Unofficial "Ty & That Guy" That Drinking Game:
    1. Take a shot everytime Wes or Ty reference some 80's tv show
    2. Take a shot with Wes's "COOOLD BLOODED!" moment
    3. Take a shot everytime they forget the name of a member of the cast
    4. Take a shot when they HATE (with love) some set, or CG effect
    5. Take a SIP every time Ty says "Here's the thing..." (thx to Gastón Nasta for this one)
    6. Take a shot everytime they disagree on some title in the patented Wes Chatham's "Best of" movie pool
    7. Final shot: "Say bye, Ty" -"Bye Ty"
    Cheers, beratnas ;)

OMG Holden's face when Amos asks "Have you ever talked to a pedophile". Literally the perfect response.
And that conversation between Miller and Fred Johnson.
"I take it you know where you want to go."
    "Eros."
    "What!?"
Also the perfect response. Almost better than his response to Dresden getting shot in the face.

@@kleingrrmpf I did as well, and I thought they had a few pieces of equipment in there to do an individually tailored sort of cooldown to maximize physiological benefits of the exercise done elsewhere. Going to stick with that take. This is a classic creative situation where the person who knows what it's supposed to be can only see that it isn't that vs. seeing how it leads to an even better inference they couldn't possibly afford to show.

Ty, Wrath of Khan was amazing but you are selling short how good First Contact was by telling Wes not to see anymore Star Trek. Captain Picard dealing with PTSD after being assimilation by the Borg was amazing to say the very least. The whole Moby-Dick analogy is beautifully done. Also Zefram Cochrane who had been viewed as this great Visionary is slightly selfish alcoholic.

    • @VoodooMcVee
      @VoodooMcVee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, the strange effects of reality, right? Alex ran that sim to eliminate his human factor, but of course could not calculate in the human factor of the opponent. Perhaps someone important on that ship got incapacitated or panicked and flinched or just had a headache and was too slow. Sometimes you're just lucky.
-On another note, I always wondered what happened to that ship. It got damaged pretty badly, but as far we I know it didn't explode, so why didn't the Belters salvage it? I mean, they are known to fly much worse rust-buckets, so why not plug the holes in this high tech stealth ship and use it?-

Anywho, from my first listen I couldn't believe how spot on the film conversations are because the films being discussed from Aliens to Die Hard to Heat, etc. are all films I am obsessed with and I have to leave a comment this time, because I am blown away at how you managed to bring up two of my all time favorites in the ghost film subgenre! Ty Franck, my man, kudos to you for both The Changeling and Ghost Story, two classic films that scared the s*** out me when I was a kid! Keep up the great work on the show guys!!!

  • @mels2990
    @mels2990 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Okay, personal favorite ghost movies for my husband and I we feel should have been listed. The main one that we were yelling at you to mention and were soooo disappointed you didn't was 13 Ghosts, both the original and the remake! I prefer the remake because they could do the effects right but the original was great for 1960.
Also Devil's Backbone, The Grudge, Ghost Ship and, there could be a little taxonomy argument here, Candyman. Maybe not top 5 but, come on, Tony Todd.
We kind of agree with Ty's argument about Ghostbusters not completely fitting the bill but not due to it being a comedy (sorry, Wes) and that The Others was meh.

@50:06 Ty is talking about Alex being impacted by not being able to protect the people on both invasion pods. In the episode, when Naomi is asking whether Miller was on the pod that got destroyed, Alex is looking at the manifest of the lost pod, and while glad Miller isn't on it, he sees the face of a belter he had just recently helped and spoken with. That's the gut-punch that wrecks him for awhile.

32:13 honestly I liked the set. It's a home to someone who works on the docks. Probably not paid great. So it looks simple, Spartan (that's the right word, not elegant). And I like that there were just posters on the wall. He is a kid. Young. Presumably an orphan, at the least independent. Was first stealing water on Ceres. Then with his uncle who we learned didn't have enough to make it the long way. He doesn't have a lot of money. Some fancy 3D or VR thing, like what Wes is talking about, seems like it would cost more. I know books/paper cost a lot in universe but some paper alternative surely exists or poster-like object exists for this purpose exactly: to decorate the walls of low paid dockworkers.

On the discussion about Diogo's room and hi-tech set decorations, Wes' comments reminded me of two movies. Bladerunner 2049, where the main character has a holographic "girlfriend", and there are holographic personalized advertisements popping out of billboards; and Minority Report, where your identity is captured many times a day with cameras, allowing similar personalized ads, as well as intrusive police involvement. In the setting of a movie like that, those embellishments work well. But in a setting like Tyco Station, where Diogo has been for a very short time, it would be out of balance.

Ghost stories you missed. The Entity, very disturbing, Barbara Hershey. The Wraith, low budget but amazing scifi ghost remake of the Clint Eastwood classic, but with Extra Terrestrial mystery. What is left to the imagination to fill in is what makes it a great film, not scary at all but thought provoking. Prince of Darkness…that mirror image thing leaves an impression. Pet Semetary, arguably SK’s scariest or more disturbing film adaptation. Mama, surprisingly creepy for a modern era scary movie. Something about the opening montage was enough, the thought of children being raised in the woods by a ghost is so unnerving it has to be taken seriously.

Gentlemen. You delivered again. And yes, peaking with Midnights review of TWOK.
And STV needs some love. Yes it’s a godawful Shatner ego trip. That’s why I love it now (hated it in 1990).
Ps. I got creeped out at the Lake Mungo trailer. Thanks guys

Since they mentioned Alice Krige, Wes should check out First Contact. I mean , it has some horror elements with the Borg, and is generally the best Star Trek movie next to Wrath of Khan.

I'd like to second The Haunting (which Ty mentioned toward the end) but the 1963 version and also What Lies Beneath starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeifer which was a little creepy. Also Crimson Peak directed by the amazing Guillermo del Toro.

    Food for Thought:
Movie Genres: Is Star Wars a ci-fi or a western (or other)?
Diogo's Posters: Think a futuristic version of rollable OLED TVs.
The Shining: There wasn't enough time to build Jack Nicholson's character in the film, which is why he was a great choice for the character. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest did come out only 5 years before The Shining.
Draper's Unit: That was a gym? I didn't notice. It didn't look like a gym (to me). Perhaps they are doing more with less in the limited space onboard a ship?

Has anyone seen "Ghost from the Machine", aka "Phasma Ex Machina"? It's kinda of like "Primer" meets "The Others". I thought it was a pretty good ghost movie.
Apparently it has a non-indie remake called "Our House" that I need to go check out. Edit - never mind on "Our House" I've seen it and it wasn't great.

    • @eeach

Also, speaking of time-lords, "Primer" is my favorite time travel movie. Hard indie sci-fi written and directed by a former engineer.

It's a general purpose nano technology. What was sent to Sol was programmed to build a ring-gate from whatever material it could find and call home. But what we see on Ilus was the same technology programmed for a different purpose. And later, we see it used in human-made ships after Cortazar spends a couple decades trying to reverse engineer the tech.

I listen on the iOS podcast app but had to come here to 100% agree with Wes re: Diogo's dorm room. I've watched the series through twice and each time I come to that scene - or any scene set in Diogo's flat - I'm instantly distracted by the posters. Ty argues that sexy holograms would've been a distraction. My argument is the opposite. Paper cutouts from three hundred year old issues of Maxim are a far bigger distraction. They make me wonder if Diogo has unplumbed depths. Is he antiquarian who specializes in collecting ancient cheesecake posters?

  • @artboymoy
