I looove kaszanka! When I was little the thought of eating something with blood scared me but now I love it. We always eat kaszanka when we have barbeque (grill?). It tastes a little like liver but it's more spicy
Smalec is also one of my favourites! We use it on bread like butter. It has an interesting taste and it's the best with pickled cucumber

Pour a few drops of vinegar over galat. It gets tastier right away (believe me, I don't touch galat if there is no vinegar on the table)

The 'jelly' is made of boiling 'the pig leg' for a long time together with bones. It naturalny makes gelatine. The gelatine is made the same way, you've just never thought it is made from bones...

Czernina is actually a super old dish, that was served to suitors for the marriage. If the family of the lady refused the suitor, they gave him Czernina at the dinner. Soup has a salty-sweet taste, and usually is served with cherries. It's not bad, but have a unique taste. The very begginings of this kind of soups reaches Sparta - soldiers were eating black broth, which was basically a pig's blood mixed with vinegar. Kaszanka however is tasty - you should try it warm, with some wasabi. You might really like it.

Yes. Czernina another name "czarna polewka" is quite good soup. But not for single men who wants to married young woman :P ;) Because it means (in future in-laws home) that they want to reject this man. Simple "NO" could be awkward for both sides. Of course it's an old tradition :)

Did you tried Placki Ziemniaczane (potato pancakes) or Placki z jabłkami (the same as potato pancakes but made with apples instead)
Sometimes potato pancakes are served with gulash and sour cream.
We also have sweet pierogi. Most of the time with strawberries in them.

The kaszanka might look awful at first glance, even when u think about the ingredients they are quite "unique", but the taste itself is actually good (which is weird lol) you should definitely try it! When it comes to smalec, i hate it and personally dont recommend it, despite many people might say otherwise.

Are you tried fish soup? I remember that it was prepared for Christmas or gingerbread soup, my grandmother had an older recipe, where over the pot at least the whole day happened, with the addition of alcohol, she always said to eat (jeść śmiało, bo od jej jedzenia jeszcze nikt nie umarł). Now in the inetrnet I can't find a similar recipe. edit there are similar recipes but not the same, certainly not added chocolate, figs.

I guess that You must try flaki soup, it's really nice in taste, spicy.
Also kaszanka, You can buy it now, while it's barbecue time, almost in every grocery store in fridge next to sausages.
That jelly with meat You must eat as cold dish taken just from fridge.
Greetings and have a nice stay in Poland ;)

I really luv kaszanka, cut into small strips and baked on a pan to a crisp, together with kapusta(sauerkraut) perfect comfort food for autum and winter. Smalec is also great with fresh bread, ziadle mleko is not food per se, rather a bewerage. Best served with mashed potatoes or drunk ice cold when its hot outside.

"Kaszanka"'s name comes from that it's filled with "kasza" - groats, or hulled grains. The most common kind of "kasza" is made of buckwheat (soba), but there's many other kinds, like millet or oat - Poles also consider the Turkish bulgur (wheat) to be a kind of "kasza". Each of these is viable to just have as a starchy side with a meat stew or something, and I think buckwheat "kasza" is something that's fairly specific to the Slavic lands.

I used to hate kaszanka just because I knew what it was, but recently I've tried it and I liked it a lot. It's best served on barbecue.

  • @Miki_Naz
    @Miki_Naz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Kaszanka is very good, it's always an option on barbecue. I only recently realized what it's made of and it sounds disgusting but it's actually good.
Melted hot smales is a great addition to Pierogi. Some people eat it with bread but room temperature smalec sounds disgusting.
Czernina, flaki and jelly with meat are just straight up disgusting.
Hot ice-cream are great in the winter.
I haven't heard about the rest.

You can buy Kaszanka in most departament stores like "Biedronka" or shops that specialise in meat like "Grot".
Just buy it and microwave it or fry it on a pan till the insides pop open.
If you aren't disgusted by the fact that you're eating blood you should be fine.
It's kinda like rice with a meaty seasoning.

Kaszanka is great much better than kiełbasa-more delicate. It's great with carmelized choped onions. Looks bad but I don't know anyone who dislike it. There is also "white" version which is great as well.
Smalec is like bacony butter. Specially home-made is so Rich in flavor. With bacony bits it's a pure meaty heaven.
Flaki? Normal, a bit spicy soup with a strange lookin pasta xD
I also recomend "kiszka ziemniaczana". It should be fried, grilled or baked in the Owen. It's basicly mix of meat, onion and potatoes in a bowel.
There are many dishes with a bit controversial parts of meat like stomachs, hepatis, toungs ect. I recomend cow toungs in horseradish or mustard (bechamel based) sauce.

    1. I like czarnina but only if it's sweet. People eat it in sour or sweet way. I prefer the second one 'cause sour one is disgusting to me.
2.Kaszanka is delicious when it's grilled or if you fry it with onions.
But, remember to fry only interior of it!
BTW, Poles love to grill sausages, kaszanka and other meat.
    3. Try this on a slice of bread and pickled cucumber. Very tasty.
There's also a version for people on a diet. You use white beans, fried onion and little bit of apple and blend it all together.
    4. I haven't eaten flaki 'cause it's name is disgusting haha.
    5. I used to like nóżki when I was a child. Now, I don't eat them.
    6. Fruit soup is made from different fruits. It depends on the region. My mother-in-law uses prunes. My grandma uses cherries and other fruits. It's eaten during Christmas. But, not every family eat it. My mom always cook mushroom soup.
    7. My parents love to drink zsiadłe mleko during summer. They drink it with dinner. I haven't even tried this.

People from Poland tend to eat a lot of fat because it makes ur warm in cold winters + eating fat while drinking alcohol helps to reduce hangover next day :D
I have to agree with you with sweet rice and pasta - it's just... bleh XD always salty

If You want to eat "flaki" then buy from "Pudliszki" Company. Very good quality. And eat only very warm. You can add there pepper and hot pepper.
"Smalec" is very good with bread and ...vodka ;) But bread must be smeared thinly.
I hate "kaszanka" and everything made from groats.
"Zimne nóżki" are good but if your liver is sensitive don't eat it. Because they are hard to digest.
But I think one of the most weird food is "sos z cynaderek"- "kidneys sauce". Very tasty only made by experienced cook.
And "móżdżek wieprzowy z jajecznicą" -"pork brain with scrambled eggs" :) OMG how good it is! You can't buy this. it's homemade food.
