"I was not amused", about a sudden earthquake at the outskirts of a possible imminent volcanic eruption, is a very... Icelandic flavor of understatement. Stay safe, my friend!

3 minutes....Jesus. Even 30 would be insane. The fact that Icelanders in the past were like "this is a no-go zone", then people may want to pay a bit of attention this time.

I actually read a German article on the situation today, and they mentioned how "a drone pilot with a thermal camera" found some worrisome spots at Illahraun. My first thought was "I bet that was Gylfi!" and the second "He'll probably upload another update today or tomorrow."
However, they also mentioned how the Blue Lagoon only has prepared to evacuate within 2 hours, and that many visitors were oblivious to the actual danger of an imminent eruption just a stone's throw away...

I hope everyone in Grindavik and the surrounding farms and settlements have their evacuation plan sorted so they can get out quickly and safely should the worst happen. Thermal signatures, no matter how small, can be a good indicator of where the ground is showing weakness or where a dike is forming. You're getting better at using your Thermal Drone and being able to interpret what it is showing you, Gylfi. Stay safe my friend.

@@JustIcelandic What to expect if you live on the active volcano island which is actually formed by volcanos and keeps growing? You'll need to show some respect and reverence to the nature and just remember you're invited there temporarily and should be ready at any time leave those places where the land forming process is starting. This eruption series are predicted to last around 200 years, so after this time you could rebuild the plant if it will be destroyed this time, which would be sad but understandable - it happened to stand on the way of the natural processes this time. The task of people there is just to move in the safe place on time to prevent any casualties and I think icelanders are good at it. But if the eruption reach the scale of Laki eruption it'll be tough to escape and avoid its detrimental effects because the whole world will be affected. I hope it'll not be so huge this time.

Thanks once again for all your work. Unlike the previous tourist eruptions this has a different feel to it this time. Rather than looking forward to an exciting display I'm very much hoping nothing happens.
While the chances of a disaster at the Blue Lagoon might be very low during an individual visit and I can therefore understand why people are still going there it does seem reckless for it still to be open. The possibility a mass casualty event is clearly above zero and that is before a possible phreatic explosion is considered which could occur with no warning at all.

Your explanation of the thermal imagining is what brings us to you. I am saddened that this is not likely to be another tourist eruption. Looking from outside, it seems crazy that there is not more official activity even if it is to learn a little about forecasting eruptions! It is also crazy that there are not “official” thermal drones active in the area. I wonder if the authorities have plans for building dykes or barrier walls to protect facilities and town if practical? The lack of “obvious” official action seems very lazy!!! ???

Sorry to rain on yours but... thermal stuff is largely useless to determine if it is going to erupt because rocks are very, very good at heat insulation, so to make any heat to show up on the surface, the magma would have to breach the surface already.
Remember, we used similar method to snap few thermal pics on Kilauea crater floor in mere hours revealing no heat before the magma broke through in August.

    • @stephanieparker1250

@@Helezhelm I was thinking maybe helpful for showing movement of things already near the surface, like the steam vents. Plus it’ll help to provide info where it would be dangerous for people to go. 👍

Thank You for the great thermal drone work, diagrams and commentary. Much appreciated. Hopefully, all people, animals and infrastructure will remain safe. 🙏🌋🇮🇸💕.
Blue Lagoon Management should think 'Whakaari' eruption (White Island, NZ), where in 2019, 22 people died (mostly tourists) and 15 people were severely burnt by falling ash and searing gas.
    Stay safe all. 🙏🌋💕
