    It's important to keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times. If you don't, your car will blow up. Thus, why it's advised not to use the hand-over-hand method.

    I passed my driving exam on second try and had no problems. The first try, I had a very nerve wracking instructor. She was making me anxious, she raised her voice at me because I didn't turn my blinker on in time. She told me to turn right, right exactly on the turn and never gave me a warning beforehand. I asked her 'So... How's your day going?' She said ' It's fine, but we're not here to talk okay, we're here to drive." in a rude tone of voice. I was so relieved to pull back into the driving facility and get out of the car after that.

    I find it extremely interesting how in the UK this is the preferred method of steering while in most other countries (from my experience) hand over hand is sometimes even a required way to steer to pass the exam. There are benefits to both but i do believe hand over hand gives you a much better feel of where your wheels are.

First thing that happened was that my instructor slammed the brakes and asked what the hell i was doing because I crossed my arms. Ashley, very well presented instruction.
    The first vehicle I drove was a little grey Fergie tractor, when I was 10 back in '72. We lived on a farm and by the time I was 13 I was driving and working tractors regularly, Ford 4000 and 6600. I feel sorry and anxious for learner drivers having to learn all about, steering control, brake control, clutch control, AND other road users, and mirrors, and indicators. Then at 16 I got a 50cc MZ. At 17 I had a Ford Corsair. We were taught, at that time, never cross your hands. I passed first time in Sept 1979.
    I might have, but can't remember a time when I haven't steered with two hands in contact with the wheel.
    I just wonder how many accidents could be avoided if the persons had tow hands on the wheel, instead of, elbow on the door and holding the wheel with two finders. Maybe accident investigators should start asking that question.
    In 2017/18 I got my HGV Class 2 and Class 1 licence.

  • @keith6400
    @keith6400 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Apart from the lead hand going to top both hands are same height as you steer. The difference is only which one grips and which one slides to determine steering wheel direction of rotation. e.g. steering left the left hand grips on down motion and right hand grips on up motion with the opposite hand in each case sliding and mirroring position. Then you have to steer the other way to straighten up. I think the fact that both hands are same height on wheel (apart from the start) confuses people until they master the alternating grip/slide principle. Psychologically both hands going up and down at the same time does not add up to some people or relate to a direction of steer.

    What if I say that doing "push and pull" in a German driving test is allowed, but will give you very bad looks by the examiner?
    To be honest, if you do the push and pull, you can easily have problems with smooth steering.
    Add a sharp curve and some wet leaves and the choppy steering can cause quite some trouble.
    If you see a tight curve, just move one hand a bit further down and you got much more room for movement without even crossing hands.
    If you need to really turn the wheel, you can easily cross hands, if you learn how to do it in one fluid motion.

    Thank you this video is very informative how to use the steering wheel because I live in United States and I see too many people vibe that way with a steering wheel not saying that are not bad drivers but I like how you teach even with patients thank you and I hope to see more videos I'll be teaching people how to stir it's the steering wheels basically driving that was what I meant to say

    Nice video. I actually like using the method when you were saying "reach/down/and up" for regular turns where I do not need to rotate the steering wheel more than 270 degrees (see 4:56 - 5:00 for reference). I feel like I complete the turn with less movement that way. However, I do not "reach" back if the steering wheel adjusts itself with throttle out of the turn so I guess I have some type of hybrid method going on. :). I find hand-over-hand steering to be much better for sharper turns and parking.

  • @brocklievsay8262
    @brocklievsay8262 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm, I've never thought about how I steer, I kind of just do whatever works well for me. I normally drive with 1 hand with the elbow resting on the elbow rest during straight sections, having my other hand ready to help out if needed like for upcoming corners or tight curves. My other hand is just dead weight, and actually makes my steering less stable (on straight sections). Resting my arm on the door rest during passive driving time helps stabilize my arm and keeps it from getting fatigued so I can use it more effectively come action time. Just like in the Cessna Skyhawk where I have the left hand on the yoke, right hand on the throttle during takeoffs and landings, and feet on the rudder pedals.

    Well presented; interesting to see that you were using a Yaris Hybrid (one of which I now have). In particular, it's auto transmission makes life easier compared with manual.

    • @ashley_neal
      @ashley_neal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! How are you finding the Yaris?

    • @johnkeepin7527
      @johnkeepin7527 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's fine. A size down from my previous cars (the last one being a Honda Civic Mk9 with a 1.6 diesel engine). The Yaris does it's job, and is good on local trips, but not as efficient fuel wise on longer journeys, even allowing for the difference in energy content between petrol and diesel oil. My Yaris has higher aerodynamic drag, and the tyre set has higher rolling resistance as well. On the other hand, the reduced 'dead weight', and the use of regenerative braking on the Yaris is good around town. It's a shame we pay more tax per unit energy on petrol compared with diesel oil, but that's another story.

  • @MrGeeyess
    @MrGeeyess 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I was taught it was not considered correct to hook your thumbs behind the rim. This was to avoid breaking your thumbs in the event of a frontal impact. In later years, in taking IAM driving instruction this was still advocated by them. I notice that you often hook your thumbs under the rim although you do seem to employ the IAM recommendation when actually making a turn..

    • @ashley_neal
      @ashley_neal  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was on a course earlier this week and had a chat with a race driving instructor who obviously teach the fixed hand steering method for what they do, and he said he has never had any thumb injuries having had a number of motorsport crashes. This is possible another driving myth that is continued by people giving false reasoning.👍🏼

    • @MrGeeyess
      @MrGeeyess 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashley_neal Your friend obviously knows more than the Institute of Advanced Motorists. Interestingly, racing drivers usually take their hands off the wheel when crashing so would therefore avoid thumb injuries. Ordinary drivers I fear would grip the steering wheel tightly in similar situations.

    • @ashley_neal
      @ashley_neal  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, do you think it would be more sensible for IAM to let people steer how they wish but advise to let go of the wheel if you are going to crash? Holding the wheel in any manner could cause shoulder injuries in the event of a collision but IAM are just worried about thumbs! This is something that I see all the time. Training bodies spreading advice which has never been appropriately questioned, this is then adopted by a large number of people who understandably believe everything that is told. It’s a shame to be honest. 👍🏼

    • @ashley_neal
      @ashley_neal  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Modestyandstrength the pull push doesn’t have to be used but the best advice I can give you would be to relax your grip as much as possible. It’s the gripping and grabbing that leads to problems. Good luck. Ashley
