Being from Oregon, I cannot understand how anyone would actually dislike the fact that someone pumps gas for them when visiting the state. Its a luxury. Not only that but it provides jobs.
It'd also nice that you don't have to get out of your car in the dead of winter and pump your gas. It also is a way to cause less pump fires. The static charge you create getting in and out of your car has been known to spark up fires at gas pumps if the spark comes in contact with the gas. It has happened many times. Biggest downside is if you are at a busy gas station, it might take the person a bit of time to come over to you, and then finish the pump when its all done.
I have a Jeep Wrangler that is very difficult to put gas in. It either clicks off too soon or not at all so gas will spurt out without warning. It also has a plastic fender right below that stains if gas is spilled on it. I don’t want anyone but me putting gas in my Jeep for this particular reason as l know exactly how to gas it up. I also like to do other things like clean my windows when l gas up and l don’t want to deal with some random stranger. I find it annoying and irritating. They often want to engage in small talk and l just want to put the gas in and go. I like self serve in stores as well. I’m just not into personal interaction when buying things. I think full service is a nice option for those who want it but I don’t like that it’s mandatory and forced on me. Fortunately 48 states are agreeable to me in this respect. When l lived in both NJ and Oregon l would go to gas stations where l was allowed to pump my own. Often the attendant would just stand there. In Oregon not all gas stations are full service. The ones in rural areas were self service and l lived in a rural area. It was at the coast where it was an issue.

Thank you for sharing the beauty of my home state, I am from a little town in Sussex county Newton, New Jersey. When most people think of New Jersey or people I talk to and they ask me where I'm from, I tell them , New Jersey, they automatically assume the city of Newark, believe it or not there are a lot of small towns, and tons of gorgeous farmland. I stumbled across your video and clicked to watch it, makes me happy to see my home state. I'm homesick
I lived in Hopewell next to LAMBERTVILLE and frequented these towns often. The drive alone up the Delaware is breathtaking on a lovely day and all these towns are cute and fun to visit. Especially love Lambertville and Frenchtown. New Jersey is called the Garden State for a good reason. 80 percent of New Jersey is beautiful and green. You can go to the Northwest for the mountains Southeast for the Shore South Jersey for tons of farmland. Although expensive to live I truly love I can drive to NYC , Philly, the Mountains and Beach all within an hour or so.
I grew up in Lambertville and ditto on all you wrote! I look back on my youth and realize I lived an amazing Huckleberry Finn adventure along the Delaware River during my youth. It is truly a magical place! It's so awesome to see the whole area has retained the history and experience of life from years past, even with modern conveniences. Seeing it from afar, I appreciate the calm and freedom I felt when I lived in Lambertville. I didn't realize it then but I really loved New Hope which is across the river from Lambertville, I loved Washington's Crossing Park which was nearby, I loved the Jersey shore which was 1+ hours away, I loved that you could take in theater in Philadelphia with a 50 minute drive and do the same in NYC in an hour+ drive. It was a calm, engaged and fun place to live with all the opportunities you would ever need nearby. I miss living there and wish everyone who live there the very best!
I couldn't agree more with these comments! I live about a half hour away from Lambertville and go there often. It's so charming and love old homes...has some beautiful art galleries and antiques/unique shops. Frenchtown is great, too...yes, very quaint and looks like it should be in New England. New Jersey has a lot to offer in beauty...all over the state. Like anywhere, you have the not good, but there is so much good in such a small state. New Jersey gets a bad rap.🧡
New Jersey is absolutely beautiful!!! The North East of NJ is what everyone thinks of…but the beach the woods it’s all so beautiful!! It’s getting really expensive to live here now…
It was always expensive living in New Jersey. I grew-up in Jackson, went to Ocean County College for 2 years before leaving for the US Army for my 5 year commitment and then onto Europe for the past 30 years. I flew back last summer to visit family and friends from my childhood, first time flying in over 12 years. I visited my old house in Jackson, Asbury Park, Ocean City, Toms River, Point Pleasant, South Plainfield, Rutgers University and NYC. Schöne Grüße aus Bayern.
@@fluffyusa nice!! I did the same thing, I was in Vilseck 2nd Stryker Regiment…I miss Nuremberg…I can’t live in NJ anymore, a 1 bedroom apart in a nice place starts at $2500
@@AirborneAnt Dude I arrived in Fürth/Nuremberg (Darby Kaserne)back in 93' after serving my first Assignment in the military at Ft Benning Ga. My MOS was 95B, I was the last 3 MPs who closed the US Military Community in Nuremberg then moved up to Schweinfurt for 1 year and then ETS Jan 97'. During my time in serving in Bavaria, I pulled Road Duty in Graf, Augsburg, Giebelstadt (just south of Würzburg) Erlangen and Kitzingen...then training in Vilseck, Ansbach and Hohenfels. No matter where you go into the world, it's expensive everywhere! Gas/Heating Oil prices, food and other supplies have sky rocketed since the Ukraine-Russo war. Gas was always expensive here but paying over $9 a gallon is crazy. I'm wishing you and your family if you have one the best in life. Prost/cheers, schöne Grüße Bayern!
This tiny state has it all. Its geographic landscapes are also very diverse, from the rocky Highlands in the north to its pine barrens down south and everything in between. Its proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City also makes it the ideal home for well to do folks. The only downside is that it's property taxes are among the highest in the nation.
I grew up in Lawrenceville next to Princeton.. and not far from Lambertville/New Hope. Tons of history. This whole area is my entire childhood.. truly love the region and so many memories… from riding my bike up and down the canal from Washington Crossing as a kid, all the revolutionary war history in the area, getting messed up on the wing dam with friends and stargazing, goats hill & bowman’s tower, rafting down the delaware, my first boyfriend who lived in New Hope, nights out at John&Pete’s, my crazy friends who’d dive off the tops of the bridges when the water was high enough, the rope-swing into the river, exploring the old abandoned haunted(?) school at the top of a hill, boring canal field trips, the fall foliage, everything.. i love everything about the region. I love central jersey and while I love NYC my current home, I hope to return to my roots. PS: you should have made a left at that first light in Lambertville and headed northward, that street has some gorgeous victorian homes (and older) on it. Gotta see it during Halloween. Oh and yeah the canal has bass, sunfish, catfish, perch, and pickerel… PLUS some pretty big snapping turtles that i’ve always feared losing digits to as well as some temperamental swans in a few spots.
I grew up in Milford NJ and I’m so glad to see someone appreciate the beauty of the small towns in NJ! Whenever I tell people I am from NJ they assume the more populated and city areas! Thank you for covering and showing all of the historic beauty of the more country side of NJ!
@@Maks-bj2tu I live in California and in the San Joaquin Valley. We're about 2 1/2 to 3 hours from the coast. I wish I could live closer to the coast as I love the ocean. I'll bet there parts of New Jersey that are very scenic, it would be fun to visit New England in the fall.
My home state- we have the best of everything…food, services, beach, mountains, farms (Garden State) , cities and burbs…yes expensive but salaries are higher too. 🥰
Mine too.....One should not judge a book from it's cover.... When I travel around the US like Joe n Nic the hotels always ask me about the state n why would I would live there......I did buy a house in NC which is 7x's larger than NJ to get away from the state government bs and rat race.... be well.
My experience with NJ is terrible, a girl I loved was raped multiple times by different people at different times. So I have only seen the evil and danger there

Be sure to come and check out Cumberland and Salem counties for all your rural, lush, and secluded needs. Check out the Maurice River and all that the back bays and salt marshes have to offer. Fishing villages and industry towns that have been here since the 1700s. Then make you way east to the Pine Barrens. Mullica River, Batsto Village, Weymouth Furnance, Smithville village... there is so much to see. Then head as far south as you can to exit 0 on the Garden State Parkway and check out Cape May and Cold Spring Village. Southern New Jersey is truly a gem. I would genuinely love to meet up and give you guys the grand tour.
Same here. I have grown up in the southern part of NJ (Camden County. Shouting distance to Gloucester County & near several bridges leading into Philly & Delaware). I will occasionally hear a town, borough or municipality name & wonder where it's at 😂
There is so much beautiful and open land in Jersey. I’m a former Jerseyan and grew up in the Somerset County area and driving through there in the fall brings tears to my eyes
Hey Lloyd, we miss you here in Somerset County. Far Hills here, Jersey born & raised. Sorry you had to leave our beautiful county! Our State is SO very beautiful. We are so BLESSED. It's worth every dime ❤
Live the segment in New Jersey. I am originally from Pennsylvania but I did live in Stockton, NJ. The large building in Stockton was the Stocking Inn. It was the place where the musical South Pacific was written. There is very beautiful towns and villages all through New Jersey. More than I expected as a Pennsylvanian. Thank you for all the roads trips. Enjoy all of it.
A very enjoyable tour through these pretty towns, and as always, so much beautiful and unique architecture. I love these little strolls around town, so interesting and relaxing. Thanks so much, and I'm looking forward to your next stop !!😊💚
I was watching you on the PA side of the Delaware River talking about Washington's Crossing. I'm originally from Bucks Country, PA and they do a reenactment of Washington's Crossing the Delaware every year. The town I'm from is nearby called Newtown, PA. It would be a nice town for you to explore. It's a walking town with a lot of Revolutionary War history, an old theatre. The town still retains it's old charm though the suburbs around it have grown, along with shopping centers. This is great watching this from where I live in overseas.
if you're still in New Jersey you should go to Monmouth County. Red Bank is a beautiful small town there, Sandy Hook Beach has beautiful views of Manhattan and many beautiful parks/cute beach towns.
Fort Hancock is in Sandy Hook. The view of NYC is awesome people are starting to buy houses on “officers row” and restore them as Airbnbs. If you don’t know what I’m talking about check it out it’s amazing place to vacation with family/friends.
I must say as a mother in New Jersey that the full service is awesome for parents with babies. It was great as I didn’t have to get my baby daughter out of the car my to prepay for gas. So convenient. New Jersey has the best diners. The problem with NJ is the cost of living, high taxes, and the politics. People have difficulty retiring here.
You’re right about all of it. Loved growing up in Holmdel 70’s-80’s. But by adulthood even my parents were saying it changed. None of us live in NJ any more.
I'm glad to hear that you found beauty in our state. Please make sure to travel into northern Jersey as well. Lots to see up here, once you get past the urban hoods.
WOW ! Lambertville seems like a good place to live, I,m thinking. Thanks Joey- love all the places you go and show us- I love the 'people-friendliness' infrastructure that is in the USA. I live in a small rural town in South Australia (pop: 1.71k) -an old railway town, but its wonderful. We still have old original buildings here, but they are all single storey, not like you have- the 2/3 storey houses, which are just gorgeous. The old store front buildings are still here, but some are now occupied as houses, which is ok, its important that they are still here.
I got engaged at the Lambertville Station Inn and used to visit Frenchtown Borough Hall when they were a client of the company I work for! This video was like reliving my own memories of walking around these towns :)
I grew up riding my bike over that bridge back and forth. When the river is low, you can see the reflection of all the broken mirrors glistening in the water below
This is great. I lived in Washington Crossing NJ in the 80s. Nothing much has changed since then except for a few more traffic lights. Thanks for sharing
Frenchtown and Pittstown are awesome. I spent a week there visting a buddy and stayed out in a rural suburb outside french town with farms and rolling hills everywhere. Amazing fishing spots and waterfalls all over and at night there are swarms of green fireflies all over.
@@samanthab1923 and navigating the circles! They redesigned the circle (Routes 202/31/12) where the vehicle inspection used to be. The design is different, but the traffic is just as bad, if not worse.
Very calming ride-along, and what lovely looking small towns. All of our states have towns like this once you leave the center, urban areas or cites (something we did in 2020). My parents and I would take 2 week road trips, and stop in every small town we could. My mom loved seeing them, taking pictures, eating at local restaurants, shopping, etc. The people were ALWAYS very nice, too. I am lucky enough to live in a great small town as well, and we own our home, cars and have zero debt. Life is good! Great Road Tip! Thanks.
Excellent walking tour video, old homes very well maintained, and your description of "quaint" was spot on. One thing is for sure, you'll see the other side of the coin when you get to Trenton. Safe travels, Cheers!!
I love the Delaware River, history, park and statues! The Taylor House is very nice. The bridge is very narrow ! Imagine breaking down in the middle of it 🧐. I can’t imagine not pumping my own gas! Very nice towns along the River. Beautiful homes. The downtowns are all very inviting! Would love to visit! Lovely horse statue in Frenchtown. Looking forward to your next video! 😊
I loved seeing that part of New Jersey ❤! Quite the counterbalance to driving on highways through the part near NYC. If you've never been to Concord MA, not far from Boston, you will love it - very prosperous, very quaint, equally as historic as Washington crossing the Delaware.
I live in Ohio now but when I lived in NJ I'd often drive on the Pa side of the Delaware from New Hope down to Easton. On a spring day it was glorious and a friend of mine who came along once said it looked like we were in the English countryside. Frenchtown had a wonderful restaurant in a colonial era hotel downtown. I hope it's still there.
Most of NJ is expensive. Making 100k a year in NJ is like making 50k in other states. Most homes are 400k or more in NJ unless it's a fixer upper. The only places that are cheap are bad areas like Trenton or Camden. North West NJ is beautiful and a lot less crowded than the rest of the state. I love NJ and will never leave.
Yes, North West , NJ is unlike the rest of the State. Mountainous and beautiful. Definitely like living ANYWHERE but Jersey. That's the reason why so many celebrities have homes there. Because the majority of working-class folks in the rest of the State could NEVER afford the multi, multi million dollar pricetags of THOSE places.
Agreed. Even here in SJ the homes Fn expensive. I’ve been looking for a few years and it’s brutal. Our twdes and insurance are high too. But if you want to go to Philly, MdmD, the jersey shore , Poconos all with a few hours at the most-South Jersey is great,
Wow. That is a pretty area. This has gone on my list of areas to visit. Gold stars to New Jersey. Next to no crime. And so much to see. Some amazing architecture. Looks a good place to live. So many places you visit are run down. Or too glitzy. The balance here seems just right. Impressive.
Sth OZ here// OH !! I see the Ukrainian flag on some places !! that pleases me. The old trees in these places are so gorgeous. It makes a 'town/city' to have the green. Joey, you gotta keep doing this thing- cause I dont know what I,m goin do if you stop !! I,m in Tailem Bend, SA.
Your opening at Washington's Crossing reminds me of Robert Sullivan's book "My American Revolution" where he writes about the trials and tribulations of the modern reenactment. I love this kind of afternoon drive, checking out the towns and sights along the river. What a coincidence to see this episode's cat right in front of the alley with the "Cat Country" sign!
I lost my sideview mirror on that bridge when a rather wide vehicle was bearing down on me...oh what memories..and thank you very much for highlighting some of the many beautiful areas in New Jersey. There are certain content creators that go out of their way to rag on the state. Sure there are warts, all states have them, but they do not bother showing the positive side..thanks again...
Wow I appreciate your comment because you're right, New Jersey is portrayed in a very poor light by many. It seems the negatives are pretty much tied to the larger municipalities and politics. I'm assuming you're a New Jersey resident and frankly you are the first resident I've read a positive review from about NJ. Do you live in a smaller town? Do the problems of the urban areas affect you much? I've never been to New Jersey, I'm asking sincerely.
@@kevinfoley8105 The only bad parts of NJ are the urban sprawl located across from NYC and Philly. Shocker. The rest of the state that isn't tainted by those cities is made up of beautiful mountains, farms, forest, and beaches. People just fly in to Newark and see that absolute dump next to NYC (a bigger dump), and assume that's our whole state.
I've never been to New Jersey, and growing up all I heard were the jokes about the state being just a big highway, all paved, no green, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to see that that isn't true. The towns here looks green and pretty, and a nice place to live. If I ever move back to the States, I will most definitely check out Lambertville.
There’s a reason it’s called the Garden State! I grew up about 30-45 mins east of the first town, Lambertville, and I am so glad I was raised in a nice small town in NJ, got the best of everything, farms in my town plus Philly & NYC, tons of cultures etc
It’s the most undeserved reputation. NJ is rich in culture and history, as well as gorgeous quite towns and some of the best public services in the country. Not only is it one of the most educated states, it has one of the most extensive state-run public transportation system in the country, and has some of the best public schools in the nation. It’s also one of the wealthiest states per capita.
I've been to NJ once as a kid. My brain remembers it as pretty much a giant interstate highway between Philadelphia and NYC lol. Of course that was 20+ years ago. I've never really given any thought to the small towns there! I have to remind myself that there are obviously some rural areas everywhere. Frenchtown looks almost like a quaint small town in New England. Very charming!

I was born and raised in New Jersey, but I moved to the Southwest long ago. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to all 50 states and explore destinations overseas. Every place is unique and beautiful in its own way. Let’s make the most of our time here and appreciate the world around us.
I was wondering if you were coming here when I saw you posted in Pennsylvania. I’ve been watching your videos for a few months and I love them. I’ve even got my dad hooked on them. you picked some great towns. If you ever head north closer to NYC, you should visit Montclair, summit, short hills, and maplewood/south orange. they are wealthy towns but have cute downtowns. don’t forget to try the pizza and bagels. Welcome to NJ!!
Wonderful video. I’m familiar these towns since I’m from nearby in Pennsylvania. This is a big area for antiques and galleries, and this is what attracts tourism.
Any chance you'd be putting together a compilation of different cities with very low/no crime rates and low poverty rates? I love listening to your videos while I'm at work. Love seeing the older homes and neighborhoods. Keep up the great work! This is one of my favorite videos to date.
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip Thanks, yeah, you could even maybe do a low medium high crime, poverty, home values thing and then mix and match, low crime, high property values etc. I know I'd watch. I grew up on a farm outside Stockton; next time you are in the area, you need to stop at Bull's Island State Park ( you drove right by it on the way to Frenchtown) and check out the suspension walking bridge, a unique structure leading to Lumberville, Pa . Jersey, despite its reputation, is - as you found out - spectacular bn a few , special spots along the Delaware.
Very nice video. I think the image most people have of New Jersey, other than the Jersey shore, is heavily influenced by regions of the State that are part of metropolitian areas centered outside of the State. Newark and surrounding towns in the New York City metro area and possibly Camden in the Philadelphia metro area have significant crime and poverty issues and are the areas people are familuar with since those are the areas most people have been to and get most of the national media coverage. It's unusual to see anything about the region covered in this video. Like I said nice video showing towns that get little attention outside of that region.
I love the history, the stats and all the info on these towns- it makes me feel I,ve visited there. Now, I probably know more about the USA than I do about OZ, but we dont have a lot of OLD HISTORY/buildings like you do. When OZ was 'settled' building materials were -wattle & daub, so most didnt last. Where I am, is Limestone, so we still have old buildings.
The Durham boat used by Washington's army is named from Durham PA, right across the river from Milford. They were used to haul freight on the Delaware from the Durham Ironworks.
Great video, thank you! Love all these towns ~ Milford is the one we go back to year after year ... very Small Town, USA -- great antiques, boutiques, restaurants, etc. VISIT NJ!
Living in Philly you found one of my favorite places to escape to. The views and history in the Washington crossing area are timeless. New Hope is another town from the past in that area. And I thought you would catch my favorite local restaurant “It’s Nuts” on the Jersey side left from that narrow bridge. Long message but I am a long time watcher and never commented until now. I enjoy all of your videos and seeing places that I may never get to except through your videos. keep them coming I do enjoy watching.
Grew up in Mercer County New Jersey and still live here now in Monroe Township in Middlesex. That area of New Jersey is very nice. Good job on showing the brightside of New Jersey and not just the inner cities of Newark and East Orange.
Could things about the Delaware River and gas compared to PA. The river is massive as you go south near and in Philadelphia. Gas in PA is normally about 25 cents more expensive than NJ (who has attendants). This was a great episode. I think the south NJ beaches are the most beautiful on the east coast.
Hi Joe & Nic from south London, UK where the current temperature is 18C, yep some very quaint properties and I'm very surprised they didn't call the area "Little Britain"!
From Milford you could have continued toward Holland Township on River Road. River Road is primarily one lane wide although it accommodates 2 way traffic. There are spots in the road for northbound drivers to pull over and wait when they see southbound vehicles approaching. There are very interesting views of the river, and Pennsylvania from this route. Thanks for the video.

We the people of New Jersey welcome you !
Awesome!
I grew up in Milford NJ and I’m so glad to see someone appreciate the beauty of the small towns in NJ! Whenever I tell people I am from NJ they assume the more populated and city areas! Thank you for covering and showing all of the historic beauty of the more country side of NJ!
I had a pen pal in the 1960's who lived in Bricktown and Toms River. I've never been to New Jersey, do you know where those towns are?
@@diane1390 Yes! Toms River is right near the shore so it’s an hour and 30 minutes from Milford! Those towns are on the other side of NJ!

Mine too.....One should not judge a book from it's cover....

Mo. Please stay away. Leave us alone.
NJ has over 400 municipalities. Even after living in the state for 30 years, I still see or hear the name of a town that is new to me.
Boy have I fallen in love with new Jersey.
Fascinating! As a history buff, thank you so much for showing us this.
I'm from Doylestown loving it
I agree Frenchtowns downtown is QUAINT and I would Love to visit there. Thank you for sharing.
I grew up in Frenchtown. In the 60s .It was great town. Still have family there.
My mom was born on 2nd street during the Lindberg baby trial
if you're still in New Jersey you should go to Monmouth County. Red Bank is a beautiful small town there, Sandy Hook Beach has beautiful views of Manhattan and many beautiful parks/cute beach towns.
Asbury park
Fort Hancock is in Sandy Hook. The view of NYC is awesome people are starting to buy houses on “officers row” and restore them as Airbnbs. If you don’t know what I’m talking about check it out it’s amazing place to vacation with family/friends.
What about Long Branch? I grew up there & it's horrible now with all condos, rich people from N.Y.😢
Farmingdale is a nice small town
I must say as a mother in New Jersey that the full service is awesome for parents with babies. It was great as I didn’t have to get my baby daughter out of the car my to prepay for gas. So convenient. New Jersey has the best diners. The problem with NJ is the cost of living, high taxes, and the politics. People have difficulty retiring here.
You’re right about all of it. Loved growing up in Holmdel 70’s-80’s. But by adulthood even my parents were saying it changed. None of us live in NJ any more.
I love this series you are doing. Almost like a PBS show about towns we really want to know about.
Grew up in Jersey but left 32 years ago. Lambertville and New Hope, PA across the river were my favorite areas next to the shore
Although I grew up in Pa , I went to Lambertville many times. Super small but some cool dive bars and restaurants
By far the best I‘ve seen so far in your videos.
Beautiful little towns. Enjoyed so much. Thankyou for taking us with you.
I'm loving your travels.
Here in South Africa we have petrol attendants at all gas stations. Tyres, oil & water checked & windows washed

It’s good to see someone going through my town !!!
More wonderful meanderings through America and musings about the places you're visiting. Another great video, always interesting to watch.
Passed through Washington’s crossing so many times, such a beautiful area!
The crossing reenactment on Christmas morning is fantastic, it's a must see at least once.
Thank you for the great comment, Alexandra! :)
I loved seeing that part of New Jersey ❤! Quite the counterbalance to driving on highways through the part near NYC. If you've never been to Concord MA, not far from Boston, you will love it - very prosperous, very quaint, equally as historic as Washington crossing the Delaware.
Thank you for a great tour of small town New Jersey, Joe and Nic.
NJ is quite abundant of agriculture🤗🌷❤️
Because the majority of working-class folks in the rest of the State could NEVER afford the multi, multi million dollar pricetags of THOSE places.
me too, I'm never moving out of my NJ, I go on vacation visiting many states but I'm always happy and get wait to get back home.
Agreed. Even here in SJ the homes Fn expensive. I’ve been looking for a few years and it’s brutal. Our twdes and insurance are high too. But if you want to go to Philly, MdmD, the jersey shore , Poconos all with a few hours at the most-South Jersey is great,
Love your videos, Joe!! You have the ability to make one feel as if is actually riding or walking with you.
Thanks Ryan. That's exactly what I'm trying to do. :)
That place was amazing.
That's why I always retract my mirrors when I go over that bridge!

I've never really given any thought to the small towns there! I have to remind myself that there are obviously some rural areas everywhere. Frenchtown looks almost like a quaint small town in New England. Very charming!

I was wondering if you were coming here when I saw you posted in Pennsylvania. I’ve been watching your videos for a few months and I love them.

Wow! We might have been neighbors.
Thanks, Michael. :)
I love the history, the stats and all the info on these towns- it makes me feel I,ve visited there. Now, I probably know more about the USA than I do about OZ, but we dont have a lot of OLD HISTORY/buildings like you do. The painting makes the Delaware crossing look so brutal when they crossed it, it looks to be less than a mile across...
That bridge isn't even a quarter mile. I cross it all the time. The river probably was slightly wider in the 1700s.
