I've been playing this game for 20 years (there were a few fallow years in there), and for the first time ever this week, I did the "deliver sugar plants" side quest. Had never even heard of it. Still my favorite game ever.
I remember this game! I used to play it on my uncle's computer. I loved this game so freaking much. I had basically beaten the game (all promotions on all factions except Dutch [no freaking idea how], all items, married to beautiful English wife, full fleet of nothing but fully-upgraded Montalban's ships, all special crew members, all pirate lords defeated, all family members saved but one) and I had saved the game whilst on land, on my way to save the last family member. But everything changed when the brother attacked. I went to finish my game the next day, and he had OVERWRITTEN MY F***ING SAVE FILE WITH HIS NEW GAME!!! It felt similar to one's sibling starting a new game on pokemon, and overwriting your save with a full team of shiny, level-100 legendaries. I have never let him forget his transgression, even after 8 years.
This is also one of my all time favorite games. I first played when I was 8 in 2005 and still comeback to it every now and again. Really happy to see you playing this!
This randomly showed up in my recommended videos and I thought OH MY GOD SPLAT IS ACTIVELY PLAYING PIRATES - nope, 2014. That said, it’s in my top 3. BRING. IT. BACK.
Oh man, you just got a huge respect boost from me. :) This is truely one of the best and most fun games out there and it helps that the pirate age is one of my favourite periods in history.
The name mildew is in reference to season 8 episode 5 of full house where danny gives himself a crazy band name because everyone else had one, so he called himself mildew.
I always wanted this game as a kid but as I've grown older and wiser about games I have been on the fence about it so thanks for playing it splatter cat.
I've played pirates first time on Amiga 500 and then I finally revisited it when I played this on the very first Xbox.... I was instantly hooked and I still play it from time to time.

i lived in a place where video games where generally hard to come by. a friend of mine when i was a kid had this and i played it once for 3 hours straight at his place, never to play it again till i was old enough to pay for it myself on steam. It was indeed worth the wait and so nice to see my fave youtuber feel that way about this game. so much stoke!

Just throwing that out there but Mildew came an episode of Full House. Jessie was trying to get new members for his band the Rippers. Danny wanted to try out and actually played the guitar really well to everyones surprise. Danny took on the stage name of Mildew and then battled Viper for a spot on the band. Danny is named Mildew because he thinks it is a grungy name since he loves to clean so much.

Definiely one of my all time favorites but for years i simply could not remember the name of the game until you said it and it instantly clicked.

But yesterday, I found a game just like Sid Meyers pirates but for mobile, it is an MMORPG called ocean legend, and it has everything I remember from pirates.
i like the cut of your jib captain mildew. i'm mostly here cause i want to see a perfect game that collects everything. i came very close to doing one myself, but i got screwed by the final map, the final lost city had nothing but an x on it with the words "search in the vicinity of gren granada" which is a HUGE radius to search if you have nothing but an X to guide you. so i said "screw it" and just settled down with the campeche daughter. still got governor rank tho
Love this game, I also still have my disc copies of Gold. Though I played this around 12-13 years of age, I simply only sailed around beating treasury ships, pirate ships and the Marque del Montalban. The Problem though is that I defeated him for the last time but I have yet to find either my Aunt or Sister and the only way to get more info about their whereabouts are via the Governor's Daughters. I also typically have just enough gold around to buy supplies which resulted in crew morale getting lower as time passes.
Also, there are some various skin mods for this game available in the web, like changing the Daughter's dresses, your Formal Attires or even the Governor's room.

Likewise, I managed to beat this version on every difficulty save for Swashbuckler. I almost defeated Montalbon in his fortress several times, but never could close the deal. He's just too tough. Maybe I should play it again...
I liked playing this when it came out but I still prefered the original pirates with no quests and no time limit. Just chose the era and your skill and you're good to go and keep pirating until you finally die in combat or until you think that's good enough. I remember I almost always picked the dutch back then and there was an ear (can't recall which) which had them start with I belive it was a frigate or something along those lines. I also remember a run which was not with the dutch so I started on the weakest ship, e penance or whatever it was called. First thing I find was a spanish war galeon and I sunk it lol. Undercrewed, undergunned and one shot was enough to sink me but still, I sank them... I really didn't want to sink them though, if i could start off with a galleon that would have been stellar but alas, the enemy crew was just to big to be able to take the ship and tehy never surrended so. To the bottom of the ocean with them.
Oh, man. You got me excited when you said the Genesis Shadowrun was one of your favorite games. I've only found one good LP of that game and it was Time Travel Astronaut's. Back on topic, though. I bought this game a while back and I've yet to play it. Maybe this LP can motivate me. Looking forward to it.

Still play this game after ten years! My strategy is pretty much always the same: 1. Get Mail Runner or War Canoe, name it "Septilus Nex" (it was supposed to mean "Sudden Death" in Latin and I misremembered it, but I like the name anyway so I've kept it), keep as flagship for my entire career 2. Endeavor to never fire a single cannon shot my entire career, using strictly boarding tactics and keeping other ships to sell along with their cargo 3. While money can be made through selling ships and cargo, the REAL money is in politics....reshaping the Carribbean by sacking certain ports and turning them for other nations, making sure every last corner of the map has representation from all four countries to ensure high naval activity, particularly during wartime (which is to say, _all_ of the time) 4. All military payroll and treasure ships are to be captured on sight no questions asked, regardless of which promotion I'm seeking 5. Only dance with wife and/or someone else if I need an item or map 6. Accumulate enough wealth with a light enough crew so that they never mutiny and you can sail for decades free from worry 7. Only go to Campeche/Vera Cruz when absolutely necessary (like with lost cities). Fuck those places way out west. 8. Retire at the port where the wife is located after getting 126 achievement points.....obviously the family doesn't factor in to any of the above points.....I do that stuff on the side coincidentally. :)

St Kitts to San Juan is way out of torpedo range; you're looking at like 400 km, not the upper limit of torpedoes at 30ish. You'd need to be much closer, practically on top of Puerto Rico to fire.
If somebody was to remake this game in open source (perhaps minus copyrighted artworks and cinematics plus some new features like open world and procedurally generated map), I personally would be as supportive of this project as one can get, and I'm positive many other people would be as well. If that is what you've asked.

Pirates was my first video game, spent at least 1000 hours overall on that game, incredible.
My uncle got me pirates when I was 7 I am 13 now, but I still enjoy it to this day

You can still pick it up and play it anytime you want. I prefer GOG versions of very old games because they usually fix them so you don't have to.
