Is The 777X Bigger Than The 747?

  • The Boeing 777X promises a lot for both airlines and passengers. The largest engines to enter commercial service, the highest capacity of a twinjet ever, and improved efficiency over the 777. The larger -9 takes over from the Boeing 747, offering almost the same capacity, with a longer fuselage and wider wingspan. Let’s look at the dimensions of the two aircraft and how they stack up with each other.

When it starts service at the end of 2023, the 777-9 does have one huge advantage of the A380: it can operate out of airports that were already designed to use the 747, most of which were upgraded in the late 1960's to middle 1970's. That saves a lot of money for airport operators.

747 was never expected to succeed - so it was designed for cargo.
There will always be something special about the 747, its essentially the only aircraft variant that is instantly recognizable by everyone!
The 777X will be exciting to experience too - but at this point, I'm more impressed with narrow-body variants like the C-Series (being Canadian the A220 will always be the C-Series to me 😎) - and whenever the 797 gets developed to be the new, modern 757, that too will be a game-changer.

Wonder if Airbus considered adding folding wing tips for the A380? Hoping that one day we see a return of the 747 form, imo its shape is the best looking of all. A future 747 could even be a double decker full length like the A380, but with the famous 747 bump at the front for a front 3rd level deck(!). This is all for if or when the carriers' may return to the biggest, most spacious aircraft being most in demand and viable. And with folding wing tips if possible for maximum flexibility at more airports.

can you give a comparison of 777x and a350?
though a350 is already in service,I read on the composite fuselage as superior to 777X's metal..
hope you can do a fair comparison..
news on the premature paintwork corrosion on the a350,will that contribute to higher long term maintenance compared to the 777X?

It's increasingly rare yes. F on most carriers have been replaced but business class and then they have premium economy. Only a few international carriers have true international F left and the ones that do are even reducing the size of the cabin. International F doesn't tend to make money for the carriers, the money is in business class.

I've been on a couple of older 747s but never on the upper deck. In my humble opinion the 77 will replace the 47 very well for passengers! Everyone will get use to it but I think that a lot of freighter's will miss the opening front that makes the 747 a much faster to load cargo aircraft.

I actually prefer the 787, Dreamliner. Wide body aircraft but not nearly as many passengers.
The problem with more passengers is once on the ground there are more passengers at Customs & Immigration and baggage claim. Even at airports with Global Entry baggage claim is a nightmare.
Try taking an Emirates A380 to a small island like Seychelles or Mauritius, or an Air France A380 to an developing country in West Africa.
