The improv at the end was RIDICULOUS, Tyler! Soooo delucious! Love the fact that you mention south of France in 1935!!! Hihihi. I was totally there with you.
Tips: - listen to Minor Swing by Django - think in terms of arpeggios instead of scales and follow the chord chart - land on the 6th more often than not (works both for minor and major arpeggios) - try to develop said arpeggios diagonally rather than vertically - listen to Minor Swing
not one mention that the chord progression he is playing over is minor swing by Django Reinhardt? everyone should go and listen to that if you want to hear what gypsy lead playing sounds like!
@@gunnar7902 indeed but I rather have our traditions kept to our people last thing I need is white teenage girls calling me racist because I'm playing duj duj

Hey Tyler video request! 10 tips for intermediate guitarist practice-wise? In terms of what kinds of things an intermediate guitarist should work on or be working on
Easily the most important and hardest part of gypsy jazz is the hard swing rhythm playing, Tyler does a great job on touching on the lead ideas but for the authentic rhythm style listen to Django Reinhardt playing “Coquette” and “Django’s Castle”. Joscho Stephan is also one of the best gypsy jazz players today.
I'm glad to see you playing minor swing and teach some of the Gipsy vibes. Maybe a special episode with you learning the "les yeux noirs" (Rosenberg trio at sea jazz festival) song? It's a pretty damn good thing but very difficult :) try it!
Whack that chord progression in a looper and even just noodling around scale shapes sounds good just because of how stereotypical it sounds, loads of fun!
Indeed this is “gypsy music” take it from a a real gypsy my family game to the us in the late 30s/ early 40s in ww2 and I can tell you this is gypsy music, am E and Dm are pretty much the only chords we use but my friends if you want a real taste in are cultures music go on TH-cam and search “ Gypsy singing sam” he’s are version of the Americans Elvis and then go listen to the “gypsy bosso” If you listen to that you’ll have a better understanding for the rhythm and lead guitar in real authentic gypsy music
your theory lessons are unmatched all over the internet. Love the way you teach em, and they're pure gold for theory nerds like me! Please do more, if possible, like you used to do in the early days. rock on \m/
Aaawwwww..shit..looking for that sound for an into for a harder sound. Thanks.....but you know ....we are not all fortunate enough to have the equipment or talent you have......none the less...thanks for the motivation. You rock...glad i subscribed.
I’m liking the lesson vids more and more, but the humor’s great too. Come for the licks, stay for the laughs? Or is it the other way around in reverse? Noticed the RC-1 looper. Aren’t they great? I have the RC-3 but sometimes wish I had the simplicity of the RC-1 (and that lighted loop display is sorely missed on mine - sometimes simpler *is* better). I do dig the drum samples in mine though. Ugh I’m rambling. See what ya make me do? Lol, in a good way though. Rock on good sir.
And though I already commented, your phrasing and timing were so awesome in this I had to comment again just for that. Loved that counterpoint stuff you were doing for a little bit in the outro. And the sneaky Django sounding line near the end. Django Reinhardt Unchained anyone? 😂
i have the same loop pedal.. the loop is always too loud for anything i play over it. only way i can fix that is by lowering it so much u can barely hear hte loop... 125 watt amp... any advice anyone?
ah, you didn't credit Django and his Minor Swing chord progression, but you honnored him with your (his) last lick ;) It's interresting, I will train the gipsy scale :)
Listen to Django Reinhardt, Jimmy Rosenberg, stochelo Rosenberg, joscho Stephane and the rest of the gypsy greats. Tyler is an awesome guitarist, but gypsy jazz sounds nothing like what he is playing, even the rhythm playing is off.
The improv at the end was RIDICULOUS, Tyler! Soooo delucious!
Love the fact that you mention south of France in 1935!!! Hihihi. I was totally there with you.
I loved the little Django Reinhardt nod at 7:30
Really tasteful playing.

Django is a pretty obvious choice in this kind of music, I'd have loved if Tyler showed up examples of other artists within that scene.
Minor Swing
Don’t be afraid to say Minor Swing
Tips:
- listen to Minor Swing by Django
- think in terms of arpeggios instead of scales and follow the chord chart
- land on the 6th more often than not (works both for minor and major arpeggios)
- try to develop said arpeggios diagonally rather than vertically
- listen to Minor Swing
Possibly one of my favourite improvs I have seen you do. Right notes at the right time! Nicely done!
music theory? never heard of it
Diminished arpeggios also work really well over the V7 chord
not one mention that the chord progression he is playing over is minor swing by Django Reinhardt? everyone should go and listen to that if you want to hear what gypsy lead playing sounds like!
Hey, how about starting a series about exotic scales and their use?! Is that what you have in mind? That would be so sick !
He has a few vids that talk about exotic scales. They're kinda old, but he covers a couple. Search it up here.

There’s an entire exotic scales curriculum in Guitar Super System if you’re interested! musiciswin.com

As soon as I saw gypsy I was like HARMONIC MINOR and I was pleasantly satisfied.
Just spent 2 hours noodling around that chord progression. So much fun, thanks!!
I love gypsy. Swing 42 is one of my favorites.
That guitar is beautiful, especially the fretboard. Absolutely stunning.

Fantastic Lesson Sir.
Hungarian Gypsy is covering a lot of ground. It is like a mode of the byzantine and overlaps with harmonic minor except one note.
