The reason is that in non perfect dark conditions(the moon, stars, flames, etc.) still a little light is present and the surroundings reflect more light than someone who wears black, which leaves a very distinct silhouette. This effect would be even more prominent when wearing this kind of clothing.

It is also true that it isn't anything (that it doesn't exist) because shadow and darkness are the default state of the world until light is present.
It's amazing how the way our brains fill in the gaps where you can't see the outlines within the black makes it harder to realize how dark this actually is!
