This was quite the adventure - a tale of stress, late nights, success, and failures. Guess that’s what happens when it’s holiday season and a rush order comes in! We had to make 80 concrete coasters for West Elm and we learned a lot about making master models and silicone molds along the way. Hopefully this video is not just a concrete how to but also a mold making how to.
The Precision Board Plus was an AWESOME material to work with. It’s a high density urethane foam but it feels like stone and has a smooth sandable, non-porous surface. It carved like a breeze on our X-Carve. However, we didn’t know until it was too late that the silicone type we got, Mold Star 15, was incompatible with urethane. Automotive primer to the rescue! We use this stuff to smooth out 3D prints all the time but it also made a great barrier between the urethane and the silicone!
Once we got to actually mixing the concrete, that was the easy part! Here are some tips you can use for any DIY concrete project: start with less water than you think - a little goes a long way! Agitate your molds to remove concrete bubbles - you can shimmy and shake em or put a sander next to them to vibrate them. They can be removed before fully cured, but they need to cure before you paint them!
Hope you can apply some of the tips in the video if you’re working on silicone molds, diy concrete projects, or have any concrete how to projects ahead of you!

What I really love about this video is that you show the complete process of you achieving a product. Along with all the mistakes and things you learned. That is what fascinates me about making things - the process. You start with a plan, gather materials, fail, reiterate, build, fail, plan again, gather different materials, fail, start over, contemplate your decisions in life, and in the end you have a product you can be proud of! Love it! Love your videos!

    • @EvanAndKatelyn

Haha! That contemplating decisions in life is a crucial step. "why did we think we could make so many dang coasters?!?" Thank you! We always love sharing the full process, and it's often a windy one!

Something I’ve found helpful when casting concrete in molds like this is to put them on a wobbly table and attach vibrating back massagers to the table, it helps get the bubbles out and you can just fill and forget until dry.

Things that will also help in the future.
Use a transfer cup wgen mixing your silicone. And keep the transfer cup around so you can check the silicone in the transfer cup to see if it's cured before disturbing your mold. Sadly platinum silicone is very finicky (but still great for its own purpose)
Also silicone doesnt cure when contaminated with LATEX as well. So dont hard coat master molds with latex! A nice epoxy hard coat will do just fine.
Also, silicone cures faster with humidity. So keep a humidifier close to the silicone. And i advise using purified nursery water in the humidifier to ensure nothing will contaminate the silicone through humidity. Youll be surprised how quickly your silicone sets.
    **for mold repair**
So not buy silpoxy to repair molds. Its a waste of money. Its basically the GE brand silicone1 caulking you pick up at home depot. But its two part and costs 50$ instead of 5$. The cheap silicone patch work i did on a complex platinum silicone matrix mold survived 10 more castings.
If you have any questions about epoxy and polyester resins (for casting, lamination. Auto body filler a.k a. Bondo, syntactic dough a.k.a. free form air, epoxy clay),
Clays (monster clay, chavant, WED and waterclay) and silicones (tin or platinum for molding, casting, painting, and sculpting out of silicone)
It is my full time job to handle and understand these products and make quality products that last.
I love your guys' channel and would be so happy to help!

    Concrete tips if you’re interested.
Measure your ingredients with a scale including your water. This will give you greater consistency and cut waist down to near zero as you get it dialled in.
Use a mechanical mixer. A drill would be better but a countertop kitchen mixer would be the best. When your mud looks mixed it’s really not. If you put it into a mixer and let it run for 10 - 15 minutes straight the water will be evenly distributed throughout. Some commercial ready mix companies plot longer drives to the job to allow for the correct mix time.
Try the same “painting” method with your concrete. Mix a small amount of a face coat wetter (use a plasticizer) with less coarse aggregate (sift dry mix) and paint it on. As soon as it gets tacky dump the rest in.

this reminds me of when a friend was trying to make a bunch of gems for steven universe cosplayers. she made the gem plates out of resin but they were too thick. she thought if she angled the facets that it could start to cure as she poured in more. she had to abandon the part of putting led's behind them. and just 3D printed them. but she had to do twice as much work sanding them to get rid of the lines. I wonder how much primer and a different mold would have helped her out.

This is great! I’ve heard palm sanders without the sandpaper work really well for degassing concrete. I’d really love to see a video on how to make a DIY vibrating table. Probably would make your lives easier since you’re casting so many coasters! I need to make one to agitate plaster molds I’ll be casting in silicone master molds, just like you’re doing!

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes we used a sander without paper here (you just couldn't really see it because Evan was standing in front). Definitely considering doing a vibrating table - though honestly getting the bubbles out has never been a huge issue for us!

You can buy a small vibrator motor from mac master and attach it to a small platform and you can use it as a sort of "debubbling" station when you pour each one instead of tapping it. Or make a vaccum chamber.

When applying spray primer - use a small brush to work the primer into spots that are hard to hit, and move around the excess into the thinner areas. The resulting smooth surface should help with your molds. Thanks!
