- FINALLY, I had a chance to check out Ren's newest song, 'Illest of Our Time,' and film my FIRST reaction and in-depth analysis and bar by bar breakdown. Once again, Ren delivers (he NEVER misses), with BARS ON BARS ON BARS, packed with multi-ententres and meanings, and the cinematography...well, this is something SPECIAL.
As someone who's fighting some of the same chronic illnesses Ren is (Lyme Disease, MCAS/MCAD, Autoimmunity, Depression, Anxiety) along with several other chronic physical and mental health conditions. This video, while a mental workout in analysis, also helped put to words some of the things I've not been able to, myself.
Ren goes HARD, and I am HERE for ALL of it!

Ren said that the pig has a very specific, personal meaning to him, but he won't tell anyone what it is because he wants everyone to interpret it in their own personal way. So, I guess the secret meaning of the pig is that it has no meaning except the meaning we give it. 🤔 It's like a... Pigcaso. 😂
PIGCASO.😂🤣😂🤣 OH MY GOODNESS. Thank you so much for that laugh, I’m a sucker for puns/cheesiness/corniness. This seriously made me smile so hugely. And I also love that he’s got his own meaning, but that he intentionally hasn’t shared it, it’s just another way he sets himself apart from a lot of artists who do a lot of metaphorical hand-holding with their fans.

I was thinking they might be the individual diagnoses he has, especially since fighting--like a metaphor for the fight they wage in his mind? There are too many for each to represent an individual one, though, unless one might represent the medical PTSD his journey has left him with (the others being Lyme, ME, MCAD, ADHD, Depression, and occasional psychosis plus the Pig)?
Part of me also expects to hear "I didn't have a meaning beyond them being great props that made it fun to keep people guessing"

What a brilliant reaction - I must have watched hundreds of ren reactions now, some focus on the rapping/music technique breakdown and miss some of the emotion, some do the opposite, but what I love about yours is that you do both. You break down the bars but also never lose sight of the emotion and enjoyment of the piece. They filmed this in an old Argos store and homeless people living there was sketchy.
Well worth watching as he is so humble and genuinely grateful for guys blowing up his music reacting. He's all about giving.

I hopped on that stream for a few minutes, but it was after he had that initial overwhelm/breakdown (I saw he posted that clip on IG today, though), and then I had to leave the stream because I didn’t want these lyrics to get spoiled when he was watching some reactions. As far as the hair goes, I definitely have an orange tint to my hair right now, but that’s because I totally need to touch up the dye. I’ve been blonde my whole life (and when my hair started getting to more of a dirty blonde as I got older, I started dying it platinum blonde because it feels more like “me” just because that’s what my whole childhood was), but I had to stop using most dyes like that a decade ago, and the more natural dyes I use tend to have this orange-ish tint if not done perfectly/often enough. But as far as letting it down, the only reason I keep it up like this is because this is how I have it probably 99% of the time, since I have to keep a cold pack on my head 24/7 to just manage head pain that hasn’t left since January 2013. But I really appreciate your reminder that I’m among friends here, this community and fan base is the best. I so appreciate you!💕

@@lillyvanpug (and everyone else on this comment thread) Comments like this are surreal to me; as a fan and student of hip hop for 2+ decades (and a very amateur songwriter and rapper myself who’s never really been able to do much with it, though it helps me deal with life) I’ve watched Knox for years and respect the heck out of him as an artist and as a reactor/analyst. Part of the reason I think I was hesitant to lean into my own analysis and breakdowns/reactions for so long is because I didn’t think I had any business in this lane. Loved your reaction and the breakdown on the lyrics! You are correct that every line is packed with meanings and there are layers of meaning beyond the easy references to Mary Poppins, Robin Hood and Freddy Kreuger/Mercury. For example one might gloss over the phrases "Chest with an iron lung, Extra terrestrial, tentacles, alien, Psychopathic tendencies" but if you imagine an iron body alien with tentacles you might recall the destructive machines in War of the Worlds. If you think that is reaching then compare the sirens in the beginning to the sirens from War of the Worlds and they are almost the same. He is so well read and blends English literature, mythology and modern cultural and media references masterfully. Further the first section begins with 1,2,3 and the machines have 3 legs and a destructive heat ray from a piercing eye. Watson=private eye, cat headed lady = Bastet = Eye of Ra, Bastet has a blue eye to ward off evil. In "Midsummer Nights Dream" Oberon the king instructs Puck(Robin) to pour a love potion into Lysanders eye "Flower of this purple dye, Hit with Cupid’s archery, Sink in apple of his eye’. Ren says "Want to sink into the pupil of my eye". He invites the viewer in as you said as Watson to help him figure things out. "Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind"- Midsummer Night's Dream. Not convinced? When Ren says he is rapstar, Bastet holds up a beer, a Stella Artois. Stella=star. Bastet was tricked into drinking beer and became ill sparing mankind from her wrath. and next line Ren is getting sick. Also, people swallowed mercury to treat syphilis and were sick. "I don't feel so fresh" hints at having a venereal disease. "breeding ground"=area where animals breed and instead of the "The poor get poorer and the rich get richer" Ren says "The poor get poorer while the rich get rich in style". Why? Style = stile: "an arrangement of steps that allows people but not animals to climb over a fence or wall" Ren's lyrics are next level. "it shot right into space".

Wow, I'd missed the War of the Worlds imagery but as soon as you pointed it out - seeing those tentacles reaching into every corner in the room, hunting out with their telescopic eyes into the room, that's an amazing metaphor he has used for exploring his mind. I won't be able to listen to this again without that imagine now. Great catch! And now I've read the rest of your comment re the tapestry (Rapestry? lol) of Shakespeare and mythology etc woven in. I feel frustrated that my knowledge is limited that I miss so much in Ren's work and only recognise the common and obvious - it's thanks to people like you and reactors that I get to learn and see more - thanks for sharing. Iron lung is a ventilator for polio patients. It's a big metal tube and the patient is inside so that only his head sticks outside. In the worst cases of polio your lungs are nearly paralyzed so this machine creates negative pressure that makes your lungs suck in air. They can spend very short amount of time outside for showering etc. Last of these patients have probably passed away from old age.

456... 666 line is from Freddy Krueger , he sings the rhyme in his movies. Freddy K's mother was a catholic nun working at the nut house. Ren was singing from Freddy's perspective.
THANK YOU! Those lines came during the flashing lights section of the video so I didn’t go back to them as much as I otherwise would’ve (and to be completely honest, my OCD latched onto that number in childhood and even thought OCD is a jerk, it’s hard for me to even say or type the number). But hearing this explanation literally put my mind at rest because it was really bugging me not being able to dive into that one adequately. Such an awesome Easter egg there! I was hoping there’d be some people chiming in with some of the references I missed, especially re: horror-related things, because it’s just not my wheelhouse. Today I learned!😁💕

I've always for some reason thought that the pig head is a reference to Lord of the Flies where they mount a pigs head to a stick and then one of the kids starts hallucinating that the head is speaking to him in the voice of a headmaster and telling him that he is crazy. In the book its supposed to represent the devil, and the darkness that lives inside of all people.

I definitely think he has left the direct meaning ambiguous, and I mostly know that because other people have said it in comments, but I’ve also gotten lord of the flies vibes at times, too. I think it’s masterful the sheer number of things that mask he found can symbolize, and I love that he likes hearing everyone’s perspective and not trying to pigeon-hole it into only the meaning he intended. Freddy Krueger(attacks people in their nightmares, because he is dead in the films and kills in the nightmares)

Well you might be "late" to the release party, but damn - you certainly made up for it in your analysis.
I think you have a point with the animal masks and Animal Farm, but there is more meaning to it than that. Ren used to hallucinate nightmarishly about people in masks back when he was most ill. ... If I remember correctly.
And another tidbit is about "Eleven". "Turn it up to eleven" is a quote/idiom from the mockumentary Spinal Tap, about playing metal to the max. And I do love how Ren gets that woven into a Stranger Things reference.

Yes I can only whole heartedly agree with you on Ren's abilities with language in every sense of the word. It's like us normal mortals have great big knitting needles but Ren makes fine woven silk tapestries ;-).

Something that still amazes me about Ren, is that in an interview he said his lyme disease/auto immunity has destroyed his memory so the fact that he can remember the lines of his songs and perform the way he does is amazing.
I agree completely! This is actually something I relate to, as well, because when lime had affected my brain so badly that there were times I couldn’t even remember my own name, much less how to spell or write it out, if I could turn on a beat I was able to rap along. I think a lot of it speaks to the healing power of music, in itself, in addition to everything you said here.💕

Actually, he’s one of a kind, I don’t think anyone is truly like him, but I do have some others who similarly light up my brain when dissecting and analyzing their wordplay. Ren hits hard because of the emotional aspect to sharing some of the same diagnoses and illnesses, and he packs more multi-entendres into bars than anyone I’ve ever seen, except Eminem, and I have a feeling Ren may even surpass that someday (that’s a HUGE compliment coming from me, who’s been a major Stan since 1999). I have my own health issues as well as you and Ren, having had Turbcurculosis, Sepsis, Puemonia, and then type 1 diabetes all in the last 6 years. I've got some other autoimmune issues as well but none that have been diagnosed yet, I'm in limbo like Ren was, but my mobility has really declined. They thought it may be a functional gait disorder or stiff person syndrome. Not looking for sympathy but that is why I can connect with you reacting to Ren, I guess we are in our little circle together. I've watched your other Ren reactions, I cant remember you reacting to him and his band 'The Big Push' live out busking to I shot the sheriff (the video where he is wearing red braces) not emotional but another side to his many skilss. I don't want to give away anything, however a break in between each one would probably be wise. The third one packs a next level seriously, heavy punch straight to the heart, besides that'll keep your audience on their toes for the next one.

You’re always welcome to share anything you feel like sharing as far as what you took away form the song/video, but never any pressure. One of the coolest things about seeing so many people react (and share their comments on others’ videos) is the sheer variety of perspective and interpretations we can take in. I know I try to break down a lot, but I’m also confident I miss quite a bit, too, so I’m always open to hear anyone’s input.

My brother also had Lyme and experienced issues that I could not relate to at the time (late 1990's- early 2000's). Roughly 20 years later, folks like Ren and yourself have allowed me to retrospect, as I am less ignorant of how it can effect the body and mind of an individual.
Fight the good fight, Becca. I hope your channel here is cathartic for you, as Ren's music is for him. From what you have shared with us, it sounds as if you have a lot of support and empathy in your personal life, as well as in our community here. @@steveherman6909 I can tell you’re a compassionate soul and just want to say I’m so glad you’ve been able to gain more of an understanding of what your brother was dealing with as far as Lyme goes. If it goes undiagnosed or untreated (or even just not treated adequately), it can cause so many major issues with literally every bodily system. This channel itself has been a source of catharsis, especially lately with REN’s music playing no small part in that, but more than anything, the kindness and encouragement in the comment section are very therapeutic and healing, and I think that speaks to his ability to help others connect with those they may otherwise not have known, all gathering around some of these universal human experiences, even if some specifics are different. I’m very fortunate to have the support system I have, for sure. 💕
Wow! love your analysis! Just had the sense to look into "Mercury" more, was thinking the chemical element, but the planet came up first. Very interesting description of what perhaps aligns with how Ren sees himself. From Wiki: "Mercury is the first planet from the Sun ("blessed with a silver tongue") and the only one in the Solar System without a considerable atmosphere ("chest with an iron lung"). It is the smallest terrestrial planet of the Solar System and despite being also smaller than the Solar System objects Ganymede and Titan it is massive enough to have about the same surface gravity as the even larger planet Mars (speaks volumes on Ren's apparent obscurity - until "recently," that is - in the music industry / universe - ["extra-terrestrial, tentacles, alien," "strange"])." As an element, Wiki says, "Mercury is the only metallic element that is known to be liquid at standard temperature and pressure" - which could very easily relate to Ren's flow! 😍

So glad you got the allusion to atlas, I haven’t seen anyone else note this in any reaction (and I’ve seen a lot) i thought this was what he was referring to from the get go, as atlas carries the weight of the world on his shoulders which is how sickness can feel. Interestingly, this was recorded some time ago, before Ren became the global star he is right now, and probably feels like he is carrying the world on his shoulders for other reasons! When I was editing this one, and I got to that part, I started kicking myself for the fact that I didn’t remember to say it allowed in the video, because the atlas allusion seemed obvious to me as soon as I played it back, so I at least tried to add that note on screen, and I’m glad to know that you happen to see it. I know sometimes people have videos on when they’re needing to also do other things, so not everybody catches notes when they’re written on screen.

Hi Becca, huge thanks for all brilliant work on looking inside lyrics like REN’s to help reveal the depth of intelligence and empathy within them. There’s a part of the last verse that really stuck me in its duality “never second guessing, intuition getting wise”. This could also be “getting whys”. Why am i sick? Why am i here? Why is the world like this? Also, as you referenced, a pupil is student and the entry point for light: enlightenment. And eye can be “I”. I’m a pupil. Carrying on Ren deliberately drops the “d” from “mind”. It’s inferred by the rhyme scheme. But now it becomes “mine”. To dig. The search. The reveal. Which plays into the next line “look for all the answers that i never seem to find” here “eye” and “I” are reversed in meaning. But both being true. And finally linking back to the double in “wise” and “whys”. Again many thanks for all your great work. You’re an inspiration.

Most reactors don't talk much about the last poetical part (except the depression line because it is so obvious), but not the tattered wings part....it is so metaphorical (and my favourite) and you were the only one who pointed out the defiance and pride behind it: even when I am broken and damaged and the gods have banished me from heaven I I still will fly. I also find here some references to some of Ren's older songs like Heretic or Penitence (also a very metaphorical song....maybe you were the only one who would manage to analyze that one by the way🙈).
I hope you could understand what I wanted to say, English isn't my first language and we Germans love long and sentences with a lot of parentheses (obviously 😂).

The first time the phrase, “turn it up to 11” was used was in the comic mockudrama “This is Spinal Tap” (1984). Whenever you hear this they are referring to this.

The short answer is, on TH-cam, I posted a handful of reactions in 2017-2019 on another channel, but never really got into it seriously because I doubted my ability to really contribute anything to this space that’s not already being done.
When NF released his HOPE single in February, I just KNEW I had to react to it. I got a lot of good feedback on that, and I feel like 80% of the comments there asked me to react to Hi Ren.
At that point, I still doubted my ability, and don’t want to become a “reaction channel” because impaired syndrome convinced me I couldn’t do it. But once I posted the reaction to Hi Ren, then Sick Boi, then Chalk Outlines…at that point it was super clear to me: I had to break out of the resistance and preconceived notions of what my channel/content “should” be, and embrace the reactions because I love to do them, AND because others have really connected with them.
My husband can tell you I’ve spent the entire nearly-16 years we’ve been together breaking down so many songs (especially hip-hop/rap) over the years, so I’ve always really loved doing it just in my day to day life. The reception I’ve gotten over the past 2 months of sharing these has absolutely felt like I’m living in an alternate universe, it’s so surreal!

I’ve never seen another artist like this, one who is not only excellent, and versatile across virtually all genres, but who ALSO can speak to a lot of things other artists who don’t deal with similar issues can’t. Absolutely one of a kind. Ren has not said what the animal masks mean. He wants people to come to their own interpretations.

Good point about the pig mask, I think we’ve definitely seen it represent some common themes in general (capitalism, greed, medical industry, etc), but I actually really love that he hasn’t said it’s one specific thing, because I love hearing everyone‘s perspectives and interpretations!
