Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinent of Curiosities has a great episode based on Pickman's Model, with none other than Crispin Glover as Pickman. Perfect casting choice and its probably my favorite episode of the series for the tone it develops. It also adapted Dreams in the Witch House but I didn't think it was as solid of an episode, even if it was a very faithful adaptation. I do think it is interesting that a quarter of the show's length was dedicated to Lovecraft adaptations, though.
Great Video!! 👍👍👍 Here are some that could also be mentioned: - The Ivan Zuccon movies: Re-Animator (2017) The Colour from the Dark (2008) The Shunned House (2003) - The German movie: Die Farbe (2010)
There have been some Lovecraft adaptations for anthology shows. Stuart Gordon directed an adaptation of Dreams in The Witch-House for the Masters of Horror series. Dreams in The Witch-House and Pickman's Model were loosely adapted for Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Pickman's Model was also adapted for an episode of Night Gallery and as an animated short in 2014. BTW: Lovecraft fans who also like animation should check out Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham (2023). It's basically Batman re-imagined in Lovecraftian terms and set in a steampunk universe.
Night Gallery also did Cold Air and a 3 minute filler segment called Professor Peabody's Last Lecture, which names an Old One and has Lovecraft as a character.
The only thing I can think of to add offhand is debatable. It's the Dreams in the Witch House from Masters of Horror. Yeah it's a TV show so it doesn't really count, but you could argue it maybe? Showtime advertised Masters of Horror as 'one hour movies' and I recall them being released on physical media individually.
18:00 that movie cover was basically a template amongst cheap movies with slight changes between them. This and the movie cover what the girl crawling towards the screen were used so much.
There was an adaptation of sorts of Beyond The Wall Of Sleep back in 2006, i don't remember it being very good, also, I feel like Stuart Gordon's Masters Of Horror episode for Dreams In The Witch House is worth a mention even though it was a TV episode.
Strange Aeons: The Thing On The Doorstep (2005). I remember renting the DVD of it from Netflix back in 2012, when they still did that. But other than that bit of nitpicking, it was an enjoyable video. Thanks.
Cool Air was first adapted as a segment in the 1971 episode of the horror anthology tv show "Night Gallery", and Dreams in the Witch House was an episode of the horror anthology tv show "Masters of Horror" which came out in 2005 and was directed by Stuart Gordon.
I was going to complain that you left 1967's THE SHUTTERED ROOM out of your list, but the exact contribution Lovecraft gave to Derlith's "collaboration" has always been suspect.
You missed two Dreams O/T Witch House: an unidentified video version shown at the 2004 Lovecraft Film Festival I attended, and the Masters Of Horror Stuart Gordon episode. There are two animated shorts by Richard Corben: Dagon and Fungi From Yuggoth. Another fine piece is the animated Nyarlathotep. A quite fine piece. Finally, the last is Insumasu O Ouu Kage, the Japanese video Shadow Over Insmouth, also shown at the 2004 LFF. Loads of fun. On TH-cam right now.
There are a few out there, but they mostly deal in Sword & Sorcery (Tales from the Magician's Skull and New Edge Sword & Sorcery). There is also an e-zine CHM or Cosmic Horror Monthly that has both a free and subscription edition.
So, a great video but I think that there are enough missed adaptations to warrant a followup video. In fairness, I think all of us would LOVE to watch afollowup video so, I suppose that is a plus. Anyhow, here is what I can come up with off of the top of my head, and I'm certain I'm missing more than a few. (1963) Scarlet Friday: Loosely adapted from the Dunwich Horror (1982) Creepshow: Specifically, a segment inspired by the Colour Out of Space (1986) The Tomb (1987) The Testimony of Randolph Carter (1989) Dark Heritage (1991) The Ancestor: Actually a working title for the film The Resurrected, it only exists in the form of a workprint (first assembly 1-11-91) which was eventually shown at the HP Lovecraft Film Festival. (1992) Innsmouth o oou Kage:Japanese made for television movie - Shadow Over Innsmouth The Thing on the Doorstep (1997) Chilean Gothic: An adaptation of Pickman's Model (2000) L'Altrove: Features materials from several Lovecraft tales Wilber Whateley's Sex Drive (2002) Haunter of the Dark (2003) The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath The Shunned House (2006) Beyond the Wall of Sleep Cool Air Rats in the Walls The Tomb (2008) Colour from the Dark The Dunwich Horror and Others Pickman's Muse (2010) Die Farbe / The Colour out of Space (2015) The Haunter of the Dark (2017) Beyond the Wall of Fear The Haunter of the Dark II Herbert West: Re-Animator (2018) Blasted Heath Necronomicon aka Necronomicon: The Book of Hell (2020) The Haunter of the Dark III (2021) At the Mountains of Madness H.P. Lovecraft's Witch House Haunters of the Dark (2023) The Lurking Fear Necronomicon Older Gods (2024) H.P. Lovecraft's The Old Ones H.P. Lovecraft's Te Shadow Over Innsmouth Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep
Genius and directly my kind of thing. There is Huan Vu's version of The Colour Out Of Space which I'd think is missing (and maybe the Masters of Horror version of Dreams in the Witch House, but that's telly I suppose). And I might have included The Shuttered Room, but that's obviously much more Derleth than Lovecraft so I am bad and wrong. May the eldritch Elder Gods bless your new year,
Movie Timelines, Thank you for a great video. About HP Lovecraft adoptions. This is a good video. The Culur of Outer Space From beyond. To name a few. The birth of cosmic horror. To bad Lovecraft did not get to see his work make it. It is to bad we didn't get in the mountains of Madness movie. Thanks to jealous Ridley Scott. Cause the engineers are gods. He couldn't lose to the old ones or gods.I really do like this video very much. Look forward to another great video on this channel.
Many of the films inspired by Lovecraft are far more Lovecraftian than some of the direct adaptations. The Void and Underwater being two of the best I’ve seen in the past decade.
i've watched the whisperer in darkness and the call of cuthulu and its cool af how they made modern movies look like they were made in a different time period. same for the movie here comes hell.
Great video. There's a fair few I haven't seen so I need to rectify that. I remember having the unnameable on vhs (likely cut in the uk). I recently watched the first castle freak and suitable flesh which I enjoyed.
Used to play the Lovecraft role playing game. Scared the shit out of us 😁 The Innsmouth storyline with all the increasingly ‘fishy’ looking inhabitants was creepy as shit.
This. Despite the amateur acting, I thought the black & white cinematography was great and captured the "something is terribly wrong" creepy atmosphere quite well.
You sort of gave the 1970 Dunwich Horror short shrift - it was one of the most faithful and well-produced Lovecraft film… and still is. Dean Stockwell and future L.A. Confidential director Curtis Henson (as screenwriter here) both should’ve been commended. Very creepy film. 3.5 stars out of 4.
There is one called HP Lovecraft's Monster Portal, Im not sure if its based off one of his books. Closest I can see if The Thing at the Door Step, because body swapping. Its written by Scott Chambers(who makes A LOT of low budget Brit Horror) and two other people. Its...ok. Has moments that are good, but need ironing out. Effects are fine for low budget films standards
Josh I know I'm in the UK but do you know anywhere I could watch those necronomicon films I seen them in a video store years ago and never got around to watching them before the store closed down, I'd pretty much forgotten about them till you refreshed my memory here
You missed a 2006 Lovecraft film called Beyond the Wall of Sleep, which was a loose adaptation the story of the name. I know about it, because i had received a bunch of cheap movies on DVD.
Sorry if this is a repost, but I think my prior ones were filtered because I included the imdb link. Anywho... there is a really good animated film for "dream quest of unknown kadeth"
On Tubi, and ,maybe Prime, the Miskatonic U series is broken up into 3 different movies. Definitely a loveletter to the Stuart Gordon films, with 1/10 the budget. I like them.
How about Gods of the Deep (2023)? Also, The Shunned House (2003) is an anthology, where one of the segments adapts The Music of Erich Zann (pretty funky), and 2 other short stories which are not particularly good.
Now I'm curious... would you consider Evil Dead Lovecraftian? maybe a lovecraft adjacent? maybe just nothing to do with lovecraft outside of popularizing the Necronomicon further?
Cosmic horror or something unexplainable and just out of reach to fully comprehend ...its more of a feel. Like The Void, Event Horizion or Nick Cages Mandie.
Love lovecraft some of the movied could be better but others are great so i guess its balanced out. Love The Curse and Color out of space plus from beyond and of course the re-animator
Call girl of Cthulhu, The Thing on the Doorstep, The Dunwich Horror (2010), Masters of Horror: Dreams in the Witch House, HP Lovecraft's Witch House, HP Lovecraft's The Old Ones, Sacrifice, and Glorious should be on here. there's a 2023 or 2024 Necronomicon but it has nothing to do with the story.
I’m kind of bummed that Reanimator Academy isn’t included. But I also understand. It’s kind of it’s own thing and just takes loose inspiration from Re-Animator
Happy New Year all!
And read more Lovecraft.😊
Only way to read more? Call forth his spirit and task it. Have everything in print.

some short stories of Lovecraft were adapted in Rod Serling''s Night Gallery (1970-73)
Great Video!! 👍👍👍 Here are some that could also be mentioned:
- The Ivan Zuccon movies:
Re-Animator (2017)
The Colour from the Dark (2008)

@7:55 you reinsert the Curse artwork instead of Pulse Pounders FYI... Awesome video! :)
Also 1999 short film Cool Air (dir by Bryan Moore) would be a good one for a follow up video. Cheers
apparantly there were quite a few films that i had no idea about that are lovecraft adaptations, so ive got a lot to look into now😁👍

oooooh, what a pleasant surprise! i'm gonna cozy, learn my dry theory stuff and watch this in the breaks :-D
18:00 that movie cover was basically a template amongst cheap movies with slight changes between them. This and the movie cover what the girl crawling towards the screen were used so much.
Thanks for a load of new recommendations to watch. Good video.

I really miss those old magazines that would publish short stories.
There are a few out there, but they mostly deal in Sword & Sorcery (Tales from the Magician's Skull and New Edge Sword & Sorcery). There is also an e-zine CHM or Cosmic Horror Monthly that has both a free and subscription edition.
The Bleeders VHS cover used to scare the crap outta me when I was little, I also somehow got it confused with Stephen King's Sleepwalkers 😂
So, a great video but I think that there are enough missed adaptations to warrant a followup video. In fairness, I think all of us would LOVE to watch afollowup video so, I suppose that is a plus. You missed The Shuttered Room from 1966. It's more Derleth than Lovecraft, but it should still count if only for completionists.
Colour out of space. Wow, an American who understands sarcasm.
Movie Timelines,
Thank you for a great video. About HP Lovecraft adoptions. This is a good video. The Culur of Outer Space From beyond. To name a few. The birth of cosmic horror. Would love to see the TV adaptions of lovecraft like the many episodes of Night Gallery.
Many of the films inspired by Lovecraft are far more Lovecraftian than some of the direct adaptations. The Void and Underwater being two of the best I’ve seen in the past decade.
Another nod for Die Farbe. A very loyal to the source, German version of Colour Out of Space from 2010.
I know it’s TV but Night Gallery did a couple adaptations worthy of note
i've watched the whisperer in darkness and the call of cuthulu and its cool af how they made modern movies look like they were made in a different time period. same for the movie here comes hell.
That's quite a few movies in this video that I haven't heard of
You showed the curse poster a second time instead of the other movie you talked about 8:13
Great video. There's a fair few I haven't seen so I need to rectify that. I remember having the unnameable on vhs (likely cut in the uk). I recently watched the first castle freak and suitable flesh which I enjoyed.
Used to play the Lovecraft role playing game. Scared the shit out of us 😁
The Innsmouth storyline with all the increasingly ‘fishy’ looking inhabitants was creepy as shit.
I shouldn't have been shocked to see V mugging for the camera in your blurb on Reagitator. I forgot he was in that.
I think you missed one… a German indie version of the Color Out Of Space from the 2000s
This. Despite the amateur acting, I thought the black & white cinematography was great and captured the "something is terribly wrong" creepy atmosphere quite well.
In the Mouth of Madness
In the Mountains of Madness
I'd have counted it
The resurrected is awesome
When Vincent Price is near, darkness falls across the land, the midnight hour is close at hand.
That poster art for CTHULHU is incredibly familiar - it uses the same image that was used for an edition of Lonely Werewolf Girl by Martin Millar
I almost posted that you forgot "In the Mouth of Madness."
Beyond Reanimator had one of the most amazing soundtrack songs though
And if you stretch the parameters a bit on this (the whole "Lovecraftian" thing) you could add 1991's Cast a Deadly Spell and 1994's Witch Hunt.
There is one called HP Lovecraft's Monster Portal, Im not sure if its based off one of his books. Closest I can see if The Thing at the Door Step, because body swapping. 4:48 best movie here tbh
So I noticed that you missed the 2017 version of Herbert West Reanimator which was an Italian production. I hadn't heard of it until recently myself.
Sorry if this is a repost, but I think my prior ones were filtered because I included the imdb link.
Anywho... there is a really good animated film for "dream quest of unknown kadeth"
At 8:09 anyone else notice how The Evil Clergyman has the same poster as The Curse?
yes
You missed Herbert West re-animator from 2017,H.P .lovecraft's Witch House 2021 and colour from the dark a version of colour from space 2010.
Please do the timeline of the Fast and Furious movies. I'd be interested to know your thoughts
I noticed 4adaptations missing
The shuttered room
Cthulhu mansion
masters of horror dreams in the witchouse
And pickman’s muse
^ this
Cthulu mansion might not be great shakes, but still a sbig watch.
On Tubi, and ,maybe Prime, the Miskatonic U series is broken up into 3 different movies. Definitely a loveletter to the Stuart Gordon films, with 1/10 the budget. I like them.
i hope "the deep ones" is different from "easter bunny, kill, kill!". i think i could actually not get through it...
You forgot the masters of horror episodes.

maybe just nothing to do with lovecraft outside of popularizing the Necronomicon further?
What makes a movie “Lovecraftian”? Like what elements does it need as opposed to more generic horror?
Cosmic horror or something unexplainable and just out of reach to fully comprehend ...its more of a feel. Like The Void, Event Horizion or Nick Cages Mandie.
