As a Skyeman, I must insist that you retract the claim that Lewis and Harris is the 3rd largest island in the Atlantic Archipelago - they're only half an island each. Inter-island rivalry, I'd often thought that the name Lewis was related to the name McLeod - the Gàidhlig for Lewis is Leodhas, which could imply "Of Leod". However, in a dive down a wikipedian rabbit-hole, it appears this may be be a false-friend type situation (albeit there is a strong Leod/McLeod connection to Lewis) Finally, if you ever want voice recordings of the Gaidhlig names for places, people, or things for any future videos, I'd be happy to help. I don't ask for anything in return - I have nothing to promote or sell other than a desire to help strengthen and support the language.
Just a tiny addition on Skye, it has 2 names in Gaelic and had 2 similar names in Norse. One of them is "An t-Eilean Sgitheanach" which translates literally to "The Isle of Skye", but the other one is "Eilean a' Cheò" which means Isle of Mist, likely a translation from the Norse word "Skuy" which was the other Norse word to describe the island and translates to "Misty Isle".
My parents honeymooned on the Isle of Wight before my Dad returned to the States to be demobbed and Mum crossed the pond to join him. Oh, and BTW, both Jersey and Guernsey have breeds of dairy cattle named after them.
The Channel Islands, i.e. Jersey & Guernsey, are the only remnants of the Duchy of Normandy that remain under the British Royal Crown and this is why the Queen is also the Duke of Normandy (not Duchess). The Jersey - Cesear link, or lack thereof, is interesting as New Jersey is found named as Nova Cesearia in some colonial documents.
The Isle of Wight may have been named after Wihtgar an early West Saxon from about the 6th century. The people of Wight were known as the Wihtwara during later Saxon times.
Guernsey and Jersey may be best known in the US for their eponymous breeds of milk cattle, which are ubiquitous in the East along with the German Holsteins
Schleswig Holstein is in Germany ( taken from the Danes ) but the cattle that founded the Holstein breed in the US were Dutch. In the UK the Holstein Society dropped it's honorary president - a Prince of Schleswig Holstein , and changed its name to Friesian in WW1.
I love these videos but one thing that always bothers me about the geography related ones is that the images of the places are often too zoomed in giving little to no context of where the place is.

@@markmh835 how do you know they were named by men? I'm sure there are plenty of women who could look at a pair of mountains and say "ha ha, they look like boobies!" too.
I've been interested in the Shetlands and Orkney Islands for quite a few years now, or ever since I discovered Norn, the extinct language of these islands, and how closely releated they are to my native Icelandic. In fact, there are name placenames that are still in use which come straight from Old Norse, of which Icelandic is a close relative. The Shetlands are still known as Hjaltlandseyjar (Hilt land Islands) in Icelandic, and even their motto is 'Með lögum skal land byggja", which is the same as the Icelandic police uses (By law should the land be built, or something along those lines). And the same goes for Hrossey, that could just as well be an Icelandic placename, as are many others.
Cultural fact, The Rolling Stones used to play some of their early gigs in a pub on Eel Pie Island. Other than that I am surprised you didn't cover the previse island sections of Kent and London that have now become a connected part of the mainland from Isle of Thanet in Kent or the Isle of Dogs in London and so forth...

Really random, but I sometimes catch a bus that goes past a museum about Eel Pie Island (or something like a museum, it's been a while) and I've always wondered what on earth that was about. Thank you for explaining.
The Isle of Lewis comes from Leòdhas in Gaelic, and I’m pretty sure that come from Norse, meaning house of Leod, hence the common name MacLeod on the island.
I was brought up in Shetland, and we were always taught that Shetland was originally called Zetland, meaning end of the land, as romans (I think) got as far as Shetland and couldn't see any further islands. The postcodes there all start ZE which lends credibility to that explanation.
The mainland of Shetland is NOT known as Shetland - Shetland only refers to the whole archipelago. The biggest island is just called "Mainland", though people don't tend to identify with the biggest island and just say they are from Shetland, referring to the whole group.

SantomPh What I suspected anyway. The scenery is quite beautiful in both versions of the movie. Was the ruined cathedral one of those raided by Vikings (like Lindesfarne), or one demolished by Henry VIII?
Allan Richardson I’ve never seen the movie, nor am I a historical expert... but I don’t think Henry 8th ruined Cathedrals, at least not intentionally, instead turning them Protestant after removing any signs of Catholicism? Monasteries and Friaries got different treatment, but I doubt Henry would’ve ruined Cathedrals that could’ve been useful? It could’ve been under him, but with my limited historical knowledge on the Reformation- it was likely done earlier (possibly vikings) or by looters/angry people during or after the Reformation?
@@molly.dog8brooke792 No, Henry VIII did have most of the monasteries closed - it was called the dissolution of the monasteries. As part of this process they had their treasures and the buildings themselves taken as property of the crown, the monks and nuns were evicted, and most relics were destroyed. Henry sold many of the buildings, which were subsequently dismantled for valuable building material, which sometimes involved burning them first. Other monastic buildings were deliberately destroyed on Henry's orders, because doing so asserted his authority over that of the Papacy. As for earlier peoples, yes the Vikings did sack monasteries, but they were generally rebuilt. The monastery on Lindisfarne, for example, was still maintained as a monastery until the dissolution, despite having been famously sacked by viking raiders hundreds of years earlier.

Did you know that Iceland is called Ísland (sometimes written as Island) in Icelandic? I have wondered over this for a while now. Lets start with the name of Iceland... "Ís" in Icelandic means just that... Ice. So why my country is called Iceland in English, is just the "real" or "original" name translated into English. But why is an bit of a land called "island" in English? English has the word "Isle" In Icelandic (and old Nordic) a "small bit of land, surrounded by water or sea" i.e. an island is called "EY" or "Eyja" many of them called "Eyjar" And that is exactly why so many islands about Britain are called "*ey" "*" is here being used to mean the "true" name of the place. "Ey" (or "ey") is used - not "island" Ireland and Britain are islands... and so is Iceland... and Áland...

originally, like England and Ireland there were petty kingdoms that carved up the territory.
@@SantomPh pretty or petty?
Petty, as in "minor"
@@SantomPh Geologically speaking the part of Scotland north and west of the Great Glen ( which contains Loch Ness) was part of north west Canada - the rocks match.
yes, the picts and gaels
Brilliant
It might be a bit contentious to include this in either a video associated with the United Kingdom or one with Ireland, but what about the islet of Rockall? I see the etymology is not as clear as I expected!
1:45 possibly the most famous island
Did you know that Iceland is called Ísland (sometimes written as Island) in Icelandic? I have wondered over this for a while now. Lets start with the name of Iceland... "Ís" in Icelandic means just that... Ice. So why my country is called Iceland in English, is just the "real" or "original" name translated into English. But why is an bit of a land called "island" in English? English has the word "Isle"
In Icelandic (and old Nordic) a "small bit of land, surrounded by water or sea" i.e. an island is called "EY" or "Eyja" many of them called "Eyjar" And that is exactly why so many islands about Britain are called "*ey"
"*" is here being used to mean the "true" name of the place. "Ey" (or "ey") is used - not "island" Ireland and Britain are islands... and so is Iceland... and Áland...

You forgot to mention Danny Wallace's attempted invasion of Eel Pie Island on "How to Build Your Own Country" 😂
2:46
You almost got a portus cale there
Does UK have any Montreal-style islands?
Probably
Captain Yorkie YT I know there’s like a famous promontory somewhere
Sark?
Also not to forget basically all islands that end with "ey"(or a variation) are Germanic in origin even if the first part mayve been stolen from other language groups
Apparently* The isle of wight was the last bit of now English land to have Christianity brought to it. Ironic since the Isle is so far South people would assume it was one of the first places to receive the religion
You forgot to mention the Hebridean Isle of Islay whose name does not come Isle or Island but is actually of unknown non-Indo-European origin.
😭😭😭😭😭 Lundy island wasn’t mentioned it’s my local one
Ynys Môn, not *Mons. And the "Roman" name was just a transliteration of the Celtic name (likely same meaning as Man)
The Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar and the British Overseas Territories are all self-governing territories of the British Crown and are not independent states
I always thought they called it the Isles of Scilly not skilly
Disappointed you resisted the temptation of Muck , Rum and Eigg.

Gosh, I have apparently been mispronouncing "archipelago" and the "Hebrides".
On the thumbnail Hebrides is spelt wrong. One R.

Ynys Gybi is known in English as "Holy island" btw.
6:17 are you mooning us??
Jersey!!!!!
I'm from Orkney and no hate but you said sanday wrong you don't pronounce the 'a' so it's pronounced Sandy. The same with Shapinsay and the ones that have 'say' at the end. The same with a parish on the mainland called Stromness, you just pronounce it strumniss 🙂 hope this helps
I don't know if it's just me but sometimes it's not clear when he says island and Ireland
Are you british? We're from the UK and don't really pronounce our "R"s so they would sound the same :)
Is there a Tesco in Tresco? ... I'll get me coat.
