    Looking forward to it, Olly. Although my Italian is more advanced, I'll be following you as much as possible - mainly to see how I could have done it better, and also to look into my own language studying methods. All the best with the project!

    I love this project--it really inspires me to return to some of the languages I fell in love with whilst at university (e.g. German and Spanish)and finally learn them well. I'm currently learning modern Greek (a bit of a detour). On that note, any chance you may at some point bring out a Greek reader?Thanks!

    Have a good time with Italian!
    I started learning it last month because I plan to take a holiday trip there in September. So, I'll be waiting for your advice on good resources, especially for audio input.
    At the moment, I don't confuse Italian with French (it is my mother language, so maybe I see better what is foreign from French), but much more with Spanish that is another language I am a beginner in.

    Very apropos for you to start your Italian adventure in Covent Garden. I used to live near there for a year back in 2009-2010. It's lovely. Anyway, Covent Garden is England's first purpose-made Italian piazza then popular on the Continent. The English architects who constructed it in the early 1700s wanted to replicate the beauty and proportion of the Piazza San Marco and the many piazzas of Florence, Rome, Vicenza and Siena. So they came up with Covent Garden. :D

    Olly Richards, do you think there will ever come a point where you'll say: "OK, no more new languages for the next 2-5 years. I just want to work on some of the languages I've already studied." Maybe to become more familiar with kanji or to work on French pronunciation or whatever you feel like working on. It's the age-old question of breadth versus depth. I'd like to hear your take on it.

    • @storylearning
      @storylearning  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is something I’m unsure about. It certainly wasn’t high fluency, but I did study for a couple of months about 16 years ago. After that, spanish and Portuguese came along and I forgot Italian within a few months. So at this stage, I’d say my knowledge is probably similar to someone who learned at school as a kid but hasn’t kept it up.

    It sound fabulous, but how do you start reading and listening to a language that you’ve never studied before. How do you find beginner material that you can “just about understand” have you had some Italian before ?

  • @daverd6434
    @daverd6434 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    i think the experiment would give better results if the target language were harder to learn like german. Because italian is very very similar to portuguese and spanish languages that you already know, so we can anticipate that the results will be good regardless of the methodology you use

    Your approach to listening and reading with Lingq would be interesting - will you listen first with no transcript, then listen reading along? Will you try and write out or shadow what you hear, or is that output so not allowed?

    • @storylearning
      @storylearning  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m basically trying to get as much input as possible, so no writing.
      I usually listen first without reading, but I’ll experiment with material at different difficulty levels.

    Images from libraries and no books to show? Lol. I'm a native Spanish speaker and learning Italian has proven to be tricky. Of course the beginner level is easy to attain, but as you advance it becomes more and more difficult to avoid spanish constructions in italian. Of coyrse it is possible to get a high level of any language as an adult and that it's not necessary for you to move to that country to get that level... But you need good study materials. And some youtube videos are never coming to be enough lol
