    Very helpful, bu I think the access fee should be 4050. 90 x 90 x 1/2 = 4050, not 2450. Either that or I'm taking crazy pills.

    How is the total revenue (per consumer) calculated? My guess would be Q*P+(Access fee) but I'm not sure.

    • @Goggez
      @Goggez 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And the profit would be (P-C)*Q+Access fee, which then should equal to the Acess fee since the three first terms equal to zero.

    So, each consumer is charged $4,050? No, correct? The access fee is then divided by the number of consumers, correct?

    • @brandynmurillo7402
      @brandynmurillo7402 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming we wanted to solve for the access fee per consumer. It almost seems to follow logically, but just want to make 100% sure.

    • @EconomicsinManyLessons

      Each consumer is charged $4050; it's assumed that all consumers have the same identical demand.

    why the lump sum price has to be on P=MC instead of charing a per-unit price, so that it can eat up all the consumer surplus?

    • @EconomicsinManyLessons
      @EconomicsinManyLessons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When setting the per-unit price where P=MC, consumers are getting maximum consumer surplus. But by charging an access fee or membership fee equal to the area of consumer surplus, the firm takes it all back in the form of producer surplus.

    Thank you it was very helpful, but i have a question is this price strategy the same as the two-tier pricing?

    • @EconomicsinManyLessons
      @EconomicsinManyLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have seen two-tier pricing refer to a way to regulate a natural monopoly by allowing it to charge some customers a high price and others a low price. The high price customers subsidize the low price customers.

    I struggle to accept the underlying logic here. You're trying to say that at the price of 10 per unit the customers would buy 90 units. And if they have to pay additional 4500 of fee on top, their buying behaviour will remain unchanged! As if the extra 4k meant nothing to them

  • @ari5200
    @ari5200 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    why would there be a consumer surplus if they have to pay an access fee??

    • @EconomicsinManyLessons
      @EconomicsinManyLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no consumer surplus. I was trying to show that the firm charges an access fee equal to consumer surplus, leaving consumers with zero consumer surplus.

  • @MrLoesoe
    @MrLoesoe 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Shouldn't it be MR=MC (profit maximization) instead of P=MC? P=MC would be correct for a perfectly competitive firm, but for a monopolist it should be MR=MC.

    • @1mbA4ever
      @1mbA4ever 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +MrLoesoe That's exactly the difference between a 2-part-tariff pricing and a linear pricing model. By setting the variable price to your marginal costs, you will guarantee maximal output of produce. With the "access fee" you will ensure getting all the pension in this trade.

    • @stephenvaz3180
      @stephenvaz3180 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MR = D in price conspiracy model because they dont need to discount the previous products as well
      so yes MC= MR but since MR = demand, MC = P

    I understand how to calculate the access fee, but I must say I don't understand what it is exactly, and how it works.

    • @EconomicsinManyLessons
      @EconomicsinManyLessons  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can think of an access fee as a membership fee or entrance fee. A consumer must first pay the access fee before she can buy the firm's product. Costco and Sam's Club have an access fee. Some amusement parks have an access fee and then charge per ride. Some golf courses have a membership fee then charge per round of golf.

      IAmProof ThatGreatnessCanBeEncapsulatedInOneFormWhichIndeedTakesTheAppearance OfAGreekAdonis The horizontal or constant marginal cost is just a simplifying assumption, making the graph a little easier to read and it makes the math easier, too.

    • @ThatWookieGuy

      Thank you. I was just wondering in a question though...if I had a MC function like
      a)MC = $300 + 0.002Q
      b) MC = $1500
      Of course, both MC curves derived from differentiating Total Cost. a) would apply to a more common MC curse (increasing MC, upwards sloping, eg. production etc......). And b) would be more relevant to two part pricing question/service like a membership fee, then price = MC.
      In question in book, it states: each fifth wheel trailer costs the company $10,000 in variable labor and material expenses (MC).
      If you could help me, hope I made question clear, I'd so appreciate it.
