Hi Planner Pals! 😄 Thanks for checking out this episode. Make sure to jump into the description box to see the creators we shouted out in this video. Let us know who your favourite male creators in the planning space are! 💪
As a female with 30+ years working in IT and 15+ in IT Project Management, when I came to YT for help with getting my retired life planned/controlled I found it mostly fluffy, frilly, floral, sticker ridden pages so decorated that I couldn't easily see the basic info (events, tasks, trackers etc.). It really put me off! Then I found Ryder and Mark and, Yay the info is not getting buried! Then found Jess and she manages that fine line of lovely decoration while still keeping the data front and centre. Love you pair and so happy when I found this podcast!!
Love having you here with us 😄 finding the right people to give us the inspo we’re looking for can be tricky. Glad that Ryder and Mark’s content helped you out 💪 - Jess
Jess and Mark - thank you so much for the call out! Was a pleasant surprise and honor to be mentioned! Yes, Mark, you have inspired me to post more (as a guy) thank you to both of you for your continued inspiration on social media, monthly challenges and now podcast!! ❤🎉
Planner guy here! 💜 I’ve been following you both for years! You both have had an immense impact of my journey as a content creator! I came into the planner community (social media) back in 2014. When I found mark, I was so inspired I started my brand and social media and now here I am today! ❤ thank you both for not only fostering a space, but making sure we are all seen and I really appreciate you all! You are right, mark. Realizing that I needed to find my own personal style was definitely an obstacle that was amazing for me when I started and finding making stuff that works for me!You two really spoke on a lot. I very much so didn’t like I fit it until a few years ago, but now I’ve made friendships that I feel will last a lifetime!
Glad to have you as part of the community and awesome to hear that you’ve been feeling more like you fit in with it 😄 heck yeah for planner community friendships too 💪 probably goes without saying, but we’re all about having planner pals 😛
Oh man... you guys mentioned all these amazing bujo creators and their insta accounts, and then little ol me! I'm beyond flattered! Im def more on TH-cam but now you're making me think I need to stop neglecting IG.😂 Thanks so kuch for the shout out, and congrats on the new notebook!
Jess, if you need a notebook for your shower thoughts, there's Rite in the Rain. They're a notebook company that makes waterproof notebooks. I used them for doing ecology field work in college, and they're fantastic!
A lot of the male creators that I follow tend to be more in the areas of commonplace journaling and traveler's notebooks as well as some fountain pen enthusiasts. The Pen Addict is one who comes to mind who curates an amazing community with great conversation.
@@PlannerPalsPodcast Not specifically but I do think there's a lot of overlap between things like fountain pen enthusiasts and various journaling spaces. I've taken a lot from commonplace journaling and applied it to my BuJo as well.
I'm a fan of Myke Hurley (one of the podcasters in the Pen Addict) because of Cortex shared woth CGP Grey. Together, they have a brand called Cortex and they have the yearly theme journal and in some ways they could be considered a stationary company now. It isn't a bullet journal but I love the productivity conversations that they have
It is great to promote guys in the BuJo community, as a french Bujo-er myself, I really enjoy the content of @Leslecturesduloup Who does regular Bullet journaling videos and videos on books he has read, I really enjoy his style!
You’re one of the first men in “the planner community” that I subscribed to. I don’t resonate with a lot of the feminine planner designs as well which is what brought me to bullet journaling. I wanted something functional but still aesthetic. I really like the notebook you created. The productivity niche on TH-cam also crosses over from time to time which is where I feel like I see the most men who plan.
I'm female but my own bullet journals have always been more minimal so I definitely had a period of watching content more from male creators as often it was was more based around functionality rather than being heavily decorated. I'm generalising of course. I still stick with being more minimal for myself but now enjoy a wider range of journalling and planner content even if I don't want to emulate the style. You both already mentioned some really great male creators but another one I'd love to give a shout out to is @ruonpaper - he has a really nice aesthetic (and definitely a great example of men's journals/planners not needing to be 'plain') and I really enjoy his content.
I started in the planner community in 2013/2014, and there were very few men present. With bullet journals becoming more popular and more common, there have been more present.
Thank you for this video ❤ I am a female and have a really minimalistic approach of journaling but I also add decoration. I don't share online as much because of privacy. But I have some pictures up on instagram.
I really love this episode! I have a male family member who has been asking me to set up a planner for him, and I have been thinking a bullet journal would be best for him. However, I struggle with the thought of not making his bullet journal look too feminine. Thanks for sharing all of the accounts for men who are in the planner/bullet journaling community.
Have you checked out Plant Based Bride? She is a true artist in her journals, but she sets up her husband's bujo each month. Very creative themes, but also simple layouts that are truly functional for him. You might get some inspo from her. Just don't think you need to recreate her artistry. 😊
Great episode! So happy to have more men to follow too! I’m so happy to see Brian Hazard mentioned! Love his TH-cam channel he’s so funny and all his BuJo methods are awesome!
Just found and binge watched your episodes. Love the channel! I have been waiting for a professional notebook. I am a female that wanted to use a notebook/planner from Archer and Olive for my work. I work for the US federal government. Thanks for creating a notebook with marks and numbered pages. Never have I went to buy a notebook and bought washi tape and stickers to match, but didn't need. Thanks for all you both do!
I must confess I am not a bullet journaler, but more a diary/memory keeper with a variety of tools, and have been a devoted fountain pen user for 20+ years. I came across your podcast and have watched them all, thoroughly enjoying the discussion and I've learned some things along the way. Thank you for creating!!
Great conversation, thank you both! 😊 Got me curious what my viewer ratio looks like; for the past 28 days it's 20% male, 80% female. Also, congratulations on the collaboration release, Mark! The journal looks fantastic 🤩
I was really excited to see all of the longed for additions to the AO journal. 🎉 🎉 page numbers.🎉 🎉And so glad it was buckram. Lots of notebook keepers in my family and those that are more minimalist have careers that leave fewer blocks of time for decorations. The more creative journalers tend to be artist/music/teacher/stay home parents / students etc with more flexibility in their schedules.
I too wish there was a market for less feminine stickers and such. I love me some florals but I also love sketchy less cutesy designs, deep earthy colors, machines, pin stripe suites, whiskey and swords. (Obviously those things can be femme or masc) I just want more variety and less pink. Thank you for the follow recommendations, I can’t wait to check some of them out. Congrats Mark. Can’t wait for my Notebook.
Female here - I don't share my journal/planner because it isn't true bujo - I hack a preprinted planner to meet my needs as I am not sure if I would have energy, time, creativity to keep a proper bujo. However, I will be creating traditional bujo fort health journal - separate from planner (inspired by Jess).
Permanent marker on a plastic sleeve (with paper in it). Tape the sleeve shut so the paper doesn't get wet, then tape to the shower glass. Write with a permanent marker and it won't wash away, then you can take it with you when you leave and won't forget!
Mark since I found your page and this podcast I’ve truly been inspired. I don’t bullet journal but I use a planner and I’m super particular about my planner. My planer is really plain so I don’t post anything but I do enjoy using my planner. Congrats on your collaboration.
Jess- thank you for transparency. I would feel guilty about not using content I insert or missing a day of journaling. Mark-you are inspiring indeed. Everything you said was spot on about why guys may not post. I BuJo for a lot of years, not as creative. But it helps my brain remember and feel at ease. Is there somewhere we can share a layout that was inspired? Would be willing for one here or there.
Always a good day when PPP comes out! I love discovering new-to-me content on Insta and YT so thank you for this episode. More diversity in any space is always a good idea.
Jess- I have shower ideas too. Whiteboard marker next to the shampoo, jot it down on a high up tile that’s dry. (Don’t get it on the grout). Mark- it was your page that made me realise I can be messy and not make a super amazing creation for a bullet journal early on. I also was relieved to hear other people love stationery. Matt Ragland too and a another couple of guy creators for ideas on minimalist spreads. They were a big help to get started
I have 10% of my followers on IG are showing as male. I like following everyone, more so the people that are more functional rather than decorative. But both are good... I definitely have an aesthetic I prefer in the deco planners. Plus I love a well used planner/journal. 😊 I followed Matt for a long time. I started this journey because of Kara (Boho Berry) in 2014ish give or take. But I've been a planner for many decades. I love this podcast/channel. 😊
So excited to see Mark’s BJ with A&O. And love this topic on spotlighting men in the community. I think you’re spot on with the visually pin-interest-y spreads get lots of traction and height lighting and having more voices on simple outlays is also needed in the community. Looking forward for next week episode
small heads up, you might want to edit your comment a little. BJ does NOT stand for Bullet Journal. if you want to shorten it, use BuJo. you might want to Google BJ before using it again.😅
Okay, I did certainly have a chuckle at the idea of “Mark’s BJ” 😝 but I’m glad you’re pumped for his Archer & Olive collab! 🥳 glad you’re looking forward to the next episode too 😄 - Jess
I used to be part of the minimalist bullet journal facebook group - there were a lot more men in there (Its not as active anymore). The reason; I used to follow Brian Hazard on TH-cam. He created a system called the frankenlog and had some pretty interesting ideas for a minimalist bullet journal, mixing in the GTD system. Obviously havent seen the whole episode while I type this but wanted to share lol
I'm an older guy who keeps a variety of journals, and the main reason I don't create video content is because I don't have suitable space or equipment to do so. Maybe when I'm retired (not too many years away) it's something I'll look into. But not whilst I have a full time job.
So excited to see another video pop up! I think Happy Planner folks refer to themselves as Planner Babes? I think? Lots of good recs here, thank you for sharing!
I might be talking shmack here, but “Planner Babes” feels like a fairly gendered term 😝 I suppose mayhaps the Happy Planner is more targeted towards a female audience? 🤔 Glad you liked the recs though! - Jess
It isn’t bullet journaling, but these two guys have a stationary business together and productivity. I like Myke Hurley and CPG Grey. They have a podcast called Cortex, which was all focused on productivity, and CGP Grey came out with the Yearly Themes, and they have the theme system journal. Their business they have together is called The Cortex Brand. Myke Hurley is also a host on the podcast The Pen Addict. I didn't think of them as being connected to the journaling space per se, but it does have more overlap than I realized.
Honestly: I knew for such a long time you two have a podcast and always thought "uff 50ish minutes is such a long time to watch a TH-cam video"... And what can I say?! It was great! I find this is a really interesting topic. It's interesting to me, that perhaps more female people have such a passion for bullet journaling so they feel the inspiration to share it, while it might be more of a practical and personal matter for men...? I also imagine that, partly because you see all the creative images online, there's the stereotypical idea, that this is a female thing, because drawing and so on, while this is so stupid! My corner rounder is also from creative memories, got it from my mom 😅 I'll definitely listen to more of your episodes from now on 😊
Best corner rounder ever 👏 (At least of the ones I've tried, haha 😂) Good point about potentially women just feeling more compelled to share over men 🤔 Certainly a possible reason! Glad to have you here with us 😄
What a completely fabulous video - thank you. I love seeing community members supporting each other, not one negative moment in the video, just total respect and support, this is rare and wonderful. Thank you!
I agree on the "professional" versus it being about gendered appearance. If I'm in an office where it's very reserved, I'd be out of place (and cheap looking even if it cost $60 for a single notebook) with a lace/floral/neon/skulls & bones/torn looking cover notebook. In a more casual, but still professional, office I can rock something like Mark's, or the A&O's last 2 professional releases, and still be comfortable where as the over the top (as 1st mentioned) would still be out of place, because glaringly in your face stationary isn't "professional" regardless of your gender, and tends to leave clientele more focused on that then the topic being discussed in the meeting. If I'm in a creative environment, then it's totally open to the user to rock whatever notebook they want!
You mention how casual a place is but I believe it's more than just that. It's about the industry. My workplace isn't as casual but it's in the higher education field so while professionalism matters, there's still a lot of room and leeway to be yourself in your planner and how you dress. Professionalism means very different things in different fields even if there's a lot of overlap between them. What's cool and okay in education likely isn't in politics or international business where you have to consider the culture of the person you're interacting with as well.
@@AxisOAnarchy No snark, even if it may seem, but does working in higher education involve a dedicated office environment and clientele meetings? Not teacher/student? I've only ever had office jobs that involved actual office buildings, which is why I'm asking. :)
I Journaled for many years before starting a channel to show the basic, mail oriented love for journaling and stationery. I understand why men don’t share as so many are basic and practical so worry about showing them off.
I didn’t want to be this person and I had hoped someone else would mention it in a graceful way but here we are. And I know this video is a reflection of society and that in the future we will look at videos like this and cringe but it reflects society now. Women. Girls. Females is an adjective not a noun. Language is important here. Research the women’s vs female conversation. I couldn’t watch the whole thing but you mentioned dudes, men, guys. But for women it was….. females.
For the sake simplicity in this conversation, with the topic being around men in the planner community, we did use “females” as a stand-in for the members that make up the majority of the planner community. I don’t necessarily think that’s an unfair assessment; females do make up the majority of our community. That’s not to say there aren’t people in our community who identify as women/girls/ladies/femme who aren’t “biological females”. Similarly there are also members of our community who are non-binary, bigendered, agendered, etc. It wasn’t our intention to make people feel not included in our conversation, it’s just that as the topic was specifically about males/men/guys/dudes in our community, that’s probably why a more extensive range of terms were used for them versus other members. I appreciate you advocating for other terms that can be used for those who identify as women in our community though, and it’s never our intention to make them feel left out. Certainly something we can keep in mind in future! I would also like to point out though, female/females technically is also a noun. It doesn’t detract from the sentiment of your point though, I just wanted to clarify that. Thanks for leaving us a comment about your thoughts though, and hopefully even if this episode wasn’t for you, you can still get value from the podcast overall 😊 - Jess
30% of the subscribers on my channel are male! I’m not sure why, but it may be because I review a lot of journals? Oh and Mark I love the new Marked journals!
Thank you for your video 💐. Congratulations on the collaboration with Archer and Olive. As I said, it is a pity that there is no A&O shop in Europe 😞. Aside from Mark, the only other person I know is Ryder Carroll. I'll take a look at the list in the video description.
I'm not a "page number" person, but I also just use my dot grid notebooks for life journaling/planning & don't need to know where I put things beyond my monthly tabs. It definitely has a market, though! 🥰
Obviously I adore Mark! But also my bujo bestie Jesse at lines.and.lettering who I'm so glad got a shout out! As I was watching this, I took a little mental inventory of the gender breakdown of who I'm following, and you know what is fascinating? For journaling, I'd say it's like 80% female, but for the fountain pen space I'd say it's like 80% male 🤯 I wonder why that is?

As a female with 30+ years working in IT and 15+ in IT Project Management, when I came to YT for help with getting my retired life planned/controlled I found it mostly fluffy, frilly, floral, sticker ridden pages so decorated that I couldn't easily see the basic info (events, tasks, trackers etc.).
My corner rounder is also from creative memories, got it from my mom 😅
I'll definitely listen to more of your episodes from now on 😊
Best corner rounder ever 👏 (At least of the ones I've tried, haha 😂)
Good point about potentially women just feeling more compelled to share over men 🤔 Certainly a possible reason!
Glad to have you here with us 😄
I follow Stationery At 4 really interesting videos
Yes he defo needs to be on the list!
Thanks for the rec! We'll have to check them out 👌
What a completely fabulous video - thank you. I love seeing community members supporting each other, not one negative moment in the video, just total respect and support, this is rare and wonderful. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! 😄
re: always getting ideas in the shower, they do make notepads for the shower that have waterproof paper (somehow)
Thanks for the shoutout! You guys are funny!
Thanks for the inspiration! 😄
Mark ….. you mention two black inc creators victoria and 1 other. Can you link to them i cant find them anywhere???
Those were @myinkproject and @supermassiveblackink 😊
Im a Non Binary planner pal 🏳️⚧️🟨⬜🟪⬛ happy to be here
Glad to have you here! 😄
30% of the subscribers on my channel are male! I’m not sure why, but it may be because I review a lot of journals?
Oh and Mark I love the new Marked journals!
Cool to have the percentage that high! 💪 Content types will certainly play a role in that, yeah 😊
Thank you for your video 💐.
Congratulations on the collaboration with Archer and Olive. As I said, it is a pity that there is no A&O shop in Europe 😞.
Aside from Mark, the only other person I know is Ryder Carroll.
I'll take a look at the list in the video description.

Thanks for watching, Melly! 😄
I'm not a "page number" person, but I also just use my dot grid notebooks for life journaling/planning & don't need to know where I put things beyond my monthly tabs. It definitely has a market, though! 🥰
For sure 💪 it’s nice that the people who love Archer & Olive and love page numbers will have an option now 😄
Obviously I adore Mark!
