I agree with everything except the dark trim. It really depends on the design style one is shooting for. Modern, airy, light... sure no dark trim needed. But for a more traditional style or in historical houses, its absolutely fine to accent those elaborate trims with a little bit of a contrast. It really depends on the type of color/wood used. I am always a sucker for mahogany, and it can only be pried from my cold dead hands :D

that's the thing about Trends, sometimes you find your Style in a Trend and are happy to live with the 'weird green stone countertops' , or that 70's look paneled basement playroom with happy hippy orange furniture and hanging plants. Girl You Know it's All About Style, we find our Style, it's our Life Style. ! Bigg Huggs !!
I like a light room, and a dark ceiling makes the whole room dark. I can't imagine painting everything black! I do like natural wood trim and cabinetry, and if you cover it with paint to follow the style of the moment, it's so hard to remove! If you're wealthy enough to re-do your rooms frequently to be trendy, go for it, but most of us have to live with our decor for years, so I advocate subtle, light colors that go with anything. You can buy (and discard) bold accent items to bring character to your rooms.
I get that it can shorten visually, but I have to say that I really like the look of real wood color on trims, especially on historic homes, so I don't feel like it shortens the length visually, at least not for me. I like mauve but I am not into anything pink at the moment so I will only admire it on pictures for now, besides I come from the era of pink in the 80's and I already had my share of that color back then. I love anything 70's so bring it on. Another thing that is coming into people's consciences big time now is practicing sustainability in decor among other areas of daily life.
Wood trim that is a dark tone is a classic and beautiful detail for traditional homes, but for anything other than that, it's not as successful a solution, I totally agree with you!
@@LisaHoltDesign You did post, in this video. natural wood trims as your examples of what not to do "color painted trims" so it is a bit confusing. Perhaps you should do a must do "trim molding show" as to what colors you think are fabulous, timeless and not trendy.
Thank you thank you thank you for putting the "stop" sign on 70s retro. I was born in 1963, so my childhood is literally defined by the 1970s. Aside from a few films, Jaclyn Smith, and the Bicentennial celebration, there was nothing beautiful about the 1970s, and there's certainly nothing about suburban home decor from that error that should ever be revived. I still have nightmares about wagon wheel chandeliers, macrame owls, and harvest gold refrigerators. Make it all go away!
2:20 I wouldn’t paint my Vic‘s dark wood woodwork and it may cut up the rooms, but I find that warm tone necessary in this type of house. In a modern house- no.
Hi lisa! The farm house I grew up in had dark wood trim. I hated it but my mom loved dark wood and wouldn't allow any wood that wasn't. Even when they built their dream home around 12 years ago they still went with a somewhat dark wood. Thankfully I can banish dark wood from my own home. 🙂 My least favorite trend is kitchens with multiple islands.
Our first house was built in 1924 and had wonderful rich mahogany woodwork on the windows, doors and, archway. I loved the lovely dark wood. I hate the cheap looking all white trim in our current 2000 house. It has no personality at all.
Thank you Lisa! Great video. My husband & I watched together. He loves brown, tan/beige, khaki everything. Adding dimension just not his style. He also only lets us have vertical and horizontal blinds 😮 window coverings because “they are practical”. Hoping the more we watch your channel the more inspired we will get. Thank you again!
Thank you, Lisa! I HATE that mauve/dead brown color, LOL, and it is everywhere. I mean...its the flesh colored crayon in the box that is never used! Just NO...thanks.
So impressed by the Dezign Club. So helpful. Not like other clubs. Just like Lisa isn’t like other designers. There’s a reason she’s an award winner. So impressed by everything I’ve seen her help create. She isn’t stuck in one design type.
I went to high school and college in the 70s, and I agree. The 70s were the ugliest years in fashion and home decor. In my opinion, there is no way to take something from the 70s and make it look good. Friendships and music are the only things worth keeping from the 70s.
6:17 I had that same fireplace stone in my 1970s built home and I got rid of it!!! It was much too harsh and heavy. I admit it was no easy task for the guys that took it out, but the room instantly got an update!
I GULPED the second you said dark ceilings because I JUST painted my whole bedroom a very dark green(black evergreen by Behr)- including the ceiling! With dark curtains as well, it's soooo cozy. I freakin love it. I wanted to paint but had to blend in the popcorn ceiling with the walls. I'm so happy with it.
There is nothing more beautiful than natural wood tones against a white, med toned or light colored wall, IMO in an old house. Even so, good video- thank you!
I agree with a lot of this. However, dark stained trim in old houses can be really beautiful. Brownstones, for example, can have lovely original dark stained trim, when paired with white walls (not yellow undertone white) it really makes it pop and look sophisticated. If paired with beige or yellow undertone white, it can read more dull and like a stuffy library. I also think it's important that the crown moulding in these houses be painted white so as to not cut off the ceiling. Unless the whole ceiling is also dark wood coffered. I wish I could post a picture.
Finally, someone that makes sense regarding trends and decor, agree with you 100% on Everything, I see some designers telling us to paint our ceilings darker, they say that heavy vein marbles are very much "in" and will never go out of style because they are a natural stone and yes, the 70 furniture, no thanks, my kitchen was done 14 years ago, a white kitchen with black quartz countertops and soft shades of white and grey marble in the backsplash, still looks good today as it did when it was done...walls Benjamim Moore White Wisp with chantilly lace trimming, white couches and the colours come form big art work, chocolate velvet cushions and throws ( for winter ), plants, well, I say it's just common sense and what I like but your revue of the 2023 Pantone color is spot on...horrible, mix the horrible stomach medicine with some brown and you get the mauve for 2023...lol...thanks for all your great videos, common sense and saving money to all of us who don't follow all the trends...I love, love light woods, scandi style, pot belly Swedish clocks, I would love to see more of that, cheerful and light decor.
I totally agree with everything that woman is saying. That's a first for me as it comes to design. I like her vibe also. Plus... she's not blabbering or repeating herself.
Agree with all of your tips! No no no to the throwback 70s. Loved it once, no need to go back. Lol! And colored marble? Ick! Thanks for all your great tips. Love your channel! Keep up the great work!! 👍👏
Hello Lisa! Yup. I agree. Leave the 70's in the 70's! Didn't love it the first time around. I'm thinking of going with a soft purply mauve in my bedroom. It's called "hint of violet " by Benjamin Moore. And I've been thinking of a silver ( call me crazy) for my closet ceiling? Yes? No? Whadayathink?
100% agree with the discussion about mauve. Why is it so brown toned? It's like people can't decide if they want color or want a neutral tone. If you want color, commit! It will look so much better.
I used to like colored marble, but when i did my bathroom, i opted for Italian carrera and calcutta marble. When i did my kitchen with dark brown cabinets (black walnut) with a light grey marble floor, I chose indian juparana granite for counters to give some life. that granite is a sandy pinkish with lots of grey and black with irregular horizontal veins and curvy veins. It looks great, and I decided to place it on the entire backsplash, and I think that was the key.
Love all your tips! I spent lots of time at my cousin’s house growing up . There was a mauve bathroom …disaster 😂. I love the dezign club and the zoom Q and A’s.
Speaking as someone who came of age in the 1970's there are a few things that are still fabulous: Peter Max prints & fabrics; Andy Warhol prints , especially Mao, Jagger, and Sunset (if they're excellent quality reproductions); Italian minimalist leather sofas; birdcage or papasan chairs on the patio (not the living room!) with botanical print cushions; lots & lots of indoor plants (e.g. an entire widow covered with a glass etagere or glass shelves full of potted plants in a riot of varieties; etc. Of course there is a lot of tacky (I hated harvest gold & avocado at the time!)
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!! I don't know if you already have one, but I would like to lern more about the right choice for DOORS and WINDOWS. Size, materials, and mechanisms. Thanks for sharing all your knowlage.
I agree partly with the mauve complains, BUT try mauve as a pastell, almost white. Its crazy! In the daylight it shows its slightly blue lavendertone, at night with lamps - it becomes warm. Also it could connect to cool and warm furniture colors. In a light version, perfectly mixed, its a magic thing.
Hi Lisa! We haven't upgraded our kitchen countertops yet, but what do you think about the marbles that are mostly white? Would you stay away from that look completely, or just colored ones?
5:30 Last year, I picked a lovely lavender-leaning mauve for my bedroom called Emerging Taupe from Sherwin Williams. On the paint chip it looks like a pastel tan, but it turns out more purple than you expect on a full wall. The purple tones also cool it down and keep it from feeling "fleshy". It's also turned out to be quite a refreshing neutral color that pairs well with other pastels, darker saturated colors, most metals, and light to medium wood. Overall, a very pleasant base color for a dreamy, subtly femme vibe.
NO MAUVE, EVARRRRR! Gads, it's like stepping back into the 80s (Were you even alive, yet, Lisa?). Mauve painted walls, matching bed linens and black 'lacquer' furniture (With a nice strip of metallic gold inserted somewhere across its surface. I don't think I'm going to sleep, tonight.
When I was a kid in the 70s, I thought the Brady Bunch house was super cool. I Googled some images just now, and I think it holds up. But I draw the line at bringing back avocado green or harvest gold kitchen appliances.
I technically agree about the dark ceiling...but also can attest to making the walls dark too. My son's room is deep midnight blue everywhere and he loves it. It feels cozy and comforting to him.
"Absolutley very beautifull!" - that phrasing said it all about the over the top all-marble bathroom trend. I wonder when is this trend going to hit demolishion and disposal hell!
I am SO HAPPY to find you ...back again on TH-cam!!! Thank you thank you thank you so much Ms Lisa!!! OMG, It was hilarious....and so true, those trends are scary , are they not!!! Thank you for pointing them out (and out they go!!!). I never understood the dark ceilings or....the painting trims; it makes me wince ... Ms Lisa! You made my....month! helene
I have shorter than 8 foot ceilings, and the white ceiling made me feel like I was in a shoebox. Painted the ceiling deep midnight blue, and now it looks like infinite space overhead! But what really makes it work to make the room feel taller is that I brought the wall color (a sort of golden sand), a foot into the ceiling all around.
I have to disagree along with others on the dark trim. I had a Victorian home with original woodwork and pocket doors. Lovely stairs, wood floors all original. There is no way I was painting over the stain. For a period look, you need a period nook.😊
I have been loving your channel, but do you have videos for designing small homes where laundry is combined with bathrooms? Also, unconventional kitchen layouts? We are pre-planning to convert our small house to make more room for storage and style. Plus we love lots of windows to brighten interior with low ceilings. Thank you!
Agreed, I bought a house and most of the trim is painted in white enamel which yellows quickly and even though white trim looks fine when you see what the original trim looked like when you enter the living room it breaks my heart. It's so gorgeous and rich. Painted trim is a lot of maintenance and what do you do when you paint the trim to match the walls? Every room has different colored trim? Sounds like a lot of maintenance.
@@LisaMarie-br8tn I do not like painted trim because of the maintenance. Dust and dirt get embedded in painted trim and no matter how much one cleans and scrubs, pretty soon the paint brush has to come out. Stained trim may be more expensive to install initially but the maintenance is minimal.
Some mauve rooms I've seen came across flat & I like the idea of weaving in 70s elements. Some top to bottom 70s rooms - the wood walls ! 😫- are frightening
For real I have 24 foot ceilings in the master and it sucks. It's like sleeping in an airport. Maybe I should paint the whole room and ceiling darker. It's beige now.
Agree but I will push back in the painted ceilings. If your trying to create a very cozy space and have very high ceilings it's a great way to bring them down. Though I greatly dislike the 2 story ceiling living rooms. It's just such a waste of space.
As someone who has been around to see these trends the first time around, nope. Had a mauve bedroom back in the nineties. It had to go. I heard a younger person talk about making a bourbon bar out of a bourbon barrel. Flashbacks to those hideous Sears dining room barrel sets. Dark trim only looks right in certain spaces. My first house had a fake green marble Formica countertop in the kitchen. Totally agree with the colored marble. Those seventies rooms only look good in a staged way. Outside that, they are awful. Might as well bring back swag lighting.
Okay but the mauve is so pretty 😍 I mean it's preference right? And when you get sick of your accent wall in a few years, you can always paint over it. 🤷🏼♀️

Yay! Thank you so much, Teri! ❤️
GREAT VIDEO! Thanks, Lisa❤️.
Yay Lois! Thanks for watching!
Indeed there are many 70's jewels. I am an odd ball as I love avocado green and harvest gold.
Totally agree! The 70s you have to pick and choose!
Love Peter Max
@@vaderladyl you would love my kitchen 😁
So good! Thanks for the hard work!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My sis and I refer to the 70’s as our “taste free” decade.
"Deth fleshy mauve!" Love your phrasing! It is exactly as berry baby food in a jar...it makes your skin look dead.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!
I don't know if you already have one, but I would like to lern more about the right choice for DOORS and WINDOWS.
Size, materials, and mechanisms.
Thanks for sharing all your knowlage.
Oh, we have LOTS of resources at thedezignclub.com!
I agree partly with the mauve complains, BUT try mauve as a pastell, almost white. Its crazy! In the daylight it shows its slightly blue lavendertone, at night with lamps - it becomes warm. Also it could connect to cool and warm furniture colors. In a light version, perfectly mixed, its a magic thing.
nice tip ☺️
I agree 👍🏼
A voice of experience and wisdom - you clearly know your stuff. Good choices, great info and explanation!
Yay! Thank you so much, Bertie! ❤️
Hi Lisa! We haven't upgraded our kitchen countertops yet, but what do you think about the marbles that are mostly white? Would you stay away from that look completely, or just colored ones?
Interesting question! Please shoot me a message at thedezignclub.com!
Thank-you!!!
SOUNDS DREAMY, Emily!!
Agree 💯💯And.. I don’t even like the dark wall accent unless you have a hugeeee space! Too dark !
Agreed! 😆
Amen Sista! LOL
I technically agree about the dark ceiling...but also can attest to making the walls dark too. My son's room is deep midnight blue everywhere and he loves it. It feels cozy and comforting to him.
Super happy for your son!
Agree with the 70s! I was a teenager then. The music was great but the decor was horrendous!
Totally loved the music, but the Decour stunk! :-) Face
Great content, Thank you! Agree 💯 with all you said. Those 'fugly' shades of mauve look like 'Silly Putty' to me; absolute yuck!😝
Exactly!!
"dead fleshy" !!!! Perfect description!
You are so right about the 5! Gadzooks!😝😖
Excellent advice! In a sea of endless takes on interior design, yours is wise and meant to last through storms. Ugly 70s storms.
Aww! Thank you so much, Hera! ❤️
"Absolutley very beautifull!" - that phrasing said it all about the over the top all-marble bathroom trend. I wonder when is this trend going to hit demolishion and disposal hell!
The root of many a design problem: it's not that the element itself is that bad, it's just that there's So. Much. Of it!
I love these videos!! You are so cute the way you talk about what works & doesn’t! Thank you!
Yay! Thank you so much, Debbie! ❤️
Ms Lisa! You made my....month!
helene
Yay! Thank you so much, Peter! ❤️
The trim you show is natural wood. Always a plus in my book.
Depends on the style. ☺️
Laughingly agree w the 70s reprise!!! It was Not Good the first time.
I agree 100% with these choices! When I saw SW's Color of the Year for 2023, I threw up a little.
Love your videos!
Glad you like them!
I have to disagree along with others on the dark trim. I had a Victorian home with original woodwork and pocket doors. Lovely stairs, wood floors all original. There is no way I was painting over the stain. For a period look, you need a period nook.😊
Oh my gosh! This made my evening! I laughed through the entire video, HAHAHA! Thank you!
LOL! Glad you enjoyed it!
I love orange and avocado green. I love green.
Great video! WISH the people who owned our house before we bought it had watched this video! All our ceilings are dark brown!!! Can’t wait to paint!
SUPER EXCITED for you, Abby! Share the pics after! ❤️
I love your tips! I started watching you during the time we rebuilt our kitchen after water damage in 2021. Lisa, you were such a great help to me!
OMG, Linda! You should join us at thedezignclub.com!
I have been loving your channel, but do you have videos for designing small homes where laundry is combined with bathrooms? Also, unconventional kitchen layouts? We are pre-planning to convert our small house to make more room for storage and style. Plus we love lots of windows to brighten interior with low ceilings. Thank you!
Great ideas! I will take note of these!!
Great video as always and I agree wholeheartedly with your list. I die a little each time I see 70s decor lol 😂
That first 70's photo reminded me of Peewee's Playhouse! 😬
And I thrive with it. Love my 70's.
I'm not painting my wood stained trim!
I totally agree!
Yay! I have none of these!
For real I have 24 foot ceilings in the master and it sucks. It's like sleeping in an airport. Maybe I should paint the whole room and ceiling darker. It's beige now.
Lol! My mother would possibly have said that mauve is like quinine! Lol
Agree but I will push back in the painted ceilings. If your trying to create a very cozy space and have very high ceilings it's a great way to bring them down. Though I greatly dislike the 2 story ceiling living rooms. It's just such a waste of space.
You have a great point there, Erica! 👏 - G ❤️
I do like black sliding doors and windows in black. Can really frame a room.
Ooh, that sounds classic too! - G ❤️
2023 better watch out
Hi Lisa! 🌸
Hey there! ❤️
lol on the 70s. I agree on the mauve, it looks 1960 institutional.
Hmm, it's your preference! - G ❤️
