lived in Monmouth for 4 years. Spent years heading up through falls city to go into the mountains. We never had an issue. I even rode along in a truck that said cowgirl up on it. (Buddy borrowed his girlfriends truck)
I was actually in Falls City last weekend. And I had a wonderful time. Theres some rapids/waterfalls right in town called Falls City Falls. Lots of fun drinking by the water and watching people jump in the water from the cliffs. Also theres a bar and bakery. Didn't seem so shitty.
I live in maupin!!!!!love it here.. and the ambulance makes it in 30 minutes…. This town is not as bad as you make it out to be.. and the crime rate is not that high…wrong.. most of the people survive on the school, going to the Dallas, or ranching

I have spent 20 years on a river in Oregon where the nearest gas station was about 90 minutes away. It’s horrible. So many river rats drinking as they float down the river. World class fishing. Street dances. And bootleggers. No real crime since everyone has a cpl guns in the truck. Absolutely disgusting. Any east coast kids or Seatlelites should not come. Every one eats meat!!!!
All of these places have issues, but are still better than living in the cess pools of portland and eugene. BTW, if you don't live in one of those "cess pools", then every good hospital is at least a one hour drive away.

I was planning on moving back there though in a couple of years because all of my friends and family are there. I am a liberal and I am in favor of legalizing all drugs so people who are addicted can get medical help without being thrown in jail (I used to work in mental health and that’s a real problem, believe me), but the rest of it sounds absolutely horrible. That is so sad. Portland used to be the most beautiful city in the country in my opinion. The whole country is going to hell in a handbasket. Outside Portlandistan, Eugene and Salem, it is a gorgeous state and we would never move but unfortunately those cities are run by rudderless Democrats without a clue, driving them into the ground with onerous taxes and misguided political objectives. I lived in Eastern Oregon ( Hermiston) along the mighty Columbia River. I lived there for 28 years and left, yep left due to high taxation and Portland politics. One learns fast what the " Valley" i.e. Portland, Salem area wants the rest of the state gets stuck with. Moved to Montana 20 years ago and never regretted it.

Raised decades ago in Boring, Oregon settled by pioneer and Union soldier William Harrison Boring. Its sister cities are Dull, Scotland and Bland, New South Wales, Australia. T'was great countryside to grow up in.
Got stuck in Coos Bay for 4 days waiting for a rear wheel bearing for my Dodge Colt. This was back around 1982. Spent my time watching the waves at the beach and wandering around an antique mall. Had a couple local yokels decide to give me a ration at breakfast one morning, they had seen me wandering around town. Thankfully Randy, a Coos Bay cop came by and chased them away. I was never so glad to get out of a town in my life. Drove through in 2012, the dumpy hotel I stayed in was gone and a strip mall was there.
I grew up most of my childhood in rural Oregon. Look, they are basically left behind and completely ignored by the state legislature. Oregon does not give a crap about anything outside of the Portland metro area. This is why most of Eastern Oregon wants to join Idaho. They don't love Idaho - Oregon just treats %70 of its own state like a satrapy. No jobs, no infrastructure, no assistance no development. These places suck by negligence and that negligence is by design. Eastern Oregon is full of people who are sick of erudite hipsters deciding that they aren't important.
Born & raised in Oregon. I wondered if you were going to reference my hometown. First time viewer. Interesting format. “Worst” is such a non-specific term imho so I appreciate you consistently referencing statistics. My two constructive pieces of advice is to actually visit these places you’re characterising as you’ll get the original footage you bemoaned lacking and probably learn something deeper and interesting to share with your viewers perhaps. The other advice is jettison the condescending tone when you pronounce the names of some of these communities and describing some. Imagine, for a moment, it’s _your_ home town and maybe be slightly more objective in tone. The video production & writing, pacing are all good I thought.
I live about an hour from Prospect. Apparently it used to be a really nice small town back in the 1960's when my grandmother lived there. Not so much anymore.

Hilarious video (from a rural Oregonian)! A lot of small town people think rural areas are so much safer, but the stats show they often aren't! I was surprised to not see more of the really rural towns in SE Oregon (like fields) they're just so far from anything, like several hours from a grocery store even... Also just want to mention prairie dogs are not found in oregon. We do have ground squirrels, which would make an even more terrible meal than a prairie dog!
I worked in Chiloquin off and on since the 1970's. Not the best place to be after dark or alone and unarmed. The rural area is full of all sorts of retired law enforcement. Those people were my customers for residential contracting. Them and the ranchers. Good people.
Spray Oregon isn’t anything to get excited about, but it isn’t terrible. It’s just a very remote small town. Not the snake pit being described. Sometimes Briggs hit it, and sometimes not so much!
What's interesting is that you don't see anything on here about how bad Spray is during the time the several hundred thousand people flock to this area during the summer months to screw up a tranquil place for the locals who live there to get away from the drama. Listing Spray as a crappy town in my opinion is from someone looking from the outside in. These smaller towns are dependent on those who live there to run their local government, fire dept, ambulance, search and rescue (yes there are dumb asses going to use the river who don't live any where near Spray. They rely on crappy people in a crappy town to come save you).....If you truly knew the insides of these small towns where people are trying to make them livable, I doubt Spray, Oregon would be on your list. Sadly, a lot of these small towns are victims to poverty because the intentional killing of the timber industry, the foot of big government on the throats of people trying their hardest to make a living in an over regulated State. The sad part is that law enforcement has been made to be the bad guys in small towns when the State Legislature and Governor have stripped them the ability to do their job....decriminalization of drugs leads to the thefts and a culture of do nothing and sit around and smoke dope, shoot up and nothing can be done about it. The Courts have taken on a system of rehabilitation over accountability. There are a lot of good people who live in this area and Spray is what it is because people there don't want it like Portland, Bend, Hermiston, Eugene...............
Maupin is actually a fun place in the summer. The population quadruples in people just there for rafting. Lots of people camping, drinking, and having fun.

Having grown up in rural Oregon I can say that property crime= bored teens getting drunk and deciding to to vandalize something because there is literally nothing else to do
Falls city has some of the best downhill mountain biking Also you said "if you really like the out doors" rule#1 of Oregon-you must like the out doors.
I lived in a small area of central Oregon called Beaver Marsh.. was like 7 miles from the closet "town" .. 30miles from the school in Gilchrist.. was smack in between Bend and Klamath falls..

A positive about Maupin: The Rose City Astronomers (from Portland) have regular star parties at the Maupin airstrip. It is a wonderful dark sky location.
I burst out laughing when you said Prospect was #1. I’ve been through there many times as part of my volcanic mapping projects for four years, based out of Butte Falls and Willow Lake County Park just a bit to the south! Decent rock outcrops, but not really much of a town, sadly.
I live in Klamath Falls and I've been through the places you mentioned lots of times and I think it's beautiful, I've even thought about moving to Shady Cove
I spent every summer & Christmas in Prospect both set's of grandparents lived there & I have family in Butte falls.. As a kid the town was better & we never ran out of things to do in town or on the farm.. I loved it..
Got to say I've stopped in Maupin and found it to be a fun place, same with Spray there's some nice people there. Both of them also have beautiful Oregon desert scenery.
It is a nice town. Was just there last week. It is 100% dependent on seasonal tourist traffic for rafting and fishing though, and not on the way to any other place which would make it a really though place to earn a living.
I can't believe that Madras isn't on that list. I lived there two years and could never find a decent job or place to live. I finally moved to Salem and went into law enforcement after college.
I grew up in Culver and left as soon as I could. Even visiting my family now I can see that there's been a little bit of positive growth, but nowhere near enough for what residents need to survive 😥

You really should check out Lebanon, OR if you're looking for a 'not so great' place to live. It's growing, yes, but it's also loaded with drinkers, bikers, property crime, meth, people making the most of the legal pot movement and very little culture, art or fun. If you want to start a business? Stick with tried and true vices: Alcohol, drugs, food and you MIGHT succeed. Maybe.
Try 50 years! Granted you may be a youngster (under 50) but it's been a thing. Lot's of my customers were retired Californians, bringing there nice retirement checks up to Oregon to spend. Of course that raised housing costs and changed the politics. The the kids and grandkids follow Mom and Dad up and most of them were worthless.
Falls city is actually a really beautiful town. The falls which is where we get the name from is in the middle of town and is really beautiful. The Bread Board is a bakery which has a huge wood fire oven, where they make bread and deserts and pizza which is amazing. Give it a chance
Agreed. I dont live in Falls City so I can't speak to day to day life there. I'm in Independence which isn't far though. But The Bread Board is becoming a destination food spot. People from Salem will drive there for pizza, beer, and the candied bacon. (Amazing)
Klamath Falls should've made the list, I was born and raised here and it just sucks to high heaven! It used to be nice when I was a kid but now it's just awful, the drivers shouldn't have a license, the neighbors are rude and disrespectful, the crime is the worst I've seen, because it's so close to California and Crater Lake the traffic is a nightmare, in my opinion if a country declared nuclear war on us, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if Klamath was on the list, I'd go to the mountains and watch the mushroom cloud, it's that bad here 😢
I used to live in Klamath Falls in the 1970’s and went to college there. It was a pretty good place at that time. I do remember all the Californians moving into the area. It makes me so sad to hear how awful it has become. I have a sister who lives there now, and she doesn’t like it either.
I went to OIT, too. Class of '76. Can't say I was fond of the place. Every Friday night, the commons would shut down and we'd have to go into town to get dinner. About the only time you went into town because the locals hated us students. All the profs drank at the Red Garter after classes. What a bad time on my life and K-Falls made it dreary. Haven't been back since.
I agree with the comments regarding Fall City. I worked as a Cop for 7 Years in Dallas Oregon near-by. Dueling banjos for sure. Friday nights it was Squeal like a Pig.
I am a little late getting in this one, but I would take 10 Prospect Oregon rather than live in Chiloquin. Maybe Briggs was already there and decided to save what hair he has left so he didn't mention it? I agree that Cave Junction is just as bad as it gets, and equals Chiloquin for Suckage. I have been to prospect many times and I think it is a great little town as is Butte Falls, just down the Fish Lake highway. Believe me, if you haven't been to Chiloquin or Cave Junction don't rate any small town bad.
Just visited Maupin Oregon last week for a rafting trip. It’s amazing how isolated that town is. Rafting is the ONLY reason someone would ever go there, since it isn’t on the way to any other place.
Fishing, whitewater rafting, kayaking. Maupin gets a bad rap because it's isolated and outsiders ome in and commit stupid crimes. like DUI, drunken assault on officers etc.
I spent a lot of my high school weekends camping there with my friends - floating through boxcar, fishing, sitting around a camp fire. We really liked it.
Places like Spray remind me of Seligman Arizona, if it exists, it's gets stolen, guaranteed. It's like a competition on how much each neighbor can steal the most from each other.

I have lived in Oregon all my 70 years and so did my daddy and grand-daddy. My great and great great moved here long, long ago. I have visited all these horrible small towns, fished in these rivers and floated down them. Awful, awful experiences every one. Briggs is correct. Never even think of abandoning the wonders of California or New York or New Jersey to come here. Bad, bad mistake. Oregon native, born here and raised. After traveling to many other places, I feel Oregon is not a bad place to live. It’s beautiful. We have somewhat mild weather. Where I live( A university town), the traffic is not awful. We have all types of landscape, and the crime is not over the top. Our worst problem in my town is that Housing is not cheap. It’s not exciting, unless you love the outdoors( Which I do).
I am surprised that Chiloquin didn’t make this list! Sweet Home is another small town that I’m shocked not to see on here.

Fact of the matter is Oregons social services programs have been overwhelmed! Partly its own doing, partly people moving here and paying outlandish prices for land and homes, raise property values and thus taxes, and partly the large cities to our east who for decades have given their homeless one way tickets west coast cities telling them we can help them get back on their feet better then they can.
Oregon is a blue state but blue states still contribute more to the federal government than they take!

I was born and raised in Southern Oregon. My experience has been that there are a lot of really good people, and just a few creeps. {I just hope that not too many people think that I should fall into that creep list. Hmmm} Just like anywhere else a lot just depends on what you like or don't like. Some things are really important to some but not important to others. I'm now 63 and can honestly say that most of the kids that I went to school with back then I have a deep love in my heart for. That's one of the great things about growing up in a small rural town.

My sister told about some friends in Fall City whose pickup wouldn't start one morning. Someone had stolen the battery during the night. About a week after replacing the battery, theywoke to find their old battery and an envelope with a note apologizing for stealing their battery. Included were a pair of tickets for a football game at Oregon State University in Corvallis against University of Oregon, offered to compensate for the inconvenience. They had a nice time at the game, but returned to a totally empty unfurnished house.

I’m very familiar with Maupin. While it is a bit isolated, the idea that it’s a bad place to live isn’t really accurate. It’s a cute small town with a lot of good community spirit, and increasingly good infrastructure. I like Briggs but he must not have been to Maupin in recent years

Was born and raised in falls city oregon. A majority of my life I have gone through that place and can assure you that everyone knows everyone and it is because we know who everyone is that if you lived there for awhile, you know who is capable of getting what for you. From an outsider's perspective, Falls city oregon is a place filled with undesirables. For me, I am confident enough to walk through my home town alone even as a 6 year old, knowing the people there were people who knew my parents and grandparents, and respected our space and in turn we respected others because of it. Everybody looks out for everybody for the most part, but like the video says, there is the 10% who do cause problems. It is not a town to cause problems in. Everybody wants to be left alone to do what they want to do. The rule of law is to mind your own business and everyone is happy.
Now im not saying its a town for everyone, and its not the town it used to be anymore. I am still confident enough to walk around falls city on my own, but for others? Just be smart about who you interact with and make friends with. If you aren't someone who is used to paying attention to people and being mindful about them, then it isn't a place for you to be in. If you are familiar with that kind of lifestyle then moving into the town shouldn't be an issue for you.
True..I grew up in falls City Dallas and pedee. It's not dangerous. Everyone knows each other. Yes it has its problems. There is drugs. But every dang town has the same problems..it's just falls City is so small that people think that everyone their is on them. Which just ain't true

Falls City is spot on. It's sketchy. There's some things going on in that community that I'm not even going to mention here.
As far as the creek goes, I have fly fished it a couple times. I always have wierdos that stare at me just waiting for me to say something.
Last summer I had 3 knuckle draggers follow me as I was heading back to my truck. They were absolutely going to jump me. They were moving up closing the distance. It was on.
As soon as I got to my truck I pulled my sidearm out of my fly vest.
At that moment they asked me where I was from and where is my fish. Super odd.
I answered this creek is catch & release for trout.
They glanced at my sidearm and went back down the trail from where we walked out.
I left.
It's a hell hole with a nice little creek running through it.
Ya I know someone that lives out there.

I grew up about 30 minutes from FC. There's a reputation of some real creepy stuff that has gone on there for years. And I wouldn't go through there without my sidearm.

As a former cop I would love to dig into these "crime statistics" something does not seem right, I have been to many of these tiny towns on this list and they were always the kind of place you could leave your doors unlocked, granted if you smarted off to someone a rancher or logger may beat you within an inch of your life. I suspect these terrible crime stats are simply due to their extreme tiny populations, you get five property crimes in six months in a town of a 150 and all of a sudden your crime stats look awful when it may not even be locals as was pointed out likely with Maupin. I remember a small town a hour from me as a kid one year statistically was near being the countries murder capital just that one year because of its tiny population, you get three murders in a small town and your stats look crazy.
Go to Cave Junction. Four murders this past month, constant car, property thefts and home burglaries. Sheriff does not respond. Referring homicides to the state police. "We don't have the resources" (except for coffee & donuts)

Burns needs to be on this list as well. Lived there for 12 years dealing with crappy people, tweakers, perverts, thieves and some of the most extreme weather conditions ever. Finally was able to leave but for most people, Burns is a tarpit that traps you there.

Just did a 4 day rafting trip there last week ending in Maupin, but my group was all Mormons so I was sober except for one night a snuck a few shots in. That class 4 rapid was pretty scary!

Idk anything about Cresent City, other than it's California and also, not a fan🤣 it really depends on what you are looking for. Seeing that you lived in SF and Vegas, these 2 towns might be too boring for you. Research them. Good luck.

I lived about 7 miles outside of downtown Portland. Mostly trees, well spaced houses, about 1 1/2miles from a couple gorgeous river parks. Quiet neighborhoods. So much privacy. Can barely see the house next door thru all the trees. No real reason to ever go downtown Portland. Similar situation now in Eugene area. I live about 5 miles out. I'm only 3 miles from that last stop bait shop/beer stop before u hit Fall Creek. One thing to love about Eugene is the live music scene...free music 6-7 nights a week, and some amazing musicians. I've been all over the continent, and, to my mind, this is some of the best living anywhere. Love living between town and the woods n rivers. Need I say it...best of both worlds.
@@staceykersting705 Eugene is Fresno with green haired boomers instead of rednecks. There is a fly infestation in Eugene in the summer. There is no music scene in Eugene, there are some of those bores that play cover tunes at the Saturday Market and coffee shops. The best music is when punk bands from CA play Whirled Pies or local garage bands play at that place in Whitaker. Eugene is lousy.
@@markpreston6930 U haven't been to Mac's, apparently. All summer, we dance on the lawn there. I love the Blues scene, and, yes, the Steely Dan, Tower of Power, Santana covers, too. It's more than just a cover when the Blues Jam kicks into gear on Tuesday nights. Love the art galleries, the Latin bands, all the free music in the parks. I never witnessed or heard about any fly infestation. Depends how often u take out the trash, I guess. I've never wanted to return to Toronto, New York City or Boston. Upsate NY DOES have some great camping areas, tho.
I hope you are pushing the property values down in Prospect because I would love to buy something there....beautiful area....

Yeah this seems pretty accurate. From a tiny Oregon town too. Played football against Prospect and went to WOU in Monmouth so, spent some time in Falls City. Wouldn’t wanna live in any of these places. But so far Portland and Detroit are the only places where someone has tried to rob me. So, they could be worse.

I grew up in Malhuer County. The only reason to live in Jordan Valley is if you are somehow involved with ranching, other than that I got nothing...and neither does Jordan Valley.
Born and raised here in oregon. Been to each of these areas due to water well drilling and a fellow who could get water from a stone. Gave me good laughs brought up ol memories and all these places for all they are worth visit before you decide. They are all beautiful in their own right. Thanks for the memories.
I'm amazed that Powers wasn't on this list. Powers, Oregon made it on the international news one time. My dad was all the way in Kansas City and still had to hear about what was going on in Powers on the news. It is a beautiful area though. Some of the best river spots in all of Coos County are out towards Powers and there are some amazing hiking trails if you can find them.

I almost drove to Falls City once, but decided to not to. I drove through Aumsville and their sign says "A great place to live" and "Come back soon". Compared to Portland and Salem, most likely.
I came to Redmond, Oregon from India for flight training. I love Oregon specially snow capped mountains, waterfalls etc. Mt Hood is my favorite, Not a big fan of Portland. Unfortunately I had to move to Florida for a different school and now am badly missing Oregon, its weather, nature.
There’s a good bakery in Falls City that makes giant cinnamon rolls. I only know because they have a booth at the Corvallis Saturday market.

Years ago Jordan Valley was a point of destination for me. One of the best in home Basque restaurants in the country, but again, that was in the 90’s.
Now there aren't any restaurants in that town anymore. Pretty sad since that town made for a really good rest stop along US-95.
Mitchell, Oregon is the most sinister small town that I have ever visited, and I have lived in Oregon for 58 years. It started out as a mining town. It is in a small canyon in the high desert of Central Oregon near the Painted Hills. It is the perfect setting for a horror movie.

A couple years ago, I was looking for a rest area but my Garmin GPS led me astray and I ended up in Mitchel. I stopped and talked with a tweeker who was working on an old pickup truck. He pointed to what he called a campground. It was about 4 RV spots with an old playground. Children were milling around, and they looked like black-eyed children from a horror movie. They live in broken-down trailer houses and shacks. I'm sure they have their own law there. I got out of there pronto.

I used to live in Fall city. It's not that bad at all. the town is just plain and simple, but the outskirts are quite gorgeous!

At 30 years old, I moved to Oregon from west Michigan in 1987.
As a fly fisherman I immediately found Maupin.
In the 37 years I've lived in Oregon, I've had a chance to travel almost the entire state, seeing many small towns. To this day, my favorite place in Oregon is Maupin. I would like nothing more than to spend the rest of my days in that sleepy little town where everyone is on a first name basis.
I’m near Falls City, it’s scary that the crime rate is so high, bc it is known for it’s lack of police presence (there is no local force, only Polk County Sheriff, who rarely make it out there for patrol)

I lived in fall city….I swear there were people who lived there who’d never been out of that town. The problem with small towns is that there’s not much to do in your teens, so they’re most likely going to get in trouble, get hooked on drugs, get in fights ect.

I grew up near Prospect Oregon. It IS pretty secluded and there isn't much there. It IS really pretty there. That's where we would go if we wanted to play in the snow when I was a kid. 25 miles made a huge difference on how much snow was on the ground. There isn't much there except a lot of nature.

I live in Salem, Oregon and a few years ago I decided to take little trip to Falls City to check out the falls. Not much to see but I was followed out of town by four men in an old car. They followed for about three miles and then suddenly turned around and headed back towards town. I hadn’t done anything wrong but if the rumors are true, Falls City is the kind of place where if they have a problem with someone, that person just might disappear without the authorities caring all that much.
Lived in Monmouth for 4 years. Spent years heading up through falls city to go into the mountains. We never had an issue. I even rode along in a truck that said cowgirl up on it. (Buddy borrowed his girlfriends truck)

I was actually in Falls City last weekend. And I had a wonderful time. Theres some rapids/waterfalls right in town called Falls City Falls. Lots of fun drinking by the water and watching people jump in the water from the cliffs. Also theres a bar and bakery. Didn't seem so shitty.

I have spent 20 years on a river in Oregon where the nearest gas station was about 90 minutes away. It’s horrible. So many river rats drinking as they float down the river. World class fishing. Street dances. And bootleggers. No real crime since everyone has a cpl guns in the truck.

All of these places have issues, but are still better than living in the cess pools of portland and eugene. BTW, if you don't live in one of those "cess pools", then every good hospital is at least a one hour drive away.

I was planning on moving back there though in a couple of years because all of my friends and family are there. I lived in Eastern Oregon ( Hermiston) along the mighty Columbia River. I lived there for 28 years and left, yep left due to high taxation and Portland politics. One learns fast what the " Valley" i.e. Portland, Salem area wants the rest of the state gets stuck with. Moved to Montana 20 years ago and never regretted it.

Raised decades ago in Boring, Oregon settled by pioneer and Union soldier William Harrison Boring. Its sister cities are Dull, Scotland and Bland, New South Wales, Australia. T'was great countryside to grow up in.

Got stuck in Coos Bay for 4 days waiting for a rear wheel bearing for my Dodge Colt. This was back around 1982. Spent my time watching the waves at the beach and wandering around an antique mall. Had a couple local yokels decide to give me a ration at breakfast one morning, they had seen me wandering around town. Thankfully Randy, a Coos Bay cop came by and chased them away. I was never so glad to get out of a town in my life. Drove through in 2012, the dumpy hotel I stayed in was gone and a strip mall was there.
I grew up most of my childhood in rural Oregon. Look, they are basically left behind and completely ignored by the state legislature. Oregon does not give a crap about anything outside of the Portland metro area. This is why most of Eastern Oregon wants to join Idaho. They don't love Idaho - Oregon just treats %70 of its own state like a satrapy. No jobs, no infrastructure, no assistance no development. These places suck by negligence and that negligence is by design. Eastern Oregon is full of people who are sick of erudite hipsters deciding that they aren't important.

First time viewer. Interesting format. “Worst” is such a non-specific term imho so I appreciate you consistently referencing statistics.
My two constructive pieces of advice is to actually visit these places you’re characterising as you’ll get the original footage you bemoaned lacking and probably learn something deeper and interesting to share with your viewers perhaps. The other advice is jettison the condescending tone when you pronounce the names of some of these communities and describing some. Imagine, for a moment, it’s _your_ home town and maybe be slightly more objective in tone.
The video production & writing, pacing are all good I thought.

Hilarious video (from a rural Oregonian)! A lot of small town people think rural areas are so much safer, but the stats show they often aren't! I was surprised to not see more of the really rural towns in SE Oregon (like fields) they're just so far from anything, like several hours from a grocery store even... Also just want to mention prairie dogs are not found in oregon. We do have ground squirrels, which would make an even more terrible meal than a prairie dog!

I worked in Chiloquin off and on since the 1970's. Not the best place to be after dark or alone and unarmed. The rural area is full of all sorts of retired law enforcement. Those people were my customers for residential contracting. Them and the ranchers. Good people.
This is the worst? What about multnomah county? Crime, Homelessness, drug abuse, garbage and tents in the neighborhood parks.
Spray Oregon isn’t anything to get excited about, but it isn’t terrible. It’s just a very remote small town. Not the snake pit being described. Sometimes Briggs hit it, and sometimes not so much!
What's interesting is that you don't see anything on here about how bad Spray is during the time the several hundred thousand people flock to this area during the summer months to screw up a tranquil place for the locals who live there to get away from the drama. Listing Spray as a crappy town in my opinion is from someone looking from the outside in. These smaller towns are dependent on those who live there to run their local government, fire dept, ambulance, search and rescue (yes there are dumb asses going to use the river who don't live any where near Spray. They rely on crappy people in a crappy town to come save you).....If you truly knew the insides of these small towns where people are trying to make them livable, I doubt Spray, Oregon would be on your list. Sadly, a lot of these small towns are victims to poverty because the intentional killing of the timber industry, the foot of big government on the throats of people trying their hardest to make a living in an over regulated State. The sad part is that law enforcement has been made to be the bad guys in small towns when the State Legislature and Governor have stripped them the ability to do their job....decriminalization of drugs leads to the thefts and a culture of do nothing and sit around and smoke dope, shoot up and nothing can be done about it. The Courts have taken on a system of rehabilitation over accountability. There are a lot of good people who live in this area and Spray is what it is because people there don't want it like Portland, Bend, Hermiston, Eugene...............
Maupin is actually a fun place in the summer. The population quadruples in people just there for rafting. Lots of people camping, drinking, and having fun.
I much prefer coastal Oregon than rural Oregon.

I lived in a small area of central Oregon called Beaver Marsh.. was like 7 miles from the closet "town" .. 30miles from the school in Gilchrist.. was smack in between Bend and Klamath falls..
Been there. It's north of that strangely straight highway (138) heading west through the Cascades. Nice camping around there but it can get cold.
Used to take the Beaver Marsh cutoff to take 31 out to Paisley, sneaking the back way into Fernley, NV.

A positive about Maupin: The Rose City Astronomers (from Portland) have regular star parties at the Maupin airstrip. It is a wonderful dark sky location.
I burst out laughing when you said Prospect was #1. I’ve been through there many times as part of my volcanic mapping projects for four years, based out of Butte Falls and Willow Lake County Park just a bit to the south! Decent rock outcrops, but not really much of a town, sadly.
I live in Klamath Falls and I've been through the places you mentioned lots of times and I think it's beautiful, I've even thought about moving to Shady Cove
I spent every summer & Christmas in Prospect both set's of grandparents lived there & I have family in Butte falls.. As a kid the town was better & we never ran out of things to do in town or on the farm.. I loved it..
Got to say I've stopped in Maupin and found it to be a fun place, same with Spray there's some nice people there. Both of them also have beautiful Oregon desert scenery.
It is a nice town. Was just there last week. It is 100% dependent on seasonal tourist traffic for rafting and fishing though, and not on the way to any other place which would make it a really though place to earn a living.

I can't believe that Madras isn't on that list. I lived there two years and could never find a decent job or place to live. I finally moved to Salem and went into law enforcement after college.
I grew up in Culver and left as soon as I could. Even visiting my family now I can see that there's been a little bit of positive growth, but nowhere near enough for what residents need to survive 😥

Lived in madras also. My mom was one of the first waitresses at Jerry's restaurant. Sold my horse to the muddy creek ranch, we moved to montana.

You really should check out Lebanon, OR if you're looking for a 'not so great' place to live. It's growing, yes, but it's also loaded with drinkers, bikers, property crime, meth, people making the most of the legal pot movement and very little culture, art or fun. If you want to start a business? Stick with tried and true vices: Alcohol, drugs, food and you MIGHT succeed. Maybe.

Try 50 years! Granted you may be a youngster (under 50) but it's been a thing. Lot's of my customers were retired Californians, bringing there nice retirement checks up to Oregon to spend. Of course that raised housing costs and changed the politics. The the kids and grandkids follow Mom and Dad up and most of them were worthless.
Falls city is actually a really beautiful town. The falls which is where we get the name from is in the middle of town and is really beautiful. The Bread Board is a bakery which has a huge wood fire oven, where they make bread and deserts and pizza which is amazing. Give it a chance
Agreed. I dont live in Falls City so I can't speak to day to day life there. I'm in Independence which isn't far though. But The Bread Board is becoming a destination food spot. People from Salem will drive there for pizza, beer, and the candied bacon. (Amazing)
Klamath Falls should've made the list, I was born and raised here and it just sucks to high heaven! It used to be nice when I was a kid but now it's just awful, the drivers shouldn't have a license, the neighbors are rude and disrespectful, the crime is the worst I've seen, because it's so close to California and Crater Lake the traffic is a nightmare, in my opinion if a country declared nuclear war on us, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if Klamath was on the list, I'd go to the mountains and watch the mushroom cloud, it's that bad here 😢

I used to live in Klamath Falls in the 1970’s and went to college there. It was a pretty good place at that time. I do remember all the Californians moving into the area. It makes me so sad to hear how awful it has become. I have a sister who lives there now, and she doesn’t like it either.
I went to OIT, too. Class of '76. Can't say I was fond of the place. Every Friday night, the commons would shut down and we'd have to go into town to get dinner. About the only time you went into town because the locals hated us students. All the profs drank at the Red Garter after classes. What a bad time on my life and K-Falls made it dreary. Haven't been back since.
I've in Eastern Oregon and love it! Been thru Jordan several times and yes a pretty Sketchy town.
I agree with the comments regarding Fall City. I worked as a Cop for 7 Years in Dallas Oregon near-by. Dueling banjos for sure. Friday nights it was Squeal like a Pig.
I am a little late getting in this one, but I would take 10 Prospect Oregon rather than live in Chiloquin. Maybe Briggs was already there and decided to save what hair he has left so he didn't mention it? I agree that Cave Junction is just as bad as it gets, and equals Chiloquin for Suckage. I have been to prospect many times and I think it is a great little town as is Butte Falls, just down the Fish Lake highway. Believe me, if you haven't been to Chiloquin or Cave Junction don't rate any small town bad.

Oregon is like the state time forgot. It's a weird freaking place in general. And yes, I grew up in Oregon.
Just visited Maupin Oregon last week for a rafting trip. It’s amazing how isolated that town is. Rafting is the ONLY reason someone would ever go there, since it isn’t on the way to any other place.
I live 30 minutes from Maupin and I go there for kayaking and fishing
@@Michael-by4yb Oh yea, 2 reasons, forgot to mention the fishing along with floating. Saw lots of people fishing while floating the river.
Fishing, whitewater rafting, kayaking. Maupin gets a bad rap because it's isolated and outsiders ome in and commit stupid crimes. like DUI, drunken assault on officers etc.
I spent a lot of my high school weekends camping there with my friends - floating through boxcar, fishing, sitting around a camp fire. We really liked it.
I have friends that go Deer hunting near there & they never say anything about sketchyness
Th best part of Oregon is rural communities, it certainly isn't the week minded liberal I5 corridor.
Places like Spray remind me of Seligman Arizona, if it exists, it's gets stolen, guaranteed. It's like a competition on how much each neighbor can steal the most from each other.
