The first ultrasound experiments date back to the 1940's in the US, but the first practical ultrasound device was developed in Australia and went on sale in 1961. So yes, sonograms were definitely a thing in her day.

@@artistjoh Gender identification wasn't possible until the 70s... so sonograms may have been available, but they were rudimentary at best and unable to show gender.

@@RAD6150 That may or may not be true, but irrelevant to the comments pointing out that the original commenter was incorrect in saying there were NO ultrasounds in Evelyn's day. There were, whatever they could or could not reveal.
However I should point out, as someone around back then, from the very first time I ever heard of sonograms it was in relation to sexing babies. From memory, rather than not being able to gender identify, they simply couldn't in every case, and that at first it could only identify if it was a boy, but only if the baby was in the right position etc. So a failure to identify meant that it was either a girl, or a boy where the relevant detail could not be seen.
It is true that it is only in the 70's that resolution had improved to the point where sexing babies was more certain, but prior to that, while less reliable, sexing babies was already being done. As far as the general public was concerned, sexing babies was the only thing about sonograms that really interested them.

The sonogram showed no discernible penis whatsoever!! Evelyn is savage, but funny as heck. This actually happened to my cousin, she thought she was having a girl, because her sonogram never showed a penis, until the last month. Guess it happens
