Did you know that the military is taking out tunnels, roads, around 3 and mega trains tracks at 6 and sub bases at around 9. At all come off the ports .
The people of Grindavik have my sincere sympathy. My town was never evacuated in most of the 50 years I have lived here, until spring 2022 for severe flooding and twice this past summer for wildfire. Whatever the reason it is hard to leave your home, property and livelyhood to the caprices of nature and circumstance. My prayers for the people of Grindavik.
Astute comment! The use of the words "caprices of nature" might be updated though. This page about geology showed that human societies borrow their time and places from nature, which on Earth is responsible in building the land we choose to live on. This video explained to us that the green valleys where carved by the pasage of lava in the past, explaining why these enriched regions were preferred by humans. There is nothing capricious about that, and thanks to geology, people have a new tool to make what in the past would have been seen as an unexplainable catastrophies intelligible and comprehensible. We must adapt to our environement and science really can help us in this. Iceland and Icelanders are beautiful example of that!
Amazing that Icelandic authorities are being so proactive by ordering an evacuation as a risk mitigation measure. Grindavik only has two roads out of town and one goes by the projected eruption site. Of course, in a worse case scenario, they could evacuate by sea. Hopefully any eruption will not put people or property at risk
Property may be very well protected by 3 feet of lava, but I know what you mean. I am thinking the same right down to all their pets too. I live in northern Canada, it was a rough year. Even my pets got smokers coughs and red eyes.
Doesn't amaze me. It's a volcanic event. Where and how are only approximations. There is a thermal energy plant next to it. There is water. There is potential for terrible steam explosions. Evacuation is the proper course.
There are 3 roads out of Grindavík: 43 going north, 425, going west, and 427 going east. They have closed 43 which is the one passing the projected eruption site (it goes between Blue Lagoon and Sandhnjúkagígar) but 425 and 427 are open and authorities are asking people to use these.
Whole town including its horses and probably sheep have been evacuated in like 2 hours time. Icelandic people are very helpful offering places to stay like summer houses and for those who have no place to stay there is a 'shelter' at the airport.
@@MiracleFound you aint wrong. Yet look at all of these earth quakes in the last few years. This is the only 1 that I have seen people removed from the danger on. A volcano on top of it. excellent explanation. i was stationed at Keflavik NAS back early 90s and my second son was born there, and he is now in Reykjavik University for his PhD. he told me this is BIG news in Iceland, they aren't messing around with it. the whole island is pitching in to help the residents being evacuated.
Been to Iceland several times for work and the Blue Lagoon often. I hiked up that hill north of Grindavik. Hoping all my friends in Iceland are safe !!
I was stationed in Keflavik back in the late 90's and that "green" area between Keflavik and Grindavik is actually a thick layer of moss that has covered all that volcanic rock. When you're hiking from the base to the Blue Lagoon it was rather comforting considering walking across lava flows in Central Oregon is extremely opposite.
You're doing yoeman's work with these updates: clear, comprehensive and qualifying the uncertainty of the situation as well as compassion for the locals, thanks Shawn!
Yes Jesus talked about the end times in Matthew 24:7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes.
Must be very hard times for the people in that town. I was thinking that if I was there and told to leave, what would I take that was important. My guess would be to just take the things you need to survive. Best wishes for the people of Grindavik.

My heart goes out to the people of Grindavik. These Icelandic eruptions are amazing and beautiful but the story changes when an entire town is in danger of being destroyed. I will be watching closely. Thank you so much for your videos.
Thank you, this was interesting and informative. Good thoughts for Grendavik and the people who live there, hope they are safe and nothing in the town is too badly damaged. Crossing my fingers!
I am from Grindavik, grew up there. Although now live in Kopavogur. But my family live there. The evacuation last night went really well and people are helping one another and coming together to assist in any way possible. No one knows when it will be safe to go home, but most already are aware that things are changing, not knowing if it will erupt, or where is frightening.
According to Gylfi of Just Icelandic, a coast guard ship has been sent to the harbor. His TH-cam channel has some detailed views of the crater area, as well as at least 2 shows on Grindivik.
Positive thoughts to the people of Grindavik and the people of the Reykjanes peninsula. I was just there last July to enjoy the sights of the last volcanic eruption and couldn't beleive how close it was to that town where we stayed at the local camping site.
I'm in WA state and we are experiencing a lot of earthquakes around Mt. St. Helens as well. 1-2 weeks ago, we had a couple of low amplitude quakes off the Puget Sound on land. All these areas that are experiencing volcanic quakes or tectonic quakes is concerning. Hope all people evacuate safely and nothing happens to their little town.
Wow. Thank you. On another well-known channel, a post on Facebook was shown that indicated that the Blue Lagoon access road was closed due to a giant crack that formed during the ongoing seismic unrest. Gylfi said it was the main road from Grindavik to Kef. Regardless, damage is inevitable under the circumstances. I’m a lifelong geology nerd, and it’s incredible how the magma concentration is shifting locations so rapidly. I’ve never seen anything like it.
As a kid from Cali (too many quakes to count!), we came to Boise some 62 years ago. As you know, Idaho has it's share of seismic activity. Reminding us that there are forces well beyond what we can control, expect or deal with. Reminds me of the 70s TV commercial that quipped, 'It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!'...she has plans for us, we shouldn't be so surprised!
Replying at: 00:20 EST: The warning was upgraded to emergency evac. All residents of Grindavík are obliged to evacuate their houses and leave the town. People are asked to put a note in the window to show that the house is empty. Drive carefully from home, it's dark and there are many people on the road. On the geothermal plant: I followed what happened in Hawaii in 2018: the pipes that go down deep don't carry water, they carry some highly explosive liquid which can get much hotten than 100° without boiling, and when it arrives at surface is then used to boil water which drives the turbines. However, if left untended it can start to boil/explode and cause huge amout of damage. In the case of PGV, they had procedures to empty the pipes that goes down deep and move that liquid offsite so lava wouldn't get to it. As I recall, they lost a couple of wells to lava (covered by it) but rest remained intanct and were able to resume production some time after eruption had ended and roads to site built.
So glad that they ordered the evacuation, given your confidence level of an eruption most likely happening close by or close enough to the village. About how far would they have to go to be relatively safe?
Whoa, those are shallow indeed 😮 Excellent evacuation tactics. Put up a note you evacuated! I was in San Francisco in 1989, on the waterfront. Shake rattle and roll! Scary.
Been watching the cams at Thorbjorn and Fagradalsfjall in real time. Icelandic Met Office is talking days as opposed to hours before lava breaks the surface.
Coast Guard is in attendance. Traffic is being moved out carefully. Some residents started leaving yesterday. The evacuation should go smoothly unless..... earthquake damage to roads.
Just landed a few hours ago and staying in Keflavik. Just laying in bed I’ve felt a few gentle tremors in the last few hours. Was supposed to head down to Grindavik tomorrow
Supposed to be going to Iceland in 2 days - Monday - Your update videos have been so helpful and educational - really appreciate your taking the time to do these videos and the updates on the volcano - hoping the eruption holds off until after we arrive or doesn't happen at all. So happy they were able to evacuate everyone just in case.
I'm glad that so many people are monitoring the situation, and that they're taking it seriously. With luck, it'll turn out to be nothing but a little burp. Regarding the earthquakes, I was home when a 3.4 hit, and we lived in a manufactured home. We were in the living room playing card games with some friends. Heard a big popping/banging noise and literally it came through under one side of the house and passed through to the other like a very noisy and shakey wave. The noise had a very low bass like sound to it. It was definitely a very weird experience. The next quake I was in was also mid to upper 3's and I was driving on the highway. It felt like something suddenly went wrong with the suspension on my suburban.
I’m a Geography student from Germany and I just discovered your channel through recommendations in the livestream. Subscription is done! Love the content. Just very fascinating stuff. Hope it turns out avoiding any destruction.
I am worried for the people there. And am glad they are evacuating now. I hope that somehow the eruption spares the town and power plant. Thinking of all those impacted, sending compassion from the Pacific NW USA
Very helpful, and thank you for mentioning trenches (if they are diggble in the soil). The problem with berms is that they are new and loose, whereas the walls of a trench are composed of soil that has been in place for millenia
It would be truly sad to lose the Blue Lagoon. It is one of the coolest places I have ever experienced. If given the chance, I highly recommend it. Iceland is such a magical place.
sometimes "right" clicking on the map and choosing "open in new tab" will bring the map to full size. hope this helps and thank you sharing this information.
On a channel called Hlidarmenn, I saw that road 43, I think, has been closed due to damage even though there have been some repairs. It looked like there was a way around the damage but that wasn't clear.
From someone living on the slopes of a dormant volcano, Haleakala on Maui, Hawaii, last eruption between 1480 and 1600, good luck to the people of Iceland. I had the pleasure of visiting Iceland in 2008 and fell in love with the country and its people. ❤ 🍀
I remember being a kid, 9 years old, living in Jerome, ID when Mt. St. Helens blew. I was so excited, and I kept look to the Northwest and wanting to see ash coming, of course it didn't. Then I moved to Lewiston in 1995 and eventually met my wife who has told me about the ash that fell. Then about 6-7 years ago I had the opportunity to actually go to see Mt. St. Helens. There are no pictures or videos that come even close to showing what Mother Nature can produce. If you have not been there, it is well worth the $4.50+ per gallon. To see actual mountain and/or lava erupting has to be an amazing sight sight!! 🌋🌋🌋🌋
When they have to evacuate it's appx. 30 miles to Reykjavik ... if the road there is still drive able ! So many places in the world to pray for this weekend ! May the LORD have mercy on us all.
No need to worry, even if the roads would all become unusable 90% of towns in Iceland are coastal so evacuation by sea would always be possible, one of our coastguard ships, Þór, is just outside of Grindavík now, all other ships in icelandic waters are willing and able to help if needed ❤
Great video with a lot of helpful information. I went few times to the eruptions near Grindavik during the past years. I just hope that Grindavik will not be affected but watching your video it is very likely that this will happen. It would be sad but as you pointed out, the people on Iceland are very adaptable.
CTRL+ will help make the artifacts on a web page larger. On the interactive EQ Map, try dialing down the depth to under 4, or under 2 clicks to help clean up the map better. Nice update, thanks.
As a person with some geologic sense, the fact that there are the fairly sizable shifts in the locus for the earthquakes would lead me to believe there is a major magma body at work here. I'm not sure the previous three eruptions affected this much area. If I can believe the Skjalfti website, there are appreciable earthquakes all over southwestern Iceland. And these shifts are quite fast even for viscous basaltic magma.
I know nothing of magma flow, however, the range and color chosen to indicate activity conveys that idea a bit too well. It is easy for my mind's eye to visualize this. Does the surface ground get noticeably warmer? Or steam at all, as the magma moves?
@@kslolohoku2665 Since the sill (horizontal area where the magma is) is at around 5km deep it wont warm the surface unless that magma is very close to the surface and starts interacting with ground water.
A fascinating video to see and hear as I’m located in Victoria Australia where we get very few earthquakes large enough to feel and no eruptions. My hopes that all pans out OK and everyone is safe.
My heart goes out and i hope that they will get to go back home soon.... i was just in iceland in june. Visited the blue lagoon and grindavik. Cute lil town and just hiked where the latest volcano just erupted!
Good to know that the authorities in Iceland appear to be acting proactively. I also feel that every Icelander will do everything possible to help all affected.
A follow-up and a question: - All people have been evacuated from Grindavík. They were told to leave all their belongings behind except for what was strictly needed. They sent a bunch of buses to get people out in case they didn't have a car or otherwise was unable to get away on their own. - I've seen several quakes in the ocean there, one just south of Grindavík with a depth of only 400m(!). Is it likely this could fart off in the ocean instead of going off at land? Or would the pressure be too great or temperature too low? I'm not a geologist (jarðfræðingur, "earth specialist", all those nice Icelandic words), so just asking.
Maybe the magma intrusion can keep moving south and erupt off the coast. You didn’t mention anything about its rising from its holding chamber 4-5 km down, which is encouraging. I hope it keeps moving east or south until the people and infrastructure are safe.
According to the folks at "Live from Iceland" who own that camera you recommended, the reason it's pointed at Grindavik now is because the local civil defense is "borrowing" it to watch the town. Live From Iceland's cameras: th-cam.com/video/804nPrAUAxg/w-d-xo.html
Here in firestorm-ridden California, my County has given us laminated, printed, hanging placards to place outside our homes if we have to evacuate in case of fire. This was part of a new wildfire prevention and response program, we also had exterior home and land inspections. In one terrible fast-moving fire, first responders risked their lives going door to door in the middle of the night, telling people to run for their lives. Those who didn’t died, it was terrible.
I remember when Mt St Helens had recurring earthquakes, getting closer together until the mountain blew north toward Seattle in 1980. The folks in the Vancouver Portland area considered themselves fortunate, even though they received a fair amount of ash. I remember standing in my driveway in Portland watching the plume of erupting ash. Hope everyone gets out ok.
It may not be known yet, but with the earthquake surge NNE of Grindavik then moving down into Grindavik itself it would be a valuable statistic to know if there is any uplift at those locations. We had heard of 8-10 cm in the area southwest of the Blue lagoon. If earthquakes had moved to the new locations was uplift observed? And what about this claim that was on your website that a tunnel was created to the surface that the magma could move up?! I find it quite fascinating and concerning how fast this threat of an eruption is moving.
I've experienced major earthquakes in the SF Bay Area and now, in SW Mexico. Icelanders have all my sympathy. May they be able to return to their community, safely.
I’m fascinated with how you delineate when one quake ends, and another begins. I guess this boils down to specific location of each one. Does anyone know if there are any Ham Radio operators on the air….. i.e. a running source of updated info?
Ha! The reporter interviewing the Mayor is Valur, formerly of Reykjavik Grapevine, he and his dog Polly used to do updates for RG on the volcanic events, it’s great to see him❤

@@Tugela60 😅😂. You can just look at any global map and see how Africa and South America fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. That observation a hundred years ago is what inspired Alfred Wagner to propose that the continents were joined together in ancient times. It took 50 years before a mechanism for how these continents could have once been joined together was formulated. Often called continental drift or plate tectonics.

BIG FAN SHAWN, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR your updates.😊😊😊❤
No problem 😊
Thanks for the updates Shawn. Watching from Texas.
I'm watching from Southern California 😮😮
Great work Shawn, I appreciate all your videos, especially for places I thought I knew a lot about but you fill in the blanks very well. Thank you!
Hey, Im from Iceland, and I live in Grindavík, we all have evacuated
Prayers for all, GrayGecko. Here in Alabama we have tornadoes and slight tremors which have been destructive. May God bless you and keep you safe.
Visited this area 15 years ago. Absolutely extraordinary landscape. Hope everyone stays safe
I’m a Geography student from Germany and I just discovered your channel through recommendations in the livestream. Subscription is done! Love the content. Just very fascinating stuff. Hope it turns out avoiding any destruction.
Thanks and welcome aboard. Enjoy perusing the existing geology videos I have.
Oh, my goodness. I am so glad the authorities are being so proactive, but it must be so hard for everyone. So many emotions. I pray all remain safe.
I am worried for the people there. And am glad they are evacuating now. I hope that somehow the eruption spares the town and power plant. Thinking of all those impacted, sending compassion from the Pacific NW USA
Prayers for the best
They all went to stay with cousins and are taking this opportunity to throw large block parties. Iceland never misses an opportunity to smile.
Thanks, wonderful report. You really made it clear what is going on and where. Great use of graphics ❤❤
sometimes "right" clicking on the map and choosing "open in new tab" will bring the map to full size. hope this helps and thank you sharing this information.
My Prayers for the SAFETY of the People of GRINDAVIK and the Surrounding Areas.
On a channel called Hlidarmenn, I saw that road 43, I think, has been closed due to damage even though there have been some repairs. It looked like there was a way around the damage but that wasn't clear.
Thank you! I appreciate all you’re doing!
That Mid-Atlantic ridge is a big crack and unstable i hope this not going to be historically big 😮.
My late grandmother immigrated to Canada 🇨🇦 from Iceland. My hopes and prayers to everyone affected ....
I'm glad I found this, I had no idea this was going on in Iceland.
Thank for sharing.
Always appreciate your insight Sir.
I live up here, too. The Ghost forest at Neskowin impressed me. Once i understood how it came to be. Wow.
@@user-ii3vn8tn3q Just Amazing to see the destruction. I couldn't imagine what it was like right after.
Great update, fingers crossed all are well.
Thank you so much - so informative and much appreciated 🙏🙏🙏
Great video with a lot of helpful information. I went few times to the eruptions near Grindavik during the past years. I just hope that Grindavik will not be affected but watching your video it is very likely that this will happen. It would be sad but as you pointed out, the people on Iceland are very adaptable.
Thanks for sharing your expertise knowledge. Very much appreciated.
Thanks again Shawn! I heard that they also evacuated personnel from the power plant.
Many thanks for the information.
CTRL+ will help make the artifacts on a web page larger.
On the interactive EQ Map, try dialing down the depth to under 4, or under 2 clicks to help clean up the map better.
Nice update, thanks.
Take care people there. Thinking of you, from Australia. 💝❤🔥
I read on the Iceland Geology site today that there could possibly be more than one magmatic system in play here. Is that possible?
I know nothing of magma flow, however, the range and color chosen to indicate activity conveys that idea a bit too well. It is easy for my mind's eye to visualize this.
Does the surface ground get noticeably warmer? Or steam at all, as the magma moves?
@@kslolohoku2665 Since the sill (horizontal area where the magma is) is at around 5km deep it wont warm the surface unless that magma is very close to the surface and starts interacting with ground water.
@@kslolohoku2665 Yes, but only when magma gets very close to the surface.
@@jaym8257 thank you. That makes sense.
Super informative thank you! Just getting up to speed with this from New Zealand. Fascinating but scary at the same time
A fascinating video to see and hear as I’m located in Victoria Australia where we get very few earthquakes large enough to feel and no eruptions.
A follow-up and a question:
- All people have been evacuated from Grindavík.
The lava could erupt along the coast but much better chance of it erupting on land, likely near the Sundhnukur craters.
Maybe the magma intrusion can keep moving south and erupt off the coast. You didn’t mention anything about its rising from its holding chamber 4-5 km down, which is encouraging. I hope it keeps moving east or south until the people and infrastructure are safe.
@@annatraustadottir4387 : thank you for this information and good wishes for minimum damage and zero injuries.
I was watching another local geologist today who said the town has over 3,000 residents.
Wow, great video. I sure hope the town doesn't get wrecked. 🙏🥺
As you know, Nov 11 early AM is very dynamic also. Looking forward to hearing from you Shawn.
May everyone be safe! Prayers from Phoenix AZ USA
Thank you. Let's hope for the very best outcome.
Thank you for this information. Many blessings.
First time I heard about you. Thanks for your information ❤ wow
Ha! The reporter interviewing the Mayor is Valur, formerly of Reykjavik Grapevine, he and his dog Polly used to do updates for RG on the volcanic events, it’s great to see him❤
As a child I noticed that the shape of the South American continent was a near perfect fit with Africa.... so my appreciation for all things geologic/volcanic etc has been an interest all my life.
Love your video posts, Prof Willsey! Look forward to watching as soon as you post one!
Thanks!
It was just your imagination.
@@michaeldeierhoi4096 There were no ancient times, the continents were as god made them. They just look similar because he took some short cuts designing them.
@@Tugela60 There you go confusing science with religion! 🙄. When will you folks ever learn?
@@michaeldeierhoi4096 They did learn. God was just lazy.
Thank-you. This is super interesting and, as a lover of rocks, fascinating as well.
I'm on the edge of my seat here in Florida for the folks up there in Iceland 🇮🇸 hoping the town doesn't get blobbed and that the power plant doesn't get wiped out. Also, would be a shame if the blue lagoon gets wiped out. 🙏 Y'all stay safe up there 🙏 💙
Would/could you please also show windflow? I'm interested in all the factors that affect the population, air traffic and fallout effects. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your research!
THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE; I WATCH FOR VOLCANIC ACTIVITY; YELLOWSTONE CALDERA IS ONE OF MY MAJOR INTERESTS. I TRULY APPRECIATE YOUR WATCH ON THIS SUBJECT. :)
