Little clarification - the ending text where it says "concurrent players broke 100k" - this was meant to reference Steam in particular. We believe the console players are about equal to the public Steam concurrency data. Sorry that that was not clearer.
An entrancing and wonderful video series as always! I greatly hope one day you will be able to do the same with Arenanet and Guild Wars/GW2. So many things in this second video echoed what I have seen as a veteran of their second game.
DE "We created a slot machine.....that was not our design intention at all.. it took us two days to take it out." EA: "I see, and how exactly did you create this slot machine?"
Well now we can probably expect some sort of Star Wars tamagochi thing where we can buy various cosmetics to equip and trade with other people. Oh and it comes out of a lootbox.
23:10 This is what sets Warframe apart from 90% of the games out there. Most companies would sit there and go "oh, someone pulled the lever 200 times? Fuck it, keep it in". The fact that a company, any company, would give up money because they look at their player well being and go "we can't do that to people" is AMAZINGLY rare. I gotta give props to a decision like that. The gaming industry needs more people like Sheldon that understand the phrase "just because we can, doesn't mean we should".
No joke: I almost cried when he said that. It's the first really genuine "I care" phrase I've heard from a game developer in a really long time. It's the equivalent of waking up in a field of flowers after 10 years of living in a shithole.
I can guarantee you 99% of developers feel this way. The problem they would face at other companies (namely, those controlled by publishers), they don't have the autonomy to change it. Because Digital Extremes maintains independence, they have control over the business end of the operation. Whereas working for a big AAA publisher, they would be overruled, attempting to change a profitable sink.
I think it is very telling of the state of triple a gaming nowadays that a developer being *disappointed* in accidentally creating a super profitable slot machine, is NOT the norm.
@vin 950 It seems great that they removed a slot machine for the pets. But they didn't need it when they left in things like the mod packs (warframe.fandom.com/wiki/Mod_Pack). Literal lootboxes that charge up to $4 worth of plat, that the community KNOW are cancer. Despite years of complaints, they are still in the game. Because like you said, "its incredibly rare for any business to back away from something that is profitable for them".
I doubt mod packs are profitable for them because almost nobody buys them, specially when something like Transmutation exists for free. I agree that they should be deleted, though; it's a noobtrap and many new players may fall for it.
@@ivdrip-r2r Attracting new players is a prime concern for DE. There should not be money traps like the mod packs for new players to fall into in the first place. While we can disagree whether or not they are profitable, the fact that we agree they should not exist at all (as does a large part of the community) means DE really should look into finally removing them, or at the very least people should not give DE such a free pass in terms of consumer relations. They are one (if not THE) best game development companies around. Would hate to see them become EA because no one spoke up.
Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is explained by incompetence". I don't think mod packs exist because DE wants to turn a profit off of clueless newbs, but because they simply forgot to remove it. I agree that the players should be more vocal, but more often than not, the forums are flodded with other things, and I think even most players forgot that mod packs existed to begin with.
@@ivdrip-r2r Personally, instead of an all out removal of mod packs, they should have a limit on how many you can buy separately a day. Say the limit of 1 or 2 a day so new players are restrained from buying in bulk and wasting so much plat. Besides buying with plat there are other ways to get them. Baro is still able to sell them with currency earned in game. DE can still sell bundles that include packs (like the Starter Pack which is limited to once per account). While I have only been playing for a few months and rarely ever seen the Twitch Streams, DE could give packs out for those who watch the stream. I don't think that would be so detrimental to the WF economy and because its free, people won't be losing any Plat. Just an idea. With these options, DE wouldn't have to erase mod packs completely and the limit system will help make sure new players don't buy plat in large quantities to buy packs, thinking packs are the quickest way to get the best mods. Doing so, new players will also take to the internet, searching how to get more packs a day to bypass the limit and in doing so, discovering that its easier to just buy the mods from other players or do the missions themselves.
Yo I've been your long time subscriber, but I never realized that you were one of the guys who popularize coptering. In a way, you were one of many inventors of parkour 2.0. Now that's cool as hell
You can get extra slots via plat, which you can trade items for instead of using your own money. That's not exploitation. That's just you being lazy and then wanting to complain about it.
@@cat-em3mj he passed away from cancer i believe, i dont recall how long ago however he was(imo) a awesome youtuber, but one of those whom you either loved to watch or didnt like at all, due to how blunt he was about things he liked and things he thought needed to be fixed or removed in games
TheCynicalB Reb also helps with bug hunting, and works directly with the dev team testing the game. She does that along with the voice acting for Lotus and community manager stuff. I know you are just being an ass, but Reb does a lot more than just the community management side.
Listening to the designer talk about the kubrow colour purchases was interesting. When he saw someone had made 200 purchases, they canned it. A bioware employed stated a mass effect player had spent $15,000 on RnG crates...so E.A over exploited it....That's the difference right there...
Except they still have loot boxes in Warframe in the form of mod packs, and people have complained about them for 5,6 years, and they're still in the game.
@@glowerworm The RNG mod packs were removed from the game years ago. Not sure if it was before your first comment, but it definitely happened before your second.
"How do you treat boredom? With ambition." And that, right there, is the core of what they've gotten right. Which they can only do by not having a big publisher hanging over them and chasing short-term profit.
"Oh my dear god, we created a slot machine, so it was a couple days for us to take it out" - Digital Extremes Other Devs in 2018: we love creating slot machines utilizing the skinner box experiment research to exploit people!
Loot boxes aren't slot machines. Slot machines are gambling. Gambling is bad. Loot boxes are "Surprise Mechanics". --EA The fact that when DE realized that what they had done was 1) A GREAT source of income 2) Technically speaking, gambling and 3) Unethical in a game not rated M or above (checks Warframe's ESRB rating...) Huh, Warframe IS rated M... well... moving on the fact that they removed it shows how different they are from other devolopers--it shows how much they care about their game, about their players, about their community.
Hell even now, 5 years later, the game has changed again, but maintains that tight knit connection to the community and extravaganza and deep storytelling
OMG the emotions... I remember everything. Trying to run this on my very old laptop, spending the only money I could from my allowance to become a founder because I saw something in it (the only game I've ever spent on before its proper launch), the one corpus tileset, the feedback on the UI in the forums, the coptering phase... my long hiatus due to that very same laptop not handling anything anymore. Then randomly picking up the game by downloading it on a PS4 of a friend while I was on vacation, just to see how it was, and, never abandoning it ever since. Then Rebecca, a beam of light in everything she does, the Devstreams, Prime Time, then Second Dream, then the Plains... I'm so fond of this team, at times they feel like family, at times I watch their community events more than play the game haha Steve, Rebecca, and everyone else, thank you so much for what you've done and what you do. Please keep following your passions and ambitions, please keep being fair in your F2P and keep listening to yourselves and not just the community. Keep doing what you are doing, because it's something truly special, unique, that touches many hearts. The hearts of the Tenno!
31:34 "You Did It. The Crazy Son of a Gun, You Did It" moment with the 1999 update coming this december. the game, based on og ideas of Dark Sector, came back to the more "our days" setting of the actual Dark Sector that came for an inspiration. a castle built on ruins, and god those ruins are spicy and rich to dig in
A year ago i installed artstation on my phone, and with curiosity i checked the 'jobs' segment. And there i saw that DE is hiring people to work on Warframe. I was 16 at that time and i couldn't even legally make an artstation account. But i know what i want to do. I got accepted in an animation university last month and hopefully will work with you guys in the far future! :D
That black screen and the music at the end had a super sad vibe. I expected something like: "Over 38 Million People have played Warframe" "Most of them are now registered loosers." "Don't be a looser." "Be a Fashionframe."
"They listened to the community" "Instead of NERFing this exploit the team knew the community was trying to tell them something" "Instead of saying NO you can't do that, we embraced it, the Philosophy is instead of smacking their hand and saying no that's not my vision, we say How can we embrace it and how can we bring it into the game" Listening and Reading the Reactions from the Community -and that's why Digital Extremes is doing it so much better. (Far better then Bungie) maybe Bungo will watch this. Doubt they would listen though.
I read about Destiny's development, and it was screwed from the beginning. Still can't believe it turned out as it did, but even more, I can't believe that Bungie is more to blame than Activision. In short, Warframe is the game Destiny "wanted to be when was a little kid". What Destiny actually became, is far different.
Dude they said that about coptering but coptering is completely gone. You get a small boost in the air that makes you go higher a tiny bit, it was legit completely removed.
Great work. I really liked the part where Rebecca talked about needing to throw curve-balls to the community. While I wasn't actively playing Warframe when they released the cinematic quests, when I did eventually get to them it was one of my most memorable gaming experiences. I thought I didn't care about the story of Warframe or my Tenno, they were just conduits for a badass space-ninja power fantasy. Then I finally reached The Second Dream quest, and became deeply invested in the story and who/what my Tenno is. The most recent cinematic quest, The Apostasy Prologue, provoked a strong emotional reaction from me. I encourage anyone trying Warframe to try to progress far enough to reach these quests, which are buried deep into the game's progression. They are worth the work. Also, the Plains of Eidolon was an excellent addition IMO, I absolutely love how the open world enhances the combat of the game. I have a catcher's glove ready for TennoCon 2018, eagerly awaiting DE's next curve-ball.
Blast Tyrant as someone who has tried Warframe a couple of times, around PS4 launch and around a year ago, and bounced off both times, the quests sound just what Id like. It would be great if some existed to serve as an extended tutorial. The game does look crazy complex and daunting for new comers. I love the movement and look of the game but find myself wishing there was just a way to enjoy those aspects in a single player campaign, THEN maybe dip into the rest of what’s on offer.
The moment Warframe realy got me, was the second dream quest. It was not only cinematic, but used the story potential within Warframe in an unexpected way. It surprised me, not only for the awesome lore, but also emotionaly. I was pretty disappointed by planes of eidolon, because the lore was not realy expanded, but it made me look up the wiki for that, so it kinda counts too^^. Sure you can change missions, add new ones, but what always sticks with me is the lore.
For me, the Second Dream was almost poetic in its metaphor. All this time we've wondered what the Tenno are, and the answer? Kids masquerading as Warframe-clad warriors, *playing* as Warframes. The Tenno are literally us.
Second Dream was something that I ended up liking WAY more than I expected to. A combination of giving actual character to something I'd spent so many hours with and giving a perfectly sensible lore justification to a number of things that had previously been dismissed as just "because video game" made for a really good time.
I was lucky enough to not have seen anyone press 5 until I finished the second dream. So when I did finish I was so mindf*cked. Thats why until now I never press 5 when im in a mission with low mr players to not spoil them.
Rewatching this these days when James has stepped down as CEO, Steve has been promoted to take his place, Rebecca his and Megan hers is lovely. And man, hearing TotalBiscuit talk about the game brings a tear (or several) to my eye. It was through him I first heard of the game.
Her name is Octavia and she's an incredibly interesting take on the bard class. You make your own songs, with a beat, bass and melody. Then each part is its own ability, with the beat dealing AOE damage, the bass coming from a rolling ball of speakers that distracts enemies, and the melody gives various buffs based on doing actions in-sync with the music. For example, crouch-dancing with the music gives you an invisibility buff. It's complicated, but rewarding when you get it all to come together.
Keep in mind that the sequencer is a bit restricted or so that's what my music friends say. I don't use it much but you can do a quick search for "Warframe Mandachord Restrictions" and read up on its shortcomings. Great idea though, just needs some tweaking.
It's tempo locked and only works in a pentatonic scale. This is so when 2 Octavia's party up, each playing their song, the cacophony isn't SO overwhelming lol Unfortunately, modern jusic doesn't use pentatonic scales a whole lot, limiting pop songs.
Mr Sleepy that's not p2w-ish that is p2w in its actual form, p2w-ish is how they do it now you can buy or farm but ethier both won't be worth anything if it's not upgraded. Players consider it fair cuz irl currency in-game is trade able but you can't deny it has the p2w aura still cuz NOOBS or dum dumbs still call it p2w.
Estroll what's this about? OK dare accepted DOTA2, LoL? If I'm wrong then fair enough I don't really play those games I mean the genre of those games but if you'll ask me is most AMMORPG ,MMORPG, Vehicular mmo games, hero shooters they have all that quote P2W AURA quote thing cuz they're f2p. Btw I feel like I'm missing something why did you even dared me to spout out something? Did you feel I'm trashing wf?
joe junior Never opened DOTA2, or heard about it's trinkets market? As for why I dare you, well, other than testing your grammar, it's because you use the (commonly derogatory) word "p2w" on a widely accepted module in the industry, and only admitted that most f2p has the so called aura when questioned, so I was worried people who never played wf would read your comment and thought it to be a game that can be described as "p2w-ish" compared to other games of this genre, when it's actually the opposite. TLDR: yup, you are trashing and I ain't taking
Estroll well thanks for correcting the dota aspect since Im just always watching people play it and friends get some extra cosmetics from passes so I never really went deep into it and on the grammar side I don't know why people check grammar on TH-cam but in my view internet is like the local streets... You can do as much informal talks and lingos you want, I'm not here for business matters or business presentation. And the trashing part well it's over thinking in your part if you ask me, people on TH-cam or people looking first into the game already calling it p2w without really realizing it due to how the market is presented. People see you can just buy a gun etc by Prem currency bought using irl money it's p2w (btw that is just abbreviation of pay-to-win nothing special about it) but guys who actually played knows it that you can farm then build it ,btw I play warframe but unlike others I recognized the fact that it gives the impression of being a p2w and acknowledge that it doesn't work the same as p2w games for the devs allowed gaining things in-game that can be bought by irl cash.
Best community management I've ever seen in the entire gaming industry (hands down). Warframe devs are super passionate about their game and they are really in touch with their community. Even veteran players are quite friendly with newbies and help them a lot. WF Wiki is possibly one of the best wikis ever made and is always updated just a few minutes after each update. Even Tennogen skins that could be seen as "paid mods" are incredibly successful and welcome by the community.
I've only been playing this game for about a month or so and it's now one of my favorite games of all time. The amount of passion coming from the devs is truly admirable. I've also never seen a gaming community quite like Warframe's. So many kind people willing to help each other is something I have never really seen. It's really awesome to see where this game has come from, to be what it is now.
Warframe is truly a game where you first step in out of curiosity and then realize that it's a really fun and different game which in turn entices you to stay. In the end when you look back, you realize that you're not gonna truly leave that newfound place ever. I started playing in April 2013 (14th of April to be specific) and I've never stopped playing the game. I did take breaks every now and then but will I truly leave the game ? I don't think so. So far I'm 2050 hours in the game (and no intention to stop!) and looking back it amuses me how I thought almost five years ago "Well it's a fun game but I doubt I'll play it much": Oh boy, I was soooo wrong!
Know the feeling bud(3 years playing the game), people hear Warframe players talk and look at them with the weird eye look, so it's hard to explain this experience. Now!, I am a veteran and still very active gamer (I don't care, I play anything), and once I saw the relays, the community, the lingo used for the overall game, modding(yes! it requires a bit of math) & Meta synergy among frames in a team of 4.. I took a knee and said: "this one is it!.. what I've been looking for all those years". It's not because of hype, it's not because it's trendy... it's because it's a gelatin mix of everything good in all games into one... like I said; hard to describe. You have to try it and be as confused and amazed like me at this phenomenon, even after 3 years.
Kangwa Master you know whats even cooler, the fact that they listen to us like if your dreamed of something beautiful and found that it was perfect for the game its a nice chance it will be added somehow. I was like, what if this game had james heller from prototype 2, then nidus. Ive officially am ready to sign my soul to them at any time.
This game had me break down crying. Really, I was shedding tears. I wasn't sure of it as first, I didn't know if I'd stay forever, but I knew it had potential. I could see it. It wasn't until I first visited the Void three years ago and saw the beautiful aesthetic along with the music that I became fully committed. In that moment I knew this was something big. What I didn't know was that I'd commit nearly 3,000 hours of my life to Warframe and counting. It's free to play, it ran perfectly on my potato PC, the microtransactions were fair, the community and friends I met were so helpful, it appealed to my personal tastes, and on top of all that it felt - and feels - so genuine. I feel like the studio has a real sense of humor and humanity to it, like they're people who want nothing more than to make an awesome videogame and have fun doing it. I bet all the publishers and gaming giants who turned down Digital Extremes feel stupid now, because Warframe is nothing short of a behemoth in its own right, laughing at them. Just in sheer size this game and its company are competing with some of the largest AAA studios on the planet, both in community engagement, game size and player count. Warframe is not only a giant "Fuck You" to the very concept of greed and standards, but also definitive proof that if you have a dream, a wish, you can get it done no matter what, like it can and WILL happen. We are an army of nearly 40 million registered losers who share a common vision, to be a part of one of the most incredible successes in gaming history. We stand proud and mock all those who doubt a person's dreams and wishes. We don't care about money, we don't care about the meta, we don't care about the industry standard the man sets, or any norm. All we care about is fun. We care about having the most badass gaming experience known to man. We stick next to eachother, never giving up on a common interest. This is our labor of love nearly 20 years in the making, and we fully intend to have it go until the end. Digital Extremes nearly died giving life to us, and all 40 million of us are eternally grateful because of that. We are Tenno. We are Warframe, and Digital Extremes is the caring mother that will continue to support this child they've birthed until death. The tidal wave is already crashing against the shore, and we can't be stopped. We'll continue bashing our way in until we've achieved world domination. Long live the greatest F2P game in the world, now and forever.
"What have we done... Obviously that was insanely profitable, but that's not what our design philosophy is about." I can't say I love this company. I can't say they inspire me. These things have all been said before. When something piques my interest this much, I put a lot of effort into really describing how I feel, striving to say something that hasn't been said. Sometimes, words can't describe that feeling, and I end up just making various hums and noises to express my interest. This is one of those times, to an extreme degree. This company means so much to me. In this life that has been shaped by video games more than anything else, more than religion, more than school or work, Digital Extremes has arrived in the open hangar of my peak years into gaming. They have interested me in the most valuable time something can interest me: the years in which I am rationally thinking about certain things, saying which decisions are good and bad and why they are that way. The years where my mental capacity can really intercept certain ideas and tightly attach to them. What I mean to say is that DE has piqued the peak of my interest. Thank you, to everyone who puts their time and effort into this company.
20:30 when you make it into the video but not the credits feelsbadman Great documentary though. Was fun learning about how the game was made. It was nice to represent the crazy fun aspect of the game too.
I knew I saw your footage! and multiple times too. You might not be in the credits but let me thank you for all that you have done. Representing the fun, whacky and experimental side of the game is no small task (+memes
Let us hope raids will be ebtter in a diffrent way when they come back, the reason i ddint really play them is because it wasant diffrwnt enough from the rest of the game and they were a bit linear for my taste in a raid.
Those were credits for patreon supporters though, not people to offered up their footage. It was pretty cool seeing my footage in the video though, especially because I was like "Wait, that's my old color scheme... Like exactly, what are the chances... Oh wait that's me!"
I played warframe back before any of the crazy movement was added and could not get into it at all, but I gave it another try this week and Its so much more enjoyable now
in what way are they a cash grab? They're random stuff that you get in-game from missions, and can re-roll with stuff you get in-game from other missions. The only thing rivens have to do with platinum is the booming player trading market that sprung up around them, which... WE all did, not DE. If rivens are a cash grab, then we, the community, turned it into that. DE didn't create them for that purpose.
Literally everyone hated how rivens worked at first, if they weren't using it to make a lot of money they would have removed them and fixed the problems before releasing them. Here think of it this way, oh hey you can do sorties for a chance to get a riven that has a chance to be the right type of riven you want for a chance to have an easy challange for a chance to get the specific weapon you want for a chance to get good stats for a chance to farm kuva and reroll it OR just buy it from someone else with our in-game premium currency. Rivens have only made the game worse and they cost a shit ton because DE did not set any prices or even guideline for the riven market. I am glad its making a lot of money for DE because they are an overall a good company, but some of their choices are super rushed, scummy, or downright wrong. I mean you can decide if 110 million gross income after 50 million dollars spent on the company expenses in 2017 is a lot of money and thats before POE when a massive amount of new players joined and since then spent money on the game. Thats a shit ton of money left over and they are only getting more, just saying.
The failing of Lunaro is that you made an air hockey table and gave it its own room... And then told people they don't get to pick their oppenent unless they make friends first. Air hockey or fooseball are not going to be the most popular activities on campus, but if you put them in places where people will be waiting around, people are extremely thankful for the distraction. Stick it in the relays. Maybe make a scaled down placement chamber in the dojo, like with the dueling room, but something you walk past while going other places. To make Lunaro a success, you need to think about how to make air hockey a success. If I wasn't allowed to feel like I won something with every mission; if I had to be better than veteran meta gamers, I would have given up a long time ago. Instead I get to make slow progress, which is what I need.
I like this concept too, and I agree it would be good to put it in both relays and Dojos, something to do while you wait for people to repsond to trade offers that you can pop out of without hassle would make trading a little less dull than it can be at times
I just started playing Warframe yesterday. Within 3 hours courtesy of Twitch Prime I had Trinity Prime and am already running a melee centric support build and I can't get enough of this game. This game makes me want to spend money on it just so DE can keep adding to this beast they have created. Thank you so much for letting your ambition come first in this money hungry world. You've really created a true gem!
"This game makes me want to spend money on it just so DE can keep adding to this beast they have created." Same man, same. Felt that way ever since the beta.
You forgot the most important part of the development. Making CLEM and GRAKATA!!!!, but seriously show some love for a grineer so awesome he needs only say his name. CLEM!!!!!
Great as always! I didn't know about the genesis of warframe's movement system. That's a fascinating story, though. Most developers would have just nerfed it, I imagine.
Jason DiCioccio Oh they did. There was a dip in the distance that coptering can get you, as they rather averaged it out so that every melee weapon can decently copter. Then they added aerial melee, which wasn't as good at covering distance, but was directional. Then bullet jumping came along, and good riddance to all those half-baked attempts.
Maaan, I miss coptering! The moment I learned how to do it, it felt so fucking awesome. It can kinda hurt your left arm and your pinky after doing it a lot. The new parkour 2.0 system has less stress than coptering.
Sean Crosser ah, interesting. I guess the key is that they kept the general concept. The whole concept itself was a bug, so they could have just fixed it. In the end, though, they kept it, turning that former bug into what is now a polished feature, and one that's a defining characteristic of the Warframe experience. I love stories like that :)
Jason DiCioccio Yeah, I can't imagine going back to how it was pre-copter. There were so many things added after, that basic run and jump (with stamina limit!!!!) would be so far away from what Warframe is.
Yeah, although there's one part that was omitted and that was even the movement system that had coptering also had wall running and such. So even back then the movement system wasn't really like any other third person shooter game, besides maybe Gunz or something.
Right here 23:10 is how a real person responds to the problem of video game gambling. Shame on you AAA game designers, your souls are blackened with greed.
Grandmaster checking in. Seeing those shots of the old tree brought back a lot of memories of watching the game rapidly evolve as DE actively talked with us. I remember in the early days of the mod system that replaced the tree that there were some DE devs in the Design Council chat actively iterating on the mod system live, taking suggestions from us on how to improve it and seeing something small I had suggested end up in the game in a hot fix just a short while later was so damn cool. It's been one hell of a ride since those early days and it's incredible what Warframe has become.
I remember when I got a closed beta invite in my mail back then, wondering what the heck was that game. I played a good while, even talked to friends about it which they dismissed at the time. Once I got to the point where the tree required money to power up your gear further, I stopped and forgot about it. Then a few months later, one of the friends I had talked to about Warframe sends me a message telling me to try the game, to which I respond "Why didn't you try it when I did?". He had apparently forgot entirely I had mentionned it. Went back into it then played on, buying the Master founder pack. This is literally one of my most played game on Steam. I've seen this game go from such humble beginnings to the state it is now. How ackward movement used to be and how the UI was archaic and somewhat inefficient. How the only tileset was very moody and dark, giving the impression you were inflitrating a world that was on the brink of despair. How everything felt barebone and cobbled together, as if it was just trying to find its footing. And honestly, there's something incredible in how the game evolved, both technically and on a meta level. Now, you go into missions bearing colors and accessories, wielding literally hundreds of different weapons. The world feels alive not only with the Lotus as the mission control but the NPCs, the relays, the quests and how, in a strange way, that world that was once on the brink is now having a second chance at life since the first few Tenno awakened. The setting and game evolved together, from something dark and desperate to something glorious and alive. Because the Tenno woke up and stood together; they fought back that darkness and despair and lit up the flame of hope back into the denizens of the system. It's why something like the Second Dream hit me so damn hard when it happened and it's also why it's so very satisfying that the gamble I took 5 years ago on that game paid off so well, along with all the others who did the same.
To this day Warframe is the only F2P game where I've never once felt like my money was wasted, even when I took a break. I gladly drop money on it not to get ahead, but to help keep the lights on because it's such a unique thing in the era of modern gaming and needs to keep going to serve as an example of how to be a good company. I did take a break from it for a while because the grind got a bit much for me (back when you had multiple layers of key farming to get to the corrupted mods) but I came back a few months ago and it's like night and day. So much of that experience from when I skipped out has been streamlined and cleaned up. It's astounding how much work DE has done to this game during my absence to fix most of my gripes. It is still an issue that you pretty much have to have the wiki open on a separate screen to look up where to get things and get better breakdowns on how abilities work, but thankfully the community has done a stellar job keeping breaking all that information down. The new quests were just astounding and coming back and experiencing The War Within felt so appropriate for how I was feeling about the game. Much like how the discovery of Spoiler Mode changes the underlying nature of the game's world, all the game changes have done the same mechanically. DE's love for the game and the community still shine through as brilliantly as it did on day one.
RIght now, you just need to ask question in Region Chat & you will get the answer from other player & somehow they want to help you for FREE , THE BEST COMMUNITY XD
Godspeed, elder tenno. I wish only that I had been employed when the founder rank was still available, and had been able to contribute as well. That Excalibur Prime would be so precious to the lorenut in me, and it kills me to not have any kind of access... but I understand. Those who were able to make that leap and help when it was needed most *deserve* this. I only ask that you adore your excal prime just a little bit extra next time you have a look at it, for those of us who wanted founder but couldn't afford it.
As a new player I absolutely love this... at first I was put off a little as there was so much but I stuck with it.... been playing for a week now and I'm glad I did... have the switch version and play it at work and on commutes now... still cant believe how good it is!!!
I got into Warframe because of a British friend who found about the game thanks to TB. I saw him play it and I was like "Hey, what's that game you're playing ?". (Almost) five years later and 2050 hours of Warframe later I'm still there and I don't think I'll ever leave :)
I was a bit skeptical if this game was for me even after I watched TB's first impressions of it. However, Warframe appears to be one of those games that he kept coming back to every year. O_O

Imagine what would happen if PewDiePie made a Warframe video!
At the end when he was playing in the Plains, It felt like watching a baby trying to run. I was like "Come on! You can jump over that river! You got this!" He fell and I was like "aww.... you'll get it next try. :D"
it gave me a big wave of nostalgia, and then i realized i've played this game for almost a decade now (got it in 2015).... god, i'm getting old. but damn, even the plains on their own has changed so much. The UIs have been overhauled so many times, we now have nightwave instead of random alerts (i do kinda miss those random alerts though), etc. It's insane.
This brings tears to my eyes. 2024. So much has happened. But the people behind the experience have NOT lost their ideas, not lost their principles, not lost what makes them great.
The fact that the movement comes from an exploit makes my jaw drop. That is some next-level intuition to implement it as a feature. I've never seen this level of community involvement. I'm a NinTenno so I'm just getting started, but the way you traverse the map is immediately the thing that stands out and has me intrigued!
Warframe has a lot of nice people because they know the pain of learning the game. They know their brain's just can't handle it, like it's gonna explode. all the hardships that an old player got will think: Oh god...this game' progression system's bad....I have to find a new player and help him. And the new player will be blown away and starts to go away or starts to play the game. and if they play the game they will also think that they also need to help the others. it's like a master to student bond thing. Or maybe more like a family bond. THAT is the REAL BEAUTY of this game. It showed us that We're not just gamers. We're humans, we Thrive not just on our own. But with others around us. And Most of the player base do not see this as a reason of why DE do not update it's progression system. And maybe some of the developers did not notice it.
Dontus powerus yeah either that or its because that DE is canadian Just kidding what ur saying is true the learning curve is pretty big and we help each other to remove that curve
Just out of curiosity, does Steve still do his Sunday Stream ? For you who don't know, Steve's Sunday Stream is his stream where he created a new account, so he can take notes of the progress newer player has to do. Of course all this while still paying attention to criticism and suggestion in the chat.
"obviously that was insanely profitable, but it was not our design intent" that, right there, is why this game is good very few companies care too much about vision anymore, only money
The story at around 22:50 is amazing to listen to. To hear people that would benefit from exploitative microtransactions feel regret and rush to change them for the sake of their players. All of it years before things like lootboxes and whether or not they're gambling became topic of widespread debate. These guys so that it was, and did what was best for the players. Happy to be giving Warframe a second try.
Wow! where he talks about their day long stint of having what he called a slot machine. That hit me deep because so many companies don't realize or don't care how impressionable people are. They take advantage , but when a company take the moral high ground on stuff like this it gives me hope.
Thank god I started Warframe after January 10th (I started on January 13th) I was going to quit playing the closed beta exactly after 2 more days because of the pay wall but once they made things more free to play I decided to stay because of the game's potencial and became a Master Founder. :)
Yes one of the best spend money in my life. After the founders program ended. DE sended to every master and grand master founder a T-Shirt (the first T-Shirts they made) with Founder and Warframe written on them (and the original Lotus symbol on the back), absolutely free as a gift from them.
Cool. When Umbra tho. In all seriousness, I love this insight on what the devs and everyone who worked with DE had to go through and how they kept trying to improve on what was Dark Sector (Now Warframe...HELL YES!). It showed how resilient they were and how much faith and effort they put into this one game. And thank you for making this documentary, My love for this brilliant game has grown even more.
I watched the first and second parts back to back, and halfway through part one I hopped into Warframe for the first time in months. I listened to the story of this independent studio desperately trying to get their vision made, how they almost fell apart, how Warframe was a hail mary shot in the dark as I was running through some of the game's 5 year anniversary event missions. Warframe is not my favorite game, and it annoys the hell out of me that it is a game of tons of systems kinda jankily bolted together, but goddamn after hearing the story behind this game and studio, I have the utmost respect for Digital Extremes and the people working there. They and their game are not perfect. They've had missteps. But I can't deny that there's a heart and soul behind Warframe that I don't see from a lot of other games or studios. Instead of dictating to their community how their game should be played, DE has a dialogue with the community. Sometimes systems don't change, but a lot of times they do. Keep at it DE. I'm not a ride or die fan of Warframe, just a casual one, but I wish y'all the best. Also, Sheldon Carter and anyone who's worked with him is amazing. I wasn't around when Kubrows got introduced, but it shows a genuine care for the community to pull a microtransaction that's proven to be profitable because of concern for players' well-being. I wish more studios would follow that example.
That, both parts, is a really good documentary. To emphasize just one aspect of many: never during the whole video is there the slightest hint of insincerity on the part of Noclip's presentation or narration. No air of condescension, no irony, no patronizing self-distancing tone. Just sympathetic, favorable curiosity, and a serious down-to-earth analysis. That alone made for a very pleasant viewing experience. Thanks.
I haven't played Warframe but I was curious of DE's story since I used to be a UT fan. Thanks for your work Danny, this is series is excellent and I look forward to all of them.
spacejacket PLAY IT NOOOWWW. If you're on PC I will literally walk you through the beginning so that you're less confused. New player experience can be a little rough flying blind, still.
I highly recommend playing it. Not just to check out the mechanics of the game but also to understand that EVERY frame, weapon, and companion have their own uniqueness that lends to the game's success.
Amazing Documentary. And its amazing to see how they turned the game around and listened to the community. Also hearing Totalbiscuit's voice shed me some tears. I miss that guy so much.
After a very disappointing Destiny 2 experience I was looking for a game to scratch that itch when I came across Warframe. It's been a week now that I've started playing and I literally cannot get enough, its way more fun than I ever imagined it would be. It's nice to watch this documentary and see that the people behind the game you love are just awesome!
It is so weird to watch this, I've been playing wf since 2015 and I just feel privileged to be a part of this crazy community. There is also some weird sense of pride in watching this video eventhough I'm just a player, guess the pride comes from 3600 hours spent in the game and the feeling that I'm on the inside, being a part of group of people that understand this super complex awesome game. Great job DE and high five to the creator of this documentary, awesome job man.
I love the world of warframe and have been silently observing the community sense it’s big release on PS4. I have put over 1,000 hours into the game but have for the most part been an off and on player. Every time I go on a break there is always something that brings me back in to the strange yet lovable world of Warframe. I even got one of my friends hooked on it, little did I know that getting him addicted to the game would help him overcome his social anxiety. As he played the game he met people with problems just like him that truly understood what he was going through and the community became almost like his family. Before he started playing his anxiety was so bad that me and his only other friend being in the room overwhelmed him, but now because he’s made other friends he’s able to feel comfortable and secure when we’re both around, he’s even been able to befriend some of the people from our area that we have introduced him to. He still has some issues but thanks to Warframe he has made progress. There aren’t enough words in the world to explain how grateful I am to the community and the developers of the game for giving him a place to belong to and allowing him to create a life outside of the video game world. He truly loves this game and it’s community so all I can say is thank you for being a friend to my friend. Keep doing what you’ve been doing devs and you won’t have to worry about the future because the community that you have built up around you game won’t hesitate to rush to your aid if you should ever need it.
I came to watch this on the eve of Tennocon 2022, as a Warframe Content Creator, and it makes me so happy to see their huge success. I am so proud to be a part of the Warframe community. I ❤ Digital Extremes and the entire Warframe Team!
Zanagoth I’m not gonna lie I just sat there staring at the screen as I watched you stare down Vay Hek with a goddamn spear before one shotting the meme himself. Just holy shit.
Holy crap, this documentary was really well made. It definitely gives me a much better appreciation for the game as it is today. I just started playing a little over a week ago (tried it on the switch a while back just for giggles), and I'm definitely beyond hooked. I'm glad DE continues to thrive today. And they have absolutely earned it!
what I like about warframe is how the game becomes better the more you play it You begin to see game mechanics, you begin to see lore the second dream comes up a lot because it changes your perspective on the game. Up to that point you see warframe one way and out of the blue you begin to see so much more

This is one of my favorite NoClip stories. I play Warframe because you can tell when a game is made with love. Warframe is one of those games.

UPVOTE! To the top!
No joke: I almost cried when he said that. It's the first really genuine "I care" phrase I've heard from a game developer in a really long time. It's the equivalent of waking up in a field of flowers after 10 years of living in a shithole.
so sad that having a conscience is something considered praiseworthy in this industry...
Real shit.

RIP John Peter Bain
@Shikashi Uses his voice yeah, he died of cancer earlier this year.
Bungie: “You can’t do that.”
DE: “Let’s embrace that.”
My take away as well.
0utta S1TE Bungie not being greedy assholes is very risky. 🙄
From what I've learned, it seems it's more like Activision is bound by Bungie.
That's why Warframe is starting to eat Destiny 2's lunch.
0utta S1TE Activision is actually giving Bungie as much freedom as they want, Bungie themselves said, that making content is "to hard" for them.
Wow, just wow. Thank you so much for actually using my Copter Tutorial footage, it really means a lot to me!
Yo I've been your long time subscriber, but I never realized that you were one of the guys who popularize coptering. In a way, you were one of many inventors of parkour 2.0. Now that's cool as hell
ma boi n00b coming in clutch *gg*
You also helped Warframe become what it is! Keep on creating guides and quality content :)
What you do means a lot to us :)
how does it feel to be one of the pioneers of parkour 2.0
A company that willingly acknowledges that it could exploit it's players for money and chooses not to is amazing.
Absolutely. It's called integrity, which most big companies don't have.
Rivens.
that's all player trading m8 , u don't pay DE for them .
You can get extra slots via plat, which you can trade items for instead of using your own money. That's not exploitation. That's just you being lazy and then wanting to complain about it.
I Think mammon was referencing the lotto attempt at having a random hair color after pulling a leaver.

Space Mom has a potty mouth. Big time.
Grow up son, shes just a community manager that does nothing in the development of the game besides be used to bring out the thirst you have.
you do realize that the community managers are usually the ones to bring feedback to the devs right? oh wait no you dont.

The fact that when DE realized that what they had done was
1) A GREAT source of income
2) Technically speaking, gambling
and 3) Unethical in a game not rated M or above (checks Warframe's ESRB rating...) Huh, Warframe IS rated M... well... moving on

Need to add this in here,
8:45 RIP TotalBiscuit. Your contribution to the existence of this wonderful game will never be forgotten.
John Bowen You can play the entirety of the game without other people, but people make it more interesting at times

Bravo, DE. Here's to another 5 years.
Sean Crosser no heres to 50
Here's to another five years!
here's to another 11 years, mate!

Welcome to the fight, Tenno.
Welcome Tenno. Glad you could make it.
This is so when 2 Octavia's party up, each playing their song, the cacophony isn't SO overwhelming lol
Unfortunately, modern jusic doesn't use pentatonic scales a whole lot, limiting pop songs.
*"Pay to win-ish" Mechanics early in Warframe*
*Players don't like it*
DE: *Removes it right away*
Mr Sleepy that's not p2w-ish that is p2w in its actual form, p2w-ish is how they do it now you can buy or farm but ethier both won't be worth anything if it's not upgraded. Players consider it fair cuz irl currency in-game is trade able but you can't deny it has the p2w aura still cuz NOOBS or dum dumbs still call it p2w.
joe junior Name one f2p game without "p2w aura", I dare you
Estroll what's this about?

The Game changer
not really a game changer but ain't let utter crap get past him and a witty guy RIP
@@M4TTYN no, he was a game changer. The industry listened to him. People listened to him.
Even more, I view Tennogen as helping DE and also helping community members.
Only 2 more games fit this description perfectly. Old Runescape 2 or what we have as Oldschool Runescape now & Path of Exile.
So far I'm 2050 hours in the game (and no intention to stop!) and looking back it amuses me how I thought almost five years ago "Well it's a fun game but I doubt I'll play it much":
Oh boy, I was soooo wrong!
Auys same
I did not think i could love de anymore than I did......I was wrong.

I KNOW RIGHT? Their effort and ethics blows me away every time
Kangwa Master you know whats even cooler, the fact that they listen to us like if your dreamed of something beautiful and found that it was perfect for the game its a nice chance it will be added somehow.

The industry would be a much better place if more publishers and devs were like DE.
Alright mate calm down
“Losers” I love that
I love this game to death.
But jesus christ that was gay dude. Settle down.
no joke, find a hobby
"What have we done... Obviously that was insanely profitable, but that's not what our design philosophy is about."
I can't say I love this company.
I've been playing Warframe on and off since closed beta. Absolutely love the game. Great documentary, really humanises DE
that's how I do it. It's a real good game.
I think DE humanise DE with their community involvement. This just shines a well deserved spotlight on it
Can't disagree with that.
20:30 when you make it into the video but not the credits feelsbadman
Great documentary though. Was fun learning about how the game was made. It was nice to represent the crazy fun aspect of the game too.
I knew I saw your footage! and multiple times too.
You might not be in the credits but let me thank you for all that you have done. Representing the fun, whacky and experimental side of the game is no small task (+memes
man i love your video works and meme stuff, i hope you can continue that even the raid was no more...
ur stil alaib?
Let us hope raids will be ebtter in a diffrent way when they come back, the reason i ddint really play them is because it wasant diffrwnt enough from the rest of the game and they were a bit linear for my taste in a raid.
Those were credits for patreon supporters though, not people to offered up their footage. It was pretty cool seeing my footage in the video though, especially because I was like "Wait, that's my old color scheme... Like exactly, what are the chances... Oh wait that's me!"
R.I.P. TB for his contributions to the gaming community and his wonderful, hilarious personality.
God this makes me feel so good. Especially seeing how far things have come.
I played warframe back before any of the crazy movement was added and could not get into it at all, but I gave it another try this week and Its so much more enjoyable now
Don't forget that for slow gameplay we have Soulframe now 😉
Well... the Snipetron still works as a name, it being Corpus Weapon and all.
It feels like the kind of thing a Door-to-Door Salesman would sell you.
22:54 I love Sheldon's comments about "the lever" here. DE clearly has a different mentality than EA :P
thats because DE are not guys on suits trying to make the more money they can, DE are guys like all of us... gamers
EA would have been like "Jackpot, let's add this in every corner of the game".
What are riven mods if not a huge cash grab?
in what way are they a cash grab?
Interesting idea. Have you posted this on their forum? I'm sure it will have a better chance of being seen than here.
"This game makes me want to spend money on it just so DE can keep adding to this beast they have created."
Same man, same. Felt that way ever since the beta.
Oh man, hearing TB's voice almost brought a tear to my eye.
You forgot the most important part of the development. Making CLEM and GRAKATA!!!!, but seriously show some love for a grineer so awesome he needs only say his name. CLEM!!!!!
All praise our lord and savior Clem!
CLEM
8:41 Not gonna lie, I got a little teary eyed at this part. RIP, you glorious bastard.
kumisz that same glorious bastard is in heaven making it all the better.
Im rewatching this and then hearing TB's voice in its full glory......
It made me cry a little bit. God damn it.
Glad to know what I´m not the only one, we miss you TB ;__;
That old cantina dev stream clip gave me goosebumps lol. Has it been so long?
TOGSolid thank you for your service lmao
to this day not buying the founder pack when i had the option to was my biggest regret

After the 10 Year Anniversary stream I had to come back and watch this again. What a journey.
Big up totalBiscuit for helping them out so much!
yeah. I remember watching that video. It's what got me into the game, and I'm still going back every few months to this day.
Yep, his release of that video is the same day I downloaded warframe. Still playing!
Frank Hebert, Moebius and European Sci Fi as inspiration is so rare. Wow hats off to this team. They are indeed brave.
At the end when he was playing in the Plains, It felt like watching a baby trying to run.
I was like "Come on! You can jump over that river! You got this!"
He fell and I was like "aww.... you'll get it next try. :D"
I'm really bad at jumping the river
it gave me a big wave of nostalgia, and then i realized i've played this game for almost a decade now (got it in 2015).... god, i'm getting old.
but damn, even the plains on their own has changed so much.
Dontus powerus yeah either that or its because that DE is canadian
Just kidding what ur saying is true the learning curve is pretty big and we help each other to remove that curve
Dontus powerus absolute fax. Beautiful message man..
The absolute true
I swear Canadian altruism and morality is the way forward. I have nothing but respect and faith for DE.
Just out of curiosity, does Steve still do his Sunday Stream ?
For you who don't know, Steve's Sunday Stream is his stream where he created a new account, so he can take notes of the progress newer player has to do. Of course all this while still paying attention to criticism and suggestion in the chat.
Space mom as always being amazing
"obviously that was insanely profitable, but it was not our design intent"
that, right there, is why this game is good
very few companies care too much about vision anymore, only money
"The Studio no longer takes Work For Hire contracts" Boy, thats a tear I had to shead, so happy for my boys and girls at DE. Im so proud of them.
Rest in Peace, TotalBiscuit.
Everyone else: "This game will fail, you can;t do this"
DE:"Hold my beer!"
DE: Hold my bagged milk ftfy
Lol you haven't watched many DevStreams have you? Steve and a few of the guys will be drinking beers.
I watch 60% of all the DevStreams. but I don't think you are talking to me. xD
Watched that interview 2 weeks ago and I'm still chuckling.
Been playing since the ps4's first day release date and didn't know half of this backstory. Thank you for this
"Greed as Religion"
Guys I think I know what EA believes in.
EA is proto-corpus confirmed?
@@joshuajanssen no, EA is the leader of the Corpus
money wel spend?
Long live to Excalibur prime
Yes one of the best spend money in my life. After the founders program ended. DE sended to every master and grand master founder a T-Shirt (the first T-Shirts they made) with Founder and Warframe written on them (and the original Lotus symbol on the back), absolutely free as a gift from them.
A game like this is once in a decade
8:40 WTF is Warframe and Ghosts of the Void in the background is heartbreaking.
the damn violin is cutting an onion
Warframe has a lot of heart, you can tell, and how personal it is is so nice. It feels like a personal adventure across time and space!
The fact that it's a Frankenstein's monster of a game makes it interesting.
There is always something to do, as long as you look for it.
You've been playing for over an hour. Please remember to take a break.
23:11 "Oh my dear god, we've created a slot machine!"
Meanwhile at EA/2K/etc: I sure do love creating slot machines!
Thanks.
The evolution of this game is something unique in gaming. No other game has been shapped this much by it's own players. Really respect these guys
8:40 Man, Warframe is what it is today thanks to TB. He really did help bring the game to light. RIP John Bain, you will be missed.
15:30 that just hit the high note for me. That is a beautiful wisdom to follow.
Proud Warframe Founder from beta days. Warframe is capitalism and video games done right and well. Keep up the wonderful work!
Reb Ford is now the creative director on Warframe.
I ❤ Digital Extremes and the entire Warframe Team!
ahh yes coptering the only reason my tipedo is stuck in my top5 used melee weapons
20:32 Speaking of boredom, Zanagoth's fishing spear raid! 😂
ayylmao
Zanagoth I’m not gonna lie I just sat there staring at the screen as I watched you stare down Vay Hek with a goddamn spear before one shotting the meme himself.
Just holy shit.
yo, it's the Zanagoth himself. love yourraid videos, sir.
Mining laser raid was legendary.
RIP John Bain (Totalbiscuit)
Holy crap, this documentary was really well made. It definitely gives me a much better appreciation for the game as it is today. I just started playing a little over a week ago (tried it on the switch a while back just for giggles), and I'm definitely beyond hooked. I'm glad DE continues to thrive today. And they have absolutely earned it!
what I like about warframe is how the game becomes better the more you play it
You begin to see game mechanics, you begin to see lore
the second dream comes up a lot because it changes your perspective on the game. Up to that point you see warframe one way and out of the blue you begin to see so much more
