@ZippedBlue lol I always hear that in his growly voice. I will say that I’m not having a problem much anymore BUT I had to tackle it different angles - new feeders, pavers, bird netting, etc.
I had to go to a similar feeding system. Also, thanks for sharing your South Texas chicken raising experiences. I'm down here as well. Your videos keep me and my chickens in check. ❤
I had sparrows eating my feed coming into the coop. I got a Grandpa’s Feeder. It was not cheap but paid for itself on several months. The chickens have to step on the treadle to open the feeder. All metal. It took several weeks to do the training guide but did it take long for them to learn to step on treadle. I got the regular size and it holds over 10 pounds of feed. There are other brands but cheap knockoffs.
The game camera is a great idea. I’ve got possums and raccoons pilfering the feed and trashing the drinker. I’m live trapping them and rehoming them in a wild land area.
My chicken coop had a hawk attack three days ago. Chickens are fine because their coop is really secure but they are just SO spooked by it. they refuse to come out into their run. They basically spend the entire day in the hen house for the last three days now. Have you experienced this? I try to coax them out and they do come out but they don’t spend much time outside and I can tell they’re still being extremely alert and cautious. Do you have any idea how long they’ll stay spooked like this?
Oh no. I’m so sorry that happened but I’m so glad that you didn’t lose anyone! I would hope that within a week they will start venturing out again. You can try to tempt them out with treats and things to forage through, and if you’re able to hang out there with them that’ll help too. ✌🏻❤️🐓
I had that happen and two of my birds stayed scared for weeks, First I made sure they have lots of places to hide and cover, this could be small shelters every 20 feet , a few lean to's, I turned my wheel barrow upside down and held the side up with bricks so they can run underneath, I moved a side table out there for a while anything you can think of that they can hide under. This next tip is a weird one but I gave them herbs, I gave them herbal tea Lavender and Chamomile HERBAL TEA(no caffeine just flowers), then I got them the RELAX™ treats and dressed their food with it and gave them tea in their waterers. Them calmed down and stopped jumping for everything but it lasted long because they all started molting soon after the attack. I also used Rescue Remedy™ after the attack, it got ahold of my Livvey girl through the wire. So she took it hard and recovered, Show them all the hiding spots so they can run from spot to spot and they will stay around the hiding spots and peck around.
The wonderful land of rats and mice. Had one of my chickens ate by a hoard of rats. That’s what we deal with in the country when they don’t bush hog around you!
What kind of chicken is in the middle of the screen at 1:02? Beautiful!! _ I'm having a big problem with Sparrows coming in and out all day eating my chicken food. I even have a net over the top of the coop and run area, and those lil buggers still find ways to come in and get out. Thats during the day!!! Night time, after the chickens go to bed I have another problem. I have caught them on camera and their beady little eyes glowing in the darkness and that is MICE!!!! The coop sits up against our Garage and thats where the mice hangout during the day, so Ill have to set up traps again.
I have heard that chickens attract mice and rats. What is going on next door that is attracting them there? I have cats and dogs that manage the problem for me, I do pick up the food and water and rake up daily. I have a list of diseases including RA and Ankylosing Spondylitis, so between my and my partner it is so much work but my chickens are too close to my house to let it go.. looking for a solution because because I can't let my cats out when it is dark especially in the winter when it gets dark at 5 😂 Thanks for the video your hens are gorgeous!
Hi! Neighbor is a hoarder and has a huge junk pile, and multiple derelict sheds, in his backyard. There was a rat nest there before we moved in unfortunately.
@@realsimplemamaoh no!!! That is awful! Neighbors! They can make life hard. I'm sorry about that, I really thought they had chickens too and might be a careless feeder or something. I don't have bad neighbors but I have cow farms! That means hawks! Hawks black head vultures,. And other ground predators but the hawks flock in like crows it is bad! Good luck with the feeders and pavers I will try the feeders.
I use Grandpa’s Feeder. It’s awesome and prevents rodents from coming in and eating the feed. I live in the high desert portion of socal.
Ooh thanks! I’ll check those out!
I saw your post after I posted that I use Grandpa’s Feeder too. The best.
Do you get roaches, ants, flies in your grandpa's feeder ... how about the food getting humid ?
I bring feed in every night.
Same, it sucks but mice and rats suck more. In the words of Mad Eye Moody (and Real Simple Mama) “Constant Vigilance!”

I ended up getting treadle feeders from rent a coop. It’s rats or mice. I was watching them on the cameras at night having food orgies.
Yes I know what you mean. It’s so frustrating!

Hey hey! Thanks so much neighbor! ✌🏻❤️🐓

Ooooh
I had to cement my pavers in. I would come out 2 pavers.

Oh! And the chicken you asked about is a type of Easter Egger. Her name is Fennec Shan. 😎
@@realsimplemama Her feather pattern is just gorgeous.
