Death kicks so much ass. The band that opened up for them on the Individual Thought Patterns tour in Europe, Anacrusis, has an album called Screams and Whispers from the same year that’s kind of a hidden gem if anyone’s looking for kind of a proggy metal album to listen to (my dad was in that band I’m shamelessly plugging it lol he’d get a kick out of it if there was a sudden bump on the streams) Also, Idk if you read the comments Vargis, I’m a new subscriber, can’t believe I hadn’t found your channel sooner! I’ve always loved metal discussion stuff since watching That Metal Show and all that stuff on VH1 as a kid and you’ve got a really fun way of talking about it
Checked out that album, it was very cool! You know one could make a lot of connections to control denied here, especially in vocal style and riffs. good Stuff! what did your dad play?
Man, I’ve never heard of Anacrusis until I read your comment this morning, and holy shit Im floored I can’t believe Screams and Whispers went under my radar, I’ve spent pretty much all afternoon listening to the album, absolutely killer music! The songwriting is 10/10, it really reminds of Coroner but even more progressive in some ways. VARVIS is really bringing like minded metal fans together, happy to be part of this community. Keep real metal alive People! \m/
I agree with your SSS songs, but personally I would put Sacred Serenity, Bite the Pain, Story to Tell, Overactive Imagination, Living Monstrosity, See Through Dreams, and Voice of the Soul in SSS as well. And all the rest because Death is metal perfection.
I love how Death rankings is pretty much down to how you like your metal, when im in the mood for some technical and complex stuff i go for the later albums, and theres the OG in your face death metal from the first albums. Death never dropped the ball, almost a perfect band! ❤
Hard to rank em all, very appreciated!! Gonna put my top 10 on the slab 1. A Moment of Clarity 2. Crystal Mountain 3. Empty Words 4. Lack of Comprehension 5. Symbolic 6. Trapped in a Corner 7. Sacred Serenity 8. Spirit Crusher 9. The Philosopher 10. Flesh and the Power it Holds
Damn, must've been such a tough list to put together. I don't think I even have a favorite Death song. Maybe Mentally Blind as of right now. They all hit just right on certain days for me. Death is a GOAT 🇺🇸🤘🏻
Dude, I let Death pass unnoticed during my teens, although a friend told about them. I was not a Death Metal dude. Now, over my 40s I really love Sound of Perseverance and Symbolic. I see the predecessors as the lower steps of the ladder Chuck built. Great guy. Regards from Brazil.
Aside from dramatically moving up "Without Judgement" and switching some A and S/SS songs, we're very much on the same page. Cool one! But can't go wrong in the Death discography really
I tend to appreciate deaths earlier work a little bit more, especially spiritual healing, it being my favorite album from them. One of the biggest things i love about death is something i call "haunting riffs" (basically harmonic minor lul) and i feel like on that album its the strongest. Great video btw
Pretty much agree with your takes, all the SSS songs I love. I was a bit surprised about Trapped in a Corner and Zero Tolerance getting the highest but I think it’s well deserved. Perennial Quest and Empty Words would be up there too. I actually big agree with your take on Voice of the Soul, it’s an awesome song but it’s not like an unbelievable song, just cool how the harmonized guitars with TSOP guitar tone can mesh so well with acoustic and be so emotive. In a similar vein I feel like online I’m the only person who doesn’t think Human is the pinnacle, and I notice none of those songs were super high up for you either. For me my fav is probably See Through Dreams followed by Suicide Machine. Lack of Comprehension and Flattening of Emotions I just never feel as deeply in love with and those two are always cited from that album. However, big disagree with the Spiritual Healing takes, WTF man!!! Lol. For me it’s got a unique balance of edgy lyrics from the first records but with more intelligent subject matter. Living Monstrosity is a SSS Death song for me. Spiritual Healing and Within the Mind are probably the next two standouts. WTM sounds like an updated Zombie Ritual with that intro (also good placement on that one, best song from SBG). Open Casket I also think is underrated, how can you not just go nuts when he’s wailing on the snare drum after the solo? That whole section is gold. Also the title track Leprosy I think is an example of Death Metal or gore lyrics actually being good, it really captures the plight of the lepers and the mood of a DM song fits that subject matter. I listened to SBG many years ago when I’d see articles on important albums and I didn’t really get it. My guitar teacher last year said that his fav is Leprosy and that I should check that out, so I listened to that and relistened to SBG then moved chronologically week by week. Was a great time and I was experiencing all that stuff last year at 28. Anyway I think that gives me a soft spot for Leprosy as that song was like a “this is death metal” moment for me, and I also finally started to think “I really love this!” when I got to Spiritual Healing, so maybe that’s why I’m so high on it. Also might be why Human seemed overrated to me, everyone online was saying it’s the peak but I actually preferred the melodicism of SH. I remember looking at reddit threads to get an idea of fan’s opinions though, and the opinions are all over the place. I guess that shows the breadth Chuck covered and that there’s a case for all the albums really. Anyway all that is to say that I find it really interesting how people’s personal life affects how they experience and perceive music. My tier list would look pretty much the same except I’d be way more bullish on SH songs. Love the channel and what you’ve been putting out man. Looking forward to the rest of the TSOP deep dives, those and the songwriting analysis for Chuck is how I found the channel!
I agree with you that most the Scream Bloody Gore material is pretty boring/forgettable it all kinda blends together for me too. Mutilation kicks ass tho.
Yeah the song Evil Dead has a similar intro to Sortilège's 1983 song Amazone, clearly inspired. But aside from the inspiration of the intro - the song is PHENOMENAL and massively pioneering. The version on the 1984 demo (as Mantas) is pretty much the first Death Metal song ever - in my opinion. Everyone has to hear that 1984 demo to be amazed by how ahead of their time Death were - 3 years before the debut release. And by the way - I think the DragonForce cover of that song is pretty cool and different! Worth checking out too.
Could you cover cynic and athiest? Death is my favorite love chuck as a musician and person. I'm going to have to disagree with the spiritual healing songs. I understand that the album seems boring I understand but for me thay makes the album is James Murphy's solos. Take another listen to the album again for the solos. They are fantastic.
Even tho i don't like Death early stuff, i would have put Lack Of Comprehension in top tier, and Without Judgement is way too low as well in my opinion. But overall great tier list 👍
this is a great ranking! voice of the soul is one of my favourite songs of all time, but this is still a great list. It's never easy to rank EVERY song from a discography, so good job.
Perennial Quest should be lower imo, only dud on that album. The riffs just sound kinda throwaway. Secret Face is an easy SS Tier for me, the intro with the weird timing immediately stuck with me.
Have some disagreements, personally Jealousy is one of my fav song so SSS Tier, everything from TSOP would probably go down a tier or two and everything from SBG and Leprosy up a tier or two. Human is probably the weakest album Imo, followed by Spiritual Healing, they kinda have this awkward "transition phase" vibe
My least favorite of the classic 90’s albums is Symbolic just because the energy is a step down from human and individual. Sound of Perseverance is a great blend of symbolic and the other 2

@@VARVIS_ Awesome! Glad you liked it. And my dad’s the drummer
Just bought last sunday LPs of Manic Impressions and Suffering Hour. Top Band.

there is NO way he put open casket THAT low
Arguabley the best in Leprosy.
Word brother
Without judgement is my favourite song off of symbolic lmao.
Chuck's best solo in my opinion, very emotional, also the section after the solo is absolutely beautiful
I agree with your SSS songs, but personally I would put Sacred Serenity, Bite the Pain, Story to Tell, Overactive Imagination, Living Monstrosity, See Through Dreams, and Voice of the Soul in SSS as well.

Really a testament to how well death’s music has aged
Absolutely
Like great wine

Without Judgment at B is WILD
Another banger, Parvis!

I clicked on this video knowing only one Death song.
You gon learn today
have you heard some more now? XD

Dude, your list is immaculate I agreed with basically everything lol, also Thanks for doing my request man!
Any more great requests my man?
@@VARVIS_ maybe burzum, slayer, I don't know if you've heard of municipal waste. They're not as big.
Sound of perseverance is my favorite Death album. On some days maybe even my favorite of all time.
Fuck yeah! Every video you make is fantastic!
Cheers brother 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Aside from dramatically moving up "Without Judgement" and switching some A and S/SS songs, we're very much on the same page. Cool one! But can't go wrong in the Death discography really
Would move voice of the soul all the way up, but other then that great ranking! Would rank very similar overall!
Man i love all of Spiritual healing, genetic reconstruction in D hurts bro
Sorry brah
Genetic Reconstruction is my favourite Death song so that was painful to see too😅

altering the future is too low
I don't know why, but I was waiting this!
Flattening of Emotions is easily SSS imo

Pretty good list. I’d put most of the human tracks in SS or SSS tho. favourite album from them
the comments about each song were quite good, I agree with most, Id evaluate higher Lack of compreension, Overactive imagination

within the mind, low life and genetic reconstruction💀💀 it's my fav 3 songs from that album
I'd put Scavenger in SSS, my favorite from TSOP
Within the Mind is S tier broooo
Bro put THE voice of the soul on S😭
this is a great ranking! voice of the soul is one of my favourite songs of all time, but this is still a great list. It's never easy to rank EVERY song from a discography, so good job.
Am i just stupid or was the philosopher left out?
no it is there, was under T rather than P
What’s that song playing around the 11:00 mark?
Its a song I made to use as background music lol
where is Land of no return and Beyond the unholy grave? (not the best songs but still a song)
Good list but Open Casket and Leprosy should have been higher. I like Leprosy more than Pull the Plug tbh. Other than that I agree with this list
Sacrifical sounds like devils island tho
YES thats the one. Thanks lad
Perennial Quest should be lower imo, only dud on that album. The riffs just sound kinda throwaway.
