    surprising that harry has lived 13 years if this owner is allowing him to get into all these cat fights and "falling off a few balconies"

    • @helenl3193
      @helenl3193 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'm in London, UK and we've always had rescue cats that go out a bit. Fights will happen, (hopefully only occasionally) especially if there's a lot of other cats in the area, but falling off of balconies is alarming! That's not normal imho. I hope his sister had a word with him about proper, responsible pet ownership! 🤯

    • @helenl3193
      @helenl3193 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Also, I think it depends on the cat and the owner - we've always had a safe, green space (private or communal garden) they can use, and try to always be around when they go out so we can break up any fights that start.
      I have friends who have indoor cats, and they are perfectly happy. I never force mine, but as ex-strays they can get anxious if kept confined so I will leave the window open so they can go out on the patio during the day. I always look for homes that aren't on busy main roads, so it's that bit safer if they do venture past the garden and I believe most animal rescues here will only let you have indoor cats if you live in a high traffic area.
      It's about managed risk, really. Finding the best, safest option for each cat. If I ever got kittens I'd probably train them on harnesses so I could take them out like that instead (which I'm attempting with my 12 and 3 yr old girls, but turns out it's not just old dogs that struggle with new tricks!)
      Assuming I had they alongside some of the current gang - it wouldn't be fair to try and make them housecats while their older siblings got to play by different rules!

The newest addition won't even let me touch him yet (adult ex-stray who got injured/mistreated - I found him limping around the communal garden and started feeding him), I'm trying to socialise him, it's very slow but we're making progress. He trusts me more than others, but brushing is out of the question, for now.

    • @poweredbymoonlight9869
      @poweredbymoonlight9869 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      He said harry gets overstimlated by the kids or whoever it was that like to come over and pat him. That's a completely different thing. What the owner needs to do in that case is to not allow the ones who usually make him overstimulated be so intense. Cats will bite bite and scratch if they are overstimulated. You can't blame a cat for basically trying to make them stop with violence as it's last resort when the humans obviously failed to see the signs of him already trying to show and tell them it's enough.

    • @helenl3193
      @helenl3193 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, another commenter was judging him for letting him go outside and get into fights. Imho him letting Harry out to play is less of a concern than that he seems to not know much about caring for him and making sure he feels safe and isn't getting overwhelmed/over stimulated by visitors at home. It seems like he only brought him to the vet because the wound had started to smell, not because he was aware of the problem/monitoring it until it started impacting him with the smell. Poor Harry 😕 I hope I'm wrong and he's a better owner than he appears here! 🤞🤞

    • @jeannegallegos8410
      @jeannegallegos8410 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Personally, I think that the owner of Harry is negligent. How could he let that wound fester. Harry needs some Behavior Modification and so does his owner. Also, keeping people away while he's "overstimulated" is a great 💡 that someone suggested. Meet the friends somewhere else. And educate that owner. Keep Harry indoors &`away from fights. 💜❤ Harry's a good cat. Take good care of him.

      defectiveshark I always kind of knew it meant to “act out”, be silly but I never ever knew the origin of it until now, if it’s correct.
      Urban Dictionary:
      “This expression is a shortened version of the longer and more widespread phrase ‘be like a pork chop in a synagogue’; this has been around since the 1950s. Since pork is forbidden food for Jewish people, to describe something as being like a pork chop in a synagogue means that it is highly inappropriate, embarrassingly out of place, and quite unwelcome. The Australian expression ‘carry on like a pork chop’ has now shifted the focus from inappropriateness to foolishness.”

      @ShieAyla 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Idk about her cat but I had a cat once that refused to be an indoor fellow. I forced him until he was vaccinated and neutered, and out he went. If I hadn't, he'd have found a way eventually. That and he never shut up about going out. It was constant for about 2 months. Neutered and fully vaccinated? I was done with the complaining. He was the best cat. Lived a long life, and one had two serious issues with bladder stones. For into a few cat fights, and went "missing" twice. It isn't easy HAVING an outdoor cat. We worry. But some cats refuse to accept an indoor life. T was one of those.
      Sometimes, quality is more important than quantity. Cats aren't meant to be kept inside. I know why we do it, but it's not really their nature. T would have been miserable, and I'd rather had him lived happy for 3 years and be outdoors, then live 10 years locked inside. Because that's the kind of cat HE was. He was also smart, AND he never was out of range of where he could hear me, my car, come home, and he came home every night when we owned a doggie door. But he would have been miserable stuck inside all the time.

But there were crocodilians, mammals, and sharks alive at the same time as dinosaurs so I can see why you'd think that.

      Joanne, a friend had the same trouble until someone told her to try this.
      She started keeping the cat carrier open on the floor. (This was done during a period when the cat didn’t have to go to the vet for a few months). She started putting a few treats in the carrier. After a few hours the cat went in, grabbed a treat, then ran out. It took a few weeks until the cat would go into the carrier and stay there to eat it’s treats.
      Eventually she could get the cat in the carrier without the cat freaking out.
      A guy did this with his macaw and it worked too.

      It really does help a lot. I live behind a grocery store where there are several stray cats. I feed and care for the ones I can, and all the females and neutered males hang out no further than the little strip of woods around my place. I go for days or weeks without seeing the toms and I've spotted them wandering miles up the road when I'm out on walks. They'd have to cross a ton of very busy streets to get that far out, and they come back with viruses and fight wounds more often, too. I had to have my favorite cat, a tuxedo I named Mystery, put to sleep after he came home with a ruptured eye and then tested positive for FIV and FeLeuk at the vet. It broke my heart.
      I've tried to get someone out to trap the boys for neutering, but since Covid started I haven't gotten any answers to my calls. I live in the Southern US and animal welfare resources are pretty limited, unfortunately.

      Depending on when they filmed this, Harry could have been "blowing his coat" for the new season. Is something that generally happens twice a year with many cats (especially lonng haired cats) when they shed their thick summer fur for a lighter summer coat, or dumping their summer fur to bathe way for the thicker winter coat. We had a short haired calico that did it like clockwork each year (April & September / October) and even though she only looked slightly fluffier for the winter, it was always a crazy _mess,_ even when we brushed her twice daily and tried to vacuum to keep the fur down.
      It was also her favorite time to find, lay on, or snuggle into fresh laundry. 😫

But, since then, I learned so much about the dangers to both the cat and the wildlife around... that said, as an owner you've got to do SO much to make sure your cats have a nice and entertaining life indoors. This is stuff like creating a closed balcony or outdoor area, taking you cats on walks with a harness on, having lots of toys or different types and scratching posts around the place, and of course interactive playtime together. I actively play with my cat around 4 hours a day (spread out into 4 times), for example.
      Really, cat experts say that indoors is best, but vets and experts also won't force anyone to keep them indoors, of course. But, I know from having had both indoor and outdoor kitties that their happiness levels have been about the same. Although I love the regulars it was really nice seeing Dr. Danni on the show. I also enjoyed the clip at the end where she recorded the theme song. She has such a wonderful voice.
    The look and the sound of the cashew Harry Birds really is reminiscent of the dinosaurs but they are related to and was a little unnerving. It was really refreshing to see some new faces on the show and the behind-the-scenes look at filming dangerous situations.

    I feel for the baby koalas mummy. She must be devastated and grieving at losing her baby.

    Aww that baby Koala is ripping me apart, such a sweetie, shame it can't go back to his mumma.
