  • Hexen II is a fantasy first person shooter made by Raven Software and published by Id Software. It was released in 1997. The game uses a modified Quake 1 Engine.
    Note:I was playing with the source port "Hammer of Thyrion" which will make the game work fine on modern systems and allows you to use Full HD resolutions.
    Can be downloaded here: uhexen2.sourcef...
    Hexen II is the last game of the Serpent Rider trilogy (well except for the addon Portal of Praevus ofcourse but I meant the last of the main games ;D ) and this time you are after Eidolon the oldest and most powerful of the Serpent Riders. But before you can get to him you must defeat his generals: Death, Famine, Pestilence and War. You probably guessed it already, they are basically the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
    It generally is the same game as Hexen 1 and even uses the "hub system" again where the maps of a chapter are connected to one center map and can be entered from there.
    In Hexen II you can still choose from different characters (this time there are 4) but now they implemented a simple XP system where you can level up and get stronger when you kill enough enemies. Every character has different stats and weapons ofcourse.
    The game still has multiplayer and is like Hexen 1 a perfect candidate for the coop mode because everyone can play a unique character.

    This game has a really unique feel to it, none of which you can find in today's games. This is why i prefer the oldschool stuff.

    As a kid, I was immediately drawn by the drawings of paladin and crusader in the gamebox.
    I played this game a lot and from what I can see online, other gamers find this game and it's puzzles pretty hard, but I completed it... the atmosphere just captivated me. I guess you have a ton more patience when you're younger.

    I would ultimately ditch this genre of video games as a kid for Winning Eleven and Pro Evolution Soccer, but I recall playing Hexen II circa 1999. Still have fond memories and it's good to know the recollections are still vivid.

    Another underrated masterpiece. I wish this game wasn't the commercial flop it turned out to be. All things aside, I hope Bethesda buys out Activision and hands over the development rights to ID. I believe they're in a far better position to revive Heretic and Hexen as compared to the now dead and buried Raven

    I remember playing the first hexen on the n64. (was actually my first game on the system). I had always hoped that they would release the sequel, but I doubt the n64 could have handled it. They really need to do a modern version of the series. I'd buy it in a heart beat!

      Believe me, the first few levels are "simple" yet still very complex. To play the whole game and enjoy it you would need a walkthrough and still get stuck somewhere XD
      The Hexen levels were always needlessly complicated, had a lot of backtracking, hard riddles and are just easy to get lost in.
      It's a cool game but I would almost bet that most people have never seen more than the first episode, maybe a bit of the second. ^^

    I remember playing Hexen 2 as a kid and getting hopelessly stuck at one point.
    Some of the puzzles are pretty obscure.
    Sadly I gave up back then and never finished the game but I feel nostalgic seeing it again.
    I should pick it up in the current Steam sale, it deserves another chance.

      I'd kill for that. But you're darn right. It's high time that some AAA production breathes life into the original lovecraftian Quake. I like what the Indies are doing for Aeon of Ruin, but it's about time that we get a fully fledged modern Quake just like how Doom was rebooted.
      I'm quite sure that ID and Bethesda can take that up as a worthy follow up project given the success of Doom.

      No, it's more like Quake with fantasy weapons.
      There are some very basic RPG elements like experience points and your character getting stronger but it's pretty much all automated. This game is more shooter or action game than anyting else.

    Music isn't as good as Quake's, but what can you do. You're fighting Nine Inch Nails with a MIDI soundboard, you can't expect much.

    • @Maxime_Martyr
      @Maxime_Martyr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Quake hasn't really music, rather ambient soundscapes and synthesized drones to create atmospheric tracks.
      In an interview, Trent Reznor said that the Quake soundtrack "is not music, it's textures and ambiences and whirling machine noises and stuff. We tried to make the most sinister, depressive, scary, frightening kind of thing... It's been fun."
      You can't compare ambient sounds and musics so you can't compare Quake's soundtrack and Hexen II's.

    • @Tsinij
      @Tsinij 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a formerly HUGE NIN fan, I think Quake 2's soundtrack by Sonic Mayhem was miles better. And yes I realize it was a different kind of experience.

    • @Maxime_Martyr
      @Maxime_Martyr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I never liked Quake's experimental soundtrack, it felt as if I was a guinea-pig for Trent Reznor's experiments, I enjoyed Quake II's soundtrack much better!
      But Quake's Mission Packs' soundtracks are not bad either. :-)
