I thought that it was 2018 when Michigan State was knocked out of the National Championship race by losing to Nebraska, but that happened in 2015. For what it's worth, in 2018 Michigan State WAS ranked 24th the week before they lost to Nebraska, but fell out of the rankings after losing to Ohio State.
