Death has a nearly flawless discography. You could pick any of the seven Death albums and be blown away. Chuck was a genius songwriter and guitarist who will be forever missed.

No one should forget that one of the reasons we have death metal is because of this incredible band. For this reason, Death will always be one of my favorite death metal bands and one of my favorite bands of all time. Sound of Perseverance is easily my favourite album too, it's also the first album I heard from Death after getting a free album download from some kind of early streaming platform way back in 2008. Easily the best Death album and one of the all time greatest releases imo. I'd be interested to know what you'd have given Control Denied though, I also love that album as it felt like a good continuation and while it's where Chuck's career would be tragically cut short it feels like a fitting final release from his metal genius.

Cool video, Robert. Death's discography can only be compared to Maiden's 80s run. All classic records back to back.
Like you, I have a forever soft spot for Symbolic and TSOP. The latter I bought when it came out and for a really long time it was all I played on my goofy discman. Constant exposure made it the Death record that I know best, but also the one I revisit the least 20 years later. These days when I want to listen to Death I'll pop in Human or Symbolic most of the time. Still, sometimes I`m working out and shuffle will get me something off the first records, and I will just fucking headbang my way through those tunes. They are pure heavy metal royalty.

  • @brazzledazzle_

I hate to be this guy but most versions of Human don't have that bonus track......The only reason I mention it is because you cited that as the only reason it wasn't a 5. So would that mean that original version without the bonus track would be a 5? ( apologies in advance for wasting your time with this comment it's just that it seems so weird for something that isn't on most versions of this album draging the score down) That being said amazing video. EDIT: seems as though Relapse records has a huge boner for that Kiss cover. It's on almost every one of their reissues. I don't know why but I spent like 10 minutes on metal archives looking at all the different versions and HOLY FUCK there's like a million. Seems they didn't put the Kiss cover on there until 1998 and then it was on A LOT of the other reissues. Anyway thanks for letting me waste your time going through the specifics of different reissues solely based on the fact that I wanted this album to have a solid 5 LMAO

As pretty much everyone has already stated, Death's whole discography is absolutely killer. I'll go as far as to say it's probably the most consistent discography of any band ever, certainly in terms of legacy bands. I'm of pretty much the same opinion as you, their 80s stuff was awesome but it was the 90s where they really came to life as a band. I'd say my ranking would be
    1) Symbolic (1000/5, that record is beyond perfect to me. A pure, bonafide masterpiece)
    2) Human (4.5/5)
    3) Leprosy (4.5/5)
    4) Individual Thought Patterns (4/5)
    5) Sound of Perseverance (4/5)
    6) Scream Bloody Gore (3.5/5)
    7) Spiritual Healing (3.5/5)
My ranking isn't even based on rating in a critical sense, but purely on how often I return to them. I know for a fact if I were to listen to any of them I'd think it was perfect!

Death has been tied with Iron Maiden as my favorite band for a good number of years. Leprosy the record that introduced me to the band and I haven't looked back since. Said record also has the honor of being my back patch on my battle jacket.
Chuck just seemed to effortlessly write brutal, yet very catchy and beautiful records from Scream Bloody Gore all the way the only Control Denied album (and yes, I'm that guy that counts that as a Death record). It's one of those rare discographies where the musicianship just out does itself from one record to the next and no two are alike.

When I first heard ITP, I was in high school playing bass in my first extreme metal band. DiGorgio's playing changed everything. Up there with the best of Geezer and 'Arry for me.
Also, I think Bathory would make a good topic for one of these videos in the future. They have an extensive though not too long discography that is mostly pretty good, but with enough peaks, valleys and stylistic changes to make for an interesting video.

DiGorgio is legit one of metal's best bassists, anybody arguing otherwise has never heard the guy play. And Bathory would be neat - despite their importance to metal I've never actually spent a lot of time with their music, so it'd be a good excuse to finally dive in.

    1. The Sound Of Perseverance 6/5 (the Sound, emotional content and overall soul in this album is unmatched)
    2. Individual Thought Patterns 5/5 (super dynamic and razor sharp riffs/melodies and one of the greatest guitar solos in ‘trapped on the corner’)
    3. Symbolic 4.5/5 (super dynamic, catchy and powerful album, some songs can be predictable which takes some points out)
    4. Human 4/5 (amazing mood, grooves and melodies, production is a little flat and songs do blend too much with each other as they all have a very similar sound)
    5. Spiritual Healing low 4/5 ( really fun and accessible album, hooky and very catchy. Production is the worst on any death album. Everything feels ready distant and blurred.)
    6. Scream Bloody Gore 3.5/5 (really atmospheric and still really fun to listen to. Production is a bit rough but it actually compliments the sound and feel of this album)
    7. Leprocy 3/5 (straight forward in your face death metal goodness. It can feel a bit simple at times and too many bands have mimic the sound so much that it no longer stands out comparatively )

That was fun! Leprosy was the first record where I left the comfort zone of what I heard up to that point: Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Metallica et al. I’m still not sure why I bought Leprosy at the time. Let’s settle on curiosity. The title track, Forgotten Past and Pull The Plug are awesome. Leprosy remains one of my favourite more extreme metal albums and I would give it happily a 4.5 out of five. It’s only topped by the last two entries in the Death discography. They are both fivers. They are masterpieces. They are unrivalled. Period.
Sadly I’ve only seen Death live once and that was during the ill-fated European tour in 1990 as support of Kreator. Chuck thought that the tour wasn’t adequately organised and decided against it. To fulfil contractual obligations one half of the band recruited two roadies and did the tour without Chuck. To my dismay they animated the audience to yell “fuck Chuck” between each song. I’m still appalled by this today.

Nice work, nothing to argue (even though Symbolic is my favourite). I'm not gonna try ranking these however, cause that would put either Human or Sound of Perseverance on 2nd or 3rd and thats seems kinda like a weird thing to do.
What do we wanna next: Well you mentioned some bands, whos worst album is amazing, so how about those ;)

Nice review, however the Kiss cover on Human should not affect the overall rating of the album, because this cover isn't even included on the original version of Human and is only added as a bonus track on the reissue. After all it wasn't a Chuck intention to put it on Human as a "legitimate" track of the album, and we should respect that.
For me it's a gradual progress regarding this band, so I would rank all the albums as they follow in their discography (with SBG at the bottom and SoP at the top of the list), though I would probably put ITP and Symbolic in the same spot - it's impossible for me to choose which one of the two is better.

I wouldn't consider the "God of Thunder" cover a part of "Human", as it wasn't included until the Relapse Records reissues. But hey, I agree, not my favorite either.

This was fun to listen to thanks for taking the time.
"literally beat that literal dead horse"? insensitive and wrong!
Sometimes you say "fucking" and it sounds normal but other times it sounds very forced.
The god of thunder cover is really fun and good and I disagree with you and I don't like your reasoning "fuck this, I don't give a fuck" is also not true because you do give a fuck you made a nice video about it. I'm saying this all in a positive way, you seem cool! Cheers!

I had Symbolic playing nonstop in the car for many years. Then ITP and Sound of perseverance. Then Human, and the rest.
I am convinced that Sound of Perseverance is not a Death Album, it always feels off, the more you listen to it. The painkiller cover is killer, but those solos are … simply lacking the punch, aggressive, melodic squeal, … Death, a death metal band, somehow made those solos sound wimpy, at least not at all with the motif and sound of the original song.
For example, Flesh and the power it holds, killer riff… why cut it off with some power chords and … while they take a break from playing the song, in the middle of their song, I go take a smoke break - and I don’t even smoke.
Voice of the soul, never understood why this track gets people so much.
That being said, the musicianship is killer, drums, bass, everything. I just find the structure of the songs extremely boring, like Chuck was ready to move on and the label told him he had to release it under the Death brand.
I would have been more interested in a Mayhem review. Bring on the Mayhem review.
