  • A step sideways rather than forward, the PS5 Access Controller is great, if its design suits your needs straight out the box unmodified.

A truly intensely modular controller would be nice for probably most people disabled or otherwise, I feel there's good curve cut potential plus imagine the creative uses of just plainly absurd setups.
Like you could make something even harder to use than the "regular" controller if you just wanna go Full Chaos Mode.

This controller looks interesting to me. It seems like something more useful for my needs, and I love having everything in a more compact form factor and not needing external inputs. Hopefully, they release an input hub version later for those who want more customisation. =)

importnt point is how we use with one hand.. not two . how we use charcter and camera movement at the same time..

I don't think an 'out of the box' accessible controller is a bad idea, particular for the less severe users that don't yet have or need bespoke equipment but I do hope they allow more modularity in further editions. It's a good start but I hope it's not where it ends for Sony.

Tell you what though, for their first official accessibility-based controller, it's absolutely a good start. But I feel like their vision is unrealistic. You can't please everyone with a mission of "this is how it should be used, don't worry about all that hub stuff". They can certainly try, and maybe even get close to doing it right, but it's still not the best idea. They should've welcomed the idea of hubs and all this and still make their own controller very capable. It'd literally be a win for all parties.
I hope they learn these lessons and more if (hopefully 'when') they try make a new one later, be it for this gen or the next.

I've bought one and intend to try it out soon. I mean to buy two of these things is going to be expensive if that's what's needed but we'll see. The thing that gets me personally with games is the need to use two analogue sticks to move and aim. Honestly, I tend to avoid games that require this which I guess is unfortunate as it's usually some of the biggest releases.

It feels bizarre to me that the messaging around motion controls and pad gestures is “inherently inaccessible” and not something that is at least given an attempted solution for, even if the solution isn’t perfect or is relatively limited. The button to replicate gestures idea sounds good, but I also like the concept of clicking a button on the pad to turn that pad’s respective joystick into a virtual tilt or virtual finger on the touchpad. Wouldn’t be perfect but it would at least be better than nothing.
Regardless, I think this controller could have an interesting life. The act of piecing it together looked pretty fun in a tinkery sense. I do wonder if it could see use in the fighting game scene as an alternative to their big boxes of sticks and buttons.

    • @user-hw5td8wo3e

it sounds like Sony is doing it out of stubbornness, seeing motion controls as something that only abled people will care about.

This is extremely odd considering *Nintendo* of all companies made Skyward Sword accessible for non-motion controls. This is one of many... interesting choices about this controller. I feel like there wasn't a lot of consulting with the disabled community instead of just "experts."

this definitely feels like classic sony branding getting in the way of actually making more meaningful headway in innovation. can't have a sony device with a ton of optional non-sony accessories dangling off of it because "aesthetics" and so on.

      @user-hw5td8wo3e 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah it feels like Sony are obsessed with trying to become more like Apple, the overall ugly curved design of the PS5 reeks of it(and unfortunately the Slim barely looks any different and looks like it still has the problem of taking up an unnecessary amount of space due to only being able to be stored one way)and not allowing more ports on the controller reminds me of Apple removing headphone jacks in later iPhone models, it's this stupid obsession with wanting everything to look "neat" at the expense of certain people.

Anyways, thanks for the insightful overview of the adaptive controller. Still not sure if I can use it, I hope I can find a way to try it out some time, as I am not keen to drop all that money on two of these to find out if it will help me. Of course, I am trying to get away from my PlayStation as it is, since they have really made my gaming life more difficult for years now.

Can you clarify… It doesn’t appear that any of the buttons truly function like the L2 and R2 buttons on a regular PlayStation controller where you can apply partial depression similar to a foot pedal. Is that correct? Like for a driving game? That’s primarily what I’m looking for.

Shame it doesn't quite live up to it's potential, but it does look like a pretty decent controller for people it works for.
Hopefully in the years to come (Maybe PS6 or another console), manufacturers can look at what's been done with the accessibility controllers so far and make a big leap forward for them.

  • @476f7474

I wrote a long comment on why I believe the access controller adds more value than a hub could but apparently I used one or more words that TH-cam doesn't allow. Reagardless:
My point was that Sony offers a more accessible version of still the typical playstation experience and that a hub can't do that and also that xbox offers a hub and mostly, they can be used for the same purpose.

Seems about right for Sony's attitude toward making products for gamers. Great for a few who can buy into their ecosystem, not so great for everyone else.

    I came here via Mystic..
Anyway, I pre-ordered one of these as I'm a collector, and who knows, maybe one day I'll need one anyway. I also thought by buying one it may support the entire idea.
However, it almost looks like you definitely need two.. as providing only one stick and no idea if external sticks might work down the line is a concern..

I am onehanded and this controller does nothing for that the dual seense edge doesnt already do.
And the edge is far inferior to the Xbox Elite, which lets me double bind everything through a shift button. Groundbreaking.
I have enough dexterity to controll the right stick and if combo inputs are needed like lb + x I can add my adaptive controller and a foot paddle.
The PS5 is barely playable for me, even with 300 € of equipment.

Actually I’ve just thought of something… Is anyone here good at fixing retro electronics? Basically I’m trying to buy up every single one of these joysticks that I can because at some point I won’t be able to my PlayStation as and when the last ever joystick brakes on me. The new Accessible Controller from PlayStation is sadly absolutely useless for me in every way as I have only hand and I need a Turbo feature, so my joystick is literally the only thing that works for me. A few have broke on me and we have no idea how to fix them etc. I was wondering if anyone here can fix them for me or knows anyone who can I would gladly pay them for fixing it for me. Gaming massively helps my mental health and if I could find a fixer I would treat them like a king 😂 Thanks in advance, Kain

This controller is absolute garbage!!! I bought all the Bite Switches available in Europe that work with a 3.5mm jack, spent a total of 180€ for the two Access Controllers plus nearly 200€ for the Bite Switches, and none of them are recognized by the Access Controller! Sony support is almost nonexistent, and there's no information on the internet or Sony's official pages. Logitech's accessory buttons are still not available over a month after the Access Controller's release, and no one seems to care! Apparently, there's no community in this area. My PS5, including all this "accessible" accessories, cost me well over 1000 euros, and I haven't been able to play a single game because there's no functional external input accessory! The Bite Switch I have is from Airturn and is officially suitable and compatible with the Microsoft Adaptive Controller according to the description and packaging, but it's not recognized by the Sony Access Controller, just like all the other switches and buttons I've tested. I can rule out a defect since I use a setup with two Access Controllers, and neither of them works! Why is there no information about this problem?! I believe I'm almost the only one trying to use this controller for its intended purpose. With the Microsoft Adaptive Controller, there are numerous official how-tos and DIY guides for building accessories and input devices, along with a helpful community. Sony couldn't care less. I'm so desperate and would love to throw all this junk against the wall... Why are there no test videos about this? Can you help with your reach? Desperate regards, Florian
