2048: How to achieve a 4096 tile

  • This video details strategies to get to a 2048 tile in the game 2048: gabrielecirulli... Click "Show more" to see all the hints.
The example goes through a 4096 tile and beyond. This video hits 2048 about 4 minutes in (22 minutes of wall-clock time.)
    The hints are:
Put your biggest tiles on the right wall.
Make your largest tile in the upper right corner.
Create and immobile stack on the right hand wall.
Never, ever, move left. Only move down when it will not merge tiles on the right.
This is the danger zone, when you cannot move down safely.
You have to hope tiles will form where you can send them to the right hand wall.
Keep going until the right wall is safe again.
As you roll up a large set, take time between each up arrow to send anything that formed to the right.
This minimizes your chances of having an issue later.
As you build new numbers, send most newly formed numbers to the bottom right corner.
Try to avoid getting a 2 stuck on the right above another number and next to a larger one.
When it happens, send new numbers to the top instead of the bottom to clear space in front of the 2.
Right first? Or up first? Choose right first so that you'll still have 4 tiles in the right column after going up, no matter where the new one forms.
Sometimes the best intentions still don't work out, and you have to move the top right down and hope for the best.
That time I should have tried left instead of down because it had better odds, but I got lucky.
Late in the game as you form new numbers in the bottom right, you usually get excess leftover numbers from the top in this spot. [The spot 3 columns over from the left and 2 columns up from the bottom, henceforth the (3,2) spot.]
In this situation [an 'L' shape of equal large-ish numbers in the bottom right] always merge to the right.
It's tempting to merge down, but that seldom works out well. Getting a large number on the bottom right is the bigger challenge.
Again, we have a big number in the (3,2) spot.
That's ok. This number just keeps things on the top from getting too large.
It absorbs the excess top numbers so that the third column can still go up and down when you need more 2's on the bottom.
It will merge in to the right eventually.
Always think about what you are building next and where you will build it.
Now we want [the (4,2) square] to grow to 128. We grow it as we can, and the square beneath to match it.
Repeat that procedure to build larger numbers.
    Things to watch out for:
    Take care merging up
Beware of rogue 2's on top. Merge to 4's ASAP.
    Another hint:
When you have 3 in a row the same, consider where you want the larger merged number to end up. The bigger number will be formed in the direction of the merge.
    Next advice at 3:40.
When you get near the end, space is more tight.
Try to keep the large number on the bottom right and create and immobile column of doubles if possible.
    Then wrap it up!
That took 22 minutes in real-time. Keep going if you just can't stop.
Going for 4096 is similar, but the end is more constrained.
The important thing is not to make mistakes.
Especially don't go down when tiles match on the right column.
Avoiding going left by accident is easier to do.
Fast forward: The next comments are at 6:10.
Things were looking good when... disaster strikes!
I was forced to go left, and a 2 forms in the worst possible spot.
I might be done for, but at least I have a clean board.
Getting the 2048 back in the corner is a matter of patience and luck.
I might have been able to do this better, but it worked.
[To get the 4096 in the top right again.] Now, I want the second row locked with 4 tiles, and the top with only 3.
Whew! But now I have some big time cleanup to do.
The beginning of the end... I got stuck forced to go left.
    And then I floundered.
Good luck in your own journey to 2048.

About the author: Beth Leonard has been playing 2048 for about a week. She first achieved 2048 on her 4th game. Since making this video she has achieved 8192 with a 4096 tile and a total score of 150,268. She says, "When the going gets really tight, you have to treat the 3rd column just like the 4th and intentionally lock it in place, working primarily in the first two columns with frequent multiple merges to the right."

why didn't you go down at 11:01 and and then right to get rid of the 8?

Good point. You can tell by the way it pauses I was thinking about it. I think that somewhere in that thought process I forgot there was already an 8 to the right if I'd gone down that I could have merged into.
It's as if my brain said, "ok, there will be a 16 in the third slot from the left on the bottom, so what's the best way to take this 8 which will remain in the second slot from the bottom and get that to become a 16." If that were the case, then going right would be better so that I could get a 4 on top of the 8 once I go down (or 2's that can make a 4 if one forms below as I go right) but that wasn't it -- I still needed to make that 16 using that 8.
Good catch! I did make several mistakes this game, but most were recoverable. I find if I don't make many mistakes, I can usually get quite far. I'm working on a video "4096 to 8192: advanced tips and techniques" but I haven't finished it yet. I've shot the video, but I haven't added in the explanations yet.

***** thanks a lot for the answer! I saw that you paused, so I was curious if there was any special reasoning behind it... haha. I've only made it to 4096. Really exceptional how you managed to get the highest tile back to the corner. I usually quit when I'm that high up and make a mistake. Looking forward for your next video.

Does this work with the left corner too?

    • @BethLeonard
      @BethLeonard  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes! It will work for any corner/edge. In fact, being good at doing any edge is a good thing, because sometimes there are situations you can't avoid that cause you to get a 2 stuck above where you were working, and to get your biggest tile back into a corner (any corner!) you end up using a different corner.
