The Greatest Raid - Operation Chariot
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 6 ก.พ. 2025
- HMS Campbeltown, an obsolete WW1 destroyer was sent on a one way mission to St Nazaire. A floating time bomb, its intent was to destroy the only dry dock capable of repairing Tirpitz on the North Atlantic coast. An incredibly important mission that was seen by many to be too dangerous. In many circles Operation Chariot has become known as the Greatest Raid of all time. It came at great cost and was achieved only through the extreme bravery of those involved.

Bit similar story is the captured British submariners who managed to place bombs under Tirpiz. Ofcource they told the Germans about the bombs but only about 10 minutes before they were supposed to go off (not enough to get the ship on the move in time). IIRC they survived the war.

If anything, the British are good at delivering one liners. Like during the battle of Jutland. “There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today”.

That's us in a nutshell, one of the commandos that fought there said he ran round a corner and a German shouts "handy hook" at him so he just shouted it back at him
This reminds me of Operation Medium, in which the British Battleship HMS Revenge conducted a nighttime naval bombardment by using an air raid as cover. In late 1940 the English noticed a large number of German landing craft in the port of Charbourg. These had been gathered for Operation Sealion, and although the window for the invasion had already passed, they still constituted an uncomfortable concentration of German forces just across the English Channel.
As RAF precision bombing was still a work in progress at this point of the war the English needed something a little more accurate than "there's the target city, chuck the bomb out the window and hopefully we hit something important." They had the Revenge available, but it was dubious that the old ww1 era battleship could get close enough to the well defended harbor to accurately hit its targets. So they came up with a plan that would require both timing and good luck: an air raid was to be launched against the city, and while all the Germans were looking upwards the warship would tiptoe in and shoot up the landing forces from practically point blank range.
The plan went off without a hitch, and by the time the Germans realized what was happening and returned fire with shore defense batteries, the Revenge had successfully knocked out a large number of invasion craft and retreated back into the darkness of night without a scratch.
Drachinifel has a great video detailing the event, and if you're interested I would highly recommend you check it out.

My favourite story of this is ( of many ) that of Tom Durrant, he was one of the small motor launches when they were engaged by a much much larger German Destroyer, I’ll put the citation here
“For great gallantry, skill and devotion to duty when in charge of a Lewis gun in HM Motor Launch 306 in the St Nazaire raid on 28 March 1942.
Motor Launch 306 came under heavy fire while proceeding up the River Loire towards the port. Sergeant Durrant, in his position abaft the bridge, where he had no cover or protection, engaged enemy gun positions and searchlights ashore. During this engagement he was severely wounded in the arm but refused to leave his gun. The Motor Launch subsequently went down the river and was attacked by a German destroyer at 50 to 60 yards range, and often closer. In this action Sergeant Durrant continued to fire at the destroyer's bridge with the greatest of coolness and with complete disregard of the enemy's fire. The Motor Launch was illuminated by the enemy searchlight, and Sergeant Durrant drew on himself the individual attention of the enemy guns, and was again wounded in many places. Despite these further wounds he stayed in his exposed position, still firing his gun, although after a time only able to support himself by holding on to the gun mounting.
After a running fight, the Commander of the German destroyer called on the Motor Launch to surrender. Sergeant Durrant's answer was a further burst of fire at the destroyer's bridge. Although now very weak, he went on firing, using drums of ammunition as fast as they could be replaced. A renewed attack by the enemy vessel eventually silenced the fire of the Motor Launch, but Sergeant Durrant refused to give up until the destroyer came alongside, grappled the Motor Launch and took prisoner those who remained alive.
Sergeant Durrant's gallant fight was commended by the German officers on boarding the Motor Launch. This very gallant non-commissioned officer later died of the many wounds received in action”
By commended, the German officers actually spoke with some British officers who were taken prisoner, and said that he should get a VC.
What a class act

Impressive animation, congratulations!! You picked a difficult subject here because trying to do this raid justice is no easy task. HMS Campbelltown did indeed start out life as an American Wickes class Destroyer. It was supplied to the Royal Navy in return for American access to various British bases in Canada and the Caribbean. There were 50 Destroyers supplied from the US navy's reserve. There was some serious bravery displayed on this mission, particularly from the men in the flotilla following Campbelltown which was decimated due to it being comprised of unarmoured ships.
