This made me want to cry. My dad would take me all the time back in the 90s. He passed away in 2018. Anyway, there was nothing like the old stadium. Walking through the gates at dusk to be welcomed by Eddie Layton’s organ music, to Bob Sheppard, to knowing the Yankees were probably going to win. Also with chasing HR balls in the upper deck, what viewers might not realize is how steep the angle was and how dangerous that actually was. Once I saw two grown men both fighting over the ball, and then they both fell and started rolling down a few rows like an avalanche.
My uncle once in the 80s was at a game in the upper deck with some friends. Some fat guy broke a seat and when he left my uncle wanted it. So he went to pull it out and as he did he went tumbling down like 5 rows of the upper deck. After that he was determined to get that seat and he did! He put under the shirt of his friend on his back and he wrapped his arm around him to act like a gay couple and hold the seat in his friends shirt. And they walked out of the stadium with the seat!

I've been to the new stadium twice and I have to say that as sad as it was to see the old place torn down, the pain and shock of the move was eased partly by just how much the new one looks like the old one, at least from the seats. The amenities and the space are really nice but they don't make up for the fact that when you look at right field in the new stadium, you're no longer looking at the spot where Babe Ruth stood; when you look at center field, you're no longer seeing the spot where Mantle and DiMaggio played.

HOLY SHIT!!! I WAS AT THIS GAME!!! I was 9 years old 😂 This is amazing. I spent so much time in that old stadium & really miss it. Those were great days. Thank you so much for capturing & sharing this.
Wow I’m years late to your video. This brings me back so much memories. That stadium had so much. Opponents hated it soooo much. It was in the middle of the hood. People were on top of one another both inside the stadium as outside. I live right behind it in Gerard ave. Great times. Not only for that year in baseball. But my life as well. It was an amazing 96 for me. My school did a class trip to take a tour of that stadium. I got free tickets from the NY Daily News to go watch a game with one of my parents. So many memories. Thank you for sharing this video with us. And giving a history lesson as well to those that don’t know and never experienced a game in the old Yankee Stadium.
Great video! So many memories of the old Stadium including attending many of the greatest playoff games in the 90s (incl. Game 6 in 96') and 00's (incl. WS Game 4 in 01' and ALCS Game 7 in '03). Amazing energy! I will go against many of the commenters below and agree with you Zack that I understand why management opted for a new stadium. People tend to forget how dingy, crowded...the old stadium was. I remember attending a game as a 14 year old and completely losing my Dad in the crowd, it was an unsettling feeling - especially with no cell phones! Also, the food/dinner options were so so limited, basically hot dogs (often with no condiments) or bust. The newer one is laid out far better (i.e. sight lines to the game from the concourse without even having to walk to your seat) with so many nice food options and I've come to really enjoy attending games in it. I get the nostalgia of course and do wish they didn't have to tear the old one down but that's not how things work. Anyway thanks for bringing me back to simpler times!
Awesome video. Went to my first game at the Stadium not long after this video's genesis. I can definitely attest to the narrow concourses which moving around during and after games wasn't simple. Been there for the playoffs too. The lines were long for concessions but man, oh man do I miss the old yard. Best place I ever saw a game.
Big time steep and slightly terrifying. I was at a game in the upper deck in left field when David Justice hit a homerun to beat the Red Sox. People were going wild and the whole freaking upper deck was rocking back and forth.
The stadium design was made to keep the seats closer to the field, unlike the current stadium. If you wanted the fans in the upper deck to still have a reasonably full view of the field, you needed to make the upper decks steeper. Even as it was, there were seats that didn't have full visibility of the field.
I spend my entire childhood there. I was born in 73, so going to games when I was young was pretty easy, because they didn't win many games. We had a crappy team in the '80s, but that was okay by us, because it was easier and cheaper to get in the game everyday. Video is cool, brought back a lot of memories. You should have had less commentary though. Not that you suck or anything, but I think people would rather get lost in the moment it was being taped, rather than your updated take on it. Just seems more authentic when you're in the moment.
I went once in 2005 or 2006. Randy Johnson was pitching for NY. In the middle of the game I was walking around and came out of the tunnel behind home plate and a foul ball came whizzing by me. Yankee Stadium was a cool place.
I agree. Too many people refer to the renovated stadium of the 70s as “old Yankee Stadium.“ The renovated stadium of the 70s was strikingly similar to the current stadium. The original stadium was the one with character.
My college roommate and I drove from the Chicago suburbs in 08 to see the last year of the Stadium for a May series against Cleveland. We saw Mussina and Pettitte for the Yanks and Cliff Lee for the Indians. We sat in the outfield for the first two and our first reaction was how tight and dark it was under the bleachers even for an old stadium. Fenway has a lot of room under the outfield and Wrigley was bigger (even pre renovation) too. Cheers from a fellow baseball dork, almost the best time of year again. Have a great season.
Ah, the good old days of VHS tape recording. Where you had a TRACKING control, and if you didn't USE IT, you got annoying white lines at either the top or bottom of the video. >_
Wish i was older and actually remembered the old stadium. Went to a few games but i was only a baby. 4 years old when it closed. Also wish i could have enjoyed a pre 9/11 crowd like this. Must have been good times. Despite everything about the old stadium though, i do love the new stadium. Lets go Yankees
I was 8 when I went to my first baseball game ever at old Yankees stadium in 2008. At first I thought it was just a regular baseball stadium that wasn’t that special. But now looking back I wish I cherished the moment more because of how special this place was.
What an awesome video, I went to old Yankee stadium a lot as a kid. Only been to the new one once bc I live out of state now. But I am not boycotting the stadium like others lol...I am as big a yankee fan as any and realize as time goes on, you can only do so much to an old stadium. At some point you need to build a new one. The new stadium has some amazing amenities in it and if the Yanks didnt build a new one, fans would be complaining about that. People that complain about the new stadium still wish you could go see a show in a booth on 42nd street. Times change..Yankees realized it was time and I could love the old stadium while appreciate the new one for what it is.
Unless the building was literally crumbling due to some disaster, then it would've still been fine like with Fenway and and could've had amenities added. New one was really built to milk more money from casual rich fans. But whatever; I'd rather see a few more world series more than anything.
Awesome video. I was exactly 10 months old to the day when this was filmed. I went to the old stadium only a few times in my life, but this brought back so many memories.
I'm not a Yankee Fan but the announcer gave me chills to the core, it was like Baseball Gods announcing a batter especially in that historic legendary stadium, maybe that one announcer would've made me a Yankee fan if he was still here today. RIP
The atmosphere at the old Yankee Stadium--ESPECIALLY for a big postseason game--was unlike ANYPLACE on Earth! The greatest sporting event I ever attended was Game 2 of the 1995 Division Series against Seattle. When Mattingly went deep that place SHOOK--literally the Stadium was SHAKING!! Just an incredible electricity and passion that can never be duplicated anywhere else!!
Wow this is incredible! So many great memories at this park. There was nothing like walking out of the gray, dingy tunnels to see the field in front of you. It was like entering Oz. I went to so many games back then and that never got old. And all the ghosts.....
I love the new stadium.. I’ll be the first to argue with somebody that bashes it.. the look, the feel, the setup is great in my opinion.. I’ve seen many games at the old place and boy do I miss it.. but I understand why the change was made. The biggest thing I miss was walking through the tunnel and the field opening up right before your eyes..especially with a packed house in October. The upper deck... you lean to far and it’s aaaallll over! I miss it, but I love the new place.. great memories here
Did you hear the stadium tonight?? place was ROCKING! and its May! Its never going to be like the old place but boy was it loud.. If the old place was a 10/10 in noise.. this is a solid 8/10...Atmosphere seems back on track and its intimidating again
A soulless shopping mall with a baseball field in the middle. We’re all entitled to our opinions but for me , ALL the charm is gone. Upper deck, gone, Right field porch, gone. The pure joy of walking out of those portals, seeing the magic, gone. And you’d think they could have put up an accurate replica of the facade instead of a half assed replica.....Those who signed off on moving to the new park should be jailed. Maybe an overstatement, but that’s my take. All due respect to those that enjoy the new park but, you’re missing the point. Going to the original Stadium was an event in itself. And it’s gone .
Thanks for sharing... makes me so nostalgic. You're 100% right about how much better the concourses are in the new stadium. I wish you had footage of the old tunnel going into the stadium from the parking lot with the guy playing the piccolo!
I remember that guy, used to play Take Me Out to the Ballgame and stuff. Here's a picture of me in that same walkway (with my anti-Clemens jersey)--unfortunately my shot doesn't include the guy, but he's probably right in front of me, obscured. 1.bp.blogspot.com/_tbBYNu0qnow/SX0-JHbZh2I/AAAAAAAAIvk/k14rs2r7DVw/s1600-h/jerewalkway.jpg
And now I see that in the blog post I had that picture in, I mentioned the guy! Though I called him the "flute player." letsgosox.blogspot.com/2009/01/brut-signjeres-yankee-stadium-tribute.html
There were other ways to improve the stadium and still keep the old stadium - the move had to do with increasing profits - not consideration of the fans.
@@derpyoctopus4217 Exactly. Fenway and Wrigley still stand today but the Yankees organization couldn't figure it out lol. BULLSHIT - They're fucking greedy

Great video Zack! Glad I got to see your tour of the old Yankee Stadium! Love watching your videos, it's like being there myself because you make them so personal and with feeling. Greetings from Denmark! :-)
That was such a sweet walk through the yankee stadium I really remember. Thanks for that. Same year I saw Golden throw his no hitter from behind home. Wish I had video of that!
My only visit to the stadium was in August,1964. The original Yankee Stadium. I was 12 years old. The Yankees played the Red Sox and won 9 to 3. Mick hit one out to right center. Roger didn't play that day. Hector Lopez played in right that day and hit a home run in the right field seats. We were seated in foul territory near the right-field foul pole. In those days Yankee games on TV were in black and white and we only could watch a game on Saturday. Most of the time we listened on a transistor radio. So walking into the stadium in full color blew me away. That green copper facade and I had never seen grass so green before. The stadium was gigantic. The bathrooms and ramps to the seats were disgusting and dirty. We couldn't afford hot dogs or other refreshments so we just watched the game. The next day we went to the World's Fair. We stayed at The Dixie Hotel in Times Square and went to dinner nearby. It was the first time I had ever been out to a restaurant for dinner. I had spaghetti. We didn't see any other sites because we couldn't afford them. For our family, a picnic in the local park was our summer vacation so that trip to New York was really something special. I never got to visit the rebuild of the old stadium and now with the cost of tickets, I'm back where we were when I was a kid. I could never afford to go to the new stadium. Thanks for posting this tour. Those upper deck seats looked scary but the view of the game is really terrific. I hope to get to visit Heritage Field before I pass away and just walk out to where we sat that day and just take in the field and remember.
I remember my first MLB baseball and it was the Yankees game against the Rangers at Globe Life Park in Arlington back on May 5, 2006. I'm a Rangers fan by the way. Now that I'm 18 I feel old
awesome! I wanted to see exactly what you showed me, including the outside of the stadium, the bat, corridors , escalator and most importantly, the walk from the corridor out through the tunnel to Section 1. that's where my seats were very nostalgic. thanks for posting...
This brought back memories from the times I used to attend games at least 20 times per year in the late 70s....before the obnoxious prices started. Section 1 upper deck. Every now and the I would indulge myself and sit on the field level for 7 dollars!!!! Imagine that!!!!
Thank you for this!!Games where 1:35,7:35 i must have gone to 20 regular games 30 play off games 2 w.s. games and 2 w.s. games sitting on the bar at stans across the street. Great times
Thats what made it special the dark concourse!! Thats the character that these new stadiums lack. When you walk from the dark concourse and see the bright green grass and field its magical!!!
This video was filmed 4 days before I was born. Wow! During the 2008 season, I got to be one of the kids who was in the outfield for the Home Run Derby on that field. Miss the old stadium.

I watched the Daryl three home run game in Cancun in the All Star Cafe. Great memories. Thanks
Seeing this video brings out so many emotions.. happiness, sadness, so many memories with my old man. We had season tix from 1992 to 2008 (well until 2010, didnt want the new seats at new stadium, since they totally screwed us).. sitting in section M15 row 1 seats 1 thru 4.. yes it was crowded, but it was ours. I remember Orca, and Freddy with his Tin Pot! Eddie Layton on the organ.. Hearing Bob Sheppards voice gives me the chills
I totally saw this game on the tube, man. Great up-load!
HOLY SHIT!!! I WAS AT THIS GAME!!! I was 9 years old 😂 This is amazing. I spent so much time in that old stadium & really miss it. Those were great days. Thank you so much for capturing & sharing this.
Thank you for sharing! And from the same year I fell in love with the team. The upper deck is just as steep as I remember
I'm sure people will be watching it in 50 years to see what baseball was like in the late 20th Century.
Watching this on august 6 2021, exactly 25 years after
2:32 Back then, the Yankees had pretty much only one sellout per regular season, Opening Day.
Something about the electricity and excitement of the old Yankee Stadium
Really good narration. Never boring and great insight into what it was like watching a game there
Great video!
This was awesome! thank you for sharing
Wow 8:20 narration is amazing/nostalgic. You are the most interesting man in the world.
Nice Video. My season Tickets were in Box 277 on the 1B line field level from 1994-2008. I may have been at that game LOL
The Old Yankee stadium always seemed so steep ! Anyone else feel the same?
Big time steep and slightly terrifying. I was at a game in the upper deck in left field when David Justice hit a homerun to beat the Red Sox. People were going wild and the whole freaking upper deck was rocking back and forth.
@@dtc8249 Lol definitely. Part of what made it so fucking memorable.
That feeling at 2:55 when you'd walk out and see the field. 🤩
I went once in 2005 or 2006. Randy Johnson was pitching for NY. In the middle of the game I was walking around and came out of the tunnel behind home plate and a foul ball came whizzing by me. Yankee Stadium was a cool place.
It's cool you actually thought to record this all these years ago. And we get to enjoy them now.
I wish I had recorded more.
It would have been great if someone did this with the original ballpark in 1973.
I miss this stadium so much I practically grew up there
I feel your pain.
another great one thank you for taking the time..
My pleasure. Thanks for watching it.
Awesome video. I was exactly 10 months old to the day when this was filmed. I went to the old stadium only a few times in my life, but this brought back so many memories.
I miss the smell of that old ballpark. Nothing like it
I smell it in my head sometimes
Ghosts?!
Whaaaaat? I never saw that guy playing the piccolo, but anyway, you're welcome.
Found it! This guy:
bomberbanter.wordpress.com/tag/luther-petty/
The Straw had one of the sweetest swings aside from Jr Griffey
Thanks for the memories 👍👍👍
You sir are a true baseball fan.
good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to yankee stadium
There were other ways to improve the stadium and still keep the old stadium - the move had to do with increasing profits - not consideration of the fans.
No, they couldn't have
@@stevep8445 yet they could at Fenway?
@@derpyoctopus4217 Exactly. Fenway and Wrigley still stand today but the Yankees organization couldn't figure it out lol. BULLSHIT - They're fucking greedy
wow this is exceptional, great insight on the stadium and game..lucky catch though filming Strawberry getting 3 dingers and i thought possibly even a fourth for a brief second *great stuff*
wow I was at this game in the upper deck 1st base side . Miss the days when I was 10min away on the 4 train
Great video!! Miss the old Yankee Stadium..
Still can't believe it's gone.
Great video Zack! Glad I got to see your tour of the old Yankee Stadium! Love watching your videos, it's like being there myself because you make them so personal and with feeling. Greetings from Denmark! :-)
Thanks so much. Nice to know people are enjoying these vids from so far away.
AWESOME video, so special you have these videos and the 3 homers from a legend.
Thanks! Very special indeed.
Nice job Zack....great memories for all of us who grew up going to the Stadium...
The guy "running off the field" honestly looks like a fan rushing the field, so funny. These are awesome Zack, keep em comng!
Things looked so OLD . . . just 20 years ago. How is current life going to look 20 years from now?
The fact that you caught all three homers is crazy! I wasn't even born yet lol
I miss the old Yankee stadium good memories going with my dad and bother every summer eating hot dogs and penunts
Now that I'm 18 I feel old
awesome! I wanted to see exactly what you showed me, including the outside of the stadium, the bat, corridors , escalator and most importantly, the walk from the corridor out through the tunnel to Section 1. that's where my seats were
very nostalgic. thanks for posting...
Great times
awesome footage! thanks for the trip down memory lane!
This is so good.
Was gloomy in the concourse, but once inside, there was great character from the announcers to the fans.
Thats what made it special the dark concourse!! Thats the character that these new stadiums lack. When you walk from the dark concourse and see the bright green grass and field its magical!!!
Lol I wasn’t even born until august 31st and he was still doing the damn thing. Respect to yo craziness
This video was filmed 4 days before I was born. Wow! During the 2008 season, I got to be one of the kids who was in the outfield for the Home Run Derby on that field. Miss the old stadium.
2 days before I was born. Cheers to 26 🍻
Watching this brought back so many memories
oh boy, I was born exactly 4 days after this game, 10th august 1996!
I was 1 year and 18 days old lol
omg @ 1:47 I remember as a little kid watching that guy on the jumbotron..... I use to get a laugh watching that guy..... thanks for the memories
