    I already saw several videos on bowl turning but always can learn new tricks from the masters. I am a newbie to wood turning and would like to commend you for this bowl. It has a very pleasant design. Congrats from Blumenau in Brazil.

    Daniel. This is a great bowl! I love the wood, the shape, and I had never heard of burning with a paper towel. I am going to try and make a bowl that resembles yours. Great video as usual.

      Hi Billy! Thank you so much, my dear friend, for such nice comments! Yes, a lot of people burn marks in grooves with copper wires, which is a common method. Then, I began burning in circular groves in bases of bowls, using a small wooden stick that you can rub in the inside of the groove while turning at speed. Finally, in borders, you can use paper towel, like in this case. Cheers! And keep yourself and your loved ones healthy! Daniel

      +Gord Rock Hi Gord! Thank you very much, dear friend, for the kind comments! I hoped to be able to provide a couple of ideas of how to turn without a chuck. I know, when I first got the lathe, it was sort of a big question how to do it! Cheers! Daniel

    Great video Daniel!! and the bowl looks really great! it's one of my favorite shapes to turn, so much so most of the bowls I keep for myself are of that same design :) One of the first, if not the actual first, bowls I've turned, a few years ago, I didn't have a chuck to use, and I really didn't know how to use a faceplate as well, and to tell you the honest truth, I don't rememeber how I turned it, except that it was between centers the whole time...

    • @DanielVilarino
      @DanielVilarino  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Yuval Lahav Woodturning Hi Yuval! That was quite a feat, my friend! I think turning a bowl between centers must be quite difficult. That is a pleasing shape, isn't it? sort of in the middle of a hollow form and a bowl. Thank you very much for your comments and also for watching the video! Cheers! Daniel

    Very nice bowl, Daniel. Nice video, as well.
    I think that mounting with a faceplate/glue block as you did in this video is at least as secure as mounting in a chuck, and probably the same amount of effort. I also like that the mounting method can accommodate the design rather than the other way around as is often the case with a chuck.
    And I'm glad that this one didn't go flying! :)

    • @DanielVilarino
      @DanielVilarino  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Barry's Workshop Hi Barry! Thank you for you comments dear friend! If done properly, it is a very secure method to hold pieces. You are correct, you are not limited by the dimensions of the chuck. I was so glad that I could get this one without being thrown through the workshop, otherwise would have been a bit embarrasing ;) Cheers! Daniel

    Hola Daniel! Sorry, that's about all of my Spanish. Thank you for this video. I haven't seen anyone burn the edge of a bowl with kitchen paper before, but it looks a lot neater than with a blowtorch. How do you do it? Is it just dry paper and nothing else? No polish or paste? Do you use a fast or slow lathe speed to do it?

    • @DanielVilarino
      @DanielVilarino  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dear Lew! Thank you very much, my friend, for your comments and for watching the video. The trick is to do it with dry paper and running the lathe at least at 800 or more rpms. The friction generates heat, and that heat begins to increase until finally it will burn the wood. The bowl already had some finish if you look at that part of the video, and even the paste and the friction polish would lubricate just a bit comparing with just bare wood, the heat is still enough to burn it. Be careful though, not to get the paper on fire, lol! Cheers! Daniel

    hi, does that mask work with a beard? does it seal well on the face? i am considering buying one...
    i will appreciate your recommendation.

    • @DanielVilarino
      @DanielVilarino  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rami! Thank you, my friend, for your comment and for watching the video. This is an old video, from 2016, and during that time I was using that mask, that worked really well. As you can see, I do have a beard, although I keep it kind of short. In my case, the mask always worked well. The only problem I had with that mask is that I use glasses, and because of the sweat, they would get fogged. For that reason, after several years I decided to invest in a mask that has air flow, because it keeps the mask environment cooler and my glasses never fog. The mask I purchased is much more expensive, also from 3M, the Versaflo PAPR TR-300, but for me was important to invest in it, because I have lung issues, and I need a mask that is comfortable enough to use for a long period of time, otherwise, you take it off and then you are exposed to the dust. I hope this helps! Cheers! Daniel

    Very good video,well documented and filmed,a pleasure to watch.
    I burn rings into my work using wire,and have never seen it done with paper.Is this the
    Only way to burn an inside ring ???
    Keep up the good work. Bill.

    • @DanielVilarino
      @DanielVilarino  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bill! Thank you very much for your comments and for watching the video. The idea of burning rings, both external or internal, or even at the base, is to generate enough friction between the wood and the material used, so that the wood will eventually began to burn. It is a controlled burning and you have to be careful not to get the paper in flames LOL! You can basically use anything that it is safe to hold against the wood. You could use another piece of wood, perhaps a soft one, like dry pine or dry poplar, or a piece of formica as I have seen some turners. I prefer no to use formica because the fumes can be dangerous. I hope this helps! Cheers! Daniel

    Thank you for posting your vids in Spanish as well as English. I am trying to learn Spanish so by watching both presentations I am progressing, slowly, but progressing. Since I have the bad habit of exceeding the interior diameter (a hole in the bottom, I was thinking that when preparing the mortise you could dome the center portion then drill for your coin. The coin, therefore, would not intrude into the bottom of the bowl and would be more showcased. Just a thought.

    • @DanielVilarino

      +Earl Rumble Hi Earl! Thank you, my friend for you comments and suggestions. You are more than welcome :) That is a great idea and I sort of did something like that (dome in the middle for the coin) in one of my previous videos: th-cam.com/video/bYsnVWt1ddw/w-d-xo.html
      If you check around minute 26, I was doing what you said. Yes, it is a safer way to go to avoid going through the base (which is not the first time it would have happened). Cheers! Daniel

    Beautiful bowl Daniel and without a chuck!! Well done. Question: Making your abrasive paste, do you combine all ingredients then heat it up to melt the bees wax?

    • @DanielVilarino
      @DanielVilarino  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Joe Ritz Hi Joe! Thank you very much for your comment my friend! I melt the wax first using the double boiler method, then I add the mineral oil and finally the abrasive. The trick is to let it cool mixing it up often so that the texture will be uniform, otherwise the abrasive will go to the bottom of the paste. Once the texture thickens, the abrasive will stay in place. Hope that helps! Cheers! Daniel

      Hi Erik! Thank you very much, dear friend, for you comment and for watching the video. I am using a Grizzly G0733. It is originally from China and it is distributed by Grizzly. So far I do not have major complaints. It could have a wheel on the headstock for turning the axis by hand, which it doesn't and the indexing system could be a bit more functional, but it works. I would probably go for an american built lathe for my next one, perhaps with a bit more power (3HP), the G0733 has 2HP, and do not get me wrong, it has been plenty so far, but I never tackled really big bowls. And even if I get a larger lathe in the future I will probably keep this one as well. I will put below the link to the site so you can check the specs. Cheers! Daniel

    I see you turn wearing gloves. what are your thoughts about it?

    • @DanielVilarino
      @DanielVilarino  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Scott! Thank you, my friend, for the comment. I alternatively use them or not. People argue that it is dangerous to do it, because it can grab in the chuck or somewhere. Other argue that they protect their hands. I guess you could find arguments in favor or using or not. Particularly, I find them useful when turning very dry wood. The chips of this wood can come out of the lathe at speed and sometimes hot and be a bother on your hands, particularly the one closer to the work. Since sometimes I turn right handed and sometimes left handed, I guess I wear both just in case. If you are turning slow or green wood, you probably can turn barehanded. I have had small cuts on the fingers or the hand itself that could have been prevented by the gloves. Nothing serious but a bother. And I never got them entangled with anything. I guess, as always, you have to use your best judgement and what your gut is telling. If your gut feeling gives you a sense of insecurity wearing gloves, do not use them. Sorry I can not tell you much more, hope this helps! Cheers! Daniel
