      In Las Vegas there were always a whole bunch of street performers. I always stopped and watched. And if they were trying hard and were actually pretty good, I always threw a dollar to them. Or, I’ve bought bottles of cold water from one, and even paid $10.00 for a cd a guitarist had made. He was really good!! Brought it home to my hubby and he really liked it. I always had some money put back for street performers.

The guy is amazing and has great technique, it's just too much for me. It's like the old Amiga tech demos. Flashy but not really any deep substance. There are various answers to this invisibility.
      1) Most people are so self-centred these days they get offended by someone else’s talent. I actually get verbally abused while playing, told to shut up, fuc off, even when playing quietly. I’d make more money if I stood there taking selfies, because that’s the level of talent most people can identify with.
      2) People have no concept of what a musician is any more and the amount of work it takes to be one. I’ve had stunned kids take pictures of me and tell me they are doing a report on me at school because they have never seen a live musician before.
      3) Guitar is no longer played on the radio or used in songs so they have no concept of what guitar is.
      4) guitar solos are completely out of fashion for the last 20 years and mean nothing to mostly everyone under the age of 50. It’s dinosaur music played on a dinosaur instrument. It’s not rap or hip hop, so their lizard brains can’t process what I’m doing.
      5) Music is an over abundant commodity that is now mostly free and has no value.
      6) Context. I’m seen by most people as a homeless beggar/bum so they see no value in what I’m doing, and are in fact actively trying to avoid me. Nothing scares people more than being near what they see as a ‘poor street person’.
      7) stopping or appreciating means being forced to think about leaving a tip, which makes most people uncomfortable.
      8) I’m not a cute 10-year-old. I’ve seen talentless busking kids. They make way more money because they’re cute. No one gives a shit about an old man, no matter how good he is.
      9) It’s an arts hating city full of angry apathetic zombies who can’t afford to live here because of number 10. Vancouver is infamous for being the most antisocial shithole in Canada, if not the world.
      10) Worst audience I’ve ever seen, and I’ve played everywhere. Full of condo flipping foreign investment aholes (one of them used to be my friend) that will bury a historic music venue if it makes them a buck, and their kids, students that buy mansions to launder money from their parents who don’t even live here. This causes an ever spiralling lack of affordable living space for locals, raising anger at a geometric rate. I’ve lived here for 35 years and it is a shell of what it once was in the early 80’s. Huge homeless problem. Huge drug problems. Huge divide between the rich and poor. Huge amounts of money being laundered and the politicians don’t give a shit about the people that actually live here. They tried to fix real estate abuse loopholes five years ago but that was 30 years too late. The damage is already done. Average lifespan of someone who moves here is six months to a year before they get disgusted and move away again. Huge transient population running on a tourist economy. Vancouver produces nothing of value and likes to think of itself as a major international city when in fact it’s just a sad village that doesn’t even know how to recycle plastic. I’m in the same apartment for 16 years and can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve had a conversation with any of my neighbors, because most of them don’t live here long enough to even get to meet them.

    To the guys commenting on how everyone ignores him... Busking is pretty much like that, occasionally you'll have a group of people that stop to watch a few songs, but mostly people just pass by without a quick glance. I think people try to avoid looking at you for fear they'll have to give you money, so they just stare straight ahead and try their best to ignore. I've even had my stuff (guitar casing for money and sign) be trampled once or twice by people who were really intent on pretending I wasn't there. Ever since I first went out to play on the streets I've gained a lot of appreciation for street artists and begun giving out more money, because I know how happy we feel when we receive it. And the children are the absolute best, they can't stop themselves from getting close and being awestruck at your music, made my days constantly. Wish Covid would end soon to go back to the streets!

    • @shatnershairpiece
      @shatnershairpiece  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. people are afraid to look. they will even stare down the street looking for the bus instead of turning the other direction and looking at me. i’ve had joggers run into me, Drunks that shoulder check me, people step on my bag, ride over it with bikes or wheelchair. kids are definitely the best. The problem is the parents often will drag them away just while the kid is trying to enjoy it. I absolutely hate that.
