The trash can liners in the grass catcher on the JD is a great idea. I bag a lot of grass when I have the time, put it in my compost pile and sell it back to my customers the next summer for use in a veg garden.

Great video - to the point and informative. I de-thatch at the beginning of the season, that was I pick up al the debris that mother nature put on the lawn too. I have an Agri fab Lawnsweeper, with a de-thatcher attached to the front of it, it throws the thatch into the hopper, and i pull the handle to dump on my mulch pile (a huge time saver on my big yard). With 2 acres to take care of I'd go broke buying bags, lol.
Keep doing what you're doing, it obviously keeps you smiling. Stay well

I bought a new house outside of Columbia, Pa. in '17. Lawn was a mess. And then the grubs killed half the lawn and I had tons of dead grass everywhere. Used the Agrofab drag rake. Bagged up 15 bags of dead grass. But I found that pavers 2-3 are the better choice. Cinderblock seemed too heavy and was pulling up good grass too.

I bought the same Brinly-Hardy dethatcher to tow behind my Husqvarna tractor, and it works really well. You don't understand how much thatch lies underneath smothering your lawn until you run the dethatcher over it. But for the next step, I use my lawnsweeper. From what I've seen here on TH-cam, the lawnsweepers seem to be more popular in Canada than in the US.

I just bought one today for that exact reason !! Bought it from a yard sale at a steal !! Still like new. We had a storm come through here a couple weeks ago and left a TON of small twigs all over the yard. I was hoping the de-thatcher would do the trick. Hearing you say it works did my heart good !! My yard is to big and I'm to old to "man up" with that stinkin' RAKE !! LOL !! Thanks !!

I can't help but think about throwing down some heavy fertilizer in the garden... and then throwing that dead grass on top for the Winter. Talk about a good veggie patch in a few years!
Thanks for sharing. I am just planting out my 1acre yard/mud hole at the new house. Just put down tall fescue and plan to cut @ 3.75" (Highest setting my mower will do). Been looking at that style of de-thatcher. I now look forward to harvesting all the thatch from the yard once every few years! Endless free topsoil/compost AND a good looking yard!!!

What I'm looking for is an easy way to clear the de-thatcher from vines, branches, leaves and pine needles, without having to get on my knees and hand pull it out after each pass.

Don't put the plastic bags in the bager. you need to let the air out, that is why the mower bags have holes, for the air to get out but to trap the grass. also if you make a compost pile and compost all that grass you will get even more green out of it.

If you have a mulching mower you have to be on it depending how fast your grass grows. Its best to only take a 1/3 off the top if you're going to mulch it back into the grass. That small amount that's clipped off and mulched will decompose back into the dirt. Anything clipped off over atleast 1/3 most likely wont decompose as much back into the dirt and will sit down at the base of the grass on top of the dirt. This is what is as described as "Thatch".

ikillbugs fescue is a seed that will keep the grass rich green color over the winter and it will be nicer next spring because of the new seed

Would mulch the dead grass instead to sending to landfill

That's what I wondered. Run it over with a mulcher blade and let it go back to fertilizer.

Not everybody’s trash goes to a landfill, for instance my area burns all trash for power and recycles the ashes.

You need to start a compost pile. No need to bag it.

    • @crpth1

My taught exactly. Seeing all that FREE raw material being wasted and plastic bagged! To be hauled somewhere else, meaning more gas (money), time and pollution... You name it. It's one mistake on top of another. The circle of ridicule of our society!
Kind of sarcastic how he mentioned going out to BUY fertilizer! Tragic LOL 😂
His garden would welcome the resulting compost every time or even as a free mulch . And you can save money, labor and time without polluting so much. Win, win... all the way.
I really don't understand how people can be so blind, about something so obvious!

Is all that dead undergrowth the result of mulching?

    • @Gigmaster
      @Gigmaster  5 ปีที่แล้ว

HM Roa It all came from dethatching. No mulch on the lawn. Just layers of dead grass.

Nah it's just from mowing your lawn high , which is what everyone should do IMO.
