I've recently bought Cursed Bread! When I read it, which will probably be in the next few weeks or so, I'll leave a comment saying what I thought about it. And one of your 3-star books, Land of Milk and Honey, looks interesting to me, so I may well read that at some point. I read 91 books last year, 16 of which were 2023 publications. Of those 16, my favourite was Small Mercies by Dennis Lehane. It's a 5-star book for me. I don't know if it'd be your cup of tea - I've not seen you talk much about this type of book - but it's an explosively brilliant crime thriller, exploring racial tensions in 70s America. It's uncompromising, has real depth, and is brilliantly written. I thought it was a book of rare quality and I devoured it - it's possibly the most gripping book I read all last year. A few others I really liked - probably 4-star books for me: Ordinary Human Failings by Megan Nolan, which I thought was a perceptive & empathetic contemporary novel. For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy On My Little Pain by Victoria Mackenzie, a novella set in the 1400s about the life of two devoutly religious women - it's kind of a character study of the two women, and it evokes the period detail very well. It's beautifully written and it stayed with me after I'd finished it. The Only One Left by Riley Sagar - an enjoyably twisty gothic mystery-thriller that I found very entertaining, and also emotionally engaging, with characters that I cared about. A couple that I didn't really enjoy were Everybody Knows by Jordan Harper and No One Saw a Thing by Andrea Mara. Both thrillers and both falling a little short for me. Not terrible, but 2-stars. Anyway, I look forward to reading Cursed Bread and I will let you know what I think about it!
I hope you enjoy Land of Milk and Honey if you get around to reading it. 91 books in a year is amazing! Thank you so much for all the recommendations! I'm already on the waiting list at my library for For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy on My Little Pain. I'm really looking forward to reading it. Ordinary Human Failings sounds great. I haven't heard of that one before so thank you. I've just placed myself on the waiting list at my library ☺
