Rescued Seal Remembers Rescuers?

  • It's hard to tell if this female seal really remembered us when we recaptured her to follow up on her healing progress - but once she was allowed out of the rescue net, after Naude had checked up on her, she totally relaxed and "posed" in front of the rescuers, as if she was showing off her old entanglement scar. Maybe she remembered that we helped her, and that we are no threat to her.
    Recaptures are very important for Ocean Conservation Namibia, they are the best proof that rescues work, especially when we get our hands on a seal like this. She clearly had a very deep entanglement, and there is no sign of injury left, she is strong and healthy and simply beautiful. 🦭

      @@rodenreyes6320 Sorry, the cutting of these entanglements really are necessary. Because in many cases, they are inhibiting the seals' ability to move and feed. Sometimes, the fishing lines and hooks and plastics
      are wrapped around the mouth , jaw or upper chest . How are the OCN team members supposed to pry open a seal's mouth to force feed a fish ? If a seal is in " fight or flight mode " from stress, they are not going to want to eat. Also, the OCN team member, could sustain an injury or infection or amputation of a finger (s). These seals are not dogs or animals being trained with positive reinforcement

    • @leshyaedawnfire
      @leshyaedawnfire 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@rodenreyes6320 Sadly that wouldn't have worked. For one thing, the seals are wild and view humans as a potential predator, so they are in fight or flight mode the second you get too close. For another, it is actually illegal to feed most large wildlife, as we don't want them to become habituated to us.

    I know a man who gives sanctuary to hunted boars near his cottage in the woods. Sometimes he provides the only food source to those who were shot but survived and need time to heal. You'd think the boars are goners, surely they will later trust the wrong human and get shot. Not so. They know exactly who is who in the forest and recognise the man by sight and smell, they even know his car. It's indeed possible that the seal recognizes the team.
